Hilton College bags another double against Michaelhouse

Hilton College bagged a 23-15 victory over their arch-rivals Michaelhouse at Meadows to record the double for 2022.

Hilton, whos celebrating its 150th anniversary, also finishes the 2022-season as the top schools team in KwaZulu-Natal. The side of 2022 only lost one match during the season a 5-14 defeat against Paarl Boys’ High during the St. John’s College Easter Festival in Johannesburg.

Michaelhouse will have to wait another year for that elusive 100th victory in this interschool in the KZN Midlands. The first match between these two schools was played in 1904. The team from Balgowan’s last triumph and 99th over Hilton was a 21-17 victory in 2016.

Hilton’s victory at the Meadows was their 95th in the clash that has been played 205 times. Ten of the clashes ended in a draw.

Lock Jack Waterhouse sliced like a centre through the defense to score Hilton’s first try of the match four minutes before half-time to take his side to a 13-7 lead.

Hilton initially took the lead thanks to two penalties by flyhalf, Christopher Horak. After a converted try by Fortune Mpofu it seemed that Michaelhouse would take a 7-6 lead into the break.

The try by Waterhouse however swung the momentum of the match into the visitors’ favour. Just before halftime Hilton’s tighthead prop, Nicholas Snyman, powered his way over the try-line from a tap-penalty five metres away to give his side a 20-7 lead at the break.

Winger Kevin Smith scored in the corner from the last movement of the match. This try meant that both teams scored three tries in the match, with the accurate boot of Horak being the difference.

Horak converted all three of his side’s tries while also slotting three penalties. He is the son of former English fullback, Michael Horak.

  • Monnas stamp Waterkloof in laaste Noordvaal-wedstryd voor vakansie

Monnas stamp Waterkloof in laaste Noordvaal-wedstryd voor vakansie

    Puntemakers:

Monument 64 (26) – Driee: Jan Botes (2), Keano Ebersohn, Zain Henery, Marcey de Waal, Jody Schambreel, HJ de Beer, Sifiso Magwaza, Conrad Sevenster, Christi Botes. Doelskoppe: Tyler Sefoor (7). Waterkloof 17 (10) – Driee: Guillaume Marais, Happy Mokate. Doelskoppe: Thorn Bester (2). Strafdoel: Bester.

  • Craven Week makes a comeback after two years

Craven Week makes a comeback after two years

It’s official after a break of two years we will once again have a Craven Week this year.

This year’s edition of the prestigious rugby week for u18 players will be hosted by Rondebosch Boys’ High from 4 to 9 July in Cape Town. It will be the first time since 1967 that Cape Town will play host to the tournament.

The tournament of 1967 was played at Newlands. The inaugural Craven Week was hosted in 1964 in East London. The Craven Week was however hosted in the Western Cape a couple of times since 1967 with Stellenbosch (1973, 1980, 1996, 2007, 2015), Paarl (1987, 2018), Worcester (1981), and Wellington (2003) all hosting the premier schools’ rugby festival in the world.

It will be the first tournament since it was hosted in 2019 at Grey College in Bloemfontein. The tournament was forced to take a break for two years (2020 and 2021) due to the restrictions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic in South Africa.

Western Province faced the Blue Bulls in the main match of the 2019 edition of the tournament. They were crowned unofficial champions after coming out on top by 56-31 in the clash. Province’s flyhalf, Kade Wolhuter, finished the tournament as the top scorer with 50 points after also contributing 16 points to their victory in the main match.

His scrumhalf, Dylan “Bobby” Alexander, was named the Player of the Tournament. The Craven Week was to be hosted in Port Elizabeth in 2020 and in Krugersdorp in 2021.
