  • Northerns maak in langverwagte verskyning in Wildeklawer-toernooi

Northerns maak in langverwagte verskyning in Wildeklawer-toernooi

    Dag 1: A-veld: 07:50 – EG Jansen t. Noord-Kaap; 09:00 – Glenwood t. Boland Landbou; 10:10 – HTS Drostdy t. Monument; 11:20 – Grey-kollege t. Oakdale Landbou; 12:30 – Diamantveld t. Grey Boys’ High School; 13:40 – Paarl-Gimnasium t. Wildeklawer XV; 14:50 – Maritzburg-kollege t. Paul Roos-Gimnasium; 16:00 – Outeniqua t. Waterkloof. B-veld: 10:10 – Affies t. Framesby; 11:20 – Hoër Jongenskool Paarl t. Sharks XV.

    Dag 2: A-veld: 07:50 – Oakdale Landbou t. Sharks XV; 09:00 – Waterkloof t. Paarl- Gimnasium; 10:10 – Diamantveld t. EG Jansen; 11:20 – Glenwood t. Grey Boys’ High School; 11:20 – HTS Drostdy t. Wildeklawer XV.

  • SA U20’s score convincing win in tour opener

Down 0-3 at halftime in difficult and wet conditions, the South Africa U20 training squad delivered an inspired second half performance, which resulted in four tries, to win their opening tour match 26-3 against an Argentine U20 XV on Saturday evening (SA time) in Corrientes.
The South Africans, in Argentina as part of their preparations for the forthcoming Junior World Championship in France, initially struggled to master the wet conditions.
The squad lost their regular captain Marvin Orie (lock, broken leg) on the eve of their departure to South America and found the going tough in the first half when they also played against a strong wind. However, they did well to restrict their opponents to a slender 3-0 lead at the interval.
A tactical change in the second half yielded far better scoring opportunities for the visitors, who eventually scored four times through Ruan Steenkamp (2), squad newcomer Aidon Davis (no 8) and flyhalf Robert du Preez (no 10). Replacement fullback Jacques Rossouw also landed two penalties.
Afterwards SA U20 coach, Dawie Theron, was understandably happy with the successful turnaround in the second half.
“We maybe tried to do too much in the first half, and that, plus the rain and soft underfoot conditions made it difficult for our guys to get going. With the wind in our favour at the turn we played a more forward-orientated game, driving the ball up and taking it through a couple of phases before sending it out wide,” explained Theron who also said he was also pleased with their kicking after the break.
He added he was pleased with the squad’s mental toughness, which served them well after a long trip from South Africa.
“The trip was long and when we arrived here we could only managed to fit in one training session, plus the weather was not good at all. We also had a few different combinations and the lineout jumpers had to adjust their calls because of the absence of Marvin, who was really good at managing our calls.
“Overall, I am very pleased with the end result and I am sure the boys would have learnt a lot. I though Aidon Davis (EP Kings), who last year played for the SA Schools against England and France, did well in his first outing for us. Jannie Stander (MTN Golden Lions, lock) also performed admirably in place of Marvin,” added Theron.
The second tour match is on Tuesday at 23h00 SA time against Argentina U20 at the same venue, with the final series match taking place next Saturday in Buenos Aires.
    The point scorers:
Argentina U20 XV: Penalty: Augistin Carletto
SA U20 Training Squad: Tries: Ruan Steenkamp (2), Aidon Davis, Robert du Preez. Penalties: Jacques Rossouw (2).

Griffon-liga se titel as kampioen wees.

    Puntemakers:

AHS Kroonstad 45 (28) – Drieë: Nico Potgieter (2), Stefan Oelofse, Stephen O’Donovan, Robbie Petzer, Jeandré Uys, JP le Roux. Doelskoppe: Uys (5). HTS Welkom 13 (6) – Drie: Innocent Vala-shiya. Doelskop: Teboho Lesholi. Strafdoele: Lesholi (2).

  • Louis Botha troef Sannies

    Louis Botha troef Sannies

    Puntemakers:

Louis Botha 56 (32) – Drieë: Sheldon Fortuin (2), Luke Cyster (2), Patrick Mbangi (2), Sydwill Mayika, Whaseem Gallant, Sharwin Cupido, Ox Nche. Doelskoppe: Cupido (3). Sand du Plessis 6 (0) – Strafdoele: JB la Cock (2).

St. Andrew 18 (18) – Drieë: Sinclair Marais, Marc Brown. Doelskop: Dean Tucker. Strafdoele: Tucker (2). Brandfort 5 (0) – Drie: Vlam Groenewald.

President Steyn 55 (22) – Drieë: Janus Sander (2), Chester Sejake, Eugene Strydom, Juan Grobbelaar, Lee-hane Ontong, Junior Aggenbach, Danie Truter, Jean Janse van Rensburg. Doelskoppe: Sander (5).

    Puntemakers:

Grey-kollege 62 (22) – Drieë: Theo Ferreira (2), Andrew du Plessis (2), Julian Jordaan (2), EW Viljoen, Luan Reynders, Dylan Harlen, Charl Pretorius. Doelskoppe: Stephen Rautenbach (5), Viljoen. Jim Fouché 10 (3) – Drie: Franco Spies. Doelskop: Ruan Wasserman. Strafdoel: Spies.
Cherries 52 (31) – Drieë: Alex Jonker (3), Neil Stannard (2), Johann du Toit, Jacques du Preez, Dwayne Wessels. Doelskoppe: Henry Immelman (3), André Swarts (3). Fichardtpark 0.

