  • College victorious over St Charles, Kearsney and Northwood share the spoils

Maritzburg College denied St Charles a first win on Pape’s Astro, defeating the visitors 2-1, while Kearsney and Northwood shared the spoils in Friday night’s KZN hockey derbies.

Matthew Coombes’ team arrived at Maritzburg College determined to improve upon their 0-0 draw from last year and bag their first victory on the Red, Black and White’s home ground. However, Kyle Emerson’s charges were equal to the task, and not only denied St Charles their mission, but defeated the visitors.

Emerson’s team was buoyed by their 3-3 draw against Westville last time out. Although they didn’t win, they imposed themselves on the Griffin in the first half of that clash, dominating possession and pressing well. Emboldened by their recent successes in front of goal, College exhibited impressive energy and speed on the offensive against Saints.

Julian Konigkramer capitalised on one of those excursions into St Charles’ final third with an early first goal. Siwa Sithembu doubled the home team’s lead in the second chukka. With a two-goal cushion, College dictated terms until the half-time break.

When the teams emerged for the third chukka, Emerson’s side was no longer as on their game as they had been before. Their ball retention was not as secure it had been previously, and they failed to create many goal scoring opportunities.

“We should have put the game to bed with many chances, and penalty corners were well run down by first wave in the first half. In the second, we did not create enough meaningful chances, except for a stroke, which their keeper saved,” Emerson said.

For their part, St Charles did their best to breach College’s wall of defence, which proved impregnable for the most part. However, their patience and effort paid off when they pulled a goal back with eight minutes to go.

Closer to the coast, a typical Botha’s Hill mist enveloped Kearsney College while the Kearsney and Northwood first teams were warming up. It eventually cleared, but only partially, which meant the tie had to be played with limited visibility. “The furthest one could see was about 30 or so metres,” Ashley Kemp, the Kearsney coach, shared.

That meant that the coaches were able to provide little input from the sidelines. The contest rested on the players’ shoulders, and they played the game by reacting to what was in front of them.

In those testing conditions, Northwood took the lead in the second chukka, capitalising on a short corner. The visitors did the best they could to maintain pressure on the hosts but, with the backing of their home crowd, Kearsney was always going to find their feet and their groove.

“What was nice to see was that the Kearsney boarding houses, all four of them, were out in their numbers to support the team,” Kemp said. The home supporters’ voices pierced through the mist and spurred Kearsney on, even with their team trailing by a goal.

Matthew Mendes de Oliveira, who has been in great form this season, has performed heroics, grabbing winners and spearheading comebacks, and he was no different in the match against Northwood. The Kearsney captain tirelessly hunted for an equaliser and was rewarded with four minutes left on the clock, giving the home crowd more to cheer about.

The two teams frenetically played out the final three minutes, each trying to find a winning goal, but it eluded them.

  • Championship Saturday at the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament!

The Maritzburg College 1st football squad.
The Maritzburg College 1st football squad.

The winner of the third annual Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament will be determined on Saturday at the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley.

Will HTS Louis Botha secure an historic third consecutive title? Or will another team rise to the occasion and dethrone the Bloemfontein boys? Those of the questions that will be answered by day’s end.
The group stages concluded on Friday, with some teams, including Maritzburg College and Clapham High School, having already secured their places in the knockout stages on the first day of the tournament.
Northwood, beaten twice – by College and Clapham – on Thursday, found their form against Blinkklip High, powering their way to an impressive 5-1 win.
The home teams, Kimberley Boys’ High and the Wildeklawer Academy also ended the group stages on a positive note. Kimberley Boys’ High outplayed Selborne College 5-0, while the Wildeklawer Academy matched that scoreline in their win over St Benedict’s College.
Into the knockout games, the defending champions, HTS Louis Botha, faced a tough challenge from the Wildeklawer Academy. It was a fiercely contested match, with both sides demonstrating why they had made it through to the business end of the competition.
Louis Botha edged it, with a first half goal, proving to be enough to see them advance. The Academy side exited the tournament with their heads held high, however, after a resilient performance which pushed the champs to their limit.
The home supporters were disappointed when Kimberley Boys’ High went behind against Navalsig High School, because of an own goal. However, just before half-time, they levelled. With no further goals being scored, the clash was decided from the penalty spot. It was tight, but Kimberley Boys’ High sneaked a 5-4 win from there to secure their place in the final six.
In another thriller, Maritzburg College and Emang Mmogo were deadlocked at the end of regulation time, with neither defence having been breached.
College ‘keeper CJ Sukraj, then, rose to the occasion and proved to be the difference, delivering a man of the match-winning performance on his birthday to see the KZN side progress 5-3 from the spot.

