On Friday, the St Charles’ College first team continued their good run at the 2024 St John’s Basketball Tournament, on a quest to successfully defend the title they won last year.

St Charles finished top of Group A after winning all three of their group matches. On the tournament’s second day, Saints thumped a struggling Parktown Boys’ High, 62-39. It’s been a tough challenge for Parktown, who finished bottom of the group after suffering three losses.

Joining St Charles in the knockout stages, and with an eye on winning their own prestigious tournament, were the hosts, St John’s College. They were beaten by St Charles on Thursday but recorded wins over Pretoria Boys High and Parktown in their other outings.

Among the schools from KwaZulu-Natal who have joined St Charles College in the quarterfinals is Northwood School, who are fuelled by some outstanding talent, including Syamthanda Shabalala, Callum Magurno, Lusanda Hlongwane and Chadley Hargreaves. The Knights have played some outstanding basketball in recent weeks, during which they have beaten St Charles and split two games with Maritzburg College, and they finished first in Group B with three wins from three starts.

Northwood were joined by Hilton College from Group B, after Hilton shocked St Stithians in their last group encounter, winning 42-39. Meanwhile, Maritzburg College had to settle for second in Group C, after a tough loss in their first game to St Alban’s College, who were beaten by St David’s Marist Inanda on Friday.

Michaelhouse completed an unbeaten run through Group D, with a win over Clifton College. Michael Mount beat Waterford to secure second place.

St Benedict’s College, the winners of the AISJ Basketball Invitational last month, ended top of Group E, with Kearsney College in second, while King Edward VII ripped through Group F and comfortably claimed top spot ahead of ESCA Wanderers.

  • Curro Hazeldean seunsatlete oorheers by C-Bond Interhoër

    Spantotaal (Seuns):

    1. Curro Hazeldean – 1 295
    2. Pretoria Boys High – 1 232.5
    3. Die Hoërskool Wonderboom – 1 097
    4. Rietondale High School – 993
    5. Hoërskool Erasmus – 954.5
    6. Hoërskool Uitsig – 889
    7. HTS John Vorster – 863
    8. Hoërskool Hartbeespoort – 854.
  • Bishops continues dominance, West leads St David’s to victory over Hilton

Bishops continues dominance, West leads St David’s to victory over Hilton

Bishops Diocesan College continued their dominant run in 2024 by beating St Stithians in a low-scoring match by 10 runs on Friday at the Independent Schools Cricket Festival in Pretoria.

The Capetonians’ Alex Vintcent was their standout with the bat, top scoring with a mature 44 runs from 71 deliveries, which helped his team reach 185/7 from their 50 overs. Opening batsman Kashief Joseph demonstrated his batting prowess once again, improving his tally for the year by another 39 runs.

Saints’ South African u19 representative, Richard Seletswane, held up Bishops’ push for victory, showing great composure as he compiled 59 runs from 123 deliveries. Unfortunately for Seletswane, he didn’t receive any significant support, although Cayden Sunker did his bit, making 22.

Waco Bassick delivered another strong performance with the ball, putting Saints under early pressure and finishing with 3/37. Tiaan Louw (2/35) and Peyton Lee (2/39) supported him well with four wickets between them.

Joshua Meyer (2/23) was the pick of the Saints’ bowlers. Cayden Sunker (2/34) and Pranav Raichetti (2/37) also removed two Bishops’ batsmen each but, when St Stithians batted, they found the Bishops’ bowling a tough challenge.

Captain Matthew West led St David’s Marist Inanda to a 37-run victory over Hilton College, making a masterful 94 runs from 136 balls before he was run out.

He then backed up his fine batting performance by taking three wickets while yielding only 27 runs. Jason Rowles, however, was the pick of the St David’s bowlers, bagging figures of four wickets for just 20 runs.

Luke Campbell led the Hilton attack, claiming his side’s best figures of three wickets for 25 runs, while Natenzi Denega continued his good rhythm from day one, knocking over 3/38.

Robert Burman shone with the bat for Hilton, scoring a mature 58 runs from 92 runs, while James Ogilby battled manfully, scoring a well-played 47 runs.

Henricus Meyer’s return to form was a sight to behold as Helpmekaar thumped the Titans Invitation team by a massive margin of 140 runs.

Meyer cracked an unbeaten 130 and picked up 2/15 with the ball, while Anrich Liebenberg also showed his class, backing up Meyer with 58 runs, and producing Helpmekaar’s best bowling figures of 2/7.

Michaelhouse made light work of St George’s College, from Harare. Murray Hall-Jones led a batting onslaught with an unbeaten 82 runs, while Ethan Muir made 72 runs from 99 balls at the top of the order as ‘House posted 260/6.