  • Grey PE on top against Nico Malan

Our first fixture of the regular season took place against Nico Malan in Humansdorp on Saturday. Our opponents were confident after a string of good results against some of their more fancied opponents at the Easter Festivals they attended – and an early score by their fullback after poor ball retention on our part sent their crowd into delirium. The conversion was good and the score 0 points to 7. The next 20 minutes were scrappy, as we struggled for cohesion. Thankfully we managed to get our act together and stand in captain Martin Groenewald capped off a good passage of play with a belligerent run to score our first try and level the scores at 7 a piece.
Moments later Nico Malan kicked a penalty to the corner. The ball was spread wide and the highly rated Selwyn Davids beat our defense to reclaim his deft grubber kick and score their second try. That proved to the be the final action of the first half which ended 7 to 12.
We seemed a different team after the break and began to carry the ball with a greater sense of determination and urgency, which soon brought dividends in the form of a penalty goal after a period of sustained pressure in their half of the field.
Again a lapse in concentration on defense allowed Davids to ghost through and score their third try, which was unconverted. Our newfound brutal effiency while carrying the ball and accuracy at the break down began to tell as Keanu Vers rounded off another period of dominance by our pack with a fine try as we narrowed the gap to only two points, trailing by 15 points to 17. This period of possession and territorial dominance broke our opponent’s spirits and we began to run riot – Dylan Vermaak scoring two tries in quick succession as we first gained and then stretched our lead to 29 points to 17, with 15 or so minutes remaining. A long break for an injury to one of Nico Malan’s outside backs gave them time to regroup and the last ten minutes saw Nico Malan score from fairly long range after a fortuitous turnover at a breakdown. The conversion was good and our lead was reduced to 5 points with 4 minutes on the clock. Nico Malan maintained possession from the kick off and it went wide – only for their wing to hack in downfield. Keanu Vers won the subsequent scramble for possession to dot down. We squandered possession from the restart and a few minutes of panicky defense began before our opponents coughed the ball up. The final whistle brought the curtain down on a fine advert for school’s rugby, on a day our superior conditioning and desire to win held sway over a plucky and pugnacious Nico Malan XV.

  • SA U20’s make wholesale changes for second tour match

SA U20’s make wholesale changes for second tour match

The SA Under-20 training squad to face Argentina Under-20 in their second tour match on Tuesday, 16 April show thirteen changes from the starting fifteen that won their tour opener 26-3 on Saturday evening in Corrientes.

Tomorrow’s rugby match will kick-off at 23h00 SA time and will also be played in Corrientes. The South African youngsters are in Argentina as part of their final preparations for the forthcoming Junior World Championship (JWC) in France.

Justin Geduld (inside centre) and Dennis Visser (No 5 lock) are the only two players in the team that also started on Saturday.

The speedy Seabelo Senatla, a Springbok Sevens team mate of Geduld, will run out at left wing while 2012 JWC winner Handrè Pollard was selected in the flyhalf position. Pollard is also understudy to Ruan Steenkamp who will captain the team from the side of the scrum.

Steenkamp scored two tries on Saturday in the heavy and wet conditions of Corrientes.

Jannie Stander (lock), Robert du Preez (flyhalf) and Sylvian Mahuza (fullback) were included on the bench after starting on Saturday. The last clash of the three-match tour will be played this coming Saturday in Buenos Aires.

SA U20 coach, Dawie Theron, attributed the many changes to their rotation policy. “We want to give every squad member a chance to play on tour. I am pleased with the overall result of our first game, but we know that the Pumas will come with an even bigger onslaught on Tuesday,” explained Theron.

He cautioned his team will not be able to afford another slow start again their hosts. “They will make it extremely difficult for us again right from the start so we will have to concentrate and get into our stride from early on.”

  • Stapelberg on form for Framesby

Ernst Stapelberg is going to give his opponents a very hard time this season on the schools rugby fields in the province.

The fly half was in top form on Saturday for Framesby in the victory of 42-8 (21-3 half time) over Despatch. Stapelberg (captain) gave a polished display op his home ground and that trademark long raking line kicks had Despatch in sixes and sevens. His place kicking was a joy to watch as he converted all 6 tries.

Wihan Coetzer (lock), who was a power of strength in the lineouts, Visser Smit (hooker) and Wessel Strydom (prop), were prominent. Divo Welgemoed (centre) did drop a pass or two, but also dished up some brilliant play at times, with a good positional performance by fullback Tiaan Stander. For Despatch Ivan Oosthuizen (hooker), Neil Basson (lock) and Divan van Willingh (fly half) never stop trying.

Framesby started like a house on fire with Welgemoed scoring an intercept try in the first 10 seconds. They quickly build up a lead of 21-3 but lost a bit of structure in the second part of the first half when both sides struggled with their discipline.

Despatch produced their best play early in the second half when Reinhardt Roelofse broke the defence to send Roche Vermeulen away for the try. That gave Framesby the wakeup call to get in top gear to secure victory over the game visitors.

Welgemoed (2), Coetzer, Smit, Strydom and Anru Botha scored tries for Framesby and for Despatch Van Willingh added a penalty to Vermeulen’s try.
