  • College too good for Pretoria Boys High, Parktown makes KES sweat

The King Price Derby Series match between Pretoria Boys High School and Maritzburg College on Saturday afternoon in Pretoria delivered on expectations and then some.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

After a scintillating performance by their pack, College was victorious by a 45-28 margin.

Captain and eighthman Vasi Vyambwera made it clear from the get-go that he would be ruling the roost among the big men upfront. His barrelling runs kept the visitors on the front foot for most of the game. They also brought him two tries, with his first being College’s opener.

Hooker, Theo Boshoff delivered a barnstorming performance, as he, too, shone with some impressive runs, while his lineout throw-ins were on the money.

The game was highlighted by the physical battle raging between the two packs, but the Red, Black, and White‘s outside centre, Amahle Hadebe, still managed to steal some of the limelight from the big boys up front. Running hard attacking lines at the Candies‘ defence, he exhibited skilful attacking prowess.

Like his skipper, Hadebe made the dive for five twice. He was, in fact, the only backline player to score a try in the match.

Boys High kept bashing away at College, and, with the home crowd firmly behind them up until the final whistle, they found some rhythm in the last 20 minutes. During that time, their driving mauls forced the KZN side onto the back foot and twice they paved the way for openside flank Tristan Heinz to bag a double of his own.

Another highlight of the fierce clash was the immaculate place-kicking of College’s scrumhalf, Dom du Toit, and the Candies’ fullback, Blake Mager. Both boasted perfect records at the end of the match, with Du Toit slightly outscoring Mager after landing six conversions and a penalty. Mager, meanwhile, converted all of Pretoria Boys High’s four tries.

At King Edward VII School, in Johannesburg, the Reds‘ captain, Sam Bruwer, led by example to help his side to a narrow three-point win over a game Parktown Boys’ High School team. In the end, the reliable kicking of fullback, Indibabele Mboniswa, proved to be the decisive factor between the sides. He contributed seven points towards the KES victory, banging over two conversions and a penalty as the home team scraped a narrow 17-14 win.

Bruwer and eighthman, Chenidu Amadi, produced industrious and effective performances for the home side, and they were rewarded with a try each.

The visitors certainly earned respect with their never-say-die attitude, which tested KES from the first whistle to the last. Parktown number 8, Siya Masinga, made sure that Amadi had his hands full on defence, while right wing, Oyisa Mjiwu, rightfully and deservedly, rounded off a practice-ground move from inside his half, to give Parktown a glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t quite enough to steal a shock victory.

    SCORERS

Maritzburg College 45 (21) – Tries: Wasi Vyambwera (2), Amahle Hadebe (2), Theo Boshoff, David Colenbrander. Conversions: Dom du Toit (6). Penalty: Du Toit. Pretoria Boys High School 28 (14) – Tries: Tristan Heinz (2), Queenton Mncube, Jeffrey Singo. Conversions: Blake Mager (4).

Durban High School (DHS) made their home crowd happy with a 2-1 win over Northwood when they crossed swords at DHS on Saturday morning.

In Balgowan, Michaelhouse registered a 2-0 win over Clifton College.

“We often get distracted in trying to do all the options. Recently, I have been telling the boys to pick the best option in front of them,” Keegan Hezlett, the DHS coach, told Supersport Schools Plus after the match.

Against Northwood, DHS wasn’t distracted by a buffet of options. They knew what they wanted to achieve and chose what they felt was the best course.

One of those paths was a high press when Northwood had the ball in their half. The other was to make enterprising runs down the left flank, which was interesting, because Northwood wanted School to play down the left, and thus on the Knights‘ strong stick side.

One of the DHS presses caused a turnover in the Northwood final third and the hosts bisected the Northwood defence with precise passes before Tariq Cloete fired the ball into the back of the net from close to the penalty spot with less than five minutes left in the first chukka.

The Knights had started the game a little flatfooted, coming off a tough schedule at the KES Easter Festival last week and their matric dance the evening before the encounter. Gradually, though, they worked their way into the contest, upping their intensity. It was a typical DHS vs Northwood clash – a hard-fought, all-out effort, with little to choose between the sides.

Through the next two chukkas, the game ebbed and flowed, with School having better success at penetrating deep into Northwood’s territory, but the visitors stood firm and kept them at bay, led by a composed performance from their skipper Kyle White.

“We created many opportunities. I think we managed to play the ball against the grain. Everyone running to the front was able to find that middle player and it helped with creating space,” Hezlett said of his team’s efforts.

