  • Sandveld-liga lewer spogrugby op

    FOTO: Jana Conradie

  • Tosi dots down twice as Parel Vallei downs DF Malan

    Photo: Olga Tosi

DF Malan laid down a challenge to Parel Vallei in Somerset West on Saturday, but the hosts successfully defended their turf, thanks to intelligent play and the exciting young talent making its way through their ranks.

With a strong wind at their backs in the first half, Parel Vallei built up an 11-point buffer which they protected through good game management after the break.

Flyhalf Shudley Rhoda pulled the strings with his intelligent kicking and his scrumhalf, Michael Kent, also made his presence felt.

It was, however, their new dangerman, Renato Tosi, who earned his first cap for Parel Vallei at the Oakdale Klein Karoo Saadproduksie Rugby Week, who stole the show.

The big no. 8 overpowered DF Malan’s defenders to score two tries as Parel Vallei recorded a well-deserved 10-point victory at home.

The visitors did their utmost to fight back in difficult conditions, but it wasn’t enough to pull back the lead the Bulldogs had accrued in the first half.

After a busy Easter, Parel Vallei has a welcome break on the forthcoming weekend before they welcome Hoërskool Tygerberg on 20 April.

Robertson put on another exciting show of rugby for their home fans as they beat an in-form Montagu.

Bernardo Diedericks, the Robbies’ star centre, played a blinder, slotting two penalties and a massive drop goal for nine crucial points.

Montagu vice-captain Ronaldo Koker‘s perfect conversion rate gave his side 21 points, after tries by Chadwin Lottering, Linden de Silva and Xolani Yanta, but the hosts had too much firepower on the day.

Stephen Kent, Roberto Koert and Groban van Wyk crossed the whitewash for Robertson, and flyhalf Jaydan van Niekerk also added seven off the kicking tee.

Meanwhile, HTS Drostdy flexed their muscles in Wellington, cruising to a 46-10 victory over Hugenote, despite facing similar windy conditions.

  • Welkom Gim witwarm teen Witteberg

  • Hugenote behou onoorwonne status in Heidelberg

  • DHS downs Westville in the rain

Two teams loaded with talent in their backlines were limited by wet and muddy conditions in Durban, when Westville Boys’ High visited Van Heerden’s Field for a showdown with high-flying Durban High School (DHS).

Both sides had impressed at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, where Westville upset Monument, and where DHS surrendered only a single try in their three matches. And both had demonstrated their power up front there, which is where most of the action, out of necessity, took place on Saturday.

Two sturdy packs and two stubborn defences went at it, and they impressed with the commitment they showed to fight fire with fire. It was a hard slog for both offences on the day.

The visitors were first on the scoreboard very early in the game when a spilled kick off resulted in a DHS player being trapped offsides and Westville flyhalf Unathi Mlotshwa stepped up to knock over a penalty from about 30 metres out.

DHS had kept three clean sheets in five matches this season already, but that record would not be improved upon.

It didn’t take long for the Horseflies to reply, however. After they hit up the ball through a number of phases, Westville was pinged for a high tackle and flyhalf Aka Boqwana‘s trusty right boot levelled matters for the hosts.

The falling rain made the underfoot conditions and the ball slippery, and both teams saw promising attacks ended by spilled catches.

After 18 minutes, a curious decision to fly-hack a high-up-and-under from DHS by Westville fullback Jade-Will Koopman led to the Griffin conceding another penalty when Michael Satade, 15 metres up the field, along with many other Westville team-mates, played the ball and was blown up for being offsides.

Boqwana, who has been one of the deadliest kickers in the early part of the season, made full use of the opportunity to give the hosts the lead for the first time in the match. It lasted only four minutes.

When DHS prevented the quick release of the ball after a player had gone to ground, they found themselves facing another penalty and Mlotshwa knocked it over from a similar position to his first, maybe a touch further out, to make it 6-6.

