School of Rugby Rankings – 18 April 2016

SOR NuusThere were quite a few surprises over the weekend with Ben Vorster’s 34-19 victory over Jeppe High School for Boys’ on Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) in Johannesburg perhaps being the biggest upset. The surprise victory for the team from Tzaneen ended Jeppe’s unbeaten record this season.

It also saw Ben Vorster jump from 27th from last week on School of Rugby’s rankings to position number 20. Jeppe slips to ninth. It is important to remember that our rankings only takes into account matches being played thus far in the season and we don’t do any projections as were we think teams will finish.

Other upsets includes Queen’s College ending Selborne College’s unbeaten status with a 33-29 victory on Reunion Day while HTS Daniel Pienaar from Uitenhage surprised Grey High School with 24-20. The team from Uitenhage lingers just outside our Top 30 at the moment.

Affies of Pretoria is still number one after beating Diamantveld of Kimberley convincingly by 64-17 in the Jacaranda City. Paarl Boys’ High extended their unbeaten run to 26 matches in a row with a 58-12 victory over Diocesan College (Bishops). Grey College of Bloemfontein defeated Louis Botha by 50-0 with 16 minutes left on the clock. South Africa’s premier rugby factory is currently in the third position on our rankings.

The clach between Affies and Grey College in Pretoria might just be the determining factor on who will finish on top of School of Rugby’s rankings for the 2016. The season is however still long. Wildeklawer will give us a good indication were the teams find themselves and the rankings might settle a bit more after the tournament.

Of the Top 10 schools only Glenwood and Jeppe won’t be in action next weekend at Wildeklawer in Kimberley. Glenwood will attend the annual Sanix Youth Invitational tournament in Japan.

Rondebosch Boys’ High is the only school to be excluded from our rankings at the moment as they’ve only played two matches against South African opposition thus far.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously.

Paarl Gimnasium defeat Paul Roos 28 – 24 in front of their home crowd in Paarl for a second succesive victory in this annual Premier Interschools clash.

Both teams scored 4 tries a piece in a stop start game. The home side dominated up front for most of the match while the visitors made too many mistakes.

Paarl Gim were first on the scoreboard as captain and scrumhalf Zak Burger slipped through the defence to get the first try of the match.

Theo Boshoff was on song with the boot succeeding with his first of 4 conversations. Burly Paul Roos Number 8, Bruce Coetzee, was next to cross the whitewash after a telling break by Flanker Handré du Toit. Damian Willemse slotted the conversion to level the scores.

The home side regained the lead with 6 minutes to play in the first half. Prop, André Booysen, crashes over for a converted try taking the half time scores to 14-7.

Paul Roos Scrumhalf, Tiaan Coetzee, scored down the blind side closing the gap to two points. Their captain and SA schools flyhalf, Damian Willemse, had a rare bad day off the tee, missing two of his conversions.

Zak Burger, then connected with his number 8 to score a converted try. His opposite number Coetzee replied from a strong Paul Roos lineout drive to close the gap to 21-19.

Paarl Gim eightman, Muller Uys, rounded off his well-deserved man of the match performance with a try of his own. Boshoff added the extras to extend their lead to 9 points with 5 minutes to play.

The visitors added some respectability to the score with a late try by replacement Adion Topley. Willemse missed the conversion.

Paarl Boys’ High extended their unbeaten streak to an impressive 26 matches by defeating Diocesan College (Bishops) by 58-12 in Paarl. Boishaai’s season is beginning to pick up pace after a slowish start. The team’s match-up against Affies at Wildeklawer in Kimberley promises to be one of the top school rugby games of 2016.

Boishaai’s fullback, Gianni Lombaard, continued his good form as he contributed 23 points to his team’s total. He scored one of his side’s nine tries of which he converted six and also slotted two penalties. He was also the hero in their last-gasp 29-27 victory over Outeniqua in George the previous week.

Stellenberg kept their unbeaten status with a convincing 78-5 victory over Primrose RFC after already leading 26-0 at the break. Their winger Angelo Davids scored his ninth try of their last three matches by dotting down four times in the match. Davids also scored four tries in his side’s previous encounter against DF Malan. Flanker Johan van der Merwe also completed a hat-trick against Primrose.

  • Preview – Jeppe High School for Boys’ vs. Ben Vorster

Preview – Jeppe High School for Boys’ vs. Ben Vorster

NewsG JeppeThe Emirates Airline Park (formerly Ellis Park) faithful are in for a treat of exciting running rugby this Saturday. And we are not talking about the mouthwatering SuperRugby clash between the Emirates Lions and the DHL Stormers which kicks off at 19:15 in Johannesburg.

We are referring to the curtain raiser for this clash between Jeppe High School for Boys and Ben Vorster from Tzaneen. Jeppe is one of the top school boy rugby teams in South Africa this year with two South African Schools’ stars, Wandisile Simelane and Hacjivah Dayimane, in their squad. The school from Johannesburg’s first XV is ranked sixth on School of Rugby‘s latest rankings.

Ben Vorster has been the top school team from Limpopo for quite some time. The school from Tzaneen’s first XV has been crowned champions of the Beeld Trophy four times. Twice in the Big Schools section (2008 and 2010) and twice in the Medium Schools section (2006 and 2013).

