    Foto: Frans Lombard/Actionpix.

  • Midstream College se eerste Bowl toets kom teen 2025 naaswenner

    PHOTO: Hannes Nienaber

Potchefstroom Gimnasium t.

Potchefstroom Gimnasium: 15 Josh Pretorius, 14 MJ Potgieter, 13 Durand du Plooy, 12 Daniel Marais, 11 Rea Moalosi, 10 Zandré da Silva, 9 Brendon Kellerman, 8 De Wet Grobbelaar, 7 Damien Zwahlen, 6 Zach de Jager, 5 Joubert Niemann, 4 Ignu du Toit, 3 Nic Dreyer, 2 Hardu Wolmerans, 1 Rynel Rautenbach.

    FOTO: Hannes Nienaber

The fifth edition of the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament kicked off in Kimberley on Friday afternoon, with only eight matches played. A chock-a-block schedule follows on Saturday.

The tournament hosts, Kimberley Boys’ High, faced a tough opener against Northern Academy, but pushed the Limpopo school hard before succumbing to a 0-1 defeat.

Northern Academy finished only 12th last year, one place behind Kimberley Boys’ High. However, they’ve won some major titles in the past two years, including the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Championship in 2024 and the inaugural Curro Halala Cup last year. No doubt, they’re laser-focused on adding the Absa Wildeklawer title to those prestigious titles.

Norkem Park, the runner-up to Northern Academy at the Curro Halala Cup, suffered an unexpected loss to Gqeberha’s Victoria Park High, who scraped a tight 1-0. Vic Park is one of the Eastern Cape’s leading lights, along with Urban Academy, which won the Victoria Park Soccer Challenge earlier this year.

Queen’s College, from Komani, in the Eastern Cape, took on the defending champions, Virginia High, in their opener, but found themselves overrun, suffering a 0-5 defeat. Fikile Yena, Oageng Lebesane, Thato Kraal, and Opmphemetse Mokiri all scored from the field for Virginia High, while Kabelo Mokhuane slotted a penalty for the Free Staters.

The 2024 champions, Clapham High, who are the only team outside of the Free State to have secured the title, kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against last year’s runner-up, the Wildeklawer Academy, who took Virginia High to penalties in the title game in 2025.

Grey College made a confident start, beating Vaal High 3-0. It was no simple starter; Vaal High was the runner-up in the Grey Nedbank Soccer Tournament last year, which earned them an invitation to the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament.

The most surprising result on the opening day was Maritzburg College being trounced 6-1 by Reddam House Bedfordview. While the Red, Black, and White are currently in a rebuilding phase, they have been one of KwaZulu-Natal’s and South Africa’s best sides over the past three seasons. However, they’ve said goodbye to some leading players, and it might take them some time to adjust.

HTS Louis Botha, the Absa Wildeklawer winners in 2022 and 2023, held off Jeppe High School for Boys in their first outing, nabbing a 1-0 victory.

Also in Group C, Navalsig High, fifth in 2025, handed Northwood a 3-1 loss.

Northwood’s stars shone brightly as they helped their team to capture commanding back-to-back wins over Michaelhouse and St Charles College at the Michaelhouse Hockey Tournament on Friday. Those victories propelled them to the top of Pool A.

Kearsney College picked up from where they left off on day one and consolidated their position at the summit of Pool B with wins over Hilton College and Reddam House Constantia.

Luc Boyall gave Northwood a sensational start to the day. The Northwood forward fired in the first hat-trick of the tournament, and Hamza Amla added the other, as the Knights secured an impressive 4-1 win over Michaelhouse.

The Durban school doubled its output in the evening on the Aitkens Astro, outplaying St Charles 8-1, with Caleb Phipson and Ryan Herselman each netting a brace. Boyall took his tournament tally to four with another goal, while Blake Herselman, Mnqobi Mhlongo, and Siseko Sebako also got in on the act.

Friday’s successive victories left Northwood with seven points from three games. They are followed in Pool A by Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), who have four points from two games. The Witstokke played a single match on Friday, securing a 1-0 win over St Charles, courtesy of a Kean Cornelissen goal.

St Andrew’s College occupies third place after a 2-2 draw with Michaelhouse. The men from Makhanda, who drew 3-3 with Northwood on the first day, have two points from two matches. A draw and a loss on Friday left Michaelhouse, with two points from two games, in fourth place, trailing St Andrew’s because of an inferior goal difference.

Kearsney, who began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Paarl Boys’ High on day one, continued to set the pace in Pool B with a 4-3 win over Hilton and a comfortable 3-1 victory against Reddam House Constantia. The men from Botha’s Hill have established a three-match winning streak and will be keen to carry that form into the third day.

Hilton bounced back from their loss to Kearsney with a narrow 2-1 win over Boishaai. The victory lifted them to six points from three outings and into second place. Maritzburg College downed Reddam House Constantia 3-0, leaving them third in the group with three points from two matches.

Paarl Boys’ High and Reddam House Constantia are in fourth and fifth place in the group, with both still chasing a first win.

