Zwartkop and Eldoraigne meet in high-stakes hockey showdown

Hockey Stick On The FieldPretoria rivals, Hoërskool Zwartkop and Hoërskool Eldoraigne, will battle it out for derby honours over two days, with the boys’ and girls’ 1st XI hockey matches set to shine in the spotlight.

The interschool rivalry kicks off on Friday, with the girls’ senior teams taking centre stage in an evening match. On Saturday, the boys’ first teams will complete the long fixture list.

Both matches will be hosted at Hoërskool Eldoraigne. Later in the season, the rivals will clash again at Hoërskool Zwartkop.

Zwartkop girls’ coach Martin Williams believes Friday’s showdown is more than just a regular match. It’s a symbol of tradition and school spirit.

With the teams having played a number of league games, he’s confident that his squad is ready for the challenge: “We are in the middle of our league season,” Williams said, “so we are well prepared after a good pre-season and three league games already. This week’s preparations were mainly about small adjustments and match-specific tactics.”

Last year, Zwartkop did the double, with both their boys’ and girls’ first teams emerging victorious. Despite that success, Williams insists that his team is not feeling the weight of expectation.

“It was a great moment for us, as a school, winning both games for the first time. That said, we’re not putting ourselves under pressure to replicate that. Our focus is on playing good hockey and soaking in the atmosphere,” he explained.

“It’s not every day you get to compete in front of a packed pavilion, filled with school pride and passionate supporters. For many of these players, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. My message to them is simple: enjoy every second.”

The Zwarries boys’ side is also in good form, and they’ve enjoyed a strong run in the league. Before they were held to a 2-2 draw by Hoërskool Pietersburg,  coach Connor Flowers’ side beat Hoërskool Wagpos 10-0. They also overpowered Hoërskool Hugenote (7-0) and Hoërskool Klerksdorp (12-0).

However, the annual derby between Eldoraigne and Zwartlop has been very closely contested in recent times. Since 2018, Eldoraigne has won three times, Zwartkop twice, and two matches have been drawn.

In-form Randburg headlines weekend’s fixtures with Highlands Park clash

Who would’ve thought that a small team, such as Randburg AFC, would headline a round of fixtures in a league with some of Africa’s biggest academies, including Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, and the School of Excellence?

With five wins on the trot in the Gauteng Development League (GDL), Randburg AFC has earned that position. They’ve forced football fans to sit up and take notice.

Randburg AFC’s victims include Kaizer Chiefs, an in-form Joburg City unit, and the School of Excellence. They’ve picked up an outstanding eight victories in nine games.

They’re in second place on the log, behind only SuperSport United, another team enjoying a superb season, who have lost just once, going down 1-2 to Mamelodi Sundowns a little over a month ago.

This week, Randburg AFC will face one of their toughest tests of the season when they host Highlands Park, the defending back-to-back GDL champions.

The Lions of the North are a well-coached side, and they’re also in search of redemption after dropping points in some of their recent outings.

In an exclusive interview with SuperSport Schools Plus earlier this week, Highlands Park coach Sifiso Mnguni attributed his team’s inconsistency to injuries to key players and highlighted that those key players have made a full recovery, which means they’ll be feeling confident ahead of their trip to Randburg.

In other fixtures, Mamelodi Sundowns takes on Rockefvs FC, Tuks meets the School of Excellence, and Seven’s Academy visits Remember Elite Sport Academy.

Jomo Cosmos is home to Joburg City, East Rand Athletic Club tackles Elspark United Academy, Kathorus Hyper Academy goes up against Kaizer Chiefs, and Panorama FC faces Wits Junior.

To close off the weekend, SuperSport United will be aiming to hold onto their lead at the top of the league when they play away at TS Galaxy.

  • Wounded but Willing: Dale looks to defy odds against Selborne might

Wounded but Willing: Dale looks to defy odds against Selborne might

Following another defeat last weekend, Dale College will be desperate to find the winning formula when they clash with Border arch-rivals Selborne College in a King Price Derby Series fixture in East London on Saturday at 15:30.

Although they have displayed fighting qualities in abundance, the 2025 season has not been kind to the Dalians, and they have just two victories in 11 matches to show for their efforts so far.

Last week they went down to Queen’s after staying in the game until the closing stages when a late try gave the Komani visitors a 21-13 victory.

