Christoffels stars in Day 2 of Cubs Week

The South African Universities’ opening batsman, Kirwin Christoffels (98) just missed out on recording a century on the second day of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) annual Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. Christoffels side the Chevrolet Warriors and their opposition the bizhub Highveld Lions’ match rained out after the former completed their innings.

Christoffels also recorded a solid 29 runs in his side’s first match against the Sunfoil Dolphins on the first day. He must be one of the contenders to make the South African under-19 side to the ICC u19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates next month. He was supported well in the match against the Lions by Lloyd Brown (76) who represented the national u19-side last year while touring India. They shared a 98-run partnership over the third wicket.

Another national u19 player, Kagiso Rabada (2/44) had the best bowling figures for the Highveld Lions.

Three spin bowlers have put up their hands with good performances on the first two days of the tournament. Lance Roelfse (Warriors), Greg Oldfield (Sunfoil Dolphins) and Sine Ntshona (Chevrolet Knights) all gave the selectors food for thought.

Oldfield helped the Dolphins to a victory with his unbeaten 38 runs in his side’s total of 110/4 in their recalculated allotted 34 overs against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras. The Cobras had to score 143 runs in 33 overs according to the Duckworth/Lewis method. The Dolphins won the match by 37 runs after the Cobras could only manage 73/7 in 22.4 when rain interrupted play for the final time.

The hosts’ South African Schools’ player, Clyde Fortuin (21) scored the most of his side’s runs.

The Knights’ spin bowlers Ntshona (3/27 in seven overs) and Sean Whitehead (1/17 in six overs) restricted the South African under-17 side to 124/7 before rain stopped play in this match at Pniel. For the national side their captain Andrew Rushmere (25) offered the most resistance.

The Unlimited Titans recorded a six wicket victory over Zimabwe in a match which was also affected by the rain. Their spin bowler, Leus du Plooy (2/27) was his side’s best bowler for a second match in a row.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Chevrolet Warriors 272/4 (Kirwin Christoffels 98, Lloyd Brown 76, Aubrey Ferreira 38; Kagiso Rabada 2/44); bizhub Highveld Lions did not bat. No Result.

Sunfoil Dolphins 110/4 in 34 overs (Greg Oldfield 38*, Luke Schlemmer 21; Ndumisa Mvelase 1/7); Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras 73/7 in 22.4 overs (Clyde Fortuin 21; Lwandisami Zuma 2/13). Dolphins win by 37 runs (Duckworth/Lewis method).

South Africa u17 124/7 (Andrew Rushmere 25; Sine Ntshona 3/27); Chevrolet Knights did not bat. No Result.

Players flourish on Day 1 of CSA Cubs Week

The South African Schools’ captain of 2013, Yaseen Valli got his side the bizhub Highveld Lions of to a winning start at the 2014 edition of Cricket South Africa’s annual Cubs Week in Stellenbosch.

Valli (65*) played a mature half-century after his side was struggling at 63/5 at a stage in their match against the South African under-17 side. The Lions are the defending champions of the tournament of which there will be a final played to decide the champions for the first time since its inception in 2009.

Dayyaan Galiem grabbed for wickets for only 29 runs was the main destroyer for the national u17-side. Galiem was in the national u19-side which toured India last year. Two other players who performed well on the opening day of the Cubs Week was also members of this team.

Greg Oldfield of the Sunfoil Dolphins grabbed an impressive seven wickets for 42 runs with his off spin bowling in his side’s match against the Chevrolet Warriors. Oldfield didn’t make the South African Schools’ side last year after making the side in 2012. He did however took a hat-trick of wickets in his final match of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Durban last year.

His performance was however not enough to secure a victory as Warriors’ leg spinner, Lance Roelfse stepped to the fore as bowled his side to a 59-run victory. Roelfse grabbed six wickets for a mere 12 runs.

Aiden Markram of the Unlimited Titans was a member of the team to India, but is playing in his first Cubs Week. He also haven’t played at a Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in his career. He scored 72 runs as the Titans beat the Chevrolet Knights by seven wickets. Leus du Plooy (34*) also made a valuable contribution with the bat in hand. Du Plooy was also the best bowler for his side as he dismissed three batsmen for 19 runs.

The Knights struggled to 158 after they were in a commanding position on 77/2 after 11 overs. Christian Steyn (48) made the biggest contribution with the bat of which 16 runs came in the first over of the match bowled by Dustin Melton (2/50).

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras defeated Zimbabwe by six wickets in their encounter. Zimbabwe is drawn in the same group as South Africa for the ICC u19 World Cup which will be hosted in the United Arab Emirates next month.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Chevrolet Warriors 222 (Lloyd Brown 39, Bradley Bopp 38; Greg Oldfield 7/42); Sunfoil Dolphins 118 (Jason Oakes 53; Lance Roelfse 6/12). Chevrolet Warriors won by 59 runs (Duckworth/Lewis method).

  • Grey PE returns undefeated from the UK

A squad of 25 prospective Grey High School 1st XV players undertook a 13 day, five match of the United Kingdom in late November and early December.

Much is expected of this group of Under-17 and Under-16 players who will make up the Grey 1st XV next season, and they didn’t disappoint-winning all five of their matches on tour.