Michaelhouse’s impressive spin twins, Cameron Strudwick (3/7) and Jean-Luc Rey (3/12) then tore the heart from the St George’s batting line-up as the Zimbabwean’s spluttered to 49 all out. The opening pair, Ross Moller (2/4) and Luke Mitchell (2/10), supported their spinners well.

Kingswood College bounced back from a loss on the opening day with an impressive five-wicket victory over a struggling Uplands College side.

David Louden laid down the law, dominating the Uplands’ batsmen to return figures of five wickets for just 18 runs. Matt Loon (3/22) ensured Louden’s wasn’t a solo effort.

Under a little pressure, Christopher Zimmerman kept his composure and hit an unbeaten 31 runs to see the side from Grahamstown over the line in the 19th over.

  • Only two remain unbeaten at Old Petrian’s Water Polo Tournament

There were fewer blowouts and matches were more tightly contested on the second day of the 19th edition of the Old Petrian’s U19 Girls Water Polo Tournament, being hosted by St Peter’s College. The event, which kicked off on Thursday, finishes on Sunday.

Several teams, who were buried under waves of double-digit margins of defeat, regrouped and worked their way back into the tournament. Only five teams – Rand Park, Springfield, Pretoria Girls, Wynberg and Reddam Helderfontein are yet to register a first win in the 27-team event.

The big guns who made a splash on day one continued to build on those results.

Coach Alex HawkinsHerschel, which boasts several Western Province u16 and u19 stars, including Kirsten Bottger and Anna Lieberman, swept the group with little trouble.

Pool A, which also has powerhouses St Stithians and Crawford in its ranks, is one of the toughest groups at the tournament. Herschel, the 2011 champions, were not unnerved by the reputations of the teams in their group, however, and they kept a clean record on their way to the top of the standings.

They prevailed 8-5 over the defending champions, St Stithians, in a tightly contested encounter, before trouncing Crawford and Alexander Road by double digits. The Western Cape outfit is a perfect six from six so far. They’re also six points clear of second-placed St Stithians, who have one game in hand.

Roedean is the only other undefeated team at the tournament. The Gauteng school has scored a mammoth 66 goals and conceded a miserly 13 on their way to the top of Pool B. The Garreth Prout-coached unit has followed the lead of their top scorer, SA Schools’ star Mia Loizides. Right now, Roedean looks like the team to beat.

Pool C has three big guns tied on 12 points each. Coach Nick Tinkler‘s Reddam Constantia leads the three-team pack because of a superior goal difference over St Dominic’s and Durban Girls College. The Hannah Banks-led unit dropped points when they faced off against St. Dominic’s, who beat them by four goals to two.

Gauteng Central u19A star Ruby Carlson was among the scorers for St Dominic’s, adding one more goal to her tally of seven from day one. She was key in St Dominic’s two victories over Collegiate and Pretoria Girls

Kayla Andrews’ sensational form for DGC spilt into day two of the tournament. The KwaZulu-Natal sharpshooter scored five against Pretoria Girls and added two more to her tally when DGC breezed past the in-form St Dominic’s. Before falling to DGC, Coach Wade Marshall‘s team had been undefeated.

Reddam Bedfordview leads Pool D after an impressive showing that saw them win three of their four group matches to end day two on 15 points.

The Johannesburg outfit is not blowing teams out of the water, but they’re doing enough to secure victory. In their three games on Friday, they scored 14 goals and conceded four. However, their position at the summit is not secure. Clarendon and St Anne’s are hot on their heels. Both teams have 12 points and a game in hand.

Parel Vallei 1st XI | Photographer: Oscar Pretorius

  • Nduku propels St John’s (Harare) to win at ISCF

St John’s College (Harare) vs Woodridge College

St John’s College, of Harare, delivered a victory for South Africa’s neighbours, outplaying Woodridge College to win by 80 runs on Friday at the Independent Schools Cricket Festival, taking place in Pretoria.

The Zimbabweans were sent in, to bat, and responded well, with opening batsman Takudzwa Nduku leading the way. He missed out on a century by only one run, striking 99 runs from 120 deliveries, with 12 fours and a six, to lay a rock-solid platform for the Rams.

Four batsmen then made it into double figures, but none reached 20, which prevented the St John’s innings from becoming a truly substantial one, but Luke Wright, with some clean hitting lower down the order, helped his team to 220 all out. Wright finished with 34 not out from 43 balls, which included five fours.

It was very much a collective effort from the Woodridge bowlers, with eight of them claiming at least one wicket. Ethan Moothoo led the Eastern Cape side with 2/18, and Lomso Zide picked up 2/25.