Now, coach Royden Kennedy and captain Kamva Sithole will be urging their players to keep their heads high as they face another of their long-time Border rivals in what should be an epic showdown on Selborne’s A field.

If Dale can match their tough opponents up front, the halfback pair of Onika Boniwe and Sonwabise Dyani have their ability to ignite their backs to create some pressure for the home side.

Selborne, meanwhile, despite a number of difficult fixtures this season, will be aiming to build on the momentum after a hard-earned 27-16 win over Port Rex last weekend.

Coach Allan Miles acknowledged the pressure they came under against what he called a well- drilled Port Rex side, and that experience should stand them in good stead for the Dalian challenge.

Even with Port Rex throwing everything at them, Selborne were still able to cross for four tries (Liam Hansen, Chad Weiman, Samora Bushet and Njongo Mbanga) to secure a hard-earned victory.

The Selborne mentor will also remind his charges of the sort of form they are capable of producing by referring to last month’s match against Pearson.

The East London outfit produced one of their best displays of the season to subdue the rising challenge of the Gqeberha team, taking control up front to win 40-13.

If big Selborne prop and captain Robert John-Osunkwo and his forwards can emulate that effort, they could starve Dale of the quality possession they need to register what would arguably be an upset win over the home side.

    The teams:

Dale College: 15 Phikolomzi Mtyalela, 14 Achumile George, 13 Milani Madide, 12 Nxande Ngcaba, 11 Yamkela Molose, 10 Sonwabise Dyani, 9 Onika Boniwe, 8 Kamva Sithole (captain), 7 Liyabona Mayikana, 6 Owethu Siswana, 5 Kungawo Jaca, 4 Ebenezer Sarpong, 3 Phawu Ludwaba, 2 Lakhanya Mbewu, 1 Azole Sodlaka. Replacements: 16 Okuhle Fihla, 17 Sanele Bistoli, 18 Lubulele Ngqozela, 19 Qhawe Mtati, 20 Liyabona Mqingwana, 21 Wethumtha Malawana, 22 Inga Mafanga, 23 Luthando Madikane.

Selborne College: 15 Bungqina Nuku, 14 Samora Bushet, 13 Njongo Mbanga (vice-captain), 12 Aaron James, 11 Chad Weimann, 10 Oliver Schmidt, 9 Aaron Senekal, 8 Connor Maree, 7 Dominic Stegmann, 6 Lwandle Bacela, 5 Luca Liebenberg, 4 Matthew Beän, 3 Zothando Mrara, 2 Luke Bowman, 1 Robert John-Osunkwo (captain). Replacements: 16 Samuel van de Venter, 17 Luthango Ngese, 18 Seth Smith, 19 Travis Enslin, 20 Uviwe Jikwana, 21 Samuel Jacobsen, 22 Iviwe Kabale, 23 Linamandla Ndamase.

Liggies mik vir driekuns, Klerksdorp wil wendroogte breek

  • Amajita’s first Afcon final since 1997

Amajita’s first Afcon final since 1997

Tylon Smith, Amajita defender scored the winning goal against Nigeria in the u20 Afcon semifinals

The South African u20 National Team, known as Amajita, is through to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), u20 Afcon final for the first time since 1997.

In a heavyweight match at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium, in Egypt, on Thursday evening, Amajita defeated the record seven-time u20 Afcon champions Nigeria 1-0.

The Suez Canal Authority Stadium has proved to be a happy hunting venue for Amajita. They’ve won all the games they have played there, beating Tanzania 1-0, Sierra Leone 4-1, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

On Thursday, Amajita added another victory at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium,  despite facing challenging circumstances against the continent’s most decorated u20 team.

Tylon Smith, who plies his trade for Stellenbosch FC, has been outstanding in South Africa’s defence but, on this occasion, he made his most important contribution on the other end of the field by scoring the winning goal, with an assist from Neo Rapoo.

Rapoo whipped in an inviting cross, which Smith met with a powerful header, which he buried in the back of the goal. The strike was his first of the tournament and arguably the most important goal yet for the Amajita.

Despite Nigeria dominating the match, controlling possession while engineering several shots on goal, coach Raymond Mdaka‘s squad showed strong teamwork and resilience, characteristics that have been evident throughout the tournament.

    u20 South African National Team

Even though they have qualified for the u20 FIFA World Cup and have reached the final of the u20 Afcon, the journey is not yet complete, as famously stated by the late Los Angeles Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant in 2009, “Job’s not finished.” Amajita is aiming to go all the way.

