This Saturday Lichtenburg will be going south to Klerksdorp for their FNB Classic Clash which is sure to be keenly contested.

Neither of these schools have shied away from top opposition. Both have played the impressive Garsfontein side. Lichtenburg lost 80-20 and Klerksdorp lost 61-21. Those are the only opponents they have in common.

Lichtenburg have played against Montana of Pretoria, Centurion and Menlopark and lost but they have beaten Ben Viljoen, Frikkie Meyer and Brits.

Klerksdorp have played against and lost to Eldoraigne, Florida, Potchefstroom Volkies, HTS Middelburg, EG Jansen and Jim Fouché. They have beaten Pietersburg. Those are all tough opponents.

    Preview – Eldoraigne vs. Zwartkop

The FNB Classic Clash in Centurion this Saturday is between Hoërskool Eldoraigne and Hoërskool Zwartkop at Eldoraigne.

Last year when Zwarries won at home, it was one of the school’s successes that it most enjoyed. It seems unlikely that they will manage to replicate that victory. They have played nine matches and won just the first, against Riebeeckrand. For the rest they suffered heavy defeats except for HTS John Vorster who won 22-18. Their worst defeat was against Centurion who beat them 83-0.

On the other hand Eldoraigne did better against better opposition. The beat Hudson Park of East London, Trinityhouse, who beat KES this season, Rustenburg, Marais Viljoen and Klerksdorp. They lost to Hentie Cilliers of Virginia, Kempton Park. Hugenote of Springboks who are having a wonderful year, and Menlopark.

Of the two teams who met last year, only one player is back again this year – Eldo’s centre Marnus Venter.

Preview – HTS Drostdy vs. Worcester Gimnasium

Worcester Gym play hosts to HTS Drostdy as part of a raft of interschool activities, culminating with the 1st XV match on Saturday – all part of an FNB Classic Clash.

The 1st XV matchg is not one you would expect Drostdy, who rejoice in the name Donkeys, to lose. They play their rugby in different company.

Drostdy plays top schools all over South Africa and is always on or close to the FNB Top 20.

This year Drostdy have beaten Menlopark of Pretoria, Rustenburg, Glenwood of Durban, Stellenberg of Cape Town, Harmony of Virginia in the Free State, Strand and Charlie Hofmeyr of Ceres. They have lost to Transvalia of Vereeniging, Oakdale of Riversdale and Monument of Johannesburg,

Worcester Gymnasium have lost more than they have played, even though at a tier below Drostdy. They lost to Hermanus, Hugenote of Wellington, Swartland, Despatch and Oudtshoorn. Their victories have been over Bellville, Otto du Plessis and Milnerton.

The only team they have in common is Hugenote of Wellington. Drostdy beat them 19–3 while Gym lost to them 46-16, There is clear disparity there.

There is even talk of another 2010 result. That was when Drostdy won 58-7. But them came 2011 when Drostdy battled to win 15-9 and then the 15-all draw in 2012.

You may well expect the Donkeys to win but the unlikely is not impossible.

    Preview – Itembelihle vs. Ndzondelelo

It is a big day in Zwide Township on the fringes of Port Elizabeth when Itembelihle Comprehensive School play Ndzondelelo in an FNB Classic Clash. And that is happening this Friday.

At Itembelihle there is a remarkable schoolmaster – The Pieterse who for years played top club rugby in Port Elizabeth and played for Eastern Province B. He has been coaching at the school for over 30 years and because of his energy and dedication Itembelihle is the best-known township school in South Africa, and just lately he has been receiving sponsorship which enables his players to play well beyond the confines of Port Elizabeth.

Itembelihle have to preserve the honour of the past in going for their eighth consecutive victory but the truth is that this has not been a great year for them. They have had scores of 50 or more scored against them by Die Brandwag and Daniël Pienaar of Uitenhage, and three Northvaal schools, Die Anker, Hoërskool Middelburg who play HTS Middelburg in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday, and Merensky. They lost to Cambridge of East London, David Livingston (6-5) and, last week, Nathaniel Nyaluza.. But they beat Uitenhage 43-5.

Ndzondelelo’s results were not as alarming. They lost (in moderation) to Humansdorp and John Walton, beat Bertram and drew with Solomon Mahlangu.

This may just be Ndzondelelo’s year.

    Teams

Itembelihle: 15 Akho Tshoba, 14 Chumani Mtimkulu, 13 Tyson Smondile, 12 Khanyiso Pini (captain), 11 Slovo Dzaka, 10 Anele Gans, 9 Ayabonga Mteto, 8 Mbulelo Shuwana, 7 Luntu April, 6 Sbongile Nqweniso, 5 Attie Faku, 4 Diva Busakwe, 3 Yanga Mpabanga, 2 Sedge Thysse, 1 Lungelo Mngomezulu

  • Preview – Middelburg HS vs. HTS Middelburg

There is an FNB Classic Clash in Mpumalanga’s cold Middelburg with the coal-laden air when excitement in the town heightens as HTS Middelburg’s Rooi Bulle take on the men in green. That it is a classic Clash will add lustre to the occasion.