Three minutes into the final quarter, DHS converted one of those opportunities, from a counterattack, into a goal, with captain Josh Mungherera tapping in from an inviting pass.

Their two-goal lead lasted only five minutes. Northwood is never more dangerous than when they are down and they hit back hard at DHS, looking more like the side that went unbeaten at KES. Coach Justin Collins’ side launched persistent attacks on the DHS goal and made the game more interesting when Ryan Herselman scored with eight minutes remaining.

“I think our big thing is not having consistency,” Collins reflected on his team’s performance afterwards. “We want our practice intensity to match the game intensity.”

Northwood works on ramping up their intensity as the game progresses during training and they stayed true to that in Saturday’s game. However, it wasn’t quite enough and they went down 1-2 in the end.

In the KZN Midlands, Michaelhouse was clinical in their 2-0 win over Clifton. Coach Nick Bérichon‘s side was patient, building from the back, and their accurate passing enabled them to find spaces that led to Clifton’s circle.

Early on, they made several entries into the Clifton D and could have taken the lead but were denied by Clifton’s goalkeeper, Georg Wolhuter, who stood rock-solid between the posts.

In the second chukka, the Durban side appeared invigorated and they launched an attack deep into the Michaelhouse half. However, when they were turned over, ‘House countered down the left flank, quickly switched play to the right, and then made a circle entry on the right baseline before tucking a pass under the shoulder, which led to a well-taken strike that flew past Wolhuter high into the left corner.

Clifton gave as good as they got as the teams headed into the final chukka separated by a goal. With four minutes remaining, though, Michaelhouse made sure of victory by converting a penalty corner to run out 2-0 winners.

    RESULTS

    DHS 2-1 Northwood
    Michaelhouse 2-0 Clifton

Wynberg Girls’ High School plays host to the highly anticipated National All Girls’ Sport and Cultural Festival, which celebrates the talent, spirit, and camaraderie of young women across South Africa, from Sunday, 27 April, to Wednesday, 30 April.

This annual festival, which began in 2000, brings together government schools from across the country for four days of vibrant competition on the sports field and the cultural stage.

The festival, as usual, offers a dynamic blend of activities, including chess, cross country, hockey, netball, and tennis on the sports front, while the cultural programme includes creative writing, dance, debate, marimba performances, a MasterChef-style cooking competition, and vocal ensemble showcases.

Each event is designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and school pride.

The hockey tournament takes centre stage from 28 to 30 April and features 18 schools, many of them among the most highly regarded hockey programmes in the country.

Pool A starts with a bang, with last year’s finalists, Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria (AHMP), and Rhenish Girls’ High School, meeting in the very first game of the 63-match schedule, at 08:00 on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, in Pool B, Collegiate Girls’ High School, fresh off a successful visit to Stellenbosch, will open their challenge against Durban Girls’ High School, while Oranje will lock horns with Westville Girls’ High. This past weekend, they beat Paarl Girls’ High, who are also at the festival, 2-0.

Speaking of Paarl Girls’ High, they’re in Pool C and face another Bloemfontein powerhouse, Eunice. The hosts, Wynberg Girls’ High, are also in Pool C, and they, too, face Eunice on Monday. Paarl Girls’ High will also take on East London’s Clarendon on the opening day.

In Pool D, the action will commence with a Cape clash between Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle and Rustenburg Girls’ High School. Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof, one of the fancied teams after finishing in second place at the St Mary’s Waverley Festival, takes on Pretoria High School for Girls and Rustenburg on Monday.

All of the matches will be played at Wynberg Girls’ High.

Wynberg Girls’ Principal Jennifer Wallace expressed her enthusiasm ahead of the event in a welcome message to the participants, saying: “We are excited to welcome you to Wynberg Girls’ High School and wish you all the best with your planning. We understand and appreciate the effort involved in coordinating a tour of this nature.

“We hope that the families, friends, and supporters of your schools will all join us to support the participants.”

It always takes a special team to beat Grey College at home in Bloemfontein. And this year’s team from Paarl Gimnasium is a special bunch of players.

Gimmies handed Grey College its first defeat at home since 2017 with an emphatic 43-31 victory in the City of Roses.

Watch this King Price Derby Series clash again on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Their captain and outside centre, Markus Muller, is an exceptional rugby player. Muller scored a brace in the victory but also helped create a couple more scoring opportunities for his side.

Muller also won the first round of the battle for the SA Schools No. 13 jumper against Ethan Adams. The national selectors might still decide to combine these two in the midfield later this year.