  • Affies to battle Rhenish for the 2024 All Girls Festival title

Affies had good reason to smile after a nail-biting penalty shootout win over Collegiate in the quarterfinals of the All Girls Festival.
Affies had good reason to smile after a nail-biting penalty shootout win over Collegiate in the quarterfinals of the All Girls Festival.

Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, Pretoria, and Rhenish Girls’ High School will meet in the final of the All Girls Festival, on Saturday morning, in Potchefstroom. Both teams were on form on Friday.

Red-hot Rhenish hit the field and breezed past Wynberg in the last eight, rolling to a 5-0 win. Then, they slipped past Oranje in the semi-finals, winning 3-1 in a penalty shootout, after the teams had finished regulation time tied at 0-0.

Rhenish built up momentum from Thursday, which included a massive 13-0 opening victory over Jeppe High School for Girls, followed by a 1-1 draw with their Stellenbosch rivals, HMS Bloemhof. They added two more wins, without conceding a goal, defeating Danville Park Girls’ High School 2-0 and Durban Girls’ High 1-0.

With three wins and a draw, and with 11 points in the bag, they topped Pool B.

Affies, meanwhile, fought tooth and nail to overcome Gqeberha’s Collegiate Girls’ High School 2-0 from the penalty spot, after a goalless draw, and then held off Paarl Girls’ High, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory to book their place in the tournament decider.

The 2023 finalist, Eunice, will face HMS Bloemhof for fifth place on Saturday. This comes after a they scored a 1-0 win over Wynberg on Friday, before going down 0-2 to their Bloemfontein rivals, Oranje.

Despite the bump in the road on day two, the soon-to-be former champions enjoyed a fair run on the opening day, when they won three matches, which included a big 9-0 win over the hosts, The High School for Girls, Potchefstroom, a tight 1-0 victory over Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, and a 2-0 win over St Michael’s, also of Bloemfontein. They were, however, beaten 1-0 by Collegiate.

Hoërskool Garsfontein defied the odds on Friday at the Hibbert Shield when they defeated Bishops Diocesan College 1-0 in the quarterfinals to reach the last four of the tournament being played on Grey High School‘s Rectory Astroturf in Gqeberha.

Catch the Hibbert Shield semi-finals action live on SuperSport Schools.

The side from Pretoria entered the prestigious tournament as one of the underdogs, but they were not short of drive and were eager to build on the momentum they’ve accrued so far this season.

In March, Garsfontein headed down to KwaZulu-Natal, where they competed in the Coastal Cup, facing Clifton College, DHS, Glenwood, and Westville Boys’ High.

They drew 1-1 with Clifton, thumped Glenwood 3-0, went down in a tight one to DHS, 0-1, and ended their campaign with a resounding 3-1 victory over Westville.

After that, coach Steve Paulo’s boys were crowned champions of the Pretoria Cup before they again travelled to KwaZulu-Natal to face Michaelhouse in two practice games, which they won.

Those positive results might have been overlooked by hockey enthusiasts when they saw the school’s name on the fixture list for the Hibbert Shield, which included many of 2024’s leading teams.

Being draw in Pool 4, where they would face South African College High School (SACS) and Pearson High School, was a difficult enough challenge in itself.

On Wednesday evening, they were one of the first sides in action, when they took on Pearson. There was little to separate the sides as they played to a goalless draw.

On day two, they faced, arguably, their toughest opposition of the season, in SACS.

Garsies knew that, after SACS thumped Pearson 8-0, all they had to do to reach the quarterfinals was go down by seven goals or less, not that accepting a loss was on their minds.

They were beaten, but they performed honourably in a 0-3 defeat. That was enough to clinch them second place in the pool and a date with Bishops, who were unbeaten this season.

Bishops expected to dominate the match but were kept at bay by the spirited Garsies’ side.