Jeppe High School for Boys has recorded some impressive victories over Kempton Park (29-0), Waterkloof (12-7), Eldoraigne (33-18), Queen’s College (41-20) and Pretoria Boys’ High (59-18) thus far in the 2016 season. Ben Vorster are also featured in School of Rugby latest rankings in the 27th position.

The battle between the two teams’ fullbacks, Tyrone Green (Jeppe) and Danny Mokhoabane (Ben Vorster), will likely be responsible for most of the exciting rugby during the match. Mokhoabane represented the Limpopo Blue Bulls at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Stellenbosch last year, while Green would’ve made the Golden Lions squad for the tournament if it wasn’t for an injury.

Every time Green touches the ball something is about to happen. He is never caught by the first or second defender when he decides to launch a counter attack. Which happens most of the time as Green prefers to run the ball back at the opposition rather than kicking for territory.

Ben Vorster’s eightman, Stefan Engelbrecht, winger Pule Molokomme en scrumhalf, Eduan Smit, also represented Limpopo at last year’s edition of the Craven Week.

    The teams:

Jeppe Boys’ High: 15 Tyrone Green, 14 Moemisie Mosheledi, 13 Wandisile Simelane, 12 Cameron Burke, 11 Mangaliso Ntimba, 10 Nathan Grove, 9 Dylan Wadeley, 8 Hacjivah Dayimane, 7 Duncan Tverdon, 6 Tebogo Ramodibe, 5 Gary Edwards, 4 Travis Cameron, 3 Douglas Cutter, 2 Nolo Naka, 1 Marc Harmieson. Replacements: 16 Joshua Harrison, 17 Francois Meyer, 18 Kegan Litchfield, 19 Mpho Tjamela, 20 Tumi Nameka, 21 Thorne O’Connell, 22 Kyle Grundling.

Ben Vorster: 15 Danny Mokhoabane, 14 Pule Molokomme, 13 Heini Ferreira, 12 Muzi Nyakane, 11 Rueben Ragolane, 10 Jonathan Viljoen, 9 Eduan Smit, 8 JJ Anker, 7 Stefan Engelbrecht, 6 Reuben Koekemoer, 5 Welmar Pieterse, 4 Shama Manzini, 3 Barend Lombard, 2 Bernard Vermaak, 1 Jannie Jordaan. Replacements: 16 Frans Pohl, 17 Tumi Mononyane, 18 Ruben Jordaan, 19 Franco Oberholzer, 20 Pieter Haasbroek, 21 Johan Buitendag, 22 Shima Mphahlele.

  • Fixtures for the Grey High Rugby Festival

Fixtures for the Grey High Rugby Festival

GREY High have set themselves up for what should be two entertaining contests when they take on Parktown and Durban High School in the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival, supported by Powerade, at the end of April.

Although reducing their annual festival to two days, the Grey organisers have still managed to provide a feast of rugby on April 30 and May 2, with a total of 64 matches – 32 each day – to be played.

The games range from U14 clashes to the first team showdowns and include a diverse group of schools. Not surprisingly, there will be a strong Eastern Cape flavour, while sides such as St Alban’s St David’s, Parktown, DHS and Goudveld High from Welkom will add an extra dimension from schools outside the region.

Despite losing their unbeaten run this season to Paul Roos on Saturday (April 9), Grey will be looking to put in a strong performance during their festival, playing the feature match (15.45) each day.

They will open with an interesting test against Johannesburg side Parktown, a team they last played in 2014 when they romped to a 66-3 victory. Parktown have had mixed results this year, with two wins and three defeats.
It suggests they will have a tough clash against the hosts, whose mobile pack, led by SA Schools No 8 Khwezi Mafu, and potent backs will test them to the full.

DHS should be a bigger challenge for Grey on the Monday as the Durban school have produced some notable results this season.

While their first team have had some difficult seasons recently, this year DHS have registered wins over KwaZulu-Natal rivals Hilton, while suffering narrow losses to Kearsney (26-22) and Bishops (27-24). In addition they pulled off a fine 31-17 win over Grahamstown’s St Andrew’s in the St Stithians Festival and they will be eager to prove themselves in the final match of the festival.

DHS will warm up for their match against top PE township school Ithembelihle and should not underestimate the local side. Ithembe may lack the resources of the leading rugby schools, but their passion and commitment can never be faltered, especially given this rare opportunity to show what they can do.

Ithembelihle will be in action on the second day against St David’s, of Johannesburg.

A team rarely seen in Port Elizabeth is Goudveld High, more commonly referred to as Gouties. Schools rugby in the Free State schools operates in a competitive environment and the Welkom team will be watched with interest.
They have an opening match against East London side Stirling, who have had a tough start to their rugby year, and then face against perennial Border powerhouse Dale on the second day.

Another top Border team, Queen’s, will be keen to prove their credentials against two PE teams. Their opening clash will provide a major challenge for Summerstrand outfit Pearson and they will then feature in the main curtain-raiser on the final day against Framesby.

With Grey ending off against DHS, those two games should provide a cracking finale to the festival.
