South African College High School (SACS) playmaker Litha Kraai scored an impressive hattrick of goals to lead his side to a resounding and emphatic 6-2 win over Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) at a buzzing Brewery Astroturf in the southern suburbs of Cape Town on Friday night.

Kraai, who has been in superb form for the Cape side this season, scored in the second and fourth chukkas to help his side get back to winning ways.

Rewatch the action on SuperSport Schools

The highly anticipated clash was the second meeting between the teams in less than a week after they clashed in the final of the Hibbert Shield last weekend.

There, PRG came out victorious, winning (6-5) on sudden death penalties after being forced to fight back from a 0-3 deficit in the first half to end regulation time at 3-3.

On the other hand, SACS entered the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against Bishops Diocesan College during the week.

Just like they did in the Hibbert Shield final, coach Sam Holmes‘s team started the brighter, dominating ball possession and asserting themselves.

PRG, however, had the first opportunity to open the scoring when they received a PC eight minutes into the first chukka. Skipper Reuben Sendzul attempted a variation, linking up with Christo Swanepoel, but SACS’s shot-stopper Noah Venter was equal to the test, making his first save of the night.

PRG went on to score late in the chukka, after Joshua Smit picked up a loose ball outside the circle, drove inside, and smashed it into the bottom left corner to put his team 1-0 up after the first quarter of the contest.

SACS were quickly out of the blocks in the second chukka and equalised with a minute played through the energetic Zachary Redfern.

It was blow-for-blow after that, with both teams keeping each other at bay. However, Kraai, after being restricted by PRG’s defence, gave SACS the lead late in the quarter, scoring with seconds left, to edge his side in front at the break.

Both sides were let down by their discipline in the third chukka, with the umpires sending four players to the dugout, with PRG captain Sendzul and Hano Basson being given their marching orders for dissention and a dangerous tackle respectively. Meanwhile, for SACS, it was Reece Theunis and Kraai for similar offences.

The fourth chukka completely changed the complexion of the match.

With both Theunis, and Kraai momentarily still off the park, SACS scored their third through Head Boy and captain, Stephen Meyer, who struck with a drag flick from a PC to extend his side’s lead to 3-1.

Minutes later, it was a Cohen Williams link-up with Kraai that saw the grade 10 pupil score his second after smartly beating PRG’s shot-stopper Beor van Reenen to make it 4-1.

As the chukka went on, the hosts gained further momentum, and right back, Nick Paxton won a penalty stroke for his side after he was fouled by Van Reenen inside the circle.

The ‘keeper was shown his marching orders. Kraai stepped up against Louan van Zyl and completed his hattrick by depositing the ball into the left-hand corner to give his side a handy 5-1 advantage

PRG’s Seth Paterson found a response for the visitors, but Williams had the final say for SACS, making it a half-dozen for the hosts late in the match, to complete an outstanding performance in front of their home supporters.

“I think I and the whole group are relieved,” head coach, Sam Holmes told SuperSport Schools Plus after the encounter.

“We went through a very stressful week, playing against the top schools at the Hibbert Shield, and it didn’t go our way in the final.

“The guys had to rally tonight, and they did.

“But that’s sport, one day you’re crying in the changing room, and the next day you’re the kings of the world, so it’s a good lesson for the boys, and the coaching staff.”

Holmes admitted that a lot of mental work needed to be done after his side let slip a 3-0 lead at the Hibbert Shield final. He said his team needed to play more freely and enjoy the match.

“We did a lot of work in the week regarding mentality and how we disappeared in the final,” he explained. “We concluded that we were terrified of losing from leading 3-0 up.

“We spent the week looking within, transferring the mindset of fear of losing to being out there, enjoying it, and playing for each other.

“We had to outwork them tonight and it’s not easy to outwork a side like PRG, so I’m proud of the guys,” he concluded.

SACS will next turn their attention to a league match when they travel to face Stellenberg High School next weekend.

Meanwhile, it doesn’t get any easier for coach Michael Baker and his team as they prepare for a trip to Paarl to face Paarl Gimnasium.