    Grey vs Abingdon: won 61-5

The first match of the tour was against Abingdon School, situated close to famed and ancient university town of Oxford. Our opponents seemed inspired in the opening exchanges, and it took some inspired defence to keep them from breaching our try-line. We turned around at the half-time break up by 19 points to nil. The second half was a different affair – as our dominance of all collisions and some brutally efficient work at the breakdown saw us begin to rack up the points. The match ended with a scoreline of 61 points to 5, an emphatic and pleasing start to the tour.

    Grey vs Millfield: won 37-35

Match two of the tour was against Millfield School in Somerset, a highly rated sports school. Millfield’s sporting facilities are the envy of the world – and their rugby team didn’t disappoint. The presence of their full strength Under-18 side made for a tough and uncompromising encounter, with the lead changing hands almost at will. We were disappointed to leak three soft tries through an increasingly porous defensive effort – but continued to be effective from the drive and dangerous on the counterattack when we spread the ball. A penalty by Curwin Bosch made the difference in an 11 try thriller – one for the neutral spectator, but definitely heart stopping for the diehard Old Greys present on the touchline!

Grey vs Plymouth College: won 33-0

Our third stop on tour was in the naval city of Plymouth, where we met our hosts Plymouth College under lights as a curtain raiser for a Championship Club match between Plymouth Albion RFC and Rotherham Titans. The setting was splendid and the boys were excited – which resulted in some sloppy execution on a night we couldn’t or wouldn’t respond to the requirements of the situation, trying to run out of trouble or crashing it up when there was an overlap. We scored five tries but left the ground disappointed, and aware that a superior effort would be required against the might of London Irish.

Grey vs London Irish Under-17: won 36-10

Our fourth stop was in Maidenhead to play the regional Under-17 team coordinated by London Irish. Irish, along with Saracens and Wasps, divide the southern part of England into various regions, and are able to call upon boys from schools in their region. This gives these club academy sides the relative strength of Craven Week teams in South Africa, and while we were playing a squad of similar age for the first time on tour, the boys were mentally prepared for our biggest match on tour by far.

To add spice to the occasion we were playing on a synthetic surface – a first for the entire squad and management.

We started well – very well – and had run in three tries in the first five minutes to lead by 19 points to nil. Our hosts began to wear us down, and scored two tries of their own to end the half 19 points to 10 in our favour. That was the sum total of their resistance though – as we scored a further two tries and a penalty goal to end victorious by 36 points to 10. The conditions had suited us – the firm surface allowing us to exploit Irish’s lack of width on defence and use our speedsters – Dylan Vermaak scoring a hat trick of tries.

    Grey vs Monmouth: won 21-15

Our last match of the tour was against perennial Welsh powerhouse Monmouth school. The ancient village of Monmouth is dominated by a 1000 year old church, and the school itself will turn 400 next year. The match was played in extremely cold and murky conditions, which together with increasingly sore bodies after five matches in under two weeks, made for a very tough day at the office. Captain Johann van Niekerk limped off after a minute or two before Monmouth opened the scoring after bashing away at our try-line for what seemed to be ages. The conversion sailed wide, and shortly afterwards Curwin Bosch chipped ahead and surged past the Monmouth fullback to score in the right hand corner. His conversion was successful and we led by 7 points to 5 at the half. We opened the scoring in the second half after an impressive maul from a lineout. The conversion was good and we led by 14 points to 5. Monmouth scored their second try and we led by 4 points.

The last 20 minutes were tense, as Monmouth dominated possession while we were content to keep them pinned in their own 22 metre area with some fine tactical kicking. Our third try came after Bosch created a hole in the Monmouth defences to send Junior Pokomela through to score under the poles – our lead seemingly unassailable at 21 points to 10. Our passionate hosts had other ideas and began to bash their way up field before scoring another try from close range to trail by 21 points to 15. A tense final five minutes followed before the final whistle ended-the victory a fitting end to our tour – a victory to send outgoing coach Rory Duncan to the Cheetahs on a high.

  • Rain wreaks havoc on Day 3 of Coke Week

Rain wreaks havoc on Day 3 of Coke Week

Rain was the main role player on the third day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Durban. Of the morning’s Twenty/20 matches none produced a result due to rain showers. In the afternoon’s round of matches only one match the one between Free State and Northerns got underway.

Free State defeated Northerns in the only result produced on the third day of the tournament. Their hero being Nico Loubser with an allround performance grabbing two wickets for only 20 runs as well as contributing 39 runs with the bat in hand. He faced only 20 deliveries of which he struck four big maximums. Opening batsman, Christian Steyn (45*) saw Free State home, but was also involved in a few run outs as well.

Easterns’ opening batsman, Wickus Germishuizen (67) recorded the highest innings of the day to continue his good form at Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) national weeks. Germishuizen has accumulated 142 runs at this year’s tournament thus far at an average of 71 runs per innings. He has yet to score a century as Daniël Griesel of Mpumalanga is the only centurion of the tournament thus far. Griesel is also the only batsman to have scored more runs than Germishuizen in Durban.

Germishuizen has scored a century for the last three years at each of the three national weeks he attended. He scored 136 runs against Griqualand West in 2010 at the national u15 tournament. He averaged an unbelievable 200 runs per innings during this tournament.

Germishuizen played at the national u17 tournament in 2011 and 2012 in Bloemfontein and Cape Town respectively. In Bloemfontein he scored 101 runs in his side’s match against Zimababwe. In the Mother City he totalled 297 runs at an average of 59.4 runs per innings. He recorded his century (131) against Limpopo at this tournament.