Traditionally it has been a match that the Rooi Bulle win. They are after all perennially one of the strongest teams in the country. But then there was 2009 when the Middies pulled off a huge surprise by winning and an even bigger one by winning by such a large margin – 33-10. It’s good to know that an upset is always possible in sport.

This year HTS Middelburg are again strong and are currently ranked 12th on the FNB Top 20. They play much stronger opposition that the Middies do. The Rooi Bulle have beaten EG Jansen, Transvalia, Florida, Zwartkop and Nelspruit once, but lost to them once and drew with Centurion. The Middies had good wins over Potch Gimmies, Hoogenhout and Die Anker. They beat and lost to HTS Welkom and just lost to Hugenote of Springs and Stellenberg, two strong sides.

The captain of the Mpumalanga side at the 2012 Craven Week was Willandré Kotzenberg. He is back on the flank this year, Lock Michael Basson and prop JP Zaayman were also at the 2012 Craven Week.

It could be a fascinating game – 2009 repeated?

The matches will be played at Hoërskool Middelburg.

  • Volkies meet Gimmies

It’s the land of Sarie Marais, the great mealiefields of the Western Transvaal on the banks of the Mooi River, the Transvaal’s oldest town.

And it is the second FNB Classic clashes in a town known as an educational and farming centre. Earlier this year Potchefstroom Boys’ High played HTS Potchefstroom. Matches like these provoke a great deal of interest, in the quiet and lively town.

There was earlier this season an FNB Classic Clash on the banks of the Mooi River – a different Moor River. That one was in KwaZulu Natal.

In 2012, after Volkies had ruled the roost for six consecutive years, Gimmies turned the table on them and won 24-16, They have just two back from last tear – Marchelle Hatting, a wing last year and a fullback this year, and lock Albert Lubbe. Volkies have just three back – fullback Ulrich Aspeling, outside centre DJ White and Dalton Viljoen.

Their seasons have been similar. They both play against strong opponents. Volkies have lost to Hugenote of Springs, a strong side, Garsfontein and Transvalia while they have beaten Klerksdorp, Driehoek and Noordheuwel.

Gimmies have lot to Florida and HTS Louis Botha and beaten Jeugland and Bastion.

They should be good opposition for each other.

The FNB Classic Clashes will take place this year at Gimmies.

  • Boishaai head for Bloem

    Boishaai head for Bloem

This year the Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match between Grey College and Paarl Boys’ High will be played in Bloemfontein as Boishaai moives its army up from the Cape on a great trek to Bloemfontein.

Last year Grey went south and were well beaten by Boishai, possibly even more comfortably than the 28-18 victory they enjoyed, at one stage leading 28-6.

They are traditionally poerful rugby schools in South Africa. At present Grey are ranked fourth on the FNB Top 20, Boishaii sixth. There is noting much betrween themBothg sides have lost to Outeniqua and both have beaten Oakdale. In addtion Boishai lost to Waterkloof and Glenwood while Grey lost at home to Affies in what was an excellent schools match, one of the best,

Of the teamns playing this Saturfday, Boishaai have only rapid Dante van der Merwe back from the team that won last year – a wing last year, a flyhalf this year. Grey have five bac=k from the side that lost last year – elegant fullback EW Vilojoen with the counterattacking flair, scrumhalf Heinrich Sander who is the vice-caoptain, lock Dylan Harlen and both props – Ruan Kramer and Andrew dui Plessis.

The signs are that it will be a close affair.

  • Glenwood go up to Maritzburg College

It has become the major KwaZulu Natal schools rugby encounter – Maritzburg College and Glenwood – this year at Goldstones. And this year it’s an FNB Classic Clash.

In the days of Skonk Nicholson, College dominated but in recent times, as Glenwood have put in a greater, more concerted effort and College have lost something of their aura of invincibility, Glenwood have become the ones with winning ways. In the last six years the boys from Umbilo have won six, College two and two have been drawn. One of those College wins was in 2010 when they were expected to lose. They won a handsome 35-16.

This year both schools have given DHS a hiding, both have lost to Paul Roos and both have been too good for Michaelhouse. The only other opponent they have in common is Framesby of Port Elizabeth, Glenwood beat them by two points while College drew with them 16-16.

Glenwood have played somehow stronger opposition but have improved of late when they included a win over the powerful Paarl Boys” High side. Early on College had a good win over Grey PE.

One would expect home ground to be an advantage for College.

Grey se nr. 15 van toeka tussen 2 vure

BLOEMFONTEIN.

Vandag se wedstryde (tuisspanne eerste) is: 10:30: Reitz t. Ladybrand; 11:00: Paul Erasmus (Senekal) t. Wilgerivier; 11:10: Bothaville t. Hennenman; 11:30: Marlow Landbou t. Diamantveld; 11:30: Vrede t. Harrismith; 11:30: Hentie Cilliers t. Hoërskool Kroonstad; 11:45: HTS Welkom t. Goudveld; 12:00: AHS Kroonstad t. Witteberg; 12:15: Welkom Gimnasium t. Voortrekker; 12:30: Zastron t. President Steyn; 12:40: Jim Fouché t. Louis Botha; 13:00: Grey-kollege t. Hoër Jongenskool Paarl; 15:00: Landboudal t. Kathu.