  • Northwood takes down Jeppe, Grey College beats Paarl Boys’ High

Northwood defeated Jeppe High School for Boys 3-1 in Durban and Grey College overcame Paarl Boys’ High School 3-0 in Bloemfontein in two edge-of-your-seat contests played on Friday night.

Northwood was a hospitable host to their visitors from Johannesburg, but not gracious enough to let the out-of-towners grab a win in their backyard.

Justin Collins’ team followed up on the work done by the u16A and u14A teams earlier in the day. The junior sides recorded victories over their contemporaries from the highveld, and the u19s wrapped up an outstanding day of hockey for the school when they defeated Jeppe under lights.

Collins’ side did not disappoint the home crowd from the first pass-back. They came out attacking and earned an early goal through Luke Allen from a short corner. The visitors, who have a favourable history against Northwood, responded by putting pressure on the home side and their attacking intent was rewarded when they grabbed an equaliser.

The Knights were not about to let the visitors run them over on their home turf, however, especially after the winning afternoon their junior teams had enjoyed. They regained control of the contest and made it 2-1 through Mbuso Qwabe. His backhand strike was one of two outstanding goals on the night. The other was Andre Strydom’s winner, off a deflection, which hammered the final nail into Jeppe’s coffin.

“My boys played nicely tonight. It’s always nice to play against a top opposition like Jeppe, especially with the record that they have had against us. Today was also a good day for us because none of our A teams lost on the home pitch. So, that’s also a big thing for us,” Collins shared after the contest.

In the Free State, coach Wayne Coetzee and his Grey College side hosted Paarl Boys’ High. Of late, Grey has been prolific in front of goal. In their previous two encounters, they had shrugged off Jim Fouché and Fichardtpark, defeating them 7-0 and 4-0 respectively.

When you combine the momentum and confidence from their recent matches with the history, they won 2-1 against Paarl Boys last year, plus the support of the home crowd, Grey College was the solid favourite to win. And they did not disappoint.

“We were good all over, held the ball, and took our opportunity when needed,” Coetzee told SuperSport Schools Plus after the game.

Matthias Visser put on a drag flick show, firing two past the Paarl Boys’ last line of defence from penalty corners. After Visser’s brace, the hosts were in full control, dictating the pace of the contest.

Dayne Kitching put the game beyond the visitors’ reach by capitalising on a penalty corner deflection.

    RESULTS

    Northwood 3-1 Jeppe
Grey College 3-0 Paarl Boys’ High

There’s a fiery weekend of fixtures lined up in the Western Cape, with some of the best teams from the Winelands visiting Cape Town to take on southern suburbs’ sides.

Rondebosch Boys’ High has been preparing for Paarl Gimnasium after bringing Wynberg Boys’ High‘s unbeaten streak to an emphatic end last weekend.

Wynberg will be keen to bounce back immediately against Boland Landbou on the Hawthornden Field, and SACS faces the daunting challenge of welcoming the still-unbeaten Paul Roos Gimnasium.

Meanwhile, Bishops Diocesan College travels north to take on Stellenberg, while Parel Vallei attempts to tame marauding Milnerton in their own back yard, and Hoërskool Durbanville does battle with HTS Drostdy in Worcester.

The ‘Bosch boys will have no misconception about the challenge awaiting them. Gim has, despite their solitary 27-29 loss to Grey College, looked like one of the in-form teams in South African schoolboy rugby this year.

Ely Williams and JJ du Preez have been rock-steady at scrum time, while bright young talents, Freek de Kock and Markus Muller, have been tearing up their opponents’ defences.

Last weekend, however, Rondebosch showed that they are firing on all cylinders as they took down Wynberg in a comprehensive fashion.

David Kadima and Shakeel Abrahams, their wings, scored twice each against their southern suburbs’ rivals. If their pack can stand up to the big boys from Paarl, they have the potential to punish the visitors again this weekend.

Still undefeated, Paul Roos has been building its case to be considered the best team in the country this season.

They’ll keep focused on the challenge in front of them, however, as they visit SACS.

Captain and dual SA Schools’ star, Riley Norton, moves back to the second row after starring in the loose trio alongside Gert Kemp and Reuben Kruger in their last couple of outings.

