Fixtures for the Buffalo City High Schools League of 2023

The city of East London is keeping soccer alive and well in a province predominant of rugby and other sporting code areas.

The Buffalo City High Schools Soccer League devised three separate league tiers under the local football association of Bunkers West Local Football Association. Bunkers West is a SAFA recognised Local Football Association and under their guidance and guideline High Schools participating in these leagues are eligible for SAFA competitions.

The province is blessed with talent as much as other provinces when it comes to football, however there are significant constraints in getting that talent out there. During an interview with the league coordinators, Matthew Geach and Tevin Klaase they highlighted some of these factors: Lack of media coverage, sponsorships deals and commitments from the relevant structures in supporting and nurturing the talent that the provinces posses results in lost opportunities for the young boys who hope to play the sport at a professional level.

The Buffalo City High Schools Soccer league has come from a long run and the team has been applauded for its growth over the years. Currently the league is set up in three blocks (Block A, B and Block C) designed in a manner that each block has been allocated based on their geographical location to further assist schools that may have transport issues getting to travel the pupils to the games out of their reach. The league coordinators also said that they are in the process of setting up a Girls High Soccer Schools league to further encourage the growth of soccer in the region.

The league is already under-way, Selborne College is leading the table with 9 points after successfully winning their three games.

Here are today’s fixtures are as follows- Block B:

    Round 5 – 22/03/2023

Dale College vs Center of Excellence
    Stutternheim vs Selborne College
    Merrifield vs De Vos Malan
    George Randell vd Baysville

    Round 6 – 19/04/2023

Selborne College vs Center of Excellence
    Cathcart vs Dale College
    Baysville vs Stutterheim
    George Randell vs Merrifield

Graeme College rugby event set to soar in school’s 150th year

NewsG Graeme College schools rugby Easter FestivalIn celebration of the school’s 150th anniversary, Graeme College have brought in a fresh dimension to their annual rugby day by extending it to a festival over three days in March next year.

And adding the cherry on the top will be the appearance of crack rugby schools such as Grey College from Bloemfontein, Hilton from KwaZulu-Natal and SACS from Cape Town, all of whom will provide fascinating opposition for their Eastern Cape opponents.

Naturally, Graeme have not forgotten the loyal support they have annually received from the local teams and the cream of Eastern Cape’s schools will again be in action in this traditional pipe-opener to the season.

The festival will take place from March 23 to 25, but not all teams will be in action for the full three days. The fixtures have been arranged so that those schools who play on Thursday will only be in action again on Saturday, while the programme on Friday will see those teams play only once.

Tournament director Nico van der Meulen said they had wanted to do something special to celebrate a significant year in the school’s history.

“We have enjoyed huge success with our traditional Graeme Rugby Day over the years, but we felt we just wanted to take it to the next level on the occasion of our 150th celebrations,” he said.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Grey College, who have appeared once before, SACS and Hilton to our event, and are also grateful for the outstanding support we have received from our Eastern Cape colleagues.

“It should be an excellent three days of rugby and an ideal opportunity for coaches to continue fine-tuning their sides for the season.”

As one of the perennially top teams in the country, Grey College will add a sharp edge to the competition when they take on Marlow Agricultural in Thursday’s feature match and then face Makhanda outfit St Andrew’s in the main curtain-raiser on Saturday.

Although these are daunting prospects for the local outfits, it will be a great opportunity for them to embrace the challenge of taking on one of the best rugby schools in the land.

Hilton face two massive examinations against Brandwag and Framesby, while the festival looks destined for a cracking start when SACS take on St Andrew’s in Thursday’s opening fixture.

The hosts have not shied away from giving themselves two tough encounters, with a Thursday showdown against Framesby, followed by a clash with SACS on Saturday in what should be a fitting finale to the festival.

Grey High will be in action only on the Friday, playing the feature match against Hudson Park, while East London powerhouse Selborne also play only once, facing Nico Malan in the main curtain-raiser on the same day.

Besides the first team fixtures, Graeme will also be arranging age-group games on the Marais Field, with this line-up still to be confirmed. The U14 and U16 sections will play on Thursday and Friday, while Saturday will see an U13 festival taking place.

    The first team fixtures are:

    PHOTO: Martin Ashworth

What a spectacular effort from the boys of Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse alike.

