St Charles College may have felt reasonably happy with their total of 135/7 when they met Durban High School (DHS) in the One Insurance T20 Night League, at Eston, on Thursday. It turns out, that was nowhere near enough.

In just 15.5 overs, DHS powered their way to a 10-wicket victory, with Ethan Cooper smashing 80 off 50 balls, including five fours and three sixes, while Ismaeel Omar played the anchor role, contributing 43 off 46 deliveries, with four fours.

Saints, the winners of the competition the previous three years, started their innings well, too, with Thandolwethu Zama and captain Rico Honiball putting up 54 for the first wicket in 7.2 overs before Zama was dismissed for 27 from 22, with four fours.

Honiball went on to top-score, making 48 from 45, also with four fours, and André Bosman weighed in with 20 from 13 before he was run out, but it turned out the Pietermaritzburg school needed another innings of greater substance, something similar to what their skipper delivered.

Lazlo Jooste, with 2/12 from two overs, and Suliman Jadwat, with 2/30 from four, put the brakes under the St Charles batting effort.

It has been an intriguing start to the Eston Night League. In the competition’s opening match, on 18 August, Westville Boys’ High, as expected, beat the Tuskers Hub XI, getting home by eight wickets after the Tuskers posted 83/5.

Kyle McGough provided the highlight of the game, cracking an unbeaten 58 from 32 deliveries, with six fours and two sixes.

Michaelhouse, then, ran rampant against Glenwood, led by a thrilling 118 from 59 balls – that’s two runs a ball – from opener, Ethan Muir, who struck 14 fours and five sixes. Fellow opener Cody Sander contributed 52 as the duo shared a ripping partnership of 146 in 14.4 overs. That helped ‘House to 214/2.

Glenwood, under heavy pressure, stumbled to 67 all out in reply. Radhesh Jhilmeet led the Michaelhouse attack, capturing 3/11 in two overs, and opening bowler Thandanani Zuma picked up 2/12 in 2.5 as Glenwood’s run chase never got going.

Hilton College took on Maritzburg College the next day, 20 August, and scored a six-wicket win with eight balls to spare.

Batting first, College tallied 123/7, with Joseph Currie‘s 30 not out at a run a ball their best effort. Luke Campbell was the pick of the Hilton bowlers, snaring 2/10 in four.

Hilton replied with 124/4 in 18.4 overs, and they had Ben Hockly to thank for guiding them to victory, He scored all but 40 of their runs, making 84 not out from 60 balls, 11 of which he sent into the boundary.

Nathan Pembridge did his best to undermine the Hilton response, snapping up 2/15 in four overs.

  • Rondebosch Boys’ High out for vengeance against Wynberg

Wynberg Boys’ High host Rondebosch Boys’ High at 12:30 on Hawthornden Field this Saturday.

Thanks to a 26-all draw against Diocesan College on the Piley Rees last weekend, the hosts will look to take their frustration out on their other Southern Suburbs visitors.

On the same day, Tinkie Heyns Field saw a 23-20 victory for the hosts, Rondebosch. They put up a valiant defending display to prevent SACS from getting the lead in the final few minutes of the match.

Last time these two sides played back in June, Wynberg won 38-33. Their SA U18 scrumhalf, Morné Noble, scored a brilliant 50 metre sprint to secure his team the victory. He’s one to keep an eye on.

Rondebosch back three members, Caleb Bell and David Kadima, will look to burn rubber out wide. They’re prolific try scorers with incredible agility and pace. Returning from SA U18 duty, their captain and flanker, Josh Neill, will be a dangerous threat through the middle. He loves to pick and go.

Wynberg tighthead prop, Luqobo Makwedini, will be a threat in the scrums. Tackling him is like trying stop an 120kg cannonball. Captain and lock, Jaythen Orange, is competitive in the lineout and breakdowns. In 80 minutes he travels as much distance as the ball does.

Flyhalf, Achmat Behardien, will be the backline conductor. His passing and kicking skills allow for him to be a highly versatile playmaker.

