CAPE TOWN. – The defending champions of the Khaya Majola Week (for u19 players), the Central Gauteng Lions, saw their chances of retaining their title suffer a major setback on Monday, the opening day of the tournament.

The Free State defeated them by 22 runs on BishopsFrank Reid Oval.

The winning side put up 195 runs, thanks mainly to their opening batsman Christian Kind (90), who was well supported by Dakalo Leketa (48). Together, the pair added a vital 80 runs for the fifth wicket.

Gauteng mustered 173 all out in response. Corné Botha (46), Armaan Manack (37), and Richard Seletswane (25) were the only batsmen to offer strong resistance.

For the Free State, Darion Rabie (3/24), Otto Krause (2/14), and Meyer Pretorius (2/17) caused most of the damage.

Another early favorite to win the title also suffered a setback on the opening day when The Titans went down to Boland by 24 runs.

Batting first, Boland tallied 219 all out, with JJ van der Sandt (59), Chad Ayford (45), and Jevohndré Jacobs (44) making the biggest contributions. Charl Prinsloo excelled with the ball, dismissing four Boland batsmen for only 24 runs.

Even though Divan de Villiers (70) and Lethabo Phahlamohlaka (33) shared a partnership of 100 runs for the Titans’ fifth wicket, it wasn’t enough to get their team over the line as they were dismissed for 195.

Leolan Davids (4/30) undermined the Titans’ batting effort with his four-wicket haul.

The hosts, Western Province, began their week on a winning note by defeating the Tuskers by six wickets. Last year’s South African Schools’ captain, Beni Hansen (58), led the way with the bat.

He and Siyabonga Venge (57) crafted a partnership of 104 runs for the third wicket.

The DolphinsBandile Mbatha (5/16) claimed the only five-wicket haul of the first day in his team’s tight two-wicket victory over Eastern Province.

EP was restricted to just 107 all out, but they nearly managed to pull off an upset. However, the Dolphins’ captain, Ross Coetzee (39*), kept his cool to guide his team to a win.

Easterns scraped a nail-biting one-run victory over the Garden Route Badgers. Easterns’ SA Schools’ player Parth Patel was one of the game’s standout performers with a versatile display that included 24 runs with the bat and a bowling return of 2/16.

The Eastern Cape Iinyathi has the most experienced side at the tournament and it showed as they comfortably defeated Northern Cape by nine wickets. Ryan Denston (4/15) and Canton Hartnick (3/18) made life difficult for the losing team’s batsmen, who were restricted to 120 all out.

Gauteng t. Vrystaat (Bishops); Westelike Provinsie t. Tuskers (Rondebosch Boys’ High); Dolphins t. Oostelike Provinsie (Wynberg Boys’ High); Titans t. Boland (SACS); Noordwes t. Uitnodigingspan (UCT); Oos-Kaap Inyathi t. Noord-Kaap (Curro Durbanville); Mpumalanga t. Limpopo (Pinelands); Oostelikes t. Garden Route Badgers (Hoërskool Durbanville).

  • Khaya Majola Week a stepping stone for future Proteas

The annual Khaya Majola Week will return to Cape Town for the first time since 2018. It will be the fourth time since 1994 that the Mother City has hosted this prestigious cricket week.

Cape Town also hosted the tournament back in 2002 and 2011.

The Khaya Majola Week is still a major stepping stone for cricketers in South Africa. In 2018 the week produced current Proteas like Tristan Stubbs (Eastern Province), Gerald Coetzee (Free State) and Marco Jansen (North West).

This year Richard Seletswane of the Central Gauteng Lions will be looking to join a special club of players. Seletswane has collected three South African Schools’ caps thus far. He made the side in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Only five other players have managed to be selected for the SA Schools side four or more times. Dassie Biggs (Eastern Province, 1963, 1963 Engeland, 1964, 1965), Smokey Featherstone (Transvaal, 1966, 1967, 1967 Engeland, 1968), Barry Richards (Natal, 1962, 1963, 1963 Engeland, 1964) and Neil Rosendorff (Free State, 1962, 1963, 1963 Engeland, 1964).