Day three kicks off with 08:30 matches between Affies and St Andrew’s College on the Aitkens Astro, while Maritzburg College goes head-to-head with Paarl Boys’ High on the Punchbowl Astro.

  • Hibbert Shield blown wide open on thrilling first day

Hibbert Shield blown wide open on thrilling first day

When the 16 teams competing in the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield arrived in Gqeberha, one thing was clear: no team was safe, and for the first time in years, the tournament was wide open.

The opening day’s play, on Friday, proved that statement true, and if the results were a measure of what’s to come over the weekend, then shockwaves will be sent through the schoolboy hockey landscape.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

Upsets and cracking goals filled the day, with top-notch hockey lighting up Grey High’s Rectory AstroTurf and the Collegiate Girls’ High Astro.

Here’s a look at the action:

    Pool A

Parel Vallei High School, from Somerset West, fell into the dark horse category in the lead-up to the tournament. However, they quickly changed that narrative to thrust themselves into the conversation about title contenders.

Coach Michael van Rensburg‘s side recorded back-to-back wins, outplaying the hosts, Grey High, 5-2 in a cracking affair before recording a 3-0 win over St Alban’s College.

Against Grey, the boys from the Western Cape were a class apart, even though they had to come from behind after conceding an early goal to James Chree.

Luka Meets began the fightback, exhibiting some outstanding 3D skills and dribbling past a couple of defenders to pull one back for his side.

That solo effort energised PV, and Meets, who is one of the most dangerous forwards in the school game, soon had a second. Late in the second chukka, he completed his hat-trick from a short corner.

Grey skipper Dante Elkington made it 2-3, but the home side’s joy was cut short when Tristan Rautenbach tapped in on the far post.

Meets wasn’t done yet, and scored his fourth in the third chukka. PV’s shot-stopper, Julian Thiering, also pulled off multiple saves to keep the score unchanged as the visitors stunned their hosts in an unexpected turn of events.

In their second match of the day, Parel Vallei defeated St Alban’s, thanks to goals from Benjamin Traut, Nicolas Havinga and Meets.

While PV made a statement, Durban High School (DHS) produced mixed results.

Coach Keegan Hezlett‘s boys edged St Alban’s 2-1 in the tournament opener, courtesy of strikes from Jessie van Wyk and Bonga Maphanga.

They met Grey in their second outing of the day and were beaten 5-1 as the hosts bounced back emphatically and ended the Horseflies‘ unbeaten season.

Day two’s action will decide which team finishes top of the pool when Parel Vallei faces DHS, while Grey takes on St Alban’s in a must-win encounter. Saturday’s showdown will also be an opportunity for PV to avenge a 3-6 loss to DHS at the Coastal Cup.

    Pool B

Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) headed to the Hibbert Shield off the back of a 1-2 loss against Grey High in Gqeberha last week.

Coach Michael Baker’s charges dominated that clash but failed to take their chances and turn possession and territory into goals.

They were far more clinical on Friday, powering their way to two convincing victories: 7-1 over Clifton College and 5-1 over St Stithians College.

At half-time, against Clifton, PRG held a narrow lead. In the second stanza, they pulled away. Luke van der Merwe bagged a brace while Ruben Gouws, Caleb Cilliers, Seth Paterson, Christiaan Fouché and Daniel de Waal also chipped in to seal a big win. Tye Milne scored the solitary goal for Clifton.

St Stithians, despite going down to PRG, did mark a tick in the W column after outplaying Selborne College 3-0, with Didier le Roux, Sebastien Poussin and Christian Bernhardi getting their names onto the scoresheet.

Clifton also bounced back, grabbing a close 3-2 win over Selborne.

With their two wins, PRG is already assured of a place in the quarterfinals. Clifton and Saints will battle it out for the second spot in the last eight. They previously met at the St Stithians Easter Festival, where Clifton claimed a tight 1-0 win.

    Pool C

The defending champion, South African College High School (SACS), was held to a 2-2 draw by Westville Boys’ High in their opening match.

That result opened Pool C wide, ensuring there’s everything to play for on the second day.

SACS was considered the favourite heading into the clash, but the boys from KwaZulu-Natal had other ideas and were intent on making a statement.

The Capetonians opened the scoring through Luke Laver. However, his strike was cancelled out by a beautifully lofted shot from Bo Mokoena, who showed great awareness to pick up the scraps from a short corner and lift the ball past Ethan October

Litha Kraai snatched back the lead for his side in the third chukka, and SACS looked set to see the game out with a one-goal win.

Westville, however, has been playing some entertaining, winning hockey under coach Harold Siyaya, and they refused to give in. With a minute remaining in the final chukka, Connor Lilford, who was added to the team at the eleventh hour, found himself in space inside the circle and pounced on a rebound to level matters.

SACS came back firing in their second match, thumping Grey College 7-0. Earlier in the day, the Bloemfontein boys put up a good fight but fell 1-2 to Garsfontein.

    Pool D

At a glance, before the start of the Hibbert Shield, it appeared that Pool D would be an entertaining group. It’s safe to say it lived up to those expectations on Friday.