With so much talent on display, one can expect part two of this tie to be equally as thrilling as the first. Will Rondebosch quench their thirst for revenge this Saturday?

    The teams:

Wynberg vs Rondebosch at 12:30 on Hawthornden Field this Saturday.

Wynberg Boys’ High: 15 Daniel Oud, 14 Chad Campbell, 13 Kunene Gadu, 12 Yaqeen Ahmed, 11 Albert Lourens, 10 Achmat Behardien, 9 Morné Noble, 8 Alvin Machinja, 7 Tjeripo Karuhumba, 6 CJ Kotze, 5 James Orwin, 4 Jaythen Orange (captain), 3 Luqobo Makwedini, 2 Noah Gila, 1 Luke Miller.

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 Caleb Bell, 14 Caleb Jeneker, 13 Matthew Galpin, 12 Harry Soboil, 11 David Kadima, 10 Eathon Williams, 9 James Kirsten, 8 Alutha Wesi, 7 Josh Neill (captain), 6 Linakho Mehlomakulu, 5 Bertus Versfeld, 4 Connor Arbuthnot, 3 Matthew van der Merwe, 2 Ismaeel Conrad, 1 Damian Spence.

The celebration of Women’s Month by the Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) is gradually coming to a close – however, one thing is certain, the action across various fields in the Gauteng province are not diminishing.

In fact, the intensity of the action is escalating significantly, with the league’s standings at both the top and bottom beginning to take form.

Mamelodi Sundowns, who have maintained the lead for the majority of this season, are currently at the forefront with 55 points. In contrast, their rivals, SAFA Academy, are trailing by four points, occupying the second position on the table with 51 points.

Both teams have proudly represented their colours, showcasing the excitement and prestige of women’s development in the u17 GWDL division of the league.

Earlier in the season, SAFA Academy demonstrated their strength by defeating the outstanding Brazilians in the first round of the league division. However, Banyana Ba Style, captained by the exceptional midfielder Zinhle Mkhize, sought retribution earlier this month, securing a 1-0 victory over SAFA Academy during the Women’s Day Festival, which was hosted by Refilwe FC at Curro Hazeldean in Pretoria.

This Sunday, at the University of Pretoria Football Fields located in the Hillcrest Campus, the SAFA Academy will face the Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA). This match is expected to be challenging for both teams, as SAFA Academy aims to narrow the gap with Sundowns at the top of the standings, while RESA, who have had a strong season but faced some disappointing moments, seeks to secure a third position, contingent on Highlands Park dropping points or losing their match against JVW FC at Balfour Park on Sunday.

In anticipation of the intense action in Sunday’s GWDL games, SuperSport Schools Plus engaged in a brief discussion with RESA’s coach, Simeon Lekhooana, also known as Coach Solly. Coach Solly informed SuperSport Schools Plus that his team is well-prepared, despite having promoted key players to their Sasol League team, as they aim to enhance positive outcomes in both the GWDL and the Sasol League.

Coach Lekhooana stated that promoting key players to the Sasol League could have a beneficial effect on the u17 GWDL team by providing younger players with opportunities to advance and acquire experience.

Players such as Lesedi Motaung, aged 17, Thuto Rathebe, aged 15, Nthabeleng Molefi, aged 14, Mpumelelo Chabalala, aged 14, and Buhle Mthembu, aged 14, are among those who have been elevated from the RESA development divisions to the Sasol team.

They will be given the opportunity to compete for a place in the first team at a younger age, as RESA is scheduled to face Wits Ladies this coming Saturday in a Sasol league match.

In the GWDL match against SAFA Academy this Sunday, he stated that they are aware of the threat posed by their upcoming opponent. “We must manage the pressure and a formidable attacking force.

Teams like SAFA Academy have concentrated on achieving victories, but we will continue to emphasise the significance of developing players technically, physically, and psychologically to handle every football match, even when it is not against SAFA Academy, while maintaining focus on each game,” he elaborated.