Hylton Ackerman tops the list with six SA Schools caps in 1962, 1963, 1963 England, 1964, 1965 and 1966.

Since unification, no player has managed to have the honour of representing the SA Schools’ side more than three times. Besides Seletswane four other players boast three SA Schools’ caps since 1994.

They are Zwelibanzi Homani (Eastern Province, 1999-01), Tulani Ngxoweni (Border, 94-96), Jacques Rudolph (Northerns, 1997-99) and Wayne Parnell (Eastern Province, 2005-07).

Three of Seletswane’s teammates of 2023 – Benni Hansen (Western Province), Jorich van Schalkwyk (Titans) and Parth Patel (Easterns) are also back to see if they could get a second cap.

Hansen captained the national schools’ side last year and could become the first player since unification to lead the side twice. Patel produced the best-ever bowling performance during last year’s tournament in Makhanda when he grabbed seven wickets for a mere 15 runs against Northern Cape.

The previous record belonged to Du Pavillon who bagged seven wickets for only 18 runs against North West in 2012.

Four members of the South African u19-side which reached the semi-final of the u19 ICC World Cup earlier this year will also be in action in Cape Town. They are Seletswane, Sipho Potsane (Gauteng), Nqobani Mokoena (KwaZulu-Natal) and Steve Stolk (Titans).

Hansen, Esa Gangat (Eastern Province) and Raeeq Daniels (Western Province) have also been capped at u19 level. Three kingpins of the national u19-side Kwena Maphaka (Central Gauteng), Lhuand-ré Pretorius (Titans) and Riley Norton (Boland) were eligible to play at this year’s tournament but were not available for selection.

Maphaka will be part of the senior Protea squad for the vital test series against Pakistan, while Pretorius was not released by the Titans senior side. Norton who made both the SA Schools rugby and cricket sides in 2023 has decided on rugby as his career of choice.

In total there is also seven Colt-players from 2023 which will be looking to upgrade their caps to SA Schools’ ones. They are Muhammed Bulbulia (North West), Sabelo Mabanga (Easterns), Potsane, Dakalo Leketa (Free State), Simon Liversage (Northern Cape), Enathi Kitshini (Garden Route Badgers) and Daniels.

In the three previous weeks in Cape Town, it was an equal contest between bat and ball. In total 19 centuries were scored while 18 five-wicket hauls were picked up during the three tournaments of 2002, 2011 and 2018.

These three specific weeks have however produced some fine talent towards the Proteas’ fast bowling attack over the years. In 2018 it was Jansen and Coetzee, while 2011 produced Anrich Nortjé (Eastern Province), Lizaad Williams (Boland) and Daryn du Pavillon (KwaZulu-Natal Inland).

In 2002 the Khaya Majola Week produced future Protea pacemen in Vernon Philander (Western Province), Morné Morkel (Gauteng) and Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Eastern Province B).

The IberCup South Africa, which started on Thursday, 12 December, concludes on Monday.

Sunday’s action at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) AW Muller Stadium was all about the playoffs for both the gold and silver championships for the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

In the boys’ competition, the 2010 age group proved to be the most exciting group of the tournament, with the high level of the first three days continuing.

In the gold championship quarterfinals, Kaizer Chiefs scored a narrow 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven. It was a far tighter clash than their earlier meeting in the group, where Chiefs scored an eye-opening and decisive 4-1 win.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys enjoyed an easier time in the semi-finals, beating Team Gauteng 3-1.

Kaizer Chiefs are set to face Paris Saint Germain (PSG) in the final following PSG’s 2-0 victory over SL Benfica in the semi-finals.

A tough battle is expected. Chiefs won when they met in the group, but only just, squeezing out a 1-0 victory. They would be more than satisfied to repeat that scoreline in the title decider.

