  • Kriek proves faith in players for England clash

SA Schools coach Hein Kriek on Friday proved faith in the players that held their nerve to win against France in the Under-18 International Series for their final clash against England on Saturday as he made only a few changes to his starting team.

Kriek made five personnel changes to his team, two of which were forced by concussion, which paved the way for utility forwards Hendré Stassen and Zain Davids to be promoted from the SA Schools A team to the SA Schools team. Stassen replaces Ruben van Heerden in the run-on team, while flanker Johan Visser takes over from Cobus Wiese.

The other changes in the starting line-up were at loosehead prop where Cabous Eloff replaces Ashwyn Adams, while Curwin Bosch moves from fullback to flyhalf in place of Damian Willemse, and Andell Loubser gets a run at fullback. On the left wing Manie Libbok is selected in place of Wandisile Simelane.

“England have won both their matches in the Series so far and they are a strong unit, so we will have to be at our best to beat them,” said Kriek. “With that in mind we opted for continuity in selection in the starting line-up, however, the replacements will play an equally important role to keep alive our hopes of finishing the tournament unbeaten.

“England got the better of us in the final match of the tournament last year, which marked our first defeat in the series in four years, but I believe in the team, and if they play to their potential hopefully we can get the desired result.”

The final round of matches will be played at the City Park Stadium in Crawford, Cape Town with the SA Schools team meeting England in the Series decider, while the SA Schools A team will battle it out with Wales and France will go up against Italy.

SA Schools A coach Lance Sendin, meanwhile, made nine changes to his starting team for their clash against Wales, which features new-look looseforward and halfback combinations. Flankers Phillip Krause and Kwanda Dimaza will join forces with No8 Khanya Ncusane in the loose trio, while scrumhalf Matthew Dahl and flyhalf Bader Pretorius will dictate play. Dahl also takes over the captaincy from Stassen.

In the front row props Christopher Klopper and Mashao Mukhari have been handed starts, while Ruan Vermaak replaces Stassen at lock, and centre Abner van Reenen takes over from Cyprian Nkomo.

The SA Schools A team will meet Wales at 11h00 and the SA Schools team take on England at 15h00, with the matches being broadcast live on SuperSport 8.

  • Tough one for unbeaten Boishaai

    Tough one for unbeaten Boishaai

NuusG OakdaleThis has been a golden year for Boys’ High – who have played 17 matches and won the lot. An unbeaten season is a rarity in the tough world of South African schoolboy rugby, especially for a top school who face top opponents week in and week out. Boys’ High have this match against Oakdale and a home match against Drostdy to achieve that.

They will not have a full side out on Saturday but they will have great support as 23 teams plus parents and other supporters pour out onto the N2 for the 250-kilometre journey to Riversdale, beautiful Riversdale.

Oakdale have great admiration for this year’s Boys’ High side but are no slouches themselves. They will be going flat out. They have not suffered Paarl Boys’; High’s losses to national teams but they are without lock Adré Smith. They have homeground advantage, which is less of an advantage now that top schools play all over the place.

History is with Boys’ High who have won the last three encounters reasonably comfortably – 24-13, 38-10 and 22-7

    The Season So Far

Paarl Boys’ High are ranked top of the FNB Top 20, Oakdale 10th. That means that Oakdale will be up for the challenge.

While Boys High have won 17 out of 17, Oakdale have lost three of their 12 matches – all to Top 20 sides – Paul Roos, Paarl =Gim and HTS Middelburg. They have beaten two Top 20 sides – Outeniqua and Potchefstroom Gim, Paarl have beaten eight Top 20 teams. The closest Paarl Boys’ High have come to defeat was against Bishops whom they beat 12-7, four penalties to a goal.

    Results Against Common Opponents

Diamantveld: Oakdale won 26-13; Paarl Boys’ High won 22-12
Outeniqua: Oakdale won 24-17; Paarl Boys’ High won 23-17
Paarl Gim: Oakdale lost 31-28; Paarl Boys’ High won 16-10
Paul Roos: Oakdale lost 29-15; Paarl Boys’ High won 29-10

    Achievers

Oakdale’s players are eligible for South Western Districts, Paarl Boys’ High’s players for Western Province.

Historic Overview – Grey PE vs. Selborne College

Grey High School v Selborne College

On Saturday 15 August Selborne College will take on Eastern Cape rivals Grey High in Port Elizabeth. These schools played each other for the first time in 1926 and the history between them speaks of great sportsmanship and mutual respect. In 45 clashes over the last 40 years, Grey has won 26 with Selborne winning 19.

Since 2000 Grey has had the upper hand in this derby, with most of their all-time victories coming in the 21st century. They have won three in a row since 2012, with Selborne itching to set the record straight at Phillips Field on Saturday.

