The annual interschools between Grey College and Paul Roos Gimnasium started in 1991.
Paul Roos started this interschools in the best way possible with a 20-3 victory in Stellenbosch. This game also saw Paul Roos’ First XV finish the season unbeaten for the first time.
In that team of the Maroon Machine were future Springboks like Justin Swart and Cobus Visagie.
This year’s clash between the two first teams will be the 40th. Grey College has won 29 of the encounters, with Paul Roos coming out on top ten times.

Worthy winners: South Africa’s Girls’ u17A team did not drop their standards across four days of action against Zimbabwe u18A. Photo: Supplied.
Raffael Abrahams and Chelsey McGregor scored a brace each as South Africa u17A completed a clean sweep of their Allistar Fredericks Africa Challenge four-match series with a 5-0 win over Zimbabwe u18A at St David’s Marist Inanda, in Sandton, on Friday.
After their second match, coach Omari Pienaar-Geyer stated that the team’s main focus was on improving. There was no better testament to that than the fact that her charges were more clinical and had the Zimbabweans chasing shadows after four days of action.
“We focused on our structure during outlets and played around with different shapes. We also worked on our press, and turning over the ball in specific areas, which made a big difference.”
The visible strides the girls made imbued Pienaar-Geyer with confidence that the team would be able to hold their own and challenge strongly at the Dato Mirnawan Cup, in Malaysia, later in the year. She coached the outfit that contested the annual event last year and has a full understanding of the tournament’s demands.
Pienaar-Geyer also said that while the spotlight and credit for the team’s success falls on her, it had been a team effort. She leaned on the wisdom and experience of her coaching staff: assistant coach, Illse Davids; Damian Kimfley, who served as the team’s video analyst; the goalkeepers’ coach, Shaun Laubscher; and Nonnie Mtolo, the team manager.
“We worked super well together. I also want to thank the SASHOC executive team, specifically Sharmin Naidoo and Wayne Marsden, for creating this opportunity for the kids and staff,” Pienaar-Geyer said.
On Friday, the match seemed like a continuation of the teams’ Thursday encounter, which finished 3-0 in favour of the hosts. For much of the contest, South Africa flooded the Zimbabwe final third in search of a goal, while the visitors had a sea of white shirts defending against South Africa’s incursions.
The initial breakthrough came five minutes before the end of the first chukka when Raffael Abrahams scored from a penalty corner when the ball somehow evaded everyone else and she tapped in at the far post.
South Africa could have gone 2-0 up in the last minute of the quarter, when Chelsey McGregor forced a turnover on the edge of the Zimbabwe circle. But the visitors scrambled well to keep the home team out. However, the reprieve was only momentary. Azania Petersen kept the attack alive and fed McGregor, who would not be denied on the second time of asking a few seconds later.
Petersen, then, turned from provider to scorer shortly after the resumption of play in the second chukka. After Emihle Wulana found Petersen unmarked in the circle, the St Andrew’s schoolgirl made no mistake from close range.
In the final chukka, Petersen was again in the thick of things. She closed down a Zimbabwean player immediately after the restart, won the ball, and threaded a pass to Abrahams, who showed nifty skills, putting her indoor hockey experience on display, as she beat the Zimbabwe goalkeeper to score her second goal of the day.
That strike brought Abrahams’ tally for the tournament to three, making her the joint-highest scorer, alongside Jemma Ferreira, who scored her three goals in the first two matches.
Timari Jonker, Sarah-Ellen Groenewald,Zezethu Kunene, and McGregor combined beautifully for South Africa’s fifth goal. It began when Jonker forced a turnover in South Africa’s half. She, then, slid a pass to Groenewald, who dribbled past a handful of Zimbabwe defenders before playing the ball into the opposition’s circle.
Kunene screened the advancing Zimbabwean ‘keeper well and helped the ball on to McGregor, who scored her second and South Africa’s fifth.
While South Africa’s forwards will get the plaudits for consistently finding the back of the net, their defence deserves mention for the manner in which they held the visitors at bay. They denied Zimbabwe circle entries and in the odd moments that the visitors sneaked through, they were stonewalled by South Africa’s goalkeeping pair of Annika Kloppers and Peyton Marais, who took turns in goal.
“We aimed to play with intent and have fun, and we ticked all the boxes,” Pienaar-Geyer said.