Soon, though, DHS had the lead again, and they wouldn’t relinquish it. Boqwana landed his third penalty, which the Horseflies had won by fiercely contesting the ball at a ruck. It wasn’t a tough kick, on the 22m line and 10m to the left of the uprights.

They surged back onto the attack and laid siege to the Westville tryline, bashing away, phase after phase, but the Griffin’s hard-hitting defence repelled them time and again. DHS took it through 14 phases, but they couldn’t get over the line from close range. Westville, however, gave away a penalty.

Then, from a scrum, it took only two phases for School to cross the tryline. Flyhalf Boqwana played Hlumelo Madikane, just outside of him, into some space and he raced through a gap into the visitors’ defensive line to add five to the DHS tally.

Boqwana’s boot delivered again, and coach Peter Engeldow‘s charges were 10 points up at 16-6.

In the second half, Westville put together a series of strong drives by their forwards, which made big dents in the DHS defensive line, and it eventually brought them a penalty. Mlotshwa made no mistake from the right of the posts, inside the 22, and it was 16-9.

Then, DHS was almost undone by the conditions when Allston Cedras spilled a pass with School on the counterattack. The slippery ball popped up and landed in the hands of Westville right wing Evan Moolman, eight metres inside the Griffin’s half. He pinned his ears back and hared off down the field.

With the DHS cover defence closing in on him, Moolman cut inside but then floated a pass back outside to Michael Satade. DHS, though, had scrambled back well and they closed down the big centre. A few phases later, Westville was penalised for going into a ruck from the side and the danger was ended.

DHS’s sure tackling brought them further points, the last points of the match, in fact, when a superb tackle around the ankles by scrumhalf Marcwin Nero stopped a Westville attack and forced the ball carrier to hold onto the ball inside the visitors’ 22. FLanker Bradley le Grange was first over the ball to do the damage.

Boqwana then made Westville pay and made it a two-score game by slotting his fourth penalty.

In the challenging conditions, there were no further points and DHS, unbeaten on Van Heerden’s in 2023, began 2024 with another “W” on their home ground.

  • Eunice to meet DGC in St Mary’s Festival final

Eunice to meet DGC in St Mary’s Festival final

Eunice and Durban Girls College will meet in the final of the St Mary’s Hockey Festival after overcoming their opponents in two thrilling semi-final matches. The match between the defending champions and last year’s number seven team will be a rematch of Saturday’s match that saw DGC triumph over Eunice 4 – 0.

Eunice will hope that they have banished that encounter out of their memories and will walk into the tie with a different mindset, while DGC will hope to reprise the nightmare.

Eunice booked their spot in the final after overcoming Paarl Gim in an edge-of-the-seat semi-final tie that could easily have served as the final. The two teams looked a little nervy in the first few minutes. The frenetic running and passing gave way to a composed contest after Bianca Rees-Gibbs scored the opener for Eunice five minutes into the match.

Both teams showed why they had made it this far with a display of organised gameplay and great structure as they felt each other out, trying to find weaknesses in the other. In their previous matches, each time Ian Naude’s charges made trips into the opposition half, they put teams under pressure with good passes, but against Eunice, they failed to connect in the final third.

Eunice’s star player, Rees-Gibbs almost made it 2 – 0 for her side when she went on a high press and stole the ball from a Paarl Gim defender close to the edge of the D. Her shot at goal beat the goalkeeper and defender but hit the post before trickling out.

Paarl Gim ramped up their attack in the last 11 minutes of the match, throwing bodies into the Eunice half. Their relentless attacking paid off when they scored the equalizer with a minute to go. As the crowd settled down and Paarl Gim threw players behind the ball in defense, Nika Coertzen’s unit launched one last attack. Favouring their right-hand side attack, Eunice fed the ball to Rees-Gibbs, who furthered her campaign for the Player of the Tournament honours with a second goal for her team with 20 seconds remaining in the match.