Their goalkeeper Adrian Vosloo was a dynamo between the sticks, more than once coming to his side’s rescue when Bishops looked likely to open the scoring.

Their influential captain and Northerns’ u18 Northerns representative Hein Seebach was also among the top performers on the day, alongside Luken Brunette and Zandre Nel at the back.

Just when it seemed that matters would go into extra time, Garsfontein stunned Bishops by snatching the lead with only a minute and 22 seconds left to play.

Brunette, after taking control of the ball in the middle, spotted an open field and played a brilliant through ball to Reghardt Momberg, who beat a defender and whipped a reverse stick shot into the back of the net.

There was no time for Bishops to recover and the clash ended 1-0 to Garsfontein.

The demands don’t get any easier for coach Paulo’s side as they face Paul Roos Gimnasium in the semi-finals on Saturday. That match starts at 08:15.

  • Westville’s Kearsney Tennis Tournament defence on track

Westville no. 1 Guy Vorwerk got himself into one or two interesting positions against Grey College's Nic Reis, but recorded a comfortable win, nonetheless.
Westville no. 1 Guy Vorwerk got himself into one or two interesting positions against Grey College’s Nic Reis, but recorded a comfortable win, nonetheless.

The hosts, Kearsney College, made some noise in Friday morning’s opening round of the Kearsney Tennis Tournament, which has brought eight of South Africa’s leading boys’ tennis teams to Botha’s Hill.

Up against St David’s Marist Inanda, Kearsney made full use of their home court advantage to defeat the Johannesburg side 20-5.

Paul Roos, the 14-time champions and last year’s runners-up, were on cruise control against Affies, easing their way to a 23-3 victory.

That wasn’t quite as convincing as Westville Boys’ High, the defending champions, and four-time winners, Grey College. Westville ran out 24-0 winners over Pretoria Boys High, while Grey matched that margin in their victory over Rondebosch Boys’ High.

That was, however, a prelude to a crucial Group Alcaraz tie between Westville and Grey at St Mary’s DSG in the afternoon. In 2023, Westville beat Grey 14-12 in group play before going on to claim the title for a first time. This time, there was a bigger gap between the teams, with Westville winning a hard-fought clash 17-10.

Guy Vorwerk, who has been in outstanding form on the ITF circuit, defeated Grey no. 1 Nic Reis 6-1, 6-4, while his younger brother, Rhys, playing at no.5, was an equally convincing 6-3, 6-2 winner over Bogdan Mandic.

Jovan Mandic faced Lindo Gcwensa at no.6. Gcwensa would normally play at three for Westville, but he’s carrying a quad niggle and he found, in Mandic, a never-say-die opponent. It took a super tiebreak to separate the pair, with Gcwensa winning it 10-5.

In the battle of the no. 4 players, Johannes Adam enjoyed a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Matthew Goodchild, but Lian du Toit, at no. 2, took down the usually rock-solid Matthew Wilson 6-5, 6-3 to score Grey’s only singles’ win.

The match of the day, though, belonged to George Denysschen and Ben Scholtz, with Westville’s Denysschen edging it 5-6, 6-5, 10-4.

Pretoria Boys High and Rondebosch Boys’ High, the other teams in the group, did battle at Kearsney, and it could have gone either way, with ‘Bosch claiming a 13-12 win.

Paul Roos rolled in Group Sinner, outplaying St David’s 24-0, but there was nothing in it between Kearsney and Affies, who shared a 13-13 draw.

There remains much to play for on Saturday, with the final group placings to be decided in the morning.

  • Intriguing Hilton-Michaelhouse hockey showdown on the cards

High-flying Hilton College is primed and ready for a mouthwatering derby contest against Michaelhouse on Saturday morning. It’s the latest chapter in a storied rivalry.

Catch the action live from the Mansergh Astro on SuperSport Schools

As George Harris, the Hilton Headmaster shared in the run-up to the derby, while there have been eras when the matches have been one-sided contests, Hilton and Michaelhouse have shared the spoils more often than not.

The hosts head into the tie having outplayed Glenwood 5-0 last week. Their captain, Jarred Kitto, was among the scorers, netting the fourth goal of the game. The SA u17 star was also influential in the midfield, challenging Glenwood’s defences throughout with incisive passes.