RESA has been one of the teams that have maintained, or rather endeavoured to uphold, a high standard in the GWDL by being a strong force and not an easy team to defeat. Lekhooana informed SuperSport Schools Plus that sustaining a standard for the team is essential for ensuring consistency and motivating the team to keep improving. A robust team culture and well-defined goals can facilitate this.

“All I can say is that we will go strong and focused to that game knowing that SAFA Academy has been doing well on their previous games,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

He said that the main focus is to take one game at the time and bring positive results.

Other fixtures that are notably significant this weekend include the log leaders, Sundowns, who will make their way to Dan Kutumela School to confront a struggling Dinoko Rondebult, currently positioned 14th in the standings. After 19 matches, Dinoko FC has achieved only 3 victories and 3 draws, while suffering 13 losses.

On Sunday, they will face a challenging match against coach Rhoda Mulaudzi’s team, which has been demonstrating potential to secure the GWDL title by the end of the season.

Meanwhile, at home, the University of Pretoria (Tuks) will host the visiting team from Roodepoort, Panorama FC. Tuks enters the match with a favourable advantage, as they occupy the seventh position, while Panorama is in 10th place.

Nevertheless, both teams are aware of the competitive nature and strong organisation they possess across all areas of the field, making it a challenging encounter. This match will showcase the strategic coordination of both coaches and a tactical battle between the teams.

Refilwe FC, who may have taken the league by storm with their remarkable performances this year, following a disappointing and educational curve in the previous and maiden season in 2024, will take on Tornado FC at Scelo Stadium on Sunday. Refilwe FC, which recently hosted one of the most significant events on the GWDL calendar, the Women’s Day Festival, has found itself amidst the giants this season, currently occupying the fifth position behind Highlands Park, SAFA Academy, and Mamelodi Sundowns.

In other matches, Edenvale FC will make their way to Tembisa to be hosted by Kenneth FC at Esiqongweni Sports Ground, while Hellenic Falcons FC will take on Kempton Park FC at Laerskool Meyers on Sunday.

  • SACS aim to defeat an improving Bishops

SACS aim to defeat an improving Bishops

SACS will look to test the Bishops defence with their elusive passing. Photo: mbl_photography4 on Instagram.

SACS hosted Rondebosch Boys’ High last weekend. The Southern Suburbs visitors delivered a strong performance to defeat the hosts 23-20.

This Saturday provides a second chance for them to host and defeat their other Southern Suburbs counterparts, Diocesan College. The Memorial A Field fixture is set to kickoff at 12:30.

Bishops managed a 26-all draw against a visiting Wynberg last Saturday. Funny enough, they drew 14 all with SACS when they played them on the Piley Rees in May. Should one predict a draw for this upcoming encounter?

Bishops’ hooker and captain, Daniel van den Heever, has delivered some excellent performances in recent weeks. He scored a hat-trick at Milnerton, and a brace against Wynberg last week. As he has grown, so has his side. He’ll be difficult to stop off the back of lineout mauls and in the carries.

The visitors will be looking for more than a draw on this occasion. Photo: Diocesan College ZA on Instagram.

The Newlands outfit has a formidable captain and hooker of its own. Sango Zangqa threw in and finished a 22 metre lineout maul in the dying minutes against Rondebosch last Saturday. The hooker is influential in the set-pieces, scrumming and driving with great strength.

The contest between the two captains will be an interesting match-up to enjoy. Both sides also enjoy playing out wide. Supporters can look forward to Bishop’s skilful flyhalf, Christian Toweel, and SACS’s try-scoring centre, Mikey Skeeles.

They are lethal threats when on the attack.

It can be difficult to choose a winner in an evenly matched fixture. SACS might be slight favourites simply because they have the home ground advantage.

