  • Strong Junior Boks line-up named to face Argentina

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) on Monday announced a near full-strength Junior Springbok team to face Argentina Under-20 on Tuesday in Stellenbosch in the second of three friendly internationals between the countries.

SA Under-20 coach Dawie Theron made 11 changes from the team that overwhelmed Los Pumitas in the first encounter between the sides last Friday in Saldanha Bay on the West Coast.

Theron retained the lock pairing of JD Schickerling and Dan du Preez, as well as the front row duo of Dayan van der Westhuizen and Mox Mxoli.

Furthermore, several players who featured in the Vodacom Cup quarterfinals this past weekend were selected in the starting line-up for Tuesday’s clash. They are Jesse Kriel (Vodacom Blue Bulls), André Esterhuizen (Cell C Sharks), Neil Maritz (Cell C Sharks), Clyde Brink (Golden Lions) and Schickerling (DHL Western Province).

According to Theron, the intention was always to field the strongest possible team in the match.

“With the exception of Handré Pollard (Vodacom Bulls) and Thomas du Toit (Cell C Sharks) who are busy with Vodacom Super Rugby commitments, this is as close as we could possibly get to selecting a full strength team,” explained Theron.

However, the SA U20 coach added his charges will have to brace themselves for a much stronger challenge from the Argentineans.

“We know from past experience that they have always delivered their best performance of the tour in the second match. Adding to that they will be hurting from their loss in Saldanha, and we can therefore expect a tough match against a highly motivated Argentina outfit,” added Theron.

The SA U20 coach said he was very pleased with the performance in Saldanha and also satisfied with the two training sessions on Sunday.

“The climate in New Zealand will be wet and the field conditions heavy underfoot, so the rain on Sunday was a welcome sight for us,” admitted Theron.

The South Africa Under-20 team to face their Argentinean counterparts on Tuesday at the Paul Roos Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch at 15h00 on Tuesday, 6 May 2014:

    15. Jesse Kriel (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 14. Lloyd Greeff (Leopards), 13. Dan Kriel (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 12. Andre Esterhuizen (Cell C Sharks), 11. Niel Maritz (Cell C Sharks), 10. Jean Luc Du Plessis (Cell C Sharks), 9. JP Smith (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 8. Rikus Bothma (DHL Western Province), 7. Cyle Brink (Golden Lions), 6. Thabo Mabuza (Golden Lions), 5. JD Schickerling (DHL Western Province), 4. Dan Du Preez (Cell C Sharks), 3. Dayan van der Westhuizen (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 2. Malcolm Marx (Lions), 1. Mox Mxoli (Vodacom Blue Bulls).

*The replacements will be selected from the remaining training group members.

  • Kearsney College beat St Charles 43-0

Kearsney College beat St Charles 43-0

News KearsneyThe match against St Charles was played on Stott field in Botha’s Hill on a day of ideal conditions. St Charles had a strong physical pack which was assertive at line-outs and scrums. They were highly competitive and impressive at the breakdown and managed to break the Kearsney momentum at times.

Kearsney opened the score-board by turning over St Charles’ ball on attack, which allowed the Kearsney side to spread the ball to left wing David Zondi to cross over for the opening try. Tristan Tedder converted: 7-0.

St Charles was a powerhouse in the line-out drives and set up numerous plays. Kearsney struck again from a penalty move, which allowed tight head prop David Brown to score from a pick and go. Tedder converted, taking the score to 14-0.

From the kick-off Kearsney receive the ball and attacked wide with great inter-play between inside centre Sebastian Pau and right wing Langa Hlongwane, where Pau dived over for a try, 19-0. From a Kearsney lineout, Kearsney scrumhalf James Hall had a sniping run beating numerous defenders to go over for the last try just before half time. The half time score was 24-0.

The second half started with St Charles being on attack on numerous occasions, but the Kearsney defence stood tall, denying St Charles the ability to score. From a Kearsney put-in at scrum time, Kearsney flyhalf Tristan Tedder broke the line and off-loaded to outside centre James Tedder to score in the corner. Tristan Tedder converted to put the home side into a comfortable 31-0.

An impressive try worked by the Kearsney forwards allowed loose head prop Nicholas Luyt to score next to the uprights – which Tedder converted 38-0.

Flank replacement Anthony Quenet won a crucial turnover which caught the St Charles defence off guard, to allow Kearsney hooker Mzi Bam over for the final try of the day.

