  • Hansen and Garvs see Wynberg to stunning victory over Rondebosch

Wynberg Boys’ High delivered a masterclass on Saturday to topple their rivals and cricketing powerhouse, Rondebosch Boys’ High.

Captain Beni Hansen led from the front to give the visitors a platform from which to launch their attack. Hansen, also the SA Schools’ captain in 2023, delivered a much-need boost to the Wynberg innings after they had lost their openers early on.

It was, however, Xavier Garvs who caused the most problems for the ‘Bosch bowlers, picking them apart to add 112 runs to the Wynberg total.

Hlumelo Mgweba had some success for the home team, taking three wickets, including that of the Wynberg captain, but Garvs took the sting out of the attack, and the home side’s bowlers were unable to impose themselves, as they usually do.

Rondebosch were frustrated further at the end of the Wynberg innings as Luke Kleinsmith hung around for 71 deliveries and added 29 more runs to carry Wynberg to 252/8 as they saw out 70 overs.

Nathan Ball launched a counteroffensive for the hosts, but he could only watch on helplessly as the rest of the Rondebosch batting lineup crumbled in the face of the Wynberg onslaught.

Ball carved out 52 runs from 88 deliveries before Paul James sent him packing, which brought an end to the Rondebosch innings after James and his teammates had sliced through the home team’s batting.

Ebrahim Fakir spearheaded the Wynberg efforts, dismissing three batsmen for a mere 16 runs, which helped Wynberg end Rondebosch’s stuttering chase still 130 runs shy of their target.

The emphatic victory will be a massive boost of confidence for Wynberg ahead of a clash with the touring Wellington College (UK) team, which precedes a Saturday showdown with Affies on the Jacques Kallis Oval.

Rondebosch also faces the UK tourists during the week. They, then, turn down the intensity for an inter-house six-a-side tournament before the 1st XI faces a stiff examination from Affies on Sunday.

Hoërskool Durbanville also bested their local rivals, with Jan Kriel’s brisk 82 runs off 66 deliveries, and further useful contributions from Pierre du Toit (48) and Divan Bosman (42), taking them to a win over Curro Durbanville.

There was still a lot of work to do when Xander van Aarde (27*) stepped to the crease as the Durbies’ eighth batsman, though.

He showed his class, patiently knocking off the required runs before putting an exclamation point on his team’s victory with a six to seal it.

Meanwhile, Bishops Diocesan College and SACS ended all square after 120 overs of ferocious battle.

At the start, Litha Kraai wreaked havoc among the Bishops’ batsmen, taking three early wickets to rattle the visitors, who found themselves in trouble on 16/3.

Thaafier Japhta (40) did well to stabilise the Bishops’ innings and provide a platform for his side in the face of a relentless bowling attack. Then Sam Stavely-Alexander (43) and Waco Bassick (79) combined to drive their team into the ascendancy.

Nicholas Oscroft finally removed Stavely-Alexander, but Peyton Leigh, the next man in, continued to pile more pressure on the hosts with an undefeated 41 runs.

When SACS batted, Bassick and Leigh made further contributions, this time sharing six wickets between them, as SACS made it to 180, but the game had slowed to a crawl by then, with 55 overs bowled.

Though Bishops will be disappointed to have not added another victory to their record, their unbeaten streak in their 175th anniversary year continues.

They have two midweek matches against UK opposition on their schedule, taking on Charterhouse and Wellington College, before they visit Stellenbosch to face a wounded Paul Roos Gimnasium on Saturday.

Armand Kotze was HTS Middelburg se beste kolwer.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Middelburg: 242 (Shuan Taljaard 94, Zubair Desai 53; Vaughn Steynvaart 5/41, Gerrit Henken 2/9). Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg: 120 (Matthew Wentzel 43; Sibusiso Maduna 3/12, Eduan Strydom 3/17, Hendre Nel 2/18). Hoërskool Middelburg wen met 122 lopies.

HTS Middelburg: 143 (Armand Kotze 33, WJ Enslin 24; Topher Elphinstone 3/22, Xander Schoeman 3/32). Hoërskool Merensky: 144/5 (Rinaldo Bornman 46*, Luka Heinlein 37, JP Botha 22; Ethan Dreyer 2/46). Merensky wen met vyf paaltjies.