One of the notable age groups in the tournament is the 2006 age group, where Clapham High School has stood out as one of the most engaging teams. They’re aiming to add the championship title to their collection of trophies, which includes winning the Absa Wilderklawer Soccer Tournament earlier this year.

Clapham takes on RCD Espanyol Academy Johannesburg in the final match. Clapham secured their place in the main game with a hard-fought 1-0 win over German International S.A. in the semi-finals, while RCD Espanyol Academy Johannesburg advanced to the final after defeating Total Football Excellence 2-0.

In the 2009 age group, an exciting Tshwane derby is set to take place on Monday in the gold championship match, with Mamelodi Sundowns tackling Tuks in a Pretoria derby for the title. It’s a contest that is not only about lifting the trophy. It’s a clash about pride and bragging rights and the adrenaline will be flowing just ahead of kickoff.

The semi-finals featured four Gauteng Development League teams, with Sundowns edging out SuperSport United 1-0, while Tuks handed Joburg City a 2-0 defeat.

  • Refilwe Ladies FC living the dream at IberCup

Refilwe FC's new Director of Football, Claudia Raposo.
Refilwe FC’s Director of Football, Claudia Raposo.

Matches in the 2008 age group at the IberCup South Africa girls’ competition have captivated fans and sparked surprise with unexpected outcomes highlighting the improving quality of women’s football in South Africa.

The age group has produced a range of astonishing results, disappointments, and unforgettable moments, with the Refilwe Girls’ Football Club (FC) being one of the teams at the forefront of the excitement.

Despite being established only recently, in January 2024, Refilwe Girls’ FC has already established itself as a noteworthy addition to girls’ football. The club’s focus is on fostering women’s football while ensuring that the young athletes are not subjected to excessive pressure.

Under the leadership of passionate football enthusiast, Lebo Ramodike, the club has made significant strides. After a challenging start to the competitive Gauteng Women’s Development League, Refilwe finished the season strongly. It also made a crucial move when it appointed the highly experienced Claudia Raposo as its Director of Football.

Mondli Dube, the GWDL Administrator, said he was pleased to witness Refilwe’s success: “Refilwe is one of those teams with a clear vision and they have a proper structure. I’m happy for them and I hope many GWDL teams are learning from them,” he said.

“They don’t only prioritise football, but they also prioritise education. I selected them to go participate in IberCup among the five other teams because I was impressed by their organisation. Not only do they have young and talented players but they have a goal. They are working towards something.

“Refilwe has done what no other team has done. Remember, this team is barely one year old. They keep on inspiring us. To the chairman Lebo and his team, keep pushing. I can’t wait to see what they’ve in store for us.”

SuperSport Schools Plus caught up with the club’s founder, Lebo Ramodike to talk about its IberCup experience.

Ramodike expressed his admiration for the young athletes, noting that Refilwe finished top of Group B with 10 points after three wins and one draw.

The progress his club had made since the beginning of the year is a source of pride for the club’s founder and the players.

Refilwe FC founder Lebo Ramodike and the club's new Director of Football, Claudia Raposo.
Refilwe FC founder Lebo Ramodike and the club’s Director of Football, Claudia Raposo.

Ramodike also told SuperSport Schools Plus that the club intends to establish an u13 team.

During the IberCup, he brought in three young players – Owami Zihlangu, Wandisile Legodi, and Siphesihle Khumalo – to experience the excitement of the event, despite not being part of the active playing squad. Although they are quite young, that trio has already participated in the GWDL with the u14 and u16 teams.

The idea behind the inclusion of the three players was to expose them to the club’s 2025 vision for u13s at the club. “We are going to be aggressive in the development of girls at a primary school level. We’re going to recruit more players,” Ramodike shared.

Ramodike said that it is important for them not to pressure young players. “I think [that with] saying development, we have less pressure on the players. Indirectly. they deliver results without [us] putting pressure on them.