John-Mark Benadie then sent two batmen back to the pavilion without scoring to give the Rams an excellent start in the field. From there, Woodridge found the going tough, all except for their captain Randy Syce, who held up the St John’s charge for victory.

He made 71 and was there until near the end, eventually becoming the second last wicket to go down, and four runs later Woodridge were all out for 140.

Opening bowlers John-Mark Benadie and the Rams’ captain, Taona Zimhunga, both knocked over 2/25 for the winners, while Michael Blignaut returned an economical 2/26 from 10.

St John’s College vs Clifton College

Meanwhile, St John’s College, of Johannesburg, recorded a second comfortable win on the trot, beating Clifton College by 71 runs.

Batting first, the Houghton boys lost an early wicket to opening bowler Callum Watson, but captain Joe MacRobert joined Thomas Ievers at the crease and immediately set about the Clifton bowlers. They advanced the total to 79 before MacRobert fell, LBW to Zach Williamson for 50. His hard-hitting knock had taken only 37 deliveries and included six fours and three sixes.

Ievers went on to top score, with 65 from 77 balls, before he became one of three Rivan Moodley victims. Moodley was the pick of the Clifton attack, sending down 10 overs and picking up 3/35, while Tim Saulez contributed 2/32 and captain Shahzaad Perumal 2/44.

St John’s received a middle order boost from Cole Francis, who made 24, and Malan du Plessis then inflicted some late innings pain on the Durban side, bashing two fours and two sixes in a 29-ball cameo that produced 39 runs.

After 44.4 overs, St John’s were all out for 219.

Clifton’s reply was crippled from the start as they lost their first three wickets for only 12 runs, with Cole Francis and David Ireland doing the damage.

When Tim Saulez was dismissed for 11, Clifton had slumped to 29/4. Then, Aalok Beharie and Lawson Dinsdale put the brakes on the St John’s attack, adding 44 for the fifth wicket before Beharie became a third Francis victim, having scored 27.

Dinsdale went on to tally 34 from 64, but his wasn’t the highest score of Clifton’s innings. That belonged to Bryon Ward, often used as an opener, who played well for an unbeaten 44 from 45 balls, with four fours and two sixes.

Clifton, though, were made to pay for their poor start and St John’s them bowled out for 150.

Francis added another wicket to finish with 4/32, while Oliver Tait did a sterling job, too, capturing 3/34 from 10 overs. David Ireland continued his miserly ways, knocking over 1/12 from eight overs, three of which were maidens.

Kearsney College vs St Andrew’s College

Kearsney College and St Andrew’s College shared an excellent tussle between two well-matched teams. In the end, it was Kearsney’s captain Ross Coetzee and leg-spinner Asavela Khambule, who made the difference, scoring an unbeaten 73 and taking 4/40 respectively, to guide their side to a narrow two-wicket victory.

St Andrew’s made 183 all out, batting first, with William Beamish making 44, including eight fours, and Alex Price 43. Oliver Johns, with 24, and Joe Wostenholm, with 17, stretched the Makhanda team’s total with a 31-run partnership for the eighth wicket.

Once again, it was Khambule, who generates considerable turn, who starred with the ball for Kearsney. His four-wicket haul was critical to his team’s eventual success, while Jack O’Donovan, the ninth bowler used, boosted the Botha’s Hill bunch in a big way, grabbing 3/8 in two as he wrapped up the tail in no time at all.

There was also a neat contribution from Ross Groom, who was rewarded for his efforts with 2/28 from 10 overs.

Kearsney lost a couple of batsmen early in their reply, but Jason De Gryse, who made 28, and Ross Coetzee then joined forces to score 53 for the third wicket, which took Kearsney to 82, but they suffered a blip when Jack O’Donovan was out on 113.

Soon, two more wickets fell, and Kearsney found themselves on a precarious 124/6. Still, Coetzee remained at the crease.

The Kearsney skipper then found excellent support from Cole Young, and they added 47 before Young was out for 28, which featured three fours and a six, with the total on 171.

St Andrew’s quickly snapped up another wicket, but it wasn’t Coetzee’s, and he saw his team across the line. His 95-ball knock had produced seven fours and a six.

Samuel Scheckter emulated Jack O’Donovan for Kearsney, coming on as the ninth bowler employed and claiming three wickets. He finished with 3/17 from three. Joe Wostenholm did a tidy job with the new ball and took 2/24 in 8.1 overs.

St Alban’s College vs St Andrew’s School

St Alban’s College made it two wins from two starts when they cruised to a four-wicket victory over St Andrew’s School.

The Bloemfontein boys will feel they didn’t make the most of their opportunity at the crease, which produced an innings of 151 all out from 43.3 overs.

