  • Wynberg Festival kicks off the Western Cape school rugby season in style

Wynberg Boys’ High kicks off their 2024 rugby season this weekend at their annual rugby festival, where they, and the rest of the peninsular powerhouses, will hope to hit the ground running before league matches get underway.

Watch all the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the event

The hosts will be aiming to build up some momentum when they take on the visiting Windhoek High School in the main match on Saturday.

With some of last year’s stalwarts, including Luqobo Makwendini (prop), Aden da Costa (flanker), Torren February (eighth man), Yaqeen Ahmed (flyhalf) and Brandon Ashburner (centre), bolstering the Wynberg side, they will be aiming to set the bar high and will expect to do well against the Namibians.

Ahmed and Ashburner menaced their opposition’s defensive lines last season, and they will bear watching on Saturday.

SACS tackle Hoërskool Durbanville and Rondebosch Boys’ High squares off against Oakdale Landbou, while dozens of other teams will be in action across five fields over four action-packed days.

After suffering the wrath of an angry Paarl Boys’ High last weekend, which resulted in a 73-7 defeat at the Porterville festival, the Durbies will be anxious to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.

Oakdale beat Ligbron 40-0 in George at the Outeniqua 101 Year Festival this past Saturday, but the Rondebosch boys will pose a completely different challenge for them on this Saturday.

The opening day, Friday, will allow fans a first glimpse of the Bishops Diocesan College 1st XV, which will represent the school in its milestone 175th anniversary year.

Bishops take on Windhoek High in their first outing, before grappling with St Charles College on Sunday, just before Saints hop back on a flight to Pietermaritzburg.

While the fixtures will be competitive and exciting, they will also offer coaches a final opportunity to fine-tune their tactics and structures before their teams travel to different tournaments and league matches begin. Innovative and exciting rugby is on the cards.

With 75 matches and nearly 2 000 players in action over the weekend, this year’s event will be the first to take place over four days as Wynberg welcomes the winter season in style.

  • Loads of action awaits at the Brakkies Sports Weekend

Loads of action awaits at the Brakkies Sports Weekend

NewsG BrackenfellThe annual Brackenfell Sports Weekend kicks off on Friday and promises bucketloads of school sports action for fans to enjoy.

With a total of 110 rugby teams, 74 netball teams and 50 hockey teams in action over the course of two days, the Brakkies are preparing for a chock-a-block weekend as the winter school sports season hits full steam ahead.

Watch all of the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the event

Brackenfell‘s 1st XV plays under the lights on Friday, taking on Hopefield at 20:30, in front of their home supporters.

They had a challenging start to their campaign this year when they took on Framesby at the pre-season Outeniqua 101 Year Festival last weekend.

Though they lost that match 12-31, there were promising signs, with players like their fullback, Zane van Schalkwyk, who crossed the line twice in that match, showing off their capabilities on attack.

Hopefield enjoyed a solid season last year and ended their campaign with a decisive 60-5 win over Melkbosstrand, so it will be exciting to see if they can recreate that form against the hosts this early in 2024, especially since the Melkies got one over Brackenfell at the Drostdy pre-season sports day, at the beginning of March, winning 14-10.

On Saturday, the game between Worcester Gimnasium and Tygerberg promises to be a highlight.

The Gimmies were an exciting team to follow in 2023 and they hit the ground running, winning both of their matches at the Drostdy festival, and then recorded a 19-0 victory over Langenhoven Gim at the Kwagga Sports Day.

Armaan Adendorff (prop) and Aiden Abrahams (flyhalf) have emerged as two exciting prospects for the team from Worcester.

The Tigers got off to a slow start at the HTS Drostdy event, but with a proud rugby heritage, and boasting alumni like the World Cup-winning lock-duo of Eben Etzebeth and Marvin Orie, you can count on the boys from Tygerberg to put on a show against the Bolanders on Saturday.

  • Ligbron wil beste voet voorsit teen omgekrapte Jansies

Ligbron t. Dr EG Jansen om 13:00 in Ermelo:

Ligbron Akademie: 15 Ntando Simelane, 14 Siyanda Dennison, 13 Anele Ngwenya, 12 Lethi Ngwenya, 11 Bandile Thanjekwayo, 10 Divan van Jaarsveld, 9 Renier van Staden, 8 Janco Claasen, 7 Lusanda Nkosi, 6 Tiaan Botha, 5 Thamsanga Lamula, 4 Jaco van Wyk, 3 Divan Scheepers, 2 Marnus Marx, 1 Tiaan Groenewald.

Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen: 15 R-Jay Pieterson, 14 TK Ngobese, 13 Jean-dre Claasens. 12 Steven Williams, 11 Deshean Peterson, 10 Matthew Bergman, 9 JP Jooste, 8 Marco Ventura, 7 Divan Francis, 6 Zaide-Leigh Rippenaar, 5 Zandre Naude, 4 Ettiene Smit, 3 Duwan Potgieter, 2 Danre Pike, 1 Zian Marais.

  • Eunice wins, big victories for Cambridge and Rhenish at Greg Beling Festival

Eunice, Cambridge, Rhenish and Stirling all claimed wins in Thursday’s opening games of the Greg Beling Hockey Festival in East London.

Ranked number one in South Africa in 2023, Eunice had a challenging start to their season at the Balling Hockey Festival in Bethlehem, suffering three defeats in succession before righting the ship and scoring successive victories. Against DSG Makhanda, they made it three wins on the trot after a 2-1 victory.

The teams are no strangers to each other. They met last year at the Greg Beling Festival, too, and Eunice powered their way to a 5-0 victory on that occasion.

In the festival’s first game, Cambridge crushed Montana 3-0 on their home Astro. Rhenish impressed with a comfortable 4-1 win over Clarendon, while Stirling High School scored a 2-1 win over Curro Waterstone in the last match of the day.

On Friday, the action ramps up, with 18 matches on the schedule.

Eunice locks horns with Cambridge in the day’s first match, while Cradock High School takes on Krugersdorp High School in an early afternoon game.

Montana, after going down in their first match, will be out to redeem themselves when they take on Die Brandwag.

Stirling wraps up the second day’s action with an outing against Collegiate.

The girls from Gqeberha have produced consistently good hockey in recent seasons, but based on Thursday’s results, they’ll be in for a tough test from Cambridge.

Some of the teams running out for the first time in the Festival on Friday are expected to be among South Africa’s best in 2024, including Oranje, Pearson and St Anne’s.

The Western Province u18 girls’ team will enter day two of the South African Junior Water Polo Championships in East London in high spirits after going unbeaten on the opening day of the tournament at the Joan Harrison Swimming Pool.

Province had been tabbed as one of the favourites after their impressive showing at last year’s Schools Water Polo South Africa Inter-Provincial Tournament where they narrowly lost to Central Gauteng in the final.

They announced themselves to the East London crowd in superb fashion on Thursday, clawing their way to a nail-biting 15-12 win over Buffalo City in their opener.

Hannah Banks and Emily van Heerden grabbed hattricks, while Alexa de Villers struck four times. In response, Tori Voke put six into the back of the Western Province net for Buffalo City.

Coach Connor Whiting‘s side then took on the stern challenge of Central Gauteng in a clash that had, no doubt, been circled by the players and supporters.

With the Western Province boys’ team backing them from the stands, the Province girls dug deep, twice hauling themselves back into the contest after falling behind.

Roxanne Uys contributed a brace, while Emily van Heerden added a double to her earlier hattrick, but it was Hannah Banks, with five goals, who was the driving force behind a 12-6 win for Western Province.

Another team that impressed on day one was KwaZulu-Natal, under the guidance of coach Jason Sileno.

After a nervous start, in which they played to a 9-9 draw against Nelson Mandela Bay, before winning on penalties, KZN rectified their errors in their second match of the day to claim a 16-11 win over the hosts.

They will need to bring their A-game early on Friday when they take on a bruised Central Gauteng side.

Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay will be confident of securing a semi-final spot after they bounced back to defeat Buffalo City in the final game of day one.

Top performances by Teagan Harty and Matipa Karimazondo steered the side to a dramatic 10-9 victory.

Friday’s action sees Central Gauteng tackling Buffalo City at 08:00. An hour later, KZN battles Western Province, with the two semi-finals set to be played late in the day.

The highly anticipated South African Junior Water Polo Championships got off to an exhilarating start in East London on Thursday with a number of teams asserting themselves and building early momentum ahead of a busy weekend in the Joan Harrison Swimming Pool.