“As soon as we start talking about results, results, results, the pressure increases, so, for us, we just want our players to enjoy football and learn, as we also learn from them.”

Michael Bender, the CEO of IberCup South Africa, expressed his admiration for the quality of women’s football showcased at the event. He noted that the level of play is impressive, with clubs like Refilwe flying their flag high

Bender said there is outstanding talent in South Africa and highlighted the importance of nurturing that talent within both the boys’ and girls’ ranks. He further expressed his satisfaction with the participation of over 20 girls’ teams in the IberCup.

While recognising the continuing improvement of girls’ football in South Africa, he remarked on the slight margins between some of the top teams, a viewpoint which was supported by a 1-1 draw between the formidable Mamelodi Sundowns and Tuks in a Group A fixture in the 2008 age group competition.

Sundowns entered the clash with a pressing need for victory, yet their Pretoria rivals were resolute in their efforts to disrupt the Brazilians’ ambitions, which ultimately led to Sundowns’ elimination from the gold semi-finals.

Tiro van Rooyen, the u17 Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, who guided the Brazilians’ boys to the title in the Gauteng Development League (GDL) in November, was present to observe and support Sundowns in their match against Tuks. Following an unsatisfactory outcome for the GWDL champions, Van Rooyen discussed the IberCup South Africa with SuperSport Schools Plus.

“I think it’s an incredible experience, a good tournament as well. A lot of teams, different teams from around the country, and around the world,” he enthused.

Van Rooyen also praised the standard of women’s football, “The women’s teams or ladies football has grown immensely, so we’re busy watching Sundowns and Tuks, that’s an opportunity for us coaches to learn from them, because you learn every single day.”

He commended the performance of Sundowns’ ladies, despite their coming up short of the semi-finals, and also lauded the exceptional efforts of the Tuks’ defenders, especially their goalkeeper, who stood between ‘Downs and victory.

  • Titans bounce back against Badgers, Easterns boss North West

After a loss to their neighbours, the Tuskers, the Dolphins cruised to a comfortable win over Boland at the 2024 CSA Boys u16 Week in Pretoria. Photo: Sydney Seshibedi/Gallo Images.

After successive defeats, The Titans bounced back and secured a comprehensive victory over the Garden Route Badgers at the CSA u16 Boys Week in Pretoria on Friday.

Relive all the action on SupersSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

Entertaining innings, by Keamogetswe Semenya and Righardt Joubert, saw the hosts thump the Badgers by a whopping 173 runs.

Semenya, who is enjoying a good week, batted patiently once again, laying a solid foundation for those to follow with a well-played 81 runs.

Joubert, a shining star in the middle order, dialled up the pressure with aggressive running between the wickets to notch his first half-century of the week, contributing 75.

Vihan Pretorius was also in the runs again, making 33, to help his side to a healthy 269/9 in their 50 overs.

The Titans’ bowlers found their rhythm quickly, too. Rehaan Patel and Neoentle Makwela were equally impressive, with both snapping up figures of 4/21, as the Badgers slid to a disappointing 77 all out.

Daylenn Williams was the shining light for the side from the South Western Districts, enjoying a good outing with the ball as he picked up four wickets while conceding 55 runs in their losing effort.

The Tuskers, after a defeat against Western Province, got back to winning ways with a narrow eight-run victory by the DLS Method over the high-flying Central Gauteng Lions.

Akhil Bharath came to the party by tearing through the heart of the Lions’ batting line-up to finish with a sparkling 5/20. He played a key role in keeping the Gauteng batsmen in check after Ombesa Matsha had given them a solid start by scoring 53.

The Tuskers’ Obakeng Motsepa also deserves a pat on the back for his batting effort. In tough conditions, he stuck manfully to his task to record a crucial 51 runs, which helped his side place a tick in the win column.