15 Louwtjie Steenkamp (Grey-kollege), 14 Nico Leonard (Paul Roos), 13 Keanu Vers (Grey PE), 12 David Brits (Selborne), 11 Xolisa Guma (Maritzburg-kollege), 10 Tinus de Beer (Waterkloof), 9 Herschel Jantjes (Paul Roos), 8 HJ Luus (Paarl Gimnasium), 7 Juandré Michau (Waterkloof), 6 Henry Slabbert (Grey-kollege), 5 Eduard Zandberg (Outeniqua), 4 Rhyno Herbst (Monument), 3 Tanaka Chikwezvero (Maritzburg-kollege), 2 Robin Stevens (Grey PE), 1 Gavin van den Berg (Paarl Gimnasium).

  • Junior Boks score huge win over Argentina U20

The Junior Springboks scored six tries in each half to score a convincing 78-31 victory over Argentina Under-20 on Friday in Saldanha Bay on the West Coast.
The encounter was the first of three matches as the two teams fine-tune their preparations for the Junior World Championship 2014, to be held during June in New Zealand.
South Africa Under-20 led 38-14 at halftime.
Despite choosing to play against a stiff breeze in the first half, the Junior Springboks quickly built up an impressive 31-0 lead inside 19 minutes. However, the visitors gradually found their rhythm and managed to score four tries, two apiece either side of halftime to bring the score to 45-26 at one stage.
South Africa Under-20 try scorers were Daniel du Plessis (2), Wilco Louw (2), Corniel Els (2), Dan du Preez (2), Duhan van der Merwe (2), Jaco van der Walt and Sergeal Petersen. Van der Walt kicked nine conversions.
For Argentina Pedro Ortega, Federico Gimenez, Felipe Arregui (2), Emiliano Borelli scored tries while Borelli also kicked three conversions.
Afterwards, Junior Boks coach Dawie Theron attributed the good start to the time his squad has spent together at their training camp.
“We tried a new approach this year, to keep the players a bit longer during our training camp, and although it is early days you could clearly see the result,” said Theron.
The SA U20 coach mentioned he was satisfied that his team managed to keep their momentum and ability to stick to their game plan. However, he warned Argentina will be a lot better prepared for the second encounter on Tuesday in Stellenbosch.
“They are a good side with a lot of potential and I expect them to come very hard at us in Stellenbosch.”
Theron was not too pleased with the tries his team conceded, and attributed it to some lapses of concentration either side of halftime. Theron confirmed he will have several players available for Tuesday who did duty in this weekend’s Vodacom Cup quarterfinals.
“Overall, the result was very satisfying, but it’s very early days and we will work hard during our two training sessions on Sunday,” added Theron.
The next match is Tuesday at 15h00 at Paul Roos in Stellenbosch and the final encounter takes place next Saturday at City Park in Crawford, Cape Town.

  • Grey klop Paarl Gim net-net

    Grey klop Paarl Gim net-net

KIMBERLEY.

Fortuin was weer uitmuntend.

Wedstryd 1 - Man of MatchPaul Roos Gimnasium completed a impressive Wildeklawer tournament with a 30-10 over EG Jansen from Boksburg. The latter will play in the final of the Tuks-series on 10 May against HTS Middelburg.

The team from Stellenbosch’s flyhalf, Reinhard Fortuin was once again impressive and if there was a player of the tournament announced he would’ve been one of the strongest candidates.

HTS Middelburg held on for a 12-11 victory over Boland Landbou in the opening match of the first day of the Wildeklawer tournament of 2014 at Diamantveld in Kimberley. The Rooi Bulle from Middelburg took the lead for the first time in the 45th minute of the match via their fullback Barend Smit’s fourth succesful penalty goal attempt.

Boland Landbou almost snatched the victory in the dying moments with scrumhalf, Jondre Williams taking aim at goal from 45 metres out after the hooter, but he just pushed it wide. The team from Paarl’s hooker, Eduard Snyman was over the tryline just a few minutes earlier, but referee Vusimusi Msibi judged it held-up.

The moment of the match came from Boland Landbou’s winger, Sergull van Niekerk who side-stepped two defenders to score from the halfway line to give his side a 11-6 lead. Smit kept HTS Middelburg in range with a 50 metre penalty kick just shortley after Van Niekerk’s try.

Outeniqua recorded a hard-fought 20-15 victory over Glenwood. The side from Durban took an early lead 10-3 in the first half which they dominated through two tries by flankers and battering rams McMillan Miller and James Venter.

The Kwaggas drew level through a try by fullback Corne de Klerk before prop Andrew Kuhn secured the victory with his try. The team from George dominated the second half, while the first half belonged to Glenwood.