Uplands College: 163 (Jack Robson 51, Danny Snyman 27, Bruce Nel 23; Devandre Clarke 3/47, Jayden Smith 2/9, Nathan Visagie 2/16). Hoërskool Dinamika: 168/7 (Mohammed Valli 32, Nathan Visagie 30; Kai Naylor 3/43, Luke Johnston 2/19).

Kort daarna was Stefan Conradie weer betrokke toe hy vir Vivier kon uitvang.

    Beknopte telkaart:

Paarl Gimnasium: 203/9 (De Waal Vivier 87, Adrian Louw 68; Gunther Schmidt 2/23, Francois Prins 2/27, Stefan Conradie 2/71). Boland Landbou: 204/6 (Stefan Conradie 55, Kobus Conradie 36, Ekstras 30, Jan-Albert van Niekerk 24*, Rynhard van der Schyff 22, Lohann Louw 21; Zheemo Isaacs 1/21). Boland wen met vier paaltjies.

Hoërskool Brackenfell: 148 (Antonio Jasson 39, Jean Oosthuizen 27, Ekstras 20; Rossouw Matthee 3/20, Leolan Davids 2/23, Keahan Alexander 2/25). Charlie Hofmeyr: 149/7 (Luan Giliomee 81*; Jean Oosthuizen 3/23, JJ Mans 2/23). Charlie Hofmeyr wen met drie paaltjies.

  • Kliniese Coetzee verseker Hansies-sege

    Kliniese Coetzee verseker Hansies-sege

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hans Moore: 240/8 (Xavier Coetzee 84, Tihan Eloff 52, Aiden Shaw 22; Cameron Welsh 2/33). Eldoraigne: 227 (Cameron Welsh 86, MJ Buitendag 34, Jean du Toit 29, Marinus Langerman 28; Hanroux Siemens 4/43, Kenan Shaw 2/14). Hans Moore wen met 13 lopies.

Hoërskool Kemptonpark: 250/6 (Floors Mynhardt 95, Shuan Nash 29, Joshua Shanker 25, Stian de Villiers 22; Tommie Botha 2/29, Jahndre Coetzee 2/53). Potchefstroom Gimnasium: 162 (Tommie Botha 43, Juandre Barends 22, De Wet Grobler 20; Warren Pretorius 3/35, Marko van Voorst 2/15, Kaeden Pretorius 2/20). Kemptonpark wen met 88 lopies.

Hoërskool Montana: 109 (Du Preez Prinsloo 22, Woudter Kotze 20; André van Niekerk 5/11, Rieghardt Prinsloo 3/15). Hoërskool Monument: 111/3 (Rieghardt Prinsloo 37*, Joshua Mccoy 31; Konrad Koukeas 2/10). Monument wen met sewe paaltjies.

  • Klofies kraai koning

    Foto: Frans Lombard

Morné Prinsloo was die Woeries se keurbouler.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom: 126 (Berno de Klerk 46, Eduan van der Merwe 25; Ruan Ferreira 3/22, Wian Ruthven 2/6, Jacques van Niekerk 2/30). Hoërskool Waterkloof: 135/6 (Beukes van den Berg 49, Marcus Bakker 26, Riley Miller 24*; Berno de Klerk 2/33, Diaan van der Merwe 2/43). Waterkloof wen met vier paaltjies.

Hoërskool Nelspruit: 161 (John Duncan 35, Jayden Meyer 33, Theuns Meyer 25; Wian Ruthven 4/29, Jacques van Niekerk 3/23). Hoërskool Waterkloof: 165/2 (Wian Ruthven 68, Divan Behrens 66; Sarfaan Miller 1/24). Waterkloof wen met agt paaltjies.

Hoërskool Rustenburg: 224 (Logan Rossouw 59, Callie Fryer 37, Hendre Robbenson 33; Morné Prinsloo 3/22, Morné Venter 3/30). Hoërskool Centurion: 219 (Charl Prinsloo 65, Judah Phillips 27, Stefan de Villiers 23; Zandre Diedericks 4/44, Wessel Oosthuizen 2/44). Rustenburg wen met vyf lopies.