The other team from KwaZulu-Natal, the Dolphins, rolled to a five-wicket victory over Boland.

The Western Cape side batted first but found the going tough, tallying 134 all out. Abriam Jacobs played well for 43, but leg-spinner Shiraz Perumal snared 3/34, while David de Bruyn, Tristan Delvin, and Bonga Maphanga bagged two wickets apiece cheaply.

In the Dolphins’ reply, Kyle McGough played the anchor innings, 57 not out, while his Westville Boys’ High team-mate, Tristan Delvin, finished on 34 not out, as the Dolphins recorded a convincing win.

Ronan Meintjies, with 2/8, and Dion Slabber, with 2/20, were the pick of the Boland bowlers.

Eastern Province’s Connor Parry, with a second half-century on the trot, was at the forefront of another EP victory, this time by a comfortable 53 runs on the DLS Method over Western Province.

Michael Kruiskamp, the spearhead of the Western Province bowling attack, was on song once more, knocking over 5/31. His outstanding effort was well counter-balanced by Sulaymaan Gangat‘s off-spin, however, which brought him a decisive return of 4/24.

In the Gold Pool, Easterns were too strong for a fired-up North West side. The talented all-rounder from Kempton Park, Stephan Vermaak led the way, striking an unbeaten 79 to see his side to a big eight-wicket victory via the DLS Method.

The Eastern Cape Iinyathi celebrated a comprehensive win over a wounded Mpumalanga team.

Ambese Linda took it to the Mpumalanga bowlers and was rewarded with his team’s highest score of 58 as the Iinyathi totalled 201/8. In the bowling department, Awonke Mgini led the Eastern Cape side, capturing 4/18 to restrict Mpumalanga to a meagre 77 runs.

Free State‘s Daniel Hattingh terrorised the Limpopo Impalas’ batsmen, claiming four scalps for only 23 runs as the Impalas struggled their way to only 90 all out. FG Botha was once again the main contributor with the bat for Free State, scoring 27,  as his side bounded to an easy victory.

  • Zambia completes the double at u17 Cosafa tournaments

Zambia celebrates after the Cosafa u17 Girls’ Championship final between Zambia and Lesotho on 13 December 2024 at the UJ Soweto Stadium. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu /BackpagePix.

Zambia completed the double at the u17 Cosafa tournaments, winning both the girls’ and boys’ competitions in Johannesburg on Friday.

The u17 Zambian girls’ team ran riot against Lesotho, thrashing their opponents 15-0 in the final at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus.

It was a nightmare Friday the 13th for Lesotho as the Copper Princesses raked in the goals, not letting up until the final whistle sounded.

With the victory and the title, Zambia proved why they are currently the leading nation in development football in the SADC region.

Mercy Chipasula scored a jaw-dropping seven goals in the title decider, while Masela Sekeseke weighed in with a hat-trick. Hellen Banda grabbed a double, and Wendy Mwikisa, Janet Chirwa, and Lilian Mwenda all scored a goal as Zambia lifted the winner’s trophy with a superlative effort.

The Zambian boys’ team followed in the footsteps of their female counterparts, capturing the TotalEnergies u17 CAF African Cup of Nations | Cosafa qualifier with a hard-fought 2-1 defeat of Angola.

In an entertaining and competitive clash, the Angolans battled tooth and nail to pull off an upset. However, Abel Nyirongo gave the Zambians the lead after they had dominated the first half. But, with two minutes to go to the break, Omar Oliveira’s freekick deflected off a defender and went into the back of the net to pull the Angolans level.

The Zambian domination continued in the second half, and it appeared to have paid dividends in the 70th minute when Emmanuel Mbuti was brought down inside the box by Josemar Vicente. Abel Nyirongo stepped up to take the shot, but his effort was rejected by Gelson Dala.

Zambia’s control of the contest was eventually rewarded, though, when Jimmy Banda played Nyirongo in for his second goal to complete the Cosafa double for his country.