Both teams will be fielding understrength sides due to SA Schools commitments and injuries, with Grey being the hardest hit as three of their star men miss out. Flyhalf Curwin Bosch, 8th man Khwezi Mafu and lock Kamva Dilima will all be away representing SA Schools. Selborne, meanwhile, will be without their talisman centre David Britz.

Both teams have enjoyed solid campaigns so far with Grey currently 8th and Selborne 13th in the national schools rankings. Both schools contributed heavily to their respective provincial Under-18 teams and the match will have a distinctly provincial flavour.

    Rugby at Grey High
Grey High has a proud rugby history which dates back to the 19th century. Traditional schools they compete against, on an annual basis, are Dale College, Graeme College, Grey College, Queen’s College, Selborne College, St. Andrew’s College, Wynberg High and Paul Roos Gymnasium.

The first official rugby match took place on September 16 1893, against the Muir Academy. Initially rugby was played in black coats and straw hats, and a report in 1895 stated that the greatest problem rugby faced at the Grey was “the lack of rivalry which would prove strong enough to develop excellence.”

By 1897 Grey entered the men’s third league, but then went into the doldrums as Association Football (soccer) enjoyed prominence until 1908. Rugby muscled its way into the psyche of the school after Port Elizabeth hosted the Currie Cup tournament and a Test against England. The arrival of JC Hops, HT “Boetie” Gamble and NS “Tienie” Krige onto the Grey staff didn’t do any harm, either.

Things developed quickly and, by 1933, Grey had its first Springboks in Bunny Reid, Fred Smollan and Fred Turner. Their team manager was Wally Mangennis, an Old Grey who had captained the 1st XV for four seasons.

Rugby initially found its home at the Crusader Ground in St George’s Park. This relationship extended after the move to the school’s present site in College Drive – as Rector Way would not have rugby played on its precious cricket fields.

Money for the main field was donated by an Old Grey, Arthur Phillip, in 1938 and thus it became the Phillip Field.

Players who represented the Springboks through the years include: Jack Hirsh, Fred Smollan, Fred Turner, George Smith, Bunny Reid, Peter Allen, Giepie Wentzel (Master), Roy Dryburgh, Mickey Gerber, Wilf Rosenberg, Iain Kirkpatrick, Sean Povey, Luke Watson and, most recently, Siya Kolisi and JJ Engebrecht.

Luke Watson, Mpho Mbiyozo and Steven Hunt have also represented the South Africa Sevens side.

Mike Willemse represented South Africa at the 2013 Junior World Cup in France. Well known television commentators and outstanding players Gavin Cowley and Andrew Patterson also graced the Phillip Field.

Special mention must also be made of Michael Catt, Rory Duncan and Luke Watson – who captained the England, Free State and Western Province Currie Cup sides respectively.

    Rugby at Selborne College

Selborne began playing rugby in 1892 when it met Dale College of King William’s Town, in what remains an enthusiastic fixture to this day. As with most schools in South Africa, early rugby opponents were men’s teams and in the early days soccer had a grip on the imagination until rugby finally took over in 1912.

Now Selborne plays teams all over South Africa as one of the country’s best known schools, not only for its strength but also for the expansive game it plays and its spirit of sportsmanship.

In 1926 Selborne first played Grey High, which is still a big Interschools day each year as the schools get together for all manner of sporting and cultural activities.

In 1992 Selborne hosted a festival which included teams from England and Zimbabwe, as well as touring the UK. In 2002 a nationwide rugby competition for schools was introduced by Media24 and Selborne became the first winners when they beat Paarl Gim 11-10 in the final.

Dale College, of nearby King William’s Town, are rivals in chief, but there are also big matches with Grey High, Queen’s College in Queenstown and Grey College in Bloemfontein.

The following Old Boys have played for South Africa: Bernard Duffy, Innes Froneman, André de Wet, Ray Carlson, Keith and Mark Andrews, André Vos and Brent Russell.

Duffy also swam and played waterpolo for Border and was later the president of the Border Rugby Union. His brother Aubrey also played for Border.

The Andrews family, from up in the magnificent foothills of the Drakensberg, have had a big impact on Selborne rugby. Keith’s father, Kenny, captained Selborne in 1953, Keith in 1981.

Kenny’s brother Fish played for Selborne and had three sons who captained the college: Gary in 1981, Murray in 1983 and Mark in 1990. Mark was at one stage South Africa’s most capped Springbok of all time.

  • Bosch’s boot secure victory for SA Schools

The accurate boot of South African Schools’ fullback, Curwin Bosch, secured a 12-5 victory over France u18 in their clash at Outeniqua Park in George. Bosch slotted four penalties in a tightly contested match which saw the French score the only try in the final minute of the clash.