The group, featuring Paarl Gimnasium, Pearson High, Bishops, and the debutants, Jeppe High School for Boys, dished up drama and suspense.

The day, however, belonged to Jeppe and Paarl Gim, who both finished it with four points, which included a 1-1 draw between the pair at Collegiate Girls’ High in the morning.

Jeppe, eager to claim a first-ever win at the tournament, faced Bishops in the afternoon. They were on song and finished well while maintaining a solid defence, coming away with a comfortable 4-0 victory.

The Kensington school dominated possession and territory, but what stood out the most was how they converted their opportunities into goals when it mattered most.

Kade Lottering led the charge with a hat-trick of goals, all of which came from penalty corners, while Matthew Mackenzie was on the end of a beautifully worked team goal.

Paarl Gim, meanwhile, outplayed Pearson High School 4-0 in their second match of the day.

Despite going down to Jeppe, Bishops ended the day with three points. They picked up a win in their first outing, with goals from Litha Mbiko, Robert Vincent, and Max Morgan carrying them to a 3-0 win over Pearson.

Pearson is out of quarterfinal contention, but there’s next to nothing separating the top three in the group as they head into crucial fixtures on Saturday.

A Masterful performance in the second half by Paul Roos Gimnasium replacement scrumhalf, Tristan Armitage, steered his side to a memorable victory of 21-18 over Garsfontein in the main match of the opening day of the Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley.

Armitage is the first-choice scrum-half of the Maroon Machine but started from the bench for this important clash against the Garsie Bere.

Armitage dictated play and added the necessary impetus to the team from Stellenbosch’s effort to turn the tide in the second half of the encounter.

In the first half, there were only one team on the field, and it was the Garsie Bere. The team from Pretoria led by 15-7 at the break. Tries by wingers Neil de Kock and Yuvrah George led the charge.

George’s try after a perfectly timed and weighted pass by flyhalf, Ruan Fluks, was one of the highlights of the match. Paul Roos only entered Garsies’ half of the pitch twice in the first half, with hooker, Lehan Barnard, crossing the tryline in one of these visits.

Paul Roos definitely also missed the boot of Travis Pheiffer at flyhalf, but his replacement, Daniel Whitehead‘s kicking at goal, also played a major role in their victory as he converted all three of his side’s tries. In the pack of forwards, Werner de Bruin (eighthman) was his side’s best player, while Cadynn Samuels (left wing) was dangerous every time he was put in possession.

The team from Pretoria, led by captain and eighthman Lourenz de Jager and hooker Justin Blom, led the physical charge up front.

The hosts, Diamantveld, gave their loyal supporters something to cheer about as they defeated Queen’s College by 40-29 with some exciting running rugby. Diamonds led 21-10 at half-time thanks to tries by Tyler Campher (fullback), Mikyle Muller (right wing) and Heinrich Swart (eighthman).

Campher was superb throughout, and it seemed that he had time to spare when in possession. They also managed to unlock space for their wings, Muller and LJ Buys, almost at will, against a side well known for its backline play.

The highlight of the match was, however, the try by the replacement scrumhalf, VJ Davids, which started mere metres from his own tryline. The home side’s forward also deserves a pat on the back as they came out on top in the physical battles.

Nico Malan of Humansdorp bagged a memorable 31-24 victory over EG Jansen of Boksburg.

Their fullback, Leighton Lawrence, was well-deservedly named Man of the Match for his performance. He had his kicking boots on and converted all four of his side’s tries and slotted a penalty, which proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Their flanker Erich van Zyl was a livewire and also deserves a mention.

Not even icy cold and relentless rain could halt the hosts, Die Hoërskool Menlopark, as they opened the Fairtree Sport Festival with a commanding 64-12 victory over Hoërskool Tygerberg on Friday in Pretoria.

Parkies dominated up front, laying a strong attacking platform through their powerful scrumming and accurate lineout work, which was an impressive feat in the challenging conditions.

The spotlight up front fell on hooker Jannes Eksteen, who controlled the driving maul superbly and was rewarded with two tries.

Loosehead prop Dean Field also earned a reward for his impressive scrumming and crossed for a try of his own.

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the hosts’ backline thrived. The return of Dylan Stumke at inside centre made a notable difference. He demonstrated his versatile skill set by using his powerful left boot to keep the Tigers pinned deep in their half, on defence.

Jody Abrahams, who took on the role of fullback, settled in as if he had worn the no. 15 jersey all season long, bagging a brace of tries, thanks to his lively performance.

However, none shone brighter than Menlo’s left-wing Zander Hamman. He impressed with a series of powerful runs, one of which resulted in a well-taken try. He then compounded the damage with his boot, converting seven of his nine attempts at goal to contribute 19 points to his side’s tally.

Despite the heavy defeat, the try of the day, arguably, belonged to Hoërskool Tygerberg‘s fullback Calvin Hitmana, who brought the small Western Cape contingent to their feet with a superb solo effort, which began in his own 22 and saw him slice through multiple defenders on his way to the try-line.