Hoërskool Nelspruit: 152 (Rico Nel 39, Vaughn van Zyl 34, Janco Breyl 28; Pierre de Villiers 3/41, Matt van der Westhuizen 3/9, Gerhard Engelbrecht 2/23). Hoërskool Menlopark: 156/2 (Dian van Zyl 80*, Ewald Meyer 48; Duan Smal 2/38). Menlopark wen met agt paaltjies.

  • De Villiers and Affies too good for Jeppe, KES sneaks past Pretoria Boys High

Divan de Villiers‘ excellent performances with bat and ball steered Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Jeppe High School for Boys on Saturday in Johannesburg.

De Villiers led the way with the ball, claiming his side’s best figures. In an astonishing spell, he sent four Jeppe batsmen back to the pavilion at a cost of only six runs.

Jorich van Schalkwyk also impressed, snaring 2/12, while further good support came from Petrus Rautenbach (2/28) and Armin Snyman (2/29).

Ryan Young showed his class at the top of the order for Jeppe, making a mature 51 from 83 deliveries, while Jeremiah Marshall contributed a gutsy 40 runs as the Joburg boys grinded their way to 142 all out.

When Affies replied, Jeppe’s South African u19 representative, Sipho Potsane, was the only bowler who looked threatening, claiming a solitary wicket while conceding 26 runs.

De Villiers then stamped his authority on the match even further, backing up his good bowling performance, with an unbeaten 56 from 65 balls. Vihan Pretorius continued his good form, with 36, while Janco Purchase‘s unbeaten 22 put the finishing touches on a comfortable win for the Pretoria side.

On the John Hurry Oval, King Edward VII School made life difficult for themselves, chasing 148 for victory over Pretoria Boys High.

Callum Ritchie led the KES efforts in the field, knocking over 4/28, while Christiaan Sabela (2/11) and Michael Holmes (2/27) shared four wickets as Boys High failed to get on top of the bowling.

Adam Cannata top scored with a fighting 42 from 68 deliveries, but he was the only batsman who looked comfortable at the crease. Grant Spencer provided a gritty 24, but the KES bowlers had Boys High’s number.

Nick Rossouw gave PBHS some hope of a valiant fightback when he took three early wickets, but Michael Holmes took charge of the KES innings, with his 45 giving it the momentum it needed.

Troy Gordon and Kwezi Nyamathe contributed of 29 runs apiece, which helped the home side over the line with three wickets to spare.

St John’s College welcomed St Alban’s to Mitchell Field, but they were ruthless in executing a big 113-run victory.

Joe MacRobert was the stand-out batsman for St John’s College, with the skipper striking 69 runs from 71 balls. The impressive Nkosana Sibiya (50, 68b) notched up another half-century, while Alec Loveland (49, 62b) missed out on his by just one run.

Oliver Tait was the pick of the St John’s bowlers, claiming three scalps for 23 runs. He found good support from Loveland, who backed up his fine performance with the bat with a return of 2/15. Malan du Plessis, who took the new ball, captured 2/23.

For St Alban’s, however, there wasn’t much to write home about as they struggled with both bat and ball.

Liam Basch was the Pretoria side’s mainstay with the ball picking up 2/39, while Matthew Ward, with 36, was the sole St Alban’s batsman to make it beyond 20 as the visitors stumbled to a disappointing 122/8 in their 50 overs.

    Summarised scorecards

    Beknopte telkaart:

Paul Roos Gimnasium: 120 (Beor van Reenen 25, Matthew Seymore 20; Marco Cato 3/23, Renaldo Windvogel 2/15, Christiaan Wege 2/19, Christian van Zuydam 2/36). Hoër Jongenskool Paarl: 125/4 (Johan Wege 43, JJ van der Sandt 38*, Christiaan Wege 22; Dian Winkel 2/27). Hoër Jongenskool Paarl wen met ses paaltjies.

  • Maritzburg College overcomes DHS, St Charles outlasts Northwood

On Goldstone’s, on Saturday, Maritzburg College convincingly avenged a loss to Durban High School on the Theobald Oval at the end of last year, by securing a seven-wicket win in a limited overs clash.