SACS is coming off a very impressive 29-7 win over Bishops last weekend. Captain Nic Reynolds will aim to tap into that momentum to get his side ready for what is sure to be one of their toughest matches of the season.

Fullback Jack Benade has been an exciting player for SACS and will likely be kept busy again on Saturday.

Wynberg will want an immediate bounce-back performance, but the Boland Landbou boys are no pushovers.

They fell short against Helpmekaar (21-43) and Monument (33-38) at the Absa Wildeklawer tournament last weekend, but with talents like Hans Verster and Ruan Viviers at their disposal, Wynberg will know they face a massive battle.

Bishops heads north for an intriguing contest against Stellenberg.

Traditionally, the visitors have had the upper hand, but they’ve endured a difficult season and have been plagued with injuries, while Stellenberg appears to be rounding into form.

The Jade Brigade will turn to their forwards to gain an advantage, with captain Dale du Toit leading their charge.

Afrigter, Pieter de Waal, moes weens beserings egter noodgedwonge ‘n rits veranderinge aanbring.

  • Parktown and St Stithians set for tight hockey battle

It has been an inconsistent season for St Stithians, but they';; fancy their chances at home against Parktown Boys' High.
It has been an inconsistent season for St Stithians, but they’;; fancy their chances at home against Parktown Boys’ High.

A much-anticipated clash between Parktown Boys’ High School and St Stithians College will be one of the highlights of the weekend’s hockey action in Johannesburg.

Friday sees the junior teams in action, while Saturday features their seniors. Parktown, after a 0-3 loss at Pretoria Boys High in their last outing, will try for another away win against Saints.

Despite their defeat in Pretoria, Parktown coach Kyle Reddy believes his charges are well prepared for their showdown with St Stithians. “The preparations have been good,” he said. “At this stage of the season, we do what we do to stick to our processes.”

Last year, when Saints produced an Aitken Trophy-winning season, they were made to battle hard to down Parktown 2-1.

Looking back on that clash, Reddy said: “So, last year it was quite tight. We lost 1-2 after they scored a PC after time was up, which won them the game. It has always been a good game for us, always quite tight.”

The Parktown coach also shared that he’s been tweaking his lineup a little. He explained: “I’ve been playing around with forwards in the last few games, just giving guys an opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t.”

In other matches, King Edward VII will face a tough challenge from St Benedict’s College, who have enjoyed an impressive season.

Pretoria Boys High hosts Hilton College, knowing the visitors were stung last weekend by a loss to Michaelhouse. Coach Damian Kimfley‘s charges suffered only their second loss of 2024 on the Mansergh Astro, and they will be keen to arrest any signs of a slide.

St David’s Marist Inanda will be favoured in their match against Spring Boys’ High, which takes place in Sandton.

  • An intriguing smorgasbord of clashes set for KZN’s weekend in rugby

Rambo Kubheka helped Maritzburg College to a win over Westville on Reunion Weekend in 2023. College will seek a winning return against Michaelhouse in their 2024 Reunion clash on Saturday.
Rambo Kubheka helped Maritzburg College to a win over Westville on Reunion Weekend in 2023. College will seek a winning return against Michaelhouse in their 2024 Reunion clash on Saturday.

Saturday is a big day for Maritzburg College. It’s Reunion Weekend and a celebration of College’s 161st birthday. It’s also an opportunity for the College 1st XV to right the ship on Goldstone’s.

The Red, Black and White is coming off two big losses at the Absa Wildeklawer in Kimberley, where they faced as tough a schedule as possible, taking on Grey College and number-one-ranked Paul Roos Gimnasium. It didn’t go well.

However, there is surely no better motivation to reverse those setbacks than running out on Goldstone’s in front of thousands of the College faithful for an FNB Classic Clash against Michaelhouse.

Catch all the action live on DStv Channel 216 from 15:55.

The biggest selection call Maritzburg College has made for Saturday’s game is to play Jordan Thackeray at flyhalf. He started their season-opener against Kearsney, which College lost by two points. The difference between a team playing its first game and another playing its third was evident in that contest.