Its not everyday you have a game this neck and neck. It was so close, with Maritzburg dominating the first half and Michaelhouse coming back strong in the second with something to prove.

Elbie Mouton, hooker, of Maritzburg, got the team into a good position as he scored two tries. Tallying half of their total points. Aiden Botha, tight-head prop, also put five points on the board for Maritzburg, as he landed them a try.

Luc du Toit, flyhalf for Maritzburg College, had a good day of kicking, as he managed to boot a penalty and a conversion for his squad. Maritzburg could walk off the field with their heads held high; as they put up a great fight, albeit the final score of 20-27 in Michaelhouse’s favour.

Michaelhouse deserves a big pat on the back for their performance this Saturday. If they can keep this level of energy up, they are going places this season. They have the potential to be one of the schools strongest units to date; all they need to do is focus and keep up the hard work.

Leo Muziva (left wing), Fortune Mpofu (flanker) and Campbell Ridl (outside centre) each scored a try for Michaelhouse. Fullback, Luke Davidson, slotted three conversions and and two penalties for the team, tallying twelve of their total twenty seven points.

This was a competitive and entertaining game to watch, this should be an interesting season for both institutions. All the best to the boys and their coaches, and a big congratulations to Michaelhouse for their victory.

Deano Boesak, flyhalf of Durban High School, scored 20 points as his side eased past St Charles’ College by 52-14. Boesak scored a brace of tries and also converted five of his side’s eight tries for his personal tally.

Outside centre, Amahle Mazibuko, as well as winger Maurice Willemse also scored twice. It was the first game between DHS and St Charles in a few year mainly due to Covid.

Bloem powerhouse primed to excite in Graeme Rugby Festival

South African schools powerhouse Grey College are relishing the prospect of returning to Makhanda when they take part in the GBS Graeme College Rugby Festival from March 23-25.

The Bloemfontein school, who took part in the Graeme Rugby Day several seasons ago, have for many years been the benchmark of excellence in SA schoolboy rugby and their presence adds lustre to an already impressive programme of matches over the three days.

To celebrate their 150th anniversary Graeme have extended their annual one-day tournament to a three-day format, enabling them to attract such exciting teams as Grey College, Hilton and SACS to the event.

In addition, leading Eastern Cape schools such as Selborne, Framesby, Grey High, Queen’s and Kingswood and Dale will be in action over the three days.

Grey College, in particular, will be high on everyone’s list to watch as they combine a powerful pack of forwards with an exciting backline.

They will be up against Marlow Agricultural and St Andrew’s, providing a wonderful opportunity for those two teams to measure themselves against the best.

Grey director of rugby Bobby Joubert said they were excited about being part of the festival, which would provide excellent preparation for their 2023 programme.

“It really is great to be back at the Graeme College Festival and we feel it’s important to support traditional rugby schools in SA,” he said.

“Also coming up against teams that we don’t regularly play such as Marlow and St Andrew’s gives us an opportunity to test ourselves against different systems.

“We are also preparing for upcoming fixtures at the North-South tournament and the Wildeklawer, but having said that, we are definitely not underestimating the Eastern Cape schools.

“They both performed well with young teams in 2022 and now they will play with experienced players.”

After going through a series of trials, the Grey College team are itching to experience some competitive action to test their combinations.

“We have a young backline that will accept the challenges ahead,” Joubert said. “Our forwards are more settled, with players who represented the first team in 2022.

“I believe our strengths will be the aerial domination of our players. We have to work on our ruck speed to avoid slow ball and turnovers.

While Grey have built a worldwide reputation for their rugby excellence, Joubert said their philosophy was to develop their pupils holistically.

“Our priority is to create a balanced individual through our rugby programme for them to be successful in life and not just in rugby,” he said.

In just less than two weeks, the young Grey College men will get a chance to show their credentials both on and off the field in what will be a thrilling three days’ of action in Makhanda.

  • Rusties on top against Montana in epic battle in NWU Prestige Series

Rusties on top against Montana in epic battle in NWU Prestige Series

NewsGMontanaHoërskool Rustenberg held on to a 24-20 win over Montana in an epic battle between the two sides on Thursday in Pretoria.

It was a closely fought match throughout, with Montana showing great improvement since last week’s loss against Die Anker in Brakpan.

