School of Rugby Rankings – 4 April 2016

SOR NuusLast year’s top ranked team, Paarl Boys’ High, extended their unbeaten run on the rugby field to 24 matches with their four victories thus far in 2016. They also deservedly held on to their top spot in School of Rugby’s first rankings for the 2016 season.

With Affies, Grey College, Glenwood, Grey High School, Oakdale Landbou, Boland Landbou, Jeppe Boys’ High and Selborne College in our Top Ten also boasting with unbeaten records thus far in the season there will be quite some movement to come during the season in the rankings.

The performances of Affies and Grey College so far indicates that they will be contenders for the number one ranked spot in South Africa this year.

If a team is ranked higher than another team is doesn’t mean that the higher ranked team will beat the lower ranked team when they meet during the season. Our rankings only take into consideration matches already played by each team and not the potential of the teams. Garsfontein defeated Paarl Gimnasium by 15-13, but Paarl Gimnasium is still ranked higher at the moment. Garsies also lost to EG Jansen from Boksburg and are ranked higher.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. If you want to see a team’s results thus far you just have to click on their name in the rankings. Usually we wait until after the annual Easter Festivals to release our first rankings of the season. This year Easter Festivals was quite early on the school rugby calender so there is quite a lot of teams that haven’t played a lot of games which made this first rankings quite difficult to compile.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@schooolofrugby.co.za – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.

  • Theron names provisional Junior Springbok training squad

Theron names provisional Junior Springbok training squad

Junior Springbok coach Dawie Theron on Friday named a provisional 36-man training squad as the preparations begin to take shape for the World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Manchester, England, from 7 to 25 June.

Theron invited 56 players to a trials camp in Cape Town this week where they were put through their paces with fitness, skills and medical test to determine if they have what it takes to represent the Junior Springboks at the World Championship.

The trials camp concluded on Friday morning with a high-tempo training session at the City Park Stadium in Crawford.

A number of players who are nursing injuries, which have ruled them out of action for at least the next two weeks, were not considered for the provisional training group. However, they will be in contention for selection for the training squad once they have recovered.

The provisional training squad included JT Jackson (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Tinus de Beer (Vodacom Blue Bulls) and Marco Jansen van Vuren (Xerox Golden Lions), who were members of the Junior Springbok squad that earned a bronze medal in the 2015 World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy.

2014 SA Rugby Craven Week Player of the Year Curwin Bosch (Cell C Sharks) features alongside a handful of 2015 SA Schools team players including, Western Province’s Ernst van Rhyn and Carlű Sadie, and Hendre Stassen, Stedman Gans and Manie Libbok from the Vodacom Blue Bulls.

The provisional Junior Springbok training squad will play a number of training matches in the next two months, which will allow the provisional training group and the players excluded due to injury to stake a claim for a place in the final 28-man squad for the international showpiece.

“It was a challenging task to trim the expanded trials squad, especially given the high quality of the players invited to the camp,” said Theron. “There were also a number of players who could not participate in training this week due to injury, and others due to their involvement in the FNB Varsity Cup Semi-finals and finals as we wanted to avoid the risk of injuries. However, I am pleased with the group we have selected and I believe they have what it takes to form a formidable unit as our preparation progress in the next few weeks.”

The players selected for the provisional training squad will remain in Cape Town, with their training base in Stellenbosch.

  • Preview of final day of the Kearsney Easter Festival of 2016

The final day of the ninth annual Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival is set for further thrilling games. The rugby on Saturday, the second day, saw some excellent matches with more exciting schoolboy rugby anticipated on Monday.

Four teams remain unbeaten at the festival: hosts Kearsney College, Glenwood High School, Dale College from King Williams Town and Selborne College from East London.

Kearsney will close the festival with the final game against HTS Middelburg. The hosts have scored 11 tries on the first two days, whilst Middelburg have scored only two. However it is the forwards from Middelburg who could dominate and starve Kearsney of ball. This could end with a very tight and intense game.

Dale, with their exciting back line, will be hoping to run Glenwood ragged. The latter matched the forward power of Middelburg and again it is the Glenwood forwards who will hope to dominate in this game and prevent too much loose ball on which Dale thrive.

Selborne, the other unbeaten team, play against SACS and this could be a cracker. The two teams look to be evenly matched, with good forwards and some talented backs. Much will come down to the defensive patterns and missed tackles could be crucial in the outcome. The game kicks off at 10h45.

