All the matches of the festival are being live-streamed via the SuperSportSchools platform.

The team of Alberton managed to secure an outright victory over Hoërskool Brackenfell in their time-cricket clash. Brakkies could only reach 47 before being bowled out thanks to a five-wicket haul by Nathan Coleske (5/13).

Marais Viljoen was able to declare their first innings at 332/5 thanks to half-centuries by Tristan van Scholburg (76), Sheldon van Wyk 60), Cayden Ramage (58*), and Tiaan du Toit (58).

Brakkies was once again bowled out cheaply in their second innings. In their total of 43 the only batsman who managed to reach double figures was a certain fella named Extras.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoër Jongenskool Paarl eerste beurt 369/4 (Johan Wege 182, Liam Vermeulen 69*, JJ van der Sandt 65, Christiaan Bourbon-Leftley 30; Nayleo Sanna 2/61); Hoërskool Garsfontein eerste beurt 314/8 (Ettienne du Toit 84, Xander Venter 65, Heinrich Cloete 61*, Deon van Huysteen 43, Dumisani Motswene 31; Christian Burger 3/74). Onbeslis.

Curro Durbanville eerste beurt 173 (Sean Dednam 50, Extras 31, Jarryd Laubscher 23*; Caleb Willemse 6/39, Malan Lubbe 3/26); JTG Cricket Association eerste beurt 93 (Benjamin Potgieter 33; Timmy Sampaya 3/17, Caleb Inglis 3/24, Jarryd Laubscher 2/14); JTG Cricket Association tweede beurt 103/4 (Motheo Kitchen 25, Caleb Willemse 23, Benjamin Potgieter 21*; Caleb Inglis 2/24). Curro Durbanville wen op eerste beurt.

Somerset College eerste beurt 135 (Extras 35, Buhle Mfunelwa 32, Johan Rauch 20*; Wiehan Miller 3/15, Francois Lourens 3/49, WK van der Merwe 2/7); Helpmekaar-kollege eerste beurt 111 (Ewald Haasbroek 59, Extras 23; Luke Rimmer 3/19, Troy Varie 3/20, Johan Rauch 2/28); Somerset College tweede beurt 62/5 (Buhle Mfunelwa 21; Xander Jackson 1/5); Helpmekaar-kollege tweede beurt 81/5 (Ewald Haasbroek 20, Xander Jackson 17*; David de Klerk 2/27, Owethu Moyi 2/31). Somerset College wen op eerste beurt.

  • Brooker, Stolk and Van der Merwe scores centuries in Bloemfontein

Brooker, Stolk and Van der Merwe scores centuries in Bloemfontein

The annual Grey Cricket Festival saw three centuries during the first day in Bloemfontein. The first round of matches during the festival is being played over two days in the time-cricket format.

The three centurions were Jaydon Brooker (Jeppe), Steve Stolk (Menlopark), and Diaan van der Merwe (Potchefstroom Volkskool). Some teams struggled a bit with the format while others embraced it.

It was without a doubt a great idea to introduce this two-day format into the annual festival.

All the matches of the festival are being live-streamed via the SuperSportSchools platform.

The hosts, Grey College, have their opponents Selborne College with their backs against the wall after the first day’s play.

Grey College was bowled out for 272 in their first innings with RJ Fourie (75) and Ricu van der Bergh (67) weighing in with half-centuries.

Selborne only managed 63 runs before being bundled out with Juan Viljoen (4/23) and Ian van der Merwe (3/8) troubling the batsmen from East London. Selborne will continue their second innings tomorrow at 19 without loss with Jared Nass (13) and Jacques van der Merwe (6*) at the crease.

Jeppe High School for Boys’ Jaydon Brooker (140) recorded a century as his side reached 245 in their match against St Andrews of Bloemfontein on Vossies Oval. Brooker faced 143 deliveries in his innings of which he dispatched 22 past the boundary rope of which one was a maximum.

Saints got bowled out for only 89 in their first innings and will continue their second innings at 11/0 tomorrow morning. Jeppe’s Jeremiah Marshall was the pick of his side’s bowling attack as he got rid of four batsmen for only 21 runs.

Menlopark declared their first innings closed at 305/9 against Glenwood High School with Steve Stolk (143) recording a massive century. Stolk faced 144 deliveries of which he struck 13 fours and six sixes.

Glenwood was 50/2 at the close of play.

Potchefstroom Volkskool‘s opening batsman Diaan van der Merwe (103*) helped to lay a solid foundation for his side to declare their first innings at 234/7 against Durban High School.

The latter were struggling at 49/6 at the close of play on Day 1. Kobus Pienaar (3/14) and Diwan Coetzee (2/1) caused them all sorts of problems.