Monties managed to keep the game close with tries by Liam de Villiers (winger), Divan Nel (fullback) and replacement, Reuben van Hammersveld and Rigard van Rensburg (flyhalf) who also added five with a penalty and a conversion.

The Rusties still looked as dangerous as last weekend though, and they were able to capitalize on loose play, scoring four tries courtesy of Johan Retief (hooker), Carlo van Wijk (prop), MC Smit (winger) and JG Steenberg (Nr. 8).

Ultimately, it was the two conversions, the first taken by the flyhalf Duquan (Awie) Alberts and the second by the winger Lorenzo Snyers, that separated these two teams on the day.

This result sees Rustenburg go two from two, which is exactly the kind of start they would have wanted, Montana, on the other hand, will still take motivation from their improvement and look forward to their next fixture against Hugenote in Springs.

Middelburg and Zwartkop played in an exciting matchup which saw Middelburg emerge victorious by 25-12.

Zwartkop played with immense character, keeping the game relatively tight up to the 58th minute, with Wihan van der Berg (centre) and Stiaan Bekker (winger) managing to score.

Even after Middies seemed to have pulled away, committed Zwartkop defenders were still chasing down breaks and putting in try-saving tackles, never losing hope.

Van der Berg and fullback, Kieraan Krotz, and scrumhalf, Waldo Smit, all had great games, and are ones to keep an eye on for the rest of the season.

It was Middelburg, however, controlling the game, with flanker, Ronin van Niekerk and no. 8, Tjaart Joubert, causing a lot of trouble for the visitors in the breakdown, and flyhalf, Divan van der Westhuizen, maintaining the pressure with his excellent touch finders, two penalties and two conversions.

They were able to take the lead through a try by centre, Luke Geldenhuys, in the first half, and build on it in the second, when hooker, Funani Chauke, finished off a well-rehearsed lineout move.

It was Joubert, the big nr.8 who scored the final try of the match, picking the ball up at the back of a scrum and breaking around it with nobody to stop him in sight.

Die Anker proved to be too powerful for Hugenote, managing to get six tries against the visitors without a response.

Benton Giessing, their playmaker flyhalf, has now scored four tries in two matches and seems to be playing at the top of his game this year.

Defending champs, Noordheuwel, were simply too strong for Oosterlig, beating the visitors by 55-10.

The Oosterlig boys were overrun in the first half but also showed character to get their scrumhalf, Jaco du Toit, over the line in the second.

    Scorers:

Hoërskool Rustenburg 24 – Tries: Johan Retief, Carlo van Wijk, MC Smit, JG Steenberg. Conversions: Duquan Alberts, Lorenzo Snyers. Montana 20 – Tries: Liam de Villiers, Reuben van Hammersveld, Divan Nel. Conversion: Rigard van Rensburg. Penalty: Van Rensburg.

Hoërskool Middelburg 25 (13) – Tries: Fumani Chauke, Tjaart Joubert, Luke Geldenhuis. Conversions: Divan van der Westhuizen (2). Penalties: Van der Westhuizen (2). Zwartkop 12 (7) – Tries: Wihan van der Berg, Stiaan Bekker. Conversion: Crawford Joubert.

Die Anker 36 – Tries: Benton Giessing (2), Branden Crous, Divan du Plooy, Duhan du Plessis, Damien Muller. Conversions: Branden Crous (3). Hugenote 0.

Noordheuwel 55 – Tries: Janemo Luiters (3), Divan Cruywagen, Juan Fourie, Marshall de Vos, Jeandré de Villiers, Coun-Lee Koekman, Ludie Schutte. Conversions: JT Kapank (5). Oosterlig 10 – Try: Jaco du Toit. Conversion: Caiden Serfontein. Penalty: Serfontein.

  • Captain Xola Nyali leads Wynberg to emphatic victory against Duineveld

Captain Xola Nyali leads Wynberg to emphatic victory against Duineveld

NewsGBishopsWynberg Boys’ High scored eight unanswered tries to record an emphatic 59-0 victory against Duineveld on day two of the Wynberg Festival on Saturday.

The home side, who were playing their first match of the season in front of a packed crowd with a fairly inexperienced team dominated their opponents, showing intent from the get-go.