    The teams:

SACS: 15 Quewinn Lackay, 14 Josh Gorgens, 13 Imtiaz Abrahams, 12 Mikey Skeeles, 11 Josh Pfister, 10 Nathan Potgieter, 9 Matt Forbes, 8 Thando Sithole, 7 Harrison Bell, 6 Siphe Mbungendlu, 5 RJ Cunningham, 4 Reuben De Klerk, 3 Qiraan Hermans, 2 Sango Zangqa (captain), 1 Qawe Sawuka.

Diocesan College: 15 Rynard Gordon, 14 Singa Mayoyo, 13 Ben Koenig, 12 Cole Robyntjies, 11 Noah Edmunds, 10 Christian Toweel, 9 Max Marr, 8 Jack Venter, 7 Yazeed Salaam, 6 Ethan Venter, 5 Fouke Wagener, 4 Rieko Kidha, 3 Chris du Toit, 2 Daniel van den Heever (captain), 1 Will Reid.

  • The Charlies to host the Robbies for King Price Derby Series fixture

The Charlies to host the Robbies for King Price Derby Series fixture

Charlie Hofmeyr take on Hoërskool Robertson at 14:00 this Saturday. The Ceres hosts go into this fixture with confidence, as they fought their way to a well earned 20-19 victory over Montagu last weekend. Robertson also enjoyed a recent victory, defeating Langenhoven Gimnasium 53-28 two Saturdays ago.

Since 2002, the Charlies have won this Interschools fixture 13 times, with 2 draws and six Robertson wins. Since 2017, the Charlies have remained undefeated in this fixture. Last year they won the tie 29-8.

In recent games, Charlies fullback, Shandley Burrouws, has looked good with ball in hand. Last week, he sliced through the opposition defensive line on multiple occasions, earning himself a try. He was unlucky to have only scored once. If he continues playing with such confidence, there’s a good chance he might score two or three this Saturday.

Hofmeyr captain and eighthman, Gerhard Goosen, is also a player to watch. His enduring work rate at the breakdown sets the example for his fellow loose forwards. His strong ball carrying often goes well beyond the gain line, and sometimes over the try-line as well.

Robbies captain and lock, Mychal Swart, will need help from his forward pack in deconstructing the host’s cohesive set-piece. Montagu looked good on attack against the Charlies last weekend, but simply did not get enough of the ball to outscore the Ceres locals.

Then again, the Charlies backline needs to prepare for a side that scored 53 points less than two weeks ago. Robbies centres, Juwaydan van Niekerk and Alexander Stemmet, know how to weave their way between opposition defenders.

One can expect a free flowing game filled with creative rugby, when these two rivals do battle in Ceres this weekend.

    The teams:

Charlie Hofmeyr vs Hoërskool Robertson at 14:00 in Ceres on Saturday:

Charlie Hofmeyr: 15 Shandley Burrows, 14 Keenan Nathan, 13 Willmuth Loff, 12 Keagan Kelly, 11 Ainsley Pedro, 10 Jay-Jay Janse, 9 Phillip Boshoff, 8 Gerhard Goosen (captain), 7 Ivan Hanekom, 6 Attie Heyns, 5 Jacob Kriel, 4 Jean Neethling, 3 Joshua Swarts, 2 Lourens Nel, 1 Dewald Jaars.

Robertson: 15 Brayden Joseph, 14 Haygen Persent, 13 Alexander Stemmet, 12 Juwaydan van Niekerk, 11 Tyron April, 10 Jaydan van Niekerk, 9 Dihego Braaf, 8 Victor Readien, 7 Uyanda “Siya” Nkumbi, 6 Ivor Thompson, 5 Dirkie Human, 4 Mychal Swart (captain), 3 Herman Theron, 2 Jaydrian van Staden, 1 Kallie Joubert.

  • Queen’s eye memorable finish, Dale aim for redemption in King Price Derby Series battle

Queen’s eye memorable finish, Dale aim for redemption in King Price Derby Series battle

Eastern Cape’s top guns Queen’s College are primed for a sizzling finish to their season when they take on fierce Qonce rivals Dale College at the Rec field in Komani on Friday (15:30).