Grey High School’s Jordan Strydom (86*) and Caleb Falconer (69*) will continue their third-wicket stand of 159 runs against King Edward VII in the morning. KES was restricted to 188 in their innings with Jordan Smith (75*) and Nhlanhla Mahlangu (40) providing the most resistance.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Grey College first innings 272 (RJ Fourie 75, Ricu van der Bergh 67, Sumu Lephoto 35, Armand Fourie 25, Casper Troskie 25; Thomas Marais 4/52, Bungqina Nuk 2/40, Ethan Currin 2/59); Selborne College first innings 63 (Ethan Currin 20; Juan Viljoen 4/23, Ian van der Merwe 3/8, Kumo Mokoen 2/2); Selborne College second innings 19/0 (Jared Nass 13*).

STELLENBOSCH. – The Southern Superstars ended the Central Gladiators’ unbeaten status on the third day of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week here.

This means that no team can boast with an unbeaten record at this year’s edition of the tournament and that the race for the title is still open.

The Superstars which consist of players from Western Province, Boland, and the Garden Route Badgers defeated the Gladiators by 144 runs.

It was the batting performances of Cormey van der Watt (71) and Bongile Mfunelwa (44*) which help the Superstars reach 246 runs. Mfunelwa was named the Player of the Tournament at the conclusion of last year’s Khaya Majola Week which was also hosted in Stellenbosch.

It was however the bowling performances of South African u19 fast bowler Liyema Qaqu (3/33) in tandem with Riley Norton (3/16) which restricted the Gladiators to a mere 102 runs.

It was only Dean Bacher (39) who managed to provide some resistance with the willow. He is the son of former Proteas opening batsman Adam Bacher.

The defending champions, the Coastal Conquerors, bagged their second victory of the tournament against the Eastern Warriors to keep their title hopes alive.

The Conquerors came out on top by four wickets with Ntando Zuma (121*) playing a starring role with his unbeaten century. Zuma struck 17 fours and two maximums in his innings.

The Warriors managed to set a target of 255 runs thanks to half-centuries by Jean Upman (70) and Tre Gilbert (61). Aryan Gopalan (3/42) was the pick of the Conquerors’ bowling attack.

The Northern Champions moved into the top position on the log thanks to a five-wicket victory over the Western Legends.

The Legends were restricted to 185 runs with Bathabile Mashigo (44) and GJ Maree (35) making the biggest contributions with the bat.

For the Champions it was Martin Khumalo (3/22) and Leo Sadler (2/21) who caused the most damage with the ball in hand.

The victors’ opening batsman Divan Engelbrecht (86) laid the foundation with his half-century with Bhamji Suleman (38) and Simele Maye (34) also adding valuable contributions.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Southern Superstars 246 (Cormey van der Watt 71, Bongile Mfunelwa 44*, Sange Mbuto 33, Juan James 30; Christoper King 3/37, Sipho Potsane 2/33, Tshepo Stafa 2/47, Kwena Maphaka 2/62); Central Gladiators 102 (Dean Bacher 39; Riley Norton 3/16, Liyema Waqu 3/33). Southern Superstars won by 144 runs.

Eastern Warriors 255 (Jean Upman 70, Tre Gilbert 61, Daniel Ristow 31, Russell Petersen 21, Extras 21; Aryan Gopalan 3/42, Nqobani Mokoena 2/24, Jake Carstens 2/49); Coastal Conquerors 261/6 (Ntando Zuma 121*, Jason Muirhead 37, Blake Simpson 30*, Khulekani Mseleku 30; Daniel Ristow 2/44). Coastal Conquerors won by four wickets.

Western Legends 185 (Bathabile Mashigo 44, GJ Maree 35, Sello Sesing 29, Corné Prinsloo 24; Martin Khumalo 3/22, Leo Sadler 2/21, Hernus Marais 2/30, William Tshoke 2/31); Northern Superstars 187/5 (Divan Engelbrecht 86, Bhamji Suleman 38, Simele Maye 34; Joe Meyer 1/12). Northern Champions won by five wickets.

STELLENBOSCH. – Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week is without a doubt one of the toughest tournaments at u19 level.

After only two days at this year’s edition of the tournament, only one side is left with their unbeaten record intact, the Central Gladiators.

The tournament’s title could once again be settled during the final day of the week if one of the other teams ends the Gladiators’ unbeaten status within the next two days.

The Gladiators defeated the Northern Champions by six wickets thanks to half-centuries by David Teeger (72) and Richard Seletswane (63*) which laid the foundation.

The duo shared a partnership of 137 runs over the third wicket. Not even another stellar bowling performance by Leo Sadler (4/51) could keep the Gladiators from securing the victory.

Sadler finished the second day in a row with the best bowling figures at the tournament.

The Champions started off well with Christiaan du Toit (55) and Divan Engelbrecht who shared a 101-run partnership over the second wicket.

The team however stumbled to 125/5 after their solid base.

The Western Legends would be forgiven if they thought that their massive total of 315/5 in their allotted 50 overs would’ve been enough to secure a victory over defending champions, Coastal Conquerors.