The forward pack, led by captain, Xola Nyali, was ruthless in attack and managed to get over the advantage line several times within the early exchanges. The scrums were also a noticeable weapon from the home side with tighthead prop, Aiden Reid, and loosehead, Leo Addinall, stamping their authority in that department.

In their pursuit of consistent domination, Wynberg scored 38 points in the first half, tries which were all converted by flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, and a penalty in the dying seconds of the half.

Firing in the first quarter, one would’ve thought that the hosts would drop the ball in the second half, however, Nic Groom‘s men kept their foot on the peddle, and despite scoring less, a further three tries from seasoned campaigner Amier Adams, accompanied by Matteo Pascoe, and Ahmed sealed the win for the home side.

In other fixtures on the day, Durbanville defeated HTS Bellville 55-0 in the first match of the day on a wet field after persistent rain the night before.

SACS was also in action taking on Hoërskool Bellville in another match which turned out to be one-sided. After a slow start, the boys from SACS came back to their senses, scoring nine tries against a disjointed Hoërskool Belville side.

Jack Benade was arguably the standout player, scoring a hattrick to help his side to a 59-14 win.

Rondebosch and Bishops also kicked off their seasons on a high with convincing victories against Windhoek Gimnasium and St Benedict’s respectively. Whereas Noord-Kaap claimed their third win of the season in a tightly contested affair against Milnerton.

Winger James Nero scored a hat-trick of tries as Hoërskool Durbanville eased past HTS Bellville by 54-0. Nero scored 32 tries for Durbies during the 2022 season and it seems that he will once again rack-up the tries in 2023.

    Scorers:

Wynberg Boys’ High 59 (38) – Tries: Xola Nyali (3), Ethan Thomas, Matthew Ould, Amier Adams, Matteo Pascoe, Nicholas van Schalkwyk, Yaqeen Ahmed. Conversions: Ahmed (6), Sange Mbuto. Duineveld 0.

  • Kwaggas and Nories in school rugby spectacle during Outeniqua’s Centenary Festival

Kwaggas and Nories in school rugby spectacle during Outeniqua’s Centenary Festival

The last quagga died in 1883, the Kwaggas of Hoërskool Outeniqua celebrates their centenary this year.

    Long live the Kwaggas!

Outeniqua’s First XV will face Hoërskool Noordheuwel of Krugersdorp in the main match of their Centenary Festival in George on Saturday. All the matches will be live-streamed via SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

If the event could even get more special it will be the first time that the Kwaggas would make use of their new change room which was build by old boy Ryno Gerber (2004) and one of the first team’s former coaches Eugene Viviers.

Gerber played tighthead prop for the Kwaggas when they was crowned national champions during Media 24’s competition (big schools) back in 2004. Viviers coached the Kwaggas during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Outeniqua are without a doubt contenders to be counted among the top five schoolboy rugby teams for the 2023 season. The pressure of representing their school during its centenary will however also weigh heavy on this team.

The Kwaggas opened their season last week with a comfortable victory of 59-6 over Parel Vallei.

Their clash against Noordheuwel promises to be an exciting encounter as the visitors with players like JT Kapank (flyhalf), Coun-Lee Koekman (scrumhalf) and Marshall de Vos (centre) in the backline prefer to run the ball.

The Kwaggas got a star studded team but the danger men are without a doubt JT Strydom (fullback), Jay Jay Daters (wing), Dewald Gerber (flanker) and Ruan Swart (prop).

Strydom represented the South African Schools A-side in 2022, while Swart played for the SA Schools’ side.

The home side would like to entertain their fans, but a victory will almost the non-negotiable on this special day. Nories are without a doubt honoured to be playing in the main match, but this won’t keep them from trying to spoil Outeniqua’s party.

In the main curtain raiser, Oakdale Landbou from Riversdal, will face Hoërskool Waterkloof of Pretoria. The Klofies have a point to prove this season as they were not invited to this year’s edition of the Wildeklawer-tournament.

The visitors from Pretoria would want to keep an eye on Oakdale’s left winger, Therlow Prins. He is quite dangerous with the ball in hand and if given too much space.

Grey High School and the Hoërskool Stellenberg will face each other for the first time ever on a rugby field.

The Jade Brigade’s pack of forwards with Herman Lubbe (prop), Damon Perreira and Marco Ferreira (both flankers) will bring a proper physical onslaught to the match.