The home team will be hoping for more of the same from their captain. Leading his side to a win over their Michaelhouse would be a perfect way to celebrate his 50th cap for the 1st XI. Considering that Hilton usually does not play more than 20 matches in a season, that’s a noteworthy achievement.

However, while the scoreline against Glenwood might suggest that Hilton is an uber-attacking team, they are also robust in defence. “If you can’t defend, you are going to lose the game,” Hilton’s Director of Hockey, Devon van der Merwe, said.

The derby is a challenge Michaelhouse coach Nick Bérichon’s charges will embrace.

After falling behind early, they clawed their way back into the game and fired two goals past a finely tuned Kearsney defence in a narrow 2-3 defeat last Friday. That match spoke volumes about ‘House’s fighting spirit as they trailed 0-3 only 10 minutes into the game. It was Michaelhouse, however, who finished the stronger, launching wave after wave of attacks, which stretched the Kearsney defence.

They’ll take heart from the success they enjoyed on the flanks against the Botha’s Hill boys, and that is likely to feature in their game plan against Hilton.

Michaelhouse will be led up front by their X-factor player Gordon Deutscher. The industrious Pat Lambert captains the side.

Bérichon‘s boys have shown growth on the defensive end of the field, too, notwithstanding the three quick goals they conceded against Kearsney. They’ll be marshalled by the reliable Murray Hall-Jones, who does a good job of setting their defensive structure.

“Our character and resilience throughout the season have been brilliant, so we will come out fighting next weekend against Hilton,” Bérichon said after the match against Kearsney.

Now, that weekend has arrived and Bérichon’s charges are primed and ready to take on Hilton in front of a partisan crowd which, admittedly, will not be short of red-clad supporters.

While it’s a daunting challenge against a team that is enjoying a very good season, it is an encounter that has Bérichon’s charges excited. What better way to return to winning ways than with a win over their great rivals in the game that means the most?

    Saturday’s match starts at 11:30.

Stellenbosch’s Paul Roos Gimnasium kept their hopes of winning back-to-back Hibbert Shield titles alive by defeating Paarl Gimnasium 5-2 in the quarterfinals on Friday to book a place in the tournament’s last four at the Rectory Astroturf in Gqeberha.

Joining them in the semi-finals were the hosts, Grey High School, South African College High School (SACS), and the surprise package, Hoërskool Garsfontein.

To reach the last four, Garsfontein, who failed to register a win in the group stages, shocked Bishops Diocesan College, who were unbeaten in 2024, with a late goal from Reghardt Momberg in the fourth quarter.

Grey breezed past Westville Boys’ High, winning 3-0, while SACS were made to work hard for their 2-1 win against a stubborn Durban High School (DHS).

The quarterfinal between Paul Roos and Paarl Gimnasium was highly anticipated. It was the sides’ first meeting of the season, and it got off to a blistering start when Gim opened the scoring, courtesy of a Juan Swanepoel goal, with under two minutes played.

PRG was quick to respond, and it was their skipper, Reuben Sendzul, who led the comeback.

Sendzul, after a dangerous run inside the circle, won a penalty corner for his side and, from that opportunity, he whipped a strong drag flick into the back of the net to level matters at 1-1.

The complexion of the match changed in the second chukka when coach Michael Baker’s side raised the tempo.

Sendzul bagged a second goal after his teammate Ruben Gouws did well to earn a PC. It was business as usual for the SA u21 player, as he rocketed another drag flick into the back of the net to give Paul Roos the lead for the first time.

With four minutes remaining in the chukka, the skipper completed his hattrick after dribbling for 20 metres before sneaking a shot past Joe van Coller.

PRG wasn’t yet done and Callum van Oudsthoorn extended their advantage to 4-1 before the break.

The third quarter was a more balanced affair, with both teams scoring one goal apiece.

Barend Geldenhuys made it 5-1 to Paul Roos, but Gim kept fighting and Swanepoel, who has been rich goal scoring form, replied for the Paarl boys.

In the semi-finals, PRG tackles Garsfontein, while SACS takes on Grey High School only two weeks after beating the Gqeberha side 5-2 in Cape Town.

  • Opwinding loop hoog in Vanderbijl