Thackeray will play opposite Luke Davidson, who was outstanding for Michaelhouse in their 24-23 victory at Hilton College last Saturday. Davidson is a complete no. 10. His tactical kicking is astute and his goal kicking is also solid. He made all of his conversion kicks at Hilton, which was pivotal to ‘House’s one-point victory.

Add into that, a drop goal and Rourke O’Sullivan‘s try, which was set up by a dummy and a surgical break, followed by a beautifully floated pass from Davidson, which opened up the outside centre’s path to the try line.

The match will feature two of the most exciting looseheads in the game, Maritzburg College captain Rambo Kubheka and Michaelhouse’s Aphiwe Shelembe. Both are solid scrummagers, but it’s their impact around the field that has garnered them fans. Kubheka took it all the way to South African Schools’ representation last year, while the younger Shelembe ran out for the Sharks at the Academy Week. He was a key ball carrier in Michaelhouse’s outstanding 2023 side.

College, of course, boasts the dangerous Luyanda Kunene at fullback. If given space, he is a potential game-breaker. What has maybe not been given enough attention is the form of Michaelhouse’s fullback Stefan Moolman, who has developed the very useful habit of getting onto the score sheet with regular visits across the opposition’s try line. His timing and instincts about when to join the backline are good.

Two questions need to be asked ahead of Saturday’s showdown. Will Michaelhouse be able to lift themselves again after their big clash against Hilton? And will Goldstone’s and their Old Boys’ Weekend enable Maritzburg College to overcome any hangover from their Absa Wildeklawer setbacks?

While College hosts its Old Boys’ Weekend, so, too, does Clifton College, who face St Charles for a second time this season. On 20 April, Saints were clear-cut winners on their Old Boys’ Weekend, racing to a 50-15 victory. Clifton will hope to draw similar inspiration from their Old Boys when the teams run out at the Riverside Sports Club.

Follow the action live on SuperSport Schools

It has been a challenging season for Clifton, in the school’s Centenary, and they’ve struggled to settle on their best lineup in the backline. That means a few tweaks again ahead of Saturday’s big game.

The Riverside Sports Club, with the Indian Ocean as a backdrop, will host Clifton's Old Boys' Weekend action.
The Riverside Sports Club, with the Indian Ocean as a backdrop, will host Clifton’s Old Boys’ Weekend action.

Athabe Mathabela cracks the nod at fullback, with Adam Selikow moving to the bench, while Enzo Marcon takes over on the right wing from Lwandile Myeni. There’s also a change in the front row, where Bandile Nhlabathi starts at tighthead.

Clifton has a lot to overcome if they are to reverse their 35-point defeat, but one of the wonderful things about rugby is that such turnarounds are not as rare as one might think they would be.

Saints, with Craig Dwyer directing their rugby programme, plays an exciting game, and they’re dangerous with the ball in hand. That is, arguably, where the difference between the teams has been most noticeable this season. The St Charles’ backline is set and, thus, a confident unit.

They possess some exciting playmakers in key positions. If Clifton is not accurate in their kicking or sound in their tackling, it could be a long day for the home team. Fullback Salmaan Mohammed is a thrilling counterattacking force, able to spark the Saints’ attack with his quick feet and skilful hands.

Clifton will, no doubt, also be wary of Saints’ big lock Raphael Ajibade. He’s a powerful and extremely athletic runner and, when the teams met in Pietermaritzburg, he crossed for three tries, including a magnificent 95-metre effort.

St Charles will deservedly be favoured to win Saturday’s game, but the home ground advantage and the stature of the occasion, Clifton’s Centenary celebrations, could have a massive impact on the performance of the home team.

After a promising start to the season, matters have gone a little pear-shaped for Kearsney College. They won three in a row to kickstart their season in exciting fashion. Since then, though, they’ve lost seven in a row. Their last victory was a famous 16-14 defeat of Maritzburg College on 9 March.

It’s not as if Kearsney has been outclassed, but they haven’t come particularly close to victory either. Last weekend, there were only 10 points in it at the end, with Northwood winning 34-24 on Stott Field, but the Knights had taken charge of the contest in the first half. They led by 19 points at the break.