South Africa has never before won the u20 Afcon title, finishing as the runner-up in 1997 and with a bronze medal in 2019 after defeating the Nigerians 5-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time. They, also, finished fourth in 2009 and 2017.

In the 1997 final, Amajita went down 0-1 to the host nation, Morocco. That team was coached by Shakes Mashaba and included Stanton Fredericks, Benni McCarthy, and Mathew Booth, all of whom went on to have distinguished careers in domestic and international football, and playing for Bafana Bafana.

Amajita’s coach Mdaka congratulated his team: “Yes, another win. Congratulations to the boys. What a good job! Good character, very disciplined, sticking to the agreements, tactical, technical. We truly appreciate it,” he said.

“As much it was not easy, our boys are growing in every match, growing in character and growing in everything. Thank you so much and well done boys and well done for the country.”

The u20 Afcon final takes place on Sunday and it mirrors the 1997 gold match, with South Africa taking on Morocco.

The Moroccans defeated Egypt 1-0 in a North African showdown to book their place in the title decider, thanks to a second-half goal from Jones El-Abdellaoui.

Egypt, playing on home soil, was outperformed by Morocco, who demonstrated superior skill throughout the match.

Heidelberg Volkskool t. Ben Vorster om 13:30 in Heidelberg:

Heidelberg Volkskool: 15 Tyrone Munro, 14 Theuns van der Merwe, 13 Tristan Munro, 12 Vaughn Steynvaart, 11 Pieter Greyling, 10 Marco Botha, 9 Hein Oelofse, 8 Juandré Pretorius, 7 Klaas Venter, 6 Jaco Botha, 5 Eduard Roets, 4 Werner Grobler, 3 Dean Last, 2 Henru Coetzer, 1 Reuben Bothma.

The Paarl Girls’ High first-team hockey side will be out to maintain their winning run when they host La Rochelle Girls’ High School in a Paarl Derby on Friday evening.

On a weekend that’ll see the two rivals do battle in various sporting codes, the first-team hockey fixture, scheduled for 18:00, promises to be one of the highlights.

The sides will enter the clash in contrasting form. Girls’ High will be the more confident outfit after recording a solid 3-0 win over Somerset College last week.

La Rochelle, meanwhile, suffered a closely-contested 0-1 loss against Springfield Convent School on home turf.

Against Somerset, Halle Williams found the back of the net twice for Girls’ High before Charlotte Louw completed the scoring.

That win added to a mixed bag of results recorded by coach Marc Landman’s side so far this season. Before the Somerset triumph, they drew 1-1 with Springfield, llost 0-2 against Oranje, and secured a top-10 finish at the All Girls’ Festival.

They will fancy their chances against a young La Rochelle outfit and will also use the clash as preparation for their last two matches of the term, tough outings against Rhenish Girls’ High and HMS Bloemhof, respectively.

Speaking of Rhenish and Bloemhof, the Stellenbosch powers will also be in action on Friday night.

Rhenish was held to a 1-1 draw by Herschel Girls School last week. They head to Cape Town to face a dangerous St Cyprian’s School team that defeated Parel Vallei 5-2 in their most recent match.

Bloemhof, meanwhile, will take on Reddam House Constantia at home. They’re looking to bounce back after suffering a narrow 1-2 defeat against Paarl Gimnasium last time out.

One of the matches to keep an eye out for in Cape Town, though, will be the meeting between Herschel and Springfield.

Dubbed the “Herschfield Derby“, the sides will reignite their rivalry, and it’s Springfield who will have the home-ground advantage.

Led by coach Ziyaad Ismail, the girls from St John’s Road will be confident after their victory against La Rochelle a week ago, which was decided by a goal from Jenna Kalis.

They’ll be wary, though, of a Herschel side that’s found its rhythm and mojo and has played some fine hockey in recent weeks.

Herschel is one of the few teams that has managed to combat Rhenish this season, and that will boost their confidence. Besides a solid defence, they are strong up front, and they’ll look to last week’s goal scorer, Anna Sherren, to produce her A-game once again.

In other matches around the province, Parel Vallei hosts Somerset College, while Curro Durbanville tackles Westerford High School.

Durbanville has a meeting with DF Malan, and Stellenberg faces Wynberg Girls’ High in a league match.