Durban Girls College made it to the final thanks to some sensational goalkeeping efforts from Ella Carstens. The DGC keeper, who developed her skills in backyard battles against her older brother, Jake Carstens who played for Hilton College two years ago stood tall in DGC’s semi-final tie against St Stithians.

The Johannesburg team took control of the contest early on, dominating possession and attacking the DGC goal, making numerous circle entries, with intent. In the moments the DGC defense lacked, Saints ran into a wall erected by Carstens.

Lance Louw’s charges came into the tie having done their research and marked DGC captain Emily Macquet out of the tie. With Macquet immobilized, DGC struggled to put Saints under pressure. In the moments that they entered the Saints’ final third, they were met with a strong defense.

Chardonay Penniston’s team almost found themselves 1 – 0 down with seven minutes left on the clock, but again, Carstens was equal to the task. That effort from Tori Tanner-Ellis was followed by a period of relentless attacking from Saints, but DGC was equal to the task, and the match ended in a 0 – 0 draw.

Unlike most other matches that went straight to penalty shootouts after finishing in a draw, the semi-final tie between Saints and DGC went into extra-time, with the glory goal stipulation. DGC started the five-minute period strongly, keeping Saints on the back foot, but found the Saints defense impregnable. Not even the ejection of a Saints player with just under two minutes to go weakened their defense.

The match went to penalty shootouts where DGC won by 4 – 3, courtesy of a penalty that had to be retaken after a back stick from the St Stithians goalkeeper on the final shootout.

  • Goals galore as big guns dominate in the Western Cape

Paarl Gimnasium, South African College High School (SACS) and Wynberg Boys High all racked up impressive wins on the opening weekend of the inter-schools’ season in the Western Cape on Friday night.

Gim and Wynberg scored five goals each against Outeniqua and Curro Durbanville respectively. SACS, meanwhile, topped that, netting six goals against Fairmont High School, away from home.

Entering their clash against Outeniqua, Gim, led by coach Jacques Grobler, was high in confidence after winning the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament the week before by defeating Worcester Gimnasium 2-1 in the final. It was their third title on the trot in the event.

They came off their blocks fast against Outeniqua, with Willem Matthee getting them on the board.

Gim’s skipper, LD Nel, who was recognised as one of the standout players at the Belgotex Tournament, where he topped the goal scorers’ charts, continued his prolific goalscoring form, slotting a hattrick, before Neil de Wet’s solitary goal sealed a 5-1 win for the Paarl side.

Coach Grobler’s charges will take their talents further afield over the course of the next two weekends, first facing Affies in Pretoria, before travelling to Bloemfontein to take on Grey College the week after that.

SACS were expected to beat Fairmont High School and they duly delivered, knocking in six goals to add another convincing win to an ever-expanding list of impressive one-sided victories.

Right-wing Matthew Jones scored a brace while Nick Paxton, Matthew Lassen, Aiden Hughes, and the dangerous Litha Kraai also got their names onto the scoresheet.

Coach Sam Holmes will now prepare his side for their next assignment, which is Parel Vallei next weekend at home.

Wynberg, under coach Ben Wiley, got their Western Cape season off to a confidence-boosting 5-1 win over Curro Durbanville.

They dominated ball possession and the match. Dayle Gertson was instrumental in Wynberg’s win, scoring four times, before Ethan Lee made it five in total for the southern suburbs’ side.

In other matches, Worcester Gimnasium also claimed a win, handing Swartland a 0-2 loss, with Lourens de Kock and Christiaan Joubert scoring.

    Photo: Stellenberg High School

Stellenberg High came close to pulling off an upset when they held Rondebosch Boys’ High to a 2-2 draw.

Playing at home, Stellenberg drew strength from the enthusiastic backing of their home crowd. Their goals were netted by Ben Marais and Dean Potgieter, while Martin Barnard and Jamie Hundermark hit the mark for Rondebosch.