Overnight rain freshened the water and, as the day progressed, the sun came out to play, making for perfect conditions for water polo.

The teams expected to stand out duly delivered as Western Province, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and Central Gauteng dominated proceedings.

It was Province, and coach Rob Ambler’s KZN side, though, that grabbed the spotlight, with both units recording three wins apiece.

Coach Jabulani Sibiya‘s Western Province team, the tournament favourites, started their campaign with a 15-5 win over the Northern Tigers. In their second encounter, they overran Nelson Mandela Bay 23-8, with Arkin Marais, Thomas Truter, and Connor-Melling Williams scoring hattricks. Then, they outplayed Buffalo City 18-4, with Jandro Rojo-Ross netting four times.

KZN, on the other hand, were made to work hard to maintain their unbeaten record.

After edging out the hosts, Buffalo City, 14-11, in their opener, they took on Central Gauteng in what was arguably the match of the day, before outscoring Nelson Mandela Bay 18-11 in their last outing.

Against Central Gauteng, KZN trailed early on but managed to stay close, with very little to separate the sides through the first two chukkas.

KZN’s Meyer Malherbe and Oliver Ditz were ruthless in front of goal and made telling contributions for their team at critical points during contest.

Trailing 6-7 heading into the final chukka, after goals for Gauteng by Ross Rovelli, Greg Pryce, and Ross Stuart, Ambler’s troops changed the complexion of the contest by attacking with grit and determination, and capitalising on their opportunities.

Goals by Malherbe, Ditz, James Pohl and Luca Sandri eventually led to a convincing victory.

Gauteng, on the other hand, will rue their missed opportunities, but they have two opportunities to book a spot in the semi-finals on Friday.

After winning their third match against the Northern Tigers by a 21-4 margin, coach Jon-Marc de Carvalho’s charges take on Buffalo City and Western Province on Friday. A win in either match would be enough to secure a place in the top four.

In other matches on Thursday, Buffalo City won against the Northern Tigers to boost their chances of making the semis.

Their day two clash against Nelson Mandela Bay, on Friday at 14:00,, could determine which team joins KZN, Province and, likely, Central Gauteng in the battle for top honours.

Both Eastern Cape outfits will be eager to impress in their home province after a rough opening day. Buffalo City’s results included an 18-4 loss to Province, while NMB went winless in their three matches.

Meanwhile, day two will not be any kinder to the Northern Tigers. They face a confident KZN side at 13:00.

Friday’s action begins at 07:00 with a clash of the tournament’s two unbeaten teams, KZN and Western Province.

ALL the action will be LIVE on the SuperSport Schools App, and DSTV Channel 216.

  • Saints seek redemption against Bennies

St Stithians College will be seeking redemption when they face their rivals St Benedict’s College, who twice defeated them last season.

When last the teams met, in June 2023, Bennies won 33-15 at home. At the beginning of May, they triumphed 26-17 on Jamieson Field.

That’s where the sides will meet on Saturday. Home ground advantage will be in Saints‘ favour come the midday kick-off, and they’ll be motivated by their twin setbacks of last year.

St Stithians College players to watch include flyhalf Chris Anderson, whose tactical kicking game is a key asset.

Last year, Tashinga Chichgonzo dotted down twice against Bennies. Now the Saints’ vice-captain, he would love to replicate that individual performance, but this time with a win attached to his individual success.

Spearheading the visitors’ effort will be their captain and 8th-man, Jason Cutler, whose leadership will be instrumental in driving his team forward.

In the Bennies’ backline, keep an eye-out for the Le Roux twins, Declan and Braeden, who will man the critical scrumhalf and flyhalf positions respectively.

“They will play a crucial role in dictating the pace and direction of play for St Benedict’s, who will have a different looking backline when compared to last year’s,” said coach Andrew Barnes.

Saturday’s match will be the first of the season for St Stithians. St Benedict’s have played one game, but it wasn’t much of a tester, as they cruised to a 67-7 win over Queens High School.

With Easter festivals looming, Saturday’s showdown is also a key opportunity for the teams to find their form ahead of the showcase events which, of course, include the Saints Easter Festival, now into its 40th year.

Dennis sal egter ‘n waardige teenstander in Fochies se losskakel, Petri Schutee, hê.