Probably the most impressive part of Paarl Gimnasium’s victory is the fact that they outplayed and outscored Grey in the final 20 minutes of the clash. The visitors scored twice in the 60th and 62nd minutes via Johan Kleynhans and Muller to land the knock-out punch.

The two teams rested with the score at 24-all after Grey’s flyhalf, Darius Erwee, drew scores level with a penalty just before half-time. Erwee was one of his side’s standout performers.

Kleynhans also completed a brace of tries with this score, with a move that started with a turnover about 100 metres back. This had Grey on the back foot and staggering. Muller’s visit behind Grey’s posts two minutes later from the kick-off after an excellent run by lock Mighael Turner put the result beyond doubt.

This ended Grey College’s unbeaten run of 2,905 days on their home field. Their previous defeat at home was on 13 May 2017 against Paarl Boys’ High (31-46). That team of Boishaai was led by Francke Horn (Lions captain), with flyhalf, Abner van Reenen, playing the leading role.

Grey College’s lock AJ Meyer also deserves a mention for a solid performance. He will, without a doubt, be a SA Schools contender yet again later this year. He already represented the side last year. Alexi Tyropolis (flanker) and Xander Smit (captain and hooker) also tried their best.

Gimmies’ Turner received the Man of the Match, or rather King of the Match award for his mammoth effort.

    Scorers:

Doelskoppe: Liam Pringle (4). Strafdoel: Pringle. Waterkloof 24 (14) – Drieë: Dundré Tustin, Gustav Mienie, Ruan Jacobs. Doelskoppe: Ronan Bastiaanse (3). Strafdoel: Bastiaanse.

Reid Drake scored a hat-trick of goals to help Selborne College secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Queen’s College, in Komani, on Friday night.

The Eastern Cape derby was played on Queen’s College’s 167th Reunion Weekend, and the occasion saw the Chris Harker AstroTurf filled to the rafters.

Both sides headed into the clash on the back of mixed results at the King Edward VII Easter Hockey Festival, in Johannesburg, last week.

Selborne’s last outing ended in a 3-4 loss against Glenwood High School, while Queen’s suffered a hefty 0-5 defeat at the hands of the high-flying Jeppe High School for Boys.

The teams were evenly matched in the early going on Friday night as both sides struggled to find their rhythm.

The hosts, though, opened the scoring late in the first quarter after a PC drag flick by their dangerman Brett Hoffman.

Selborne wasn’t about to back down, though, and they came out firing after the break. After generating persistent pressure, they were awarded a penalty corner. Drake, who has been superb from the top of the D this season, converted to make it 1-1.

A few minutes later, he had two goals to his name, and before halftime, Drake had completed his hat-trick, with each of his goals coming from penalty corner drag flicks.

The game looked done and dusted, but Queen’s pulled one back through Aiden van Jaarsveld in the second half.

They made a late push for an equaliser, but Selborne remained resolute and secured a much-needed win away from home.

Grey High School, meanwhile, continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-1 victory over Dale College, in Gqeberha.

Earlier, in a mid-week game, Grey had handed Pearson High a 4-0 defeat, so they were brimming with confidence and had their tails up.

It was business as usual for coach Andrew Beynon’s side when the usual suspects – Dante Elkington, Athi Voigt, James Chree, Logan Goddard-Ford, and skipper Luke Tait  – found the back of the net.

While there was joy for Grey at home, Pearson High suffered a second big blow, going down 1-4 to Hoërskool Outeniqua.

Cambridge High School welcomed Graeme College to East London and grabbed a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from  Lihle Hempe and Anganathi Nyongo.

Next week, Selborne, Grey, and Pearson will be in action in the upcoming Hibbert Shield. Hosted by Grey, it runs from Wednesday, 30 April, to Friday, 2 May, and features many of the country’s leading teams.

    Puntemakers:

Affies 41 (17) – Drieë: Elwin Jansen van Vuuren (2), Stefan McDonald, Luan Potgieter, Joshua Gouws. Doelskoppe: Ruben Groenewald (3). Strafdoel: Groenewald. Garsfontein 25 (6) – Drieë: Joshua Gouws, Junaide Stewart, Drewyn Baron. Doelskoppe: Gouws (2). Strafdoel: Gouws (2).

    o.16: Affies 43, Garsfontein 24.

    o.15: Affies 19, Garsfontein 17.

  • Affies kraai koning teen Garsfontein

    Affies kraai koning teen Garsfontein