South Africa’s u16A boys’ hockey team produced a commanding display to end the Allistar Fredericks African Challenge with a 5-1 win over Zimbabwe’s u18A side on Friday, at St David’s Marist Inanda, in Sandton.
The hosts wasted no time in taking control of the clash, dominating from the first whistle.
Blaine Candy got the scoreboard moving, netting two brilliant goals in quick succession to give South Africa the early lead and ignite the home crowd.
South Africa’s blistering start continued when Dante Elkington struck, followed by Kade Lottering, which made it 4-0 before the end of the first chukka.
The visitors regrouped in the second chukka. They were more composed and tightened their defensive shape, and they were rewarded when Dean Muzengeza pulled a goal back to make it 4-1.
The third chukka was end-to-end, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to finish, thanks to disciplined defending and sharp goalkeeping.
Luc Boyall rounded off the scoring in the fourth chukka, slotting South Africa’s fifth to put the cherry on the top of an impressive performance by the home team.
South Africa‘s u16B side also impressed, cruising to a 6-0 win over Zimbabwe’s U16A team.
Buhle Mfunelwa opened the scoring and penalty corner conversions from Caleb Cilliers and Kaden Henderson stretched the lead to 3-0 in the second chukka. Kamohelo Tsoka added a fourth with a fine field goal.
Zimbabwe was feeling the pressure, and their task was made more difficult when Raymond Sipani was shown a green card, which left them a man down for two minutes.
South Africa capitalised immediately, with captain Jason Joiner converting a penalty corner to put his side 5-0 ahead. Buhle Kama completed a resounding 6-0 win with the final goal of the game and the series.
South Africa’s Ben Wilson was named the man of the match. He expressed his gratitude to his team, saying: “I am just grateful to be with this team. There is so much talent in this team and support from the coaches, so I am grateful.”
SA captain Jason Joiner said the South African national team had performed well throughout the series. “This team is amazing,” he reckoned. “We have learned a lot from each other because everyone has got the skill.
“(Coach) Siya (Sityana) has been amazing. He has taught us a lot of stuff during this week, and I think we all grew as players.”

St Andrew’s School: 15 Nkhahle Sematlane, 14 Miles Murray, 13 Oliver Ziegler, 12 Naudé Botha, 11 Kaelo Monyaki, 10 Leon Athanasiou, 9 Ruben van Aarde, 8 Raseatla Lepheane, 7 Thato Kalake, 6 Matthew Fletcher (captain), 5 Olin Hirwa, 4 Chris Jordaan, 3 Hloni Mkwane, 2 Lucien Hugo, 1 Kamogelo Leshupi.
Malherbe van Niekerk was the only player to upset the established order on day one of the Growthpoint SA Junior Nationals Squash Championships. Photo: Grant Pitcher/Gallo Images.
Boland’s Malherbe van Niekerk caused the only upset of the day as the Growthpoint SA Junior NationalsSquash Championships got off to a flying start at the V&A Waterfront, in Cape Town, on Thursday.
The u17 and u19 age groups are in action on the all-glass court at Makers Landing from Thursday to Saturday, with the Senior Nationals and the u15 division taking place from 28-30 August.
Van Niekerk was seeded sixth in the boys’ u17 section and fully deserved his win over third-seed Aiden McNeill, of KwaZulu-Natal, who never gave up trying throughout a tough five games.
After splitting the first four games, it all boiled down to the decider, in which Van Niekerk seized the early advantage with some good strokeplay, which included pulling off a winning boast and a tight drop to set up a 9-6 lead.
Soon after that, he moved to match point and killed off the contest with an accurate drive to the back of the court to qualify for the top four.
The winners of Thursday’s matches will contest pool A in a round-robin format on Friday and Saturday, while the losers move into pool B.
Chantè Leppan, the second seed in the u19 girls’ competition, scored a comfortable 3-0 win over Benedette van Tonder. Photo: Grant Pitcher/Gallo Images.
There was also a good contest in the girls’ u17 section when Border’s Kate van Biljon found herself in a proper arm wrestle against Vivienne van der Schyff, of Free State.
Fourth-seed Van Biljon won the first game 11-8 against the fifth seed, but Van der Schyff got back into the match by taking the second game by a similar margin.
There was not much to choose between the two, and they were always within a few points of each other, although Van Biljon took a significant lead by winning the third game, also 11-8.
As they battled for supremacy, the Border player reached her first match point but put a lob out of court to go into a tiebreaker at 10-10.
Crucially, another Van der Schyff error gave Van Biljon her second match point and this time she made no mistake to wrap up a thrilling contest.
Besides those two results, the day was sprinkled with interesting matches as the players fought to qualify for the top four.
The top seeds did not always have things their own way, but in the end, they were able to find their rhythm to vindicate their rankings.
For instance, Northerns’ Judah Phillips, the u19 top seed, was pushed all the way by Boland’s Anrieg Small in the first game before winning it 11-9. He then got into his stride and dropped only six more points.
Christian Swanepoel, the boys’ u17 number one seed, from Eden, also had to work hard in his first game before subduing Milan Raffa, of Northerns, 11-9. He established his supremacy by taking the second 11-7 and coasted through the third for the loss of only four points.
Fichardtpark: 15 Allerick Jonker, 14 Matthew Valentine, 13 Divan Martens, 12 Junior Titoti, 11 Ze Mathese, 10 Unathi Ntuli, 9 JM Rensburg, 8 Jonathan Duarte, 7 Buko Mlali, 6 Josh Nelson, 5 Dian Visagie, 4 Dillon Louw, 3 Marko van der Westhuizen, 2 Marno Smit, 1 Jordan Jordaan.