DF Malan and Parel Vallei shared a 1-1 draw, with Sibulele Makeleni striking for Parel Vallei and Adriaan Steytler scoring for DF.

Brackenfell narrowly missed out on a win against the Wynberg Invitational team, going down 2-3, while HTS Drostdy did just enough to defeat Hugenote 1-0.

  • Jansies loop Rooibulle “Storm”

  • Lightning doesn’t strike twice as Fichies turn the tables on JF

    Photo: Kulu Ferreira

Fichardtpark came out on top after a dramatic battle against their Bloemfontein rivals, Jim Fouché, on Saturday.

The match had all the elements to be a classic, but in an added twist, the weather in the Free State had the last say as the game was cut short because of lightning.

Last year, Fichardtpark beat JF 39-33, when the sides met for the first time, but the Green Machine got one back over the Fichie Lions in the Free State League final, ending their southern Bloemfontein rival’s unbeaten season by a 31-25 margin.

On Saturday, Marno Smith scored the opening try for Fichies after a great charge forward by his loosehead prop, Zaine van Zyl. Van Zyl looks like a much-improved player since he began playing for the first team in 2023, and he will have a big role to play throughout the rest of the season as one of the seniors in this year’s squad.

Big outside centre, Duan Viviers, then turned on the afterburners to chase down an intelligent kick forward by Fichardtpark’s captain, Devanté Claasen, to give his side a commanding 12-3 lead after the first quarter of an hour.

Despite the scoreline, JF enjoyed plenty of possession and their backline kept the hosts busy throughout the first half.

Flyhalf Alldrick Johnson opened their account with a penalty goal and his side kept asking questions of the home team until Ian Nel was the beneficiary when the Green Machine mauled their way over the try line for their first five-pointer.

The neighbours kept exchanging blows until, just before the half-time whistle, MJ Hattingh barrelled over to give Fichardtpark a seven-point lead at the break.

Van Zyl was rewarded for his hard work when he scored the first try after the restart to put his side 14 points clear of the visitors.

With only 14 minutes left to play, Breyten de Wee clawed one back for JF against his old school. Before they could attempt the conversion, however, the players were asked to leave the field because of an approaching lightning storm and the game was brought to a premature close with Fichardtpark leading 24-15.

After going into half-time 19-15 ahead in Kroonstad, Voortrekker, from Bethlehem, doubled their score in the second 35 minutes while keeping the hosts, Hoërskool Trio, scoreless.

Trio had some success through their forwards in the early going, with both props, Dandré Bloem and Juandré Vorster crossing the line and their flyhalf Byron Biennas making further inroads on the scoreboard from the tee.

The Trekkers, however, upped the ante in the second period of play and outmuscled Trio.

Their big Craven Week tighthead, Cecil Parsons, scored a brace as they asserted their dominance over the Kroonstad outfit.

Despite unexpectedly slipping up against a fired-up Diamantveld in their opening match of the series, the team from Bethlehem is definitely one of the sides to watch out for this season.

Last year, they were crowned the overall champions of the Wesgrow Series, but they’ll have their sights set on the u19 A division this year, which Fichardtpark claimed in 2023 with their unbeaten run.

The Trekkers made a statement at the NMI Toyota North-South Tournament this year when they beat Helpmekaar 20-19.

With exciting talents like hooker Arnold Ras, no. 8 Dawie Fourie, and their flying fullback Kaneng Komane among the many players in their lineup capable of punishing the opposition, the Bethlehem boys are sure to deliver excitement on the park.

  • Muller-driekuns knak Boland Landbou

    FOTO: Frans Lombard

    Puntemakers:

Paarl Gimnasium 47 (19) – Drieë: Markus Muller (3), Freek de Kock, Jan Koegelenberg, Ely Williams, JJ du Preez. Doelskoppe: Freek de Kock (6). Hoër Landbouskool Boland 13 (8) – Drieë: Lyle Lewis, Juan Swart. Strafdoel: Retagen van Rooi.