Boago Mothabedi had plenty to do with the Saints’ struggles. He firstly removed the openers, Naudé Botha and Leon Athanasiou, and then caught three of the other top six batsmen.

Mothabedi finished with 2/34 from seven overs, while Rohan Govind claimed 2/11 from five. Christian Visage bowled tightly to snare 2/19 from 10, and Tim Garnett joined the two-wicket club, taking 2/25 from his 10.

FG Botha was the leading batsman for St Andrew’s, striking six fours in his 34 from 31 balls, while Jonathan Hickley produced a circumspect 32.

Then, in reply, St Alban’s received solid contributions down the order to overhaul the St Andrew’s total after 33 overs.

Liam Basch was the leading run-getter, making 41 from 45, with five fours. Patrick Weir added 31, Zack Richardson made 26, and Layton Pullen 21.

Nikhil Sukraj knocked over 3/37 for Saints, and Cullen Kakora took 2/28, but the hosts secured victory with 17 overs to spare.

Cornwall Hill College vs St Benedict’s College

Batting first, Cornwall Hill College put up 180/9 against St Benedict’s College, who, much like they had done the previous day against Kearsney, bowled tidily and kept the batsmen in check.

Opener Lhuan-dré Pretorius paced the Cornwall innings, cracking nine fours and a six in his 61 from 54 balls, while Lethabo Phahlamohlaka put on a 66-run partnership with the hard-hitting lefthander, weighing in with 34 from 37.

Yuveerin Govender helped lift the home team from a fragile 127/7 to a more solid 180/9 by scoring a timely 34 not out.

Opening bowler Mihir Mangali led the Bennies’ attack, capturing 3/33 in 10, while Carl Goosen returned 2/29 from his 10. Parth Patel added another two wickets, and Ross Pengelley gave little away, taking 1/18 in nine.

St Benedict’s, in reply, didn’t come out of the gate well, losing two wickets before they had reached double figures. By the time that made it to 50, they were five-down. Then, it became 53/6 and the writing was on the wall.

Clayton Horlick battled his way to 28 from 65 balls and Mihir Mangali, in at eight, also spent 65 balls in the middle, but contributed 38. But being seven-down by the time they reached 100 left Bennies with too much to do and they were bowled out for 125, which made Cornwall Hill College the winners by 55 runs.

Lhuan-dré Pretorius, on as the first change bowler, dismissed three batsmen for only 11 runs from seven overs, while Trent Hardie claimed 2/20. Mohale Pitso bowled well, with his 10 overs returning 2/29.

    Summarised scores

  • DAY 1 | BALLING | Oranje remains unbeaten while Saints shock Eunice

Smiles all round for St Stithians after a 4-2 win over Eunice.
Smiles all round for St Stithians after a 4-2 win over Eunice.

The opening day of the 2024 Balling Hockey Festival in Bethlehem delivered upsets and goals, with teams seeking to hit their stride quickly in preparation for the new season.

The tournament is hosted at three venues, the Marlé Claasen Astro at Voortrekker, New Horizon College, and Hoërskool Witteberg.

Bloemfontein’s Oranje was quickly into the swing of things on Friday and won both of their matches.

Gyster van Schalkwyk’s side made a positive start to their season, with a convincing 3-0 win over St John’s DSG in the third match of the day at the Marlé Claasen Astro.

That match was followed by a showdown between St Stithians College and Eunice High. The Bloemfontein lasses had ended 2023 ranked number one in the country, but Saints showed character and grit to get one over their highly regarded opponents.

Coach Lance Louw’s side entered the match as the underdogs, but they soon showed they were up for the challenge. At half-time, the teams were level at 1-1.

After the break, the Johannesburg side struck three times while conceding only once to claim a significant 4-2 victory. Later, though, they ran into an assured Oranje and were well beaten.

St Anne’s also got the ball rolling in the right direction with victories over Voortrekker and Beaulieu College respectively.

There was also a win for their fellow-KZN school, Epworth, who outplayed Graaff-Reinet’s Union High 3-0. Union also went down to Hoërskool Sasolberg, and they’ll be chasing their first goals of the season on Saturday after conceding five in their two games on Thursday.

At the New Horizon College Astro, Noordheuwel and St Dominic’s College were the teams on fire.

Norries claimed wins against the Epworth and Oranje second teams, while St Dominic’s made light work of Witteberg and Potchefstroom Volkskool.

Day two begins with a clash between Potchefstroom Volkskool, and Union High at 07:00, at Voortrekker, while the Oranje second stringers take on Wykeham at the New Horizon Astro.

Elma Carstens dien as spanbestuurder.

  • Eerste skote klap Saterdag by Steyners Sportdag

Eerste skote klap Saterdag by Steyners Sportdag