Despite contrasting records this season, the two sides are on a serious collision course in a Border derby which has captured the imagination down the years, with no quarter asked for or given.

The Dalians come into the match on the back of two close defeats against Graeme College and Hudson Park in the sort of performances which mirrored their 2025 programme.

They have seldom been bullied off the field, yet when it has come to the crunch, they have just been unable to get over the line, creating a sense of frustration they will be fired up to erase in Komani.

Under captain Kamva Sithole, Dale showed what they can do with a 19-15 win over Selborne recently, and that’s the sort of sign of which Queen’s coaches Clinton Loest and Tyrone Rankin will be only too well aware.

Despite losses to Pearson and Graeme among their Eastern Cape opponents, Queen’s have set the standard with a series of outstanding wins this season.

In contrast to Dale, they have been able to find a way to win the crucial moments in many of their matches, leading to a record which has been the envy of many.

But all that will fade into nothing when the teams run out on Friday afternoon, when the only objective will be to put some sort of gloss on the 2025 season.

For Queen’s, it would be the culmination of a memorable year, while for the Dalians it would give hope for the future and a sense of satisfaction that they remain a competitive unit.

Their previous encounter – 15-13 to Queen’s – says it all in terms how close these matches can be and of the pride these teams show when they square up in the sporting arena.

In East London, Hudson Park will also be looking for a stirring finish to their season as they entertain Cambridge at 13.40.

The home team will be the heavy favourites and will want to make it a reunion weekend to remember, but Cambridge will scrap every inch of the way as they look to rain on Hudson’s
    parade.

The remaining game on the programme sees Port Rex at home to Kariega outfit Bergsig.

    The squads are:

Queen’s College: 15 Mveli Mqulo, 14 Ayathanda Mtyando, 16 Thina Fenako, 12 Sbabalwe Magwebu, 11 Ncutu Kepe, 10 Inganathi Mnunu, 9 Ayola Somhlahlo, 8 Acwenga Saul, 7 Sivuyise Mnyimba, 6 Jeffrey Niland (captain), 5 Sambesiwe Vetman, 4 Zeacke Mata, 3 Ahlume Gqetywa, 2 Bulumko Manqina, 1 Amyoli Ngxongwana.

Dale College: 15 Milani Madide, 14 Yamkele Molose, 13 Phikolomzi Mtyalela, 12 Nxande Ngcaba, 11 Mahle Mehlomane, 10 Soso Dyani, 9 Wethumtha Malawana, 8 Kamva Sithole (captain), 7 Liyabona Mayikana, 6 Linamandla Peter, 5 Kungawo Jaca, 4 Ebenezer Sarpong, 3 Sanele Bistoli, 2 Lakhanya Mbewu, 1 Azole Sodlaka.

Hudson Park: 15 Mahle Zinto, 14 Bahlumile Mavuso, 13 Ukhona Kama, 12 Lunathi Dolo, 11 Masibulele Kwakwini, 10 Likho Gidi, 9 Landile Gidi, 8 Sibabalwe Mtshini, 7 Likhanye Mandila, 6 Phindokuhle Mdlalana, 5 Hlumelo Gobile, 4 Tenda Saunyama, 3 Tyrique Peters, 2 Kwakokuhle Pasha, 1 Manyano Mpundu.

Hoërskool Zwartkop se eerste span beleef vanjaar ‘n droomseisoen.

Hoërskool Middelburg (moontlik): 15 Buhle Mphahlaza, 14 Kefilwe Phamotse, 13 Jaco Truter, 12 Lungelo Maseko, 11 Lesego Karale, 10 Matthew Abbey, 9 Keabetswe Nkgadima, 8 Hencoe Janse van Rensburg, 7 Jabu Mathebula, 6 CW Hanekom, 5 Jeandré Potgieter, 4 André Robberts, 3 Dewald du Toit, 2 Roux Grobler, 1 Carlo Joubert.