Facing their local rivals, Westville Boys’ High on Saturday, Kearsney will need a strong start. That’s exactly what the Griffin produced in their two matches at the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival and, from there, they delivered attractive, winning rugby.

High in confidence after two excellent outings at the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival, Westville will be psyched up to add another win at Kearsney College.
High in confidence after two excellent outings at the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival, Westville will be psyched up to add another win at Kearsney College.

They outplayed Hoërskool Durbanville 41-17 in their opener and then ran roughshod over Dale College, sprinting to a 52-12 victory.

What would have excited the Westville coaching staff were the performances of their fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya. He was sidelined by an injury early in the season but was a dynamic presence in Westville’s wins in Gqeberha. He must be firmly in the running for a place in the Sharks Craven Week team.

His opposite number, Cameron Veenstra has played in a number of backline positions this season. However, fullback, where he now finds himself, feels like his best position. It opens up opportunities for him to attack, and he is not short of gas, and it also gives the One-Stripe a sure tackler in the last line of defence.

Veenstra has kicked well at goal for Kearsney, but Westville also has a very good marksman in Unathi Mlotshwa. He, however, won’t be in the run-on team on Saturday. He’s out through injury, as is the Griffin’s big lock, Rhys Mitchell. Jade-Will Koopman will wear the no. 10 jersey.

Rugby is all about having ball possession and making good use of it. Turning over possession is hugely valuable and when it comes to that, look no further than Westville captain Chris Cloete as a difference-maker. He’s excellent over the ball. In Gqeberha, he was rewarded for his industry with a hattrick of tries against Dale.

One more game worth mentioning takes place at Northwood, where the Knights face Jeppe High School for Boys. It should be a cracker.

  • Robbies and Worcester Gim revive contest for the South Western Rugby Shield

On Saturday, Hoërskool Robertson and Worcester Gimnasium will be competing for the coveted South Western Rugby Football School Shield for the first time since 2005.

The shield was donated in 1908 and was a point of pride in the Boland for many years until Robertson won it for the last time.

When the sides met in Worcester last season, the Gimmies were victorious by 47-21 after a dominant second-half performance saw them pull away from the visitors who kept it close at 13-14 at the break.

The Robbies have been a force to be reckoned with so far this year and Saturday’s matchup is set to be a much tougher challenge for the “Bosvarke”.

The home team’s captain, Bernardo Diedericks, has been a revelation this year. In 2023, he was a member of the SA u18 Sevens squad which earned a bronzde medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, and he’s carried the skills and knowledge gained there into this season, seemingly not putting a foot wrong.

He’s supported well by the likes of their dynamic flyhalf, Jaydan van Niekerk, and Tyron April, at fullback.

The Gimmies, however, have no shortage of pace and flair among their ranks, with flyers, Vuyolwethu Bavuma and Alungile Mothibe, on the wings.

Their front row, Amaan Adendorff, Armand Croeser and Wilfred Slingers has been just as impressive this year, and they provide a destructive extra ball-carrying options for their team.

Last weekend, the Robbies beat Swartland in a thrilling battle by one point, 24-23, they’ll be battle-hardened and ready for Saturday’s clash.

The Gimmies, however, have already been involved in several tightly contested games this year and they won’t be phased by the prospect of another tough battle, having already shown they have big-match temperament.

Meanwhile, there’s also a bunch of other exciting games taking place in the region.

The unbeaten Charlie Hofmeyr squad tackles Oakdale‘s second team in Ceres.

The matchup has produced some top-quality rugby in the past, with the Riversdal second stringers proving a more than competent opponent, but Charlies would like to make a statement with a good result this weekend.

Montagu has also been fired up this season and they will be anxious to add another victory when they host Labori, after having had to settle for a 29-29 draw against Hoërskool Punt, from Mossel Bay, last weekend.

The Punt team continues their campaign with a match against DF Malan, while Langenhoven Gimnasium and Hoërskool Oudtshoorn do battle on the Garden Route.

  • Kan Northerns sake gelyk laat trek in Diamantstad-derby?

    FOTO: Asjas Fotos