Maritzburg College, the side with the least ‘beef’ at the festival, face Dr EG Jansen from Boksburg. From the first match to the second at the festival, College defence improved greatly and they will again be called upon to tackle their hearts out against some big players in the Gauteng side.

Hoerskool Noord-Kaap, another team which showed great improvement on Saturday, will play Framesby from Port Elizabeth. The latter have shown glimpses of brilliance but need to be more consistent if they wish to win this game.
Perfect playing conditions and a well-organised event have attracted good crowds to Botha’s Hill where the second day of the festival produced some cracking rugby; with a frenetic game of big forwards tussling in the tight loose in the match between Glenwood and HTS Middelburg, contrasted by an exciting spectacle of running schoolboy rugby in the game between Kearsney and SACS, which saw the lead changing six times.

At the end of the last game of the festival, talent scouts and selectors from The Sharks and Sharks Academy will award three bursaries comprising a contract with The Sharks Academy and tuition bursary with one of their academic partners.

As part of the festival’s ‘Boots and Balls’ outreach initiative, the collection of rugby kit and clothing will be handed over to the KZNRU Development Programme during the closing ceremony. The public is encouraged to leave new and good condition second-hand rugby gear in designated collection bins at the main field.

Gate entrance to the festival is R50 per vehicle or R20 for pedestrians. Ample secure parking will be available; as well as food and refreshment outlets and a KidZone for those wanting to enjoy a day of entertaining rugby. Go to www.kearsney.com for further information.

Results – Kearsney College Easter Festival 2016 – Day 2

NewsG DaleCollegeThe first match on the second day of the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival started with a moment’s silence in honour of Blake Kerdachi, the Grade 11 Thomas More schoolboy who died after collapsing in the plane on their return from a rugby tour to Hong Kong.

The Eastern Cape derby, between Dale College from King Williams Town and Hoerskool Framesby from Port Elizabeth, started with Framesby attacking. It was fullback Riann van Rensburg who was tackled just short of the try-line, but five minutes later he again created the overlap and broke through to dot down, for a 5-0 lead.

Dale then started dominating, quicker to the loose ball, getting across the advantage line and four tries were scored in quick succession. The first and last of the four were by the two centres Sibulele Mbana and Siphamandla Matsinya. A good run by scrumhalf Malwande Zamo led to a try under the posts and flank Kwanda Dimaza, who was prominent in both attack and defence, scored with a bullocking run, breaking a number of tackles. Fullback Aphelele Fassi converted three of these.

It appeared as if Framesby were facing a big defeat but they rallied in the last five minutes of the half to score a try after a lineout, when flank Bernard McDonald scored. The conversion from in front of the uprights went wide, leaving Dale 26-10 in front at the break.

The second half saw both sides having opportunities, but Framesby defence had tightened up and Dale made more mistakes. The last quarter saw Dale again start to dominate. First a long range penalty by Siphosethu Dlongodlongo, followed by a good sniping try, put Dale into a commanding 34-10 lead. Three further tries followed by Dlongodlongo, one of which was converted.

In the final minute Framesby lock Ruben le Roux forced his way over for a try, converted by Van Rensburg, to leave the score 46-17 in favour of Dale.

    Scores
Dale: Tries: Mbana, Dimaza, Zano, Matsinya, S Dlongodlongo (3); Conversions: S Dlongodlongo. Fassi (3); Penalties: Dlongodlongo
Framesby: Tries: Van Rensburg, McDonald, Le Roux; Conversion: Van Rensburg

The second match of the morning was a frenetic game with evenly matched forwards giving their all and some huge tackles preventing more than just two tries.

Glenwood put early pressure on HTS Middelburg. Stout defence kept Glenwood from scoring as forwards matched forwards. When the ball emerged from a ruck it was passed out to centre Seun Maduna who drove through a tackle to score. The conversion by Martin Hotzhausen was successful, to give Glenwood a 7-0 lead.

Middelburg did not lie down and they came back, but it was again good defence by Glenwood which kept the Durban side in the lead. Neither side could get across the line, leaving the half-time score 7-0 to Glenwood.

The intensity of the clashes continued in the second half and it was only penalties that added to the score-line for 25 minutes of the second half. One penalty by Holzhausen and two by Ryan Cloete, after each had missed one, left Glenwood narrowly in the lead.

Just three minutes from the final whistle Glenwood’s centre Holtzhausen managed to crawl over for a try which he converted for a 17-6 win.