Ander eindstryde – Sentraal A-veld:

Brandwag will be aiming to confirm their status as Kariega’s best in 2025 when they take on Daniel Pienaar on Saturday. Photo: Die Hoërskool Brandwag on Facebook.
Brandwag will be aiming to put the finishing touches on their Tinara Cup challenge and to establish themselves as the top guns in Kariega when they host Daniel Pienaar in their final game on Saturday.
The competition involving the top three sides in Kariega was established last year and involves home and away matches between Brandwag, Daniel Pienaar, and Muir College.
There have been some intense battles for the top honours this year, but Brandwag held sway in the opening rounds with hard-fought wins over the Tigers(22-19) and Muir (26-10).
They, then, went on to wrap up the competition two weeks ago with a resounding 62-3 result over a hapless Muir team, who failed to show their earlier competitiveness.
But even with the competition decided, the Daniel Pienaar Tigers are sure to come out firing as they attempt to take something positive from the season.
That means Brandwag will have to be fully focused on the task ahead of them for a showdown which, generally, captures the imagination of the whole town. These matches have a long history of intense rivalry.
There are a number of other mouth-watering showdowns in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro on Saturday, none more so than the annual derby between Framesby and Marlow Agricultural, in Gqeberha.
The home side will go into the game lacking match practice, having not had any matches for the two weeks since their loss to Grey High.
Nonetheless, coach Louis Gerber is astute enough to have his men in the right frame of mind for what is always a tough challenge against their Nxuba rivals.
Marlow will be hurting from two narrow losses in recent games, to Queen’s College by three points and to Pearson by two points. That will have them primed to prove a point against Framesby.
Graeme College, fresh off a notable win over Queen’s, travels to Kariega for their annual clash with Muir. The Makhanda visitors will be favoured, but there will be no room for complacency against a determined home team.
Two other Eastern Cape schools are on the road this weekend, with Pearson in Somerset West for their derby against Parel Vallei, and Nico Malan taking on Punt, in Mossel Bay.
Marlow Agricultural: 15 Du Preez Vermaak, 14 Pierre Marais, 13 WJ Pienaar, 12 Ockert du Preez, 11 Jurgens van Staden, 10 Cole Hurter, 9 Logan van Vuuren, 8 GD Jordaan (vice-captain), 7 Adrian Joubert, 6 CJ Botha, 5 Marnus Malan, 4 Burgert van Heerden, 3 Herman le Roux, 2 Markus Bester, 1 Zian Jacobs.
Nico Malan: 15 Regan Stone, 14 Kobus Strydom, 13 Gelden van Niekerk, 12 Enzo Machaba, 11 Tequane Koopman, 10 Leighton Lawrence, 9 Lleyton Mienie, 8 Neil Lategan, 7 Chrisjan de Lange, 6 Ruben van Dijk, 5 Merwe van der Merwe, 4 Ulrich van Zyl, 3 Andre van der Merwe, 2 MC Ferreira, 1 Waldo Krige.