College captain Chad Mason chose to field first on a cloudy day, but there was no quick reward for the home side. DHS openers, Omar Ismaeel and Sibusiso Msibi, grafted hard for an opening stand of 63 before Msibi fell for 26 at the end of the 17th over. Omar followed only three runs later for 21.

Semal Pillay, in at four, batted well, but all around him his fellow batsmen struggled to find traction.

Sphamandla Dzanibe starred for College, removing the first three men in the order, while the fourth, Pillay, was run out by Dzanibe, the last wicket to go down, for 49 from 76 deliveries. DHS had posted 173 all out.

The visitors had made a good start to their innings, but the hosts made an even better start as Llewelyn Sutherland and Ryan McKean produced an opening partnership of 82 before McKean was caught by Bhavesh Naicker off the bowling of Pillay for 27.

College skipper Mason joined Sutherland in the middle, and they added 55 before Mason was out for 21. Michael Gibson replaced him and did a good of moving the score along.

With College only two runs short of victory, Sutherland was dismissed, run out by a combination of Jared Havermann and Josh van Biljon for a solid innings of 82 from 103 balls, which featured eight fours. He was out, but he had done his job.

Five runs later and coach Robbie Coutts‘ charges had claimed the win with 41 balls to spare. Gibson was undefeated on 26 from 36, with three fours.

On a challenging day for the DHS bowlers, Dalan Naraidu stood out with a return of 1/27 from 10 overs. Jared Havermann was also tidy, surrendering only 28 from 10, but without a reward.

Also in Pietermaritzburg, the home side, St Charles College, elected to bat on The Oval, up against Northwood School in another limited overs match. With three of the top four batsmen making telling contributions, Saints were able to post a challenging total.

The in-form Cian Fortmann took charge early on, cracking nine fours in a knock of 53 from 51 balls before he was caught and bowled by Chad Leclezio with the total on 70.

His opening partner Thando Zama played a watchful innings, facing 102 balls before he was out for 40. Two runs later, Kwanele Nqayi followed as the hosts slipped to 140/4 in the 40th over.

Rico Honiball had played himself in, however, and he helped lift the St Charles’ total to 185 before departing for the innings’ top score of 55 from 85 deliveries, which included four fours and a six.

A couple of cameos, then, saw Saints to 218/8 from their 50 overs.

Mason Storm knocked over 2/33 in eight for the Knights, while Harlee Jagga tied down the home team, with his miserly 10-over spell returning figures of 1/17. Ben Cilliers did a good job, too, picking up 1/22 in seven.

Needing 219 to win, Northwood found themselves in early trouble, with both openers sent packing cheaply, leaving the visitors on 7/2 in the third over.

Thayin Kuppan and Kyle White then stabilised the innings, sharing a 58-run partnership before Kuppan fell victim to a run out after scoring 38 runs from 59 deliveries.

White followed nine runs later, LBW to Stefan Veldsman, who had engineered the Kuppan run out, for 21.

Harlee Jagga hit three fours and made 20 in a 31-ball stay, while Mfana Shange contributed 21 in 51.

The top score of the innings, however, belonged to Mason Storm, who got after the Saints’ bowling. In just 48 balls, he smashed a six and five fours, and scored 54.

Storm staged a valiant attempt to see the Knights to victory, but he was eventually the last wicket to fall in the 46th over as Northwood finished on 184 all out. Victory to St Charles College by 34 runs.

Cian Fortmann, after a fifty at the top of the order for Saints, destroyed the lower order of the visitors to capture 4/33 from 9.4 overs.

    Summarised scores

Durban High School 173/10 (Semal Pillay 49, Sibusiso Msibi 26, Omar Ismaeel 21; Sphamandla Dzanibe 4/19); Maritzburg College 176/3 (Llewelyn Sutherland 82, Ryan McKean 27, Michael Gibson 26*, Chad Mason 21; Dalan Naraidu 1/27, Semal Pillay 1/30) Maritzburg College won by 7 wickets.