Even more so after the Conquerors were in deep trouble at 94/5. It was however then that Romashen Pillay (163) and Blake Simpson (59) joined forces to share a 129-run partnership over the sixth wicket.

Pillay’s innings are the third-highest score ever at the Cubs Week since the inaugural tournament back in 2009. He was the star as his side bagged a one-wicket victory.

Pillay faced only 126 deliveries in his innings which included 15 boundaries of which six were maximums.

The Legends’ Joe Meyer (91) and GJ Maree (37) shared a partnership of 106 runs over the second wicket. This laid the foundation for the Legends to set the target past 300 runs.

Corné Prinsloo (68*) also weighed in with an unbeaten half-century.

The Southern Superstars are back to winning ways after defeating the Eastern Warriors by 49 runs.

The Superstars reached 292/9 in their allotted overs thanks to half-centuries by Gysbert Wege (69) and Raees Salie (58).

The Warriors’ Jean Upman produced an allround performance with bat and ball. He was the pick of his side’s bowling attack with figures of 2/35.

He was also the top-run scorer for his team as he added a valuable 87 runs.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Western Legends 315/5 (Joe Meyer 91, Corné Prinsloo 68*, Naziel Adams 45, GJ Maree 37, Sello Sesing 28, Rico Fryer 22*; Jake Carstens 2/39, Aryan Gopalan 2/57); Coastal Conquerors 316/9 (Romashan Pillay 163, Blake Simpson 59, Jonathan van Zyl 35, Extras 20; Naziel Adams 2/25, Rico Fryer 2/36, Darion Rabie 2/43, Corné Prinsloo 2/45). Coastal Conquerors won by one wicket.

Southern Superstars 292/9 (Gysbert Wege 69, Raees Salie 58, Abdullah Bayoumy 31, Riley Norton 29, Extras 27, Bongile Mfunelwa 24, Juan James 21; Jean Upman 2/35, Olwakhe Goqorza 2/42, Esa Gangat 2/60); Eastern Warriors 243 (Jean Upman 87, Tre Gilbert 46, Olwakhe Goqorza 32, Russell Petersen 28; Riley Norton 3/30, Juan James 2/52, Abdullah Bayoumy 2/55). Southern Superstars won by 49 runs.

Northern Champions 231 (Christiaan du Toit 55, Divan Engelbrecht 37, Extras 36, Dewan Marais 35, Leo Sadler 29; Christopher King 3/28, Sipho Potsane 2/42, Dean Bacher 2/56); Central Gladiators 232/4 (David Teeger 72, Richard Seletswane 63*, Lhuandré Pretorius 40, Extras 29; Leo Sadler 4/51). The defending champions of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week, the Coastal Conquerors, found themselves on the receiving end of Lhuandré Pretorius’ bat on the opening day of this year’s edition on Stellenbosch.

Pretorius (126*), opening batsman of the Central Gladiators, led his side’s charge with an unbeaten century. He got the Gladiators past the target with a thundering four with five wickets still in hand.

He faced 156 deliveries in his innings of which he dispatched 14 for boundaries along the ground. Pretorius received some excellent support from Reuben du Toit (52) and Richard Seletswane (34). Du Toit played a vital role as he faced only 40 deliveries for his half-century.

The Conquerors struggled to get their innings going until Jake Carstens (59*) and Ross Boast (52) joined forces for a partnership of 99 runs over the eighth wicket.

The hosts, the Southern Superstars’, chances to bag this year’s title also received a knock thanks to a 70-run defeat against the Northern Champions.

The Champions probably boasts one of the most dangerous bowling attacks in action during the Cubs Week with Hernus Marais, Tristan Luus, and Leo Sadler leading the attack.

Sadler finished the day with the best bowling figures as he removed four batsmen for a mere 27 runs. Marais (3/31) also made sure the Superstars’ batsmen were never at ease.

Sadler also added a valuable contribution of 32 runs with the bat. Shelton Ngobeni (81) and Dewan Marais (56) helped the Champions to reach 273 with their half-centuries.

The Western Legends also kicked off their week in Stellenbosch with a victory. They defeated the Eastern Warriors by 13 runs.

The Warriors’ Daniel Ristow (88*) ran out of batting partners and if someone could stay in the middle with him – he probably could’ve gotten his side past the target.

Legends’ left-handed opening batsman, Ludwich Schuld (57), started out his week with a half-century as he has done last year during the Khaya Majola Week.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Coastal Conquerors 255/9 (Jake Carstens 59*, Ross Boast 52, Aryan Gopalan 37, Ntando Zuma 29, Jason Muirhead 24; David Teeger 3/33, Kyle Glennistor 2/47, Christopher King 2/58); Central Gladiators 258/5 (Lhuandré Pretorius 126*, Reuben du Toit 52, Richard Seletswane 34; Thabiso Ndlela 4/64).
