De Swardt sluit hom by uitgelese geselskap aan

SA Colts: Jean du Plessis (Glenwoodhouse, k), Gerald Coetzee (St. Andrew), Jarred Alder (Marais Viljoen), Sinalo Gobeni (Western Cape Sport School), Siphamandla Krweqe (Dale College), Muhammed Mayet (King Edward VII), Mihlali Mpongwana (Western Cape Sport School), Zakariya Paruk (Clifton), Jiveshan Pillay (Maritzburg College), Jason Raubenheimer (Selborne College), William Sendin (Somerset College), Mitchell van Buuren (King Edward VII).

  • Northerns on top in main match of Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week

Northerns on top in main match of Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week

Northerns made sure they finished the 2016 edition of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Bloemfontein as the undisputed top team when they convincingly defeated hosts, Free State, by eight wickets in the main match.

The team from Pretoria’s bowling attack restricted Free State to only 100 runs after sending them in to bat. Northerns’ opening bowler removed the top scorer of the tournament, Christopher Schreuder, without him adding a single run to his tally of 369 runs he accumulated during the week.

Swanepoel (3/16) didn’t give the Free State batsmen many opportunities to score from his bowling in his ten overs. Ruan de Swardt also got rid of three batsmen for a mere 15 runs to put pressure on the home team.

The unprecedented drought in the Free probably contributed to this year’s tournament producing a record of 15 centuries. The previous record was set back in 2008 in Port Elizabeth when 13 centuries in total were scored. Since the inception of the tournament in 1940 as the Nuffield Week, there are not a lot of tournaments that more than six centuries were recorded in.

On the last day of the tournament in Bloemfontein, another four players added their names to the list of centurions at the week.

Eastern Province’s Jarryd Lookwhy (134) and Matthew Breetzke (101) shared a partnership of 183 runs over the second wicket against Easterns.

The match between Boland and Gauteng St. Andrew’s Vossie field yielded no result after a hailstorm lagged was sent off after only one delivery in Gauteng over. The pitch was not fast enough with the sail could not cover that made it then unplayable.

Boland captain Paul Barnard (109), did manage to make his mark on the week with a century in this match.

The other century on the final day was recorded by KwaZulu-Natal Inland’s opening batsman Jiveshan Pillay (138 *) against Namibia.

  • Schreuder, van Tonder tons give Free State cruising victory

Schreuder, van Tonder tons give Free State cruising victory

The only two unbeaten teams left at the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week in Bloemfontein, Free State and Northerns, will face each other on Tuesday in the main match of the prestigious tournament.

This will be the first time in six years that Gauteng will not feature in the main match. Gauteng was also the winner of the main match of the tournament for the past three years. The last time Free State was in action in the main match was back in 2010 with the tournament’s last visit to Bloemfontein.

Free State’s opening batsman Christopher Schreuder (134) and captain, Raynard van Tonder (133 *), helped their team with a second wicket partnership of 184 runs over the fourth wicket to reach a virtually unassailable total of 353/3 in their allotted 50 overs. It also helped that the runs came at a run a ball.

Van Tonder then combined forces with Phillip Visser (53*) for an unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 105 runs at just more than 11 runs per overs.

Eastern Province’s Chris Benjamin (105*) weighed in with an unbeaten half-century but his team still ended up 55 runs short of the Free State total.

Northerns captain, Joshua van Heerden (85), and Ruan de Swardt (71 *) laid the foundation for their side’s victory of six wickets over Gauteng. They shared a 118-run partnership over the fourth wicket. De Swardt struck four fours and three sixes in his innings. Gauteng’s openening batsman Joshua Richards’ (100) century was not enough to save his team from defeat.

Easterns’s Jarred Alder (110) also scored a century in a losing battle.

Eastern’s opening batsman Jarred Alder (110) also recorded a century in a losing cause. Boland won the match by five wickets thanks to a whirlwind innings by Sinalo Gobenio (96*). He made his way to the crease with his side’s total at 108/4 in the 28th over chasing an unlikely target of 290 for the victory.

Gobeni was honoured for his performance with the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day ward. He struck 13 boundaries of the 61 deliveries he faced of which six was maximums.

An allround performance by Richard Papenfus helped South Western Districts to a convincing 160-run victory over North West. He grabbed five wickets for 21 runs and also added 46 runs with the bat in hand.

  • Free State and Northerns only unbeaten sides left in Bloem

Free State and Northerns only unbeaten sides left in Bloem

Only the hosts, Free State, and Northerns will go into the fourth day of the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Bloemfontein with their unbeaten status intact.

Free State, Northerns, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Inland were the only sides who managed to win both of their T20-matches on the third day of the tournament.

The national under-19 captain of Gauteng, Wiaan Mulder, recorded only the second century in the T20-format in the history of the tournament. Mulder scored an unbeaten 104 off just 44 deliveries against South Western Districts in his side’s first match of the day.

Gauteng scored a massive 288/3 in their allotted overs after Muhammed Mayet (45) and Josh Richards (25) laid the foundation with their opening partnership of 78 runs off just 28 deliveries.

Mulder shared an unbroken partnership with Mitchell van Buuren (70 *) over the fourth wicket.

Although Northern Cape lost their match against Free State, no one had a better day on the day than their seamer Chadwin November. He showed in both his side’s matches that he has nerves of steel and was also awarded the award as Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for his efforts.

He picked up a hat-trick as he removed Dilivio Ridgaard (24), Raynard van Tonder (0) and Christopher Schreuder (40). He trapped Ridgaard and SA Schools player Van Tonder leg before with his final two deliveries of his first over. With the first delivery of his next over he rearranged Schreuder’s stumps.

Schreuder has been the outstanding batsman for Free State at the tournament scoring 235 runs in their four matches thus far. Only Matthew Breetzke (240) of Eastern Province and Van Buuren (238) has scored more at this year’s tournament.

November also secured his side a victory in the morning session against Easterns. After both teams faced their allotted over there was nothing to choose between them.

Up stepped November to bowl the one-over eliminator in which he conceded a mere four runs while also picking up two wickets.

Northerns’ SA Schools rugby player, Ruan de Swardt, gave his bid to become the first sportsman since Adrian Penzhorn in 2001 to achieve national schools’ colours in rugby and cricket a boost.

De Swardt was the only player to pick up five wickets on the third day. He grabbed five wickets for 15 runs against Limpopo. He also added an unbeaten 30 runs with the bat in the match.