  • HTS Drostdy claim Dawie de Lange Trophy for a second time

HTS Drostdy 1st XI, 2024 (Photo provided)

The bragging rights in Worcester belong to HTS Drostdy and the coveted De Lange Trophy will take the name of their beloved former vice-principal for the next year after Jacques Jordaan and co muscled their way to a home victory.

Jordaan, one of four HTS Drostdy players to have taken part in every iteration of the contest since its inception in 2022, led the charge with an innings of 69 runs off of 96 deliveries to set his side on course for a solid total.

Along with Gerhard le Roux, Ruvan Barnard and Darius Venter, he gets his hands on the Dawie de Lange Trophy for a second time to break open a one-one tie with Drostdy’s rivals, Worcester Gimnasium, who were victorious last year.

Brevin Maree and Therenzo Jacobs did well to put pressure on the Drostdy batsmen initially, but Jordaan settled in and found his rhythm to help drive his side to 225 runs. He was supported well by Barnard (23) and Bryan Cochrane (35) before Rijan Visser (3/46) took care of the middle order.

Cochrane then drew early blood for the hosts. Despite a well-played 44 runs from Caleb de Lange, the Gimmie batting lineup struggled to put any big partnerships together as the Donkeys’ bowlers kept chipping away.

Visser, batting at seven provided stubborn resistance, seeing out 63 deliveries and striking four fours in an unbeaten innings of 28, but Cochrane and the rest of the Drostdy bowlers snuffed out Worcester Gimnasium’s hopes of a successful run chase by bowling out the visiting team for 152 in the 44th over.

With the victory, the coveted De Lange Trophy stays true to its history of favouring the home team. Next year, the Gimmies will, once again, look to turn the tide when they get to play in their own backyard.

HTS Drostdy, on the other hand, will be itching for an opportunity to defend the title and to begin building a lead in the revitalised rivalry between the two schools.

    Summarised Scorecard

HTS Drostdy 225 (Jacques Jordaan 69, Extras 37, Bryan Cochrane 35, Ruvan Barnard 23; Brevin Maree 3/27, Rijan Visser 3/46); Worcester Gimnasium 152 (Caleb de Lange 44, Extras 27, Rijan Visser 28*; Bryan Cochrane 2/16, Reghardt du Plessis 2/26, Helgardt Nortjé 2/29). HTS Drostdy won by 73 runs.

There were ebbs and flows to the battle, with the hosts dominating on day one before a solid batting shift by Grey High on Saturday had the hosts labouring in the field.

On Friday, Darion Rabie snared five Grey High batsmen as the visitors stumbled to 142 all out in their first innings.

After Kamo Mokoena made the initial breakthrough to remove the Grey High opening duo, Rabie made short work of the rest of their lineup to put the Bloemfontein boys in the ascendency.

They backed up their early dominance when Ruben Maree scored a massive 137 runs off of 147 balls to blast them 135 runs clear of Grey High’s first innings score.

Henru de Wet played a fine supporting role, contributing a further 58 runs, as he and Maree constructed a 169-run partnership to pile the pressure on the touring side.

Grey High, however, showed they are a quality outfit by regrouping to turn the tables on their rivals in their second innings.

Centuries by Kian Cambier (119) and Xander Elkington (101*) powered the visiting team to a massive 341/5 by the time play came to an end.

Rabie added another three wickets to his record, but the Elkington and Cambier partnership swelled to 185 runs before Henru de Wet removed Cambier.

Next weekend, Grey High welcomes an in-form Boland Landbou to Gqeberha for another two-day contest, while Grey College sets off on a tour of the Western Cape on Wednesday.

    Summarised Scorecard

Grey High first innings 142 (Teun Kloppenberg 33, Marco Giaconi 24; Darion Rabie 5/51, Kamo Mokoena 2/15); Grey College first innings 277/9 d (Ruben Maree 137, Henru de Wet 58, Daniel Hattingh 28, Christiaan Kind 28; Nathan Howell 3/28, Zander Nutt 3/62); Grey High second innings 341/5 (Kian Cambier 119, Xander Elkington 101*, Marco Giaconi 25, Dylan Garrod 24*, Luke Tait 23, Teun Kloppenberg 20; Darion Rabie 3/68).