A try-saving tackle by South African scrumhalf, Embrose Papier, stopped the visitors’ outside centre, Nathan Decron, scoring a try just a few minutes earlier. Papier made quite a few cross-covering tackles during the match. The other South African whom deserves a mention is the centre Stedman Gans who managed to beat the first defender a few times during the match.

For France no one was better than their livewire hooker, Peato Mauvaka. He hit the rucks hard and also doubled up as an extra loose forward. The French are the u18 Six Nations Champions this year after beating Georgia convincingly by 57-0 in the final.

The unlikely Georgia reached the final after beating Ireland (quarterfinal) and Italy (semi-final) in two successive matches being decided by a penalty shootout. The match against Ireland ended in a 8-all draw after which Georgia won the shootout by 3-1.

Against Italy the two team where deadlocked 6-all at the final. The Georgians then won the penalty shootout by 5-4 to book their place in the final with France. The French defeated England by 23-19 in their semi-final and with this victory also halted the English onslaught to bag their fourth succesive European title.

The English flyhalf and captain, Max Malins, scored within the opening minute of his side’s clash against the South African Schools’ A-side at Outeniqua Park in George. Malins also completed a brace of tries before being substituted during half-time. England u18 won the match comfortably by 33-8 after already leading 26-3 at the break.

He played a major part in Felsted School reaching the Schools Cup Vase final in 2013. His side however lost 17-15 against Yarm School at Twickenham. The South African team’s replacement outside centre, Abner van Reenen, scored his side’s only try 62nd minute.

Van Reenen will play a major role for his school, Garsfontein, next week Tuesday in the Beeld Noordvaal Trophy’s semi-final against Monument of Krugersdorp. The Beeld Noordvaal Trophy is the oldest schools’ rugby competition in South Africa.

Wales u18 defeated Italy u18 by 32-10 in the first match of the day in George. The Dragons build up a 18-5 lead at the break.

    Scorers:

    SA Schools 12 (9) – Penalties: Curwin Bosch (4). France u18 5 (0) – Try: Thomas Darmon.

England u18 33 (26) – Tries: Max Malins (2), Gabriel Ibitoye, Josh Bayliss, Theo Clews. Conversions: Malins (3), Clews. SA Schools A 8 (3) – Try: Abner van Reenen. Penalty: Eddie Fouche.

Beeld Noordvaal Trofee Uitslae – 8 Augustus 2015

  • SA Schools teams named for opening U18 International Series fixtures

SA Schools coach Hein Kriek and his SA Schools A counterpart Lance Sendin on Thursday named their teams for the opening round of matches in the Under-18 International Series at the City Park Stadium in Crawford on Friday.

The SA Schools team will face Wales at 16h00 and the SA Schools A team will go up against Italy in the opening match of the day at 12h00. In the other fixture England and France will battle it out at 14h00.
Kriek named all four players who participated in last year’s tournament in his starting line-up, namely flyhalf and 2014 Coca-Cola Craven Week player of the Year, Curwin Bosch, scrumhalf Embrose Papier, fullback Andell Loubser and flank Cobus Wiese.
With the bulk of the 26-man SA Schools squad being made up of players from Western Province, who registered the highest score in a the final match at the Coca-Cola Craven Week last month with their 95-0 win against Eastern Province, Kriek had the luxury of selecting a few settled player combinations.

The tight-five, with the exception of Blue Bulls loosehead prop Cabous Eloff, are all members of the triumphant Western Province team, while their Craven Week captain Ernst van Rhyn, will lead the side against Wales from the side of the scrum.

Bosch and Papier, meanwhile, were both in the squad last year and should be familiar with each other’s style of play.
With the Under-18 International Series serving as a platform to expose young players to top-class rugby from a young age, all six teams will field squads larger than the standard 23 players.

Kriek said his team was excited ahead of the tournament and he hoped that the familiarity among the players would give them an edge, but he was under no illusions about the challenge.

“I am pleased with the quality of our training sessions since the squad assembled and it was fantastic to see them gel as a team in such a short time,” said Kriek. “Hopefully they will be able to transfer this positive attitude on the field from the outset, as we are playing against quality teams who have come to South Africa to make their presence felt.

“Unfortunately we suffered our first defeat in four years in the Under-18 International Series against England last year, so it is important for us to hit the ground running from our opening match against Wales. We tried to keep some combinations together from the Coca-Cola Craven Week as we only had a few days to prepare for the clash against Wales, and we hope that it will pay off.”

Sendin, meanwhile, also selected a strong starting line-up for their clash against Italy, which features the KwaZulu-Natal halfback pairing of scrumhalf Matthew Dahl and flyhalf Bader Pretorius.

Captain Hendré Stassen will join forces with PJ Steenkamp at lock, while props Abram Venter and Ignatius Prinsloo, and hooker Andre Lategan will complete a tough tight-five, who will be expected to lay a strong foundation up-front.
