  • Le Maitre beëindig Liggies onoorwonne rekord in laaste 20 PUK-Prestige wedstryde

    Puntemakers:

Marais Viljoen 14 (7) – Drieë: Renaldo Turner, Rehan le Maitre. Doelskoppe: Le Maitre (2). Lichtenburg 13 (8) – Drieë: Wimpie Venter (2). Strafdoel: Francois Swanepoel.

Potchefstroom Volkskool 27 – Drieë: Andriaan Taute, Wikus Marais, Dion Bezuidenhout, Brian Bennet, Janco Joubert. Doelskop: Muller Steenkamp. HTS Witbank 17 – Drieë: Inus Truter, Sipho Nkosi, Zander Marx. Doelskop: Franco Horn.

  • SA U19s clinch thrilling first win in Youth ODI series

NewsGMarcoJansenThe Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s overcame Afghanistan under-19s in an exciting nine-run victory in their third match of the Youth One-Day International (ODI) Quadrangular Series in Trivandrum on Saturday. The triumph is the first for the visitors, on the tour of the subcontinent.

Marco Jansen produced a superb return of 4/23 inspiring the youngsters to an impressive display with the ball and restricting their opponents to 191 in the penultimate over despite Farhan Khan’s half-century. This was after Bryce Parsons (40), Luke Beaufort (40) and Andile Mogakane (38) helped South Africa to 200 all out in 49.5 overs.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Parsons and Beaufort combined for a 57-run, fourth-wicket partnership that helped rebuild the South African innings following a trio of early wickets.

Despite suffering a middle-order collapse at the hands of Reyaz Hassan (3/26) and Shafiqullah Ghafari (2/24), Mogakane found reliable lower-order partners in Achille Cloete (10) and Kgaudise Molefe (13) to propel their side from 165/8 to a competitive total.

Arif Dawlatzai (2/39), Abid Mohammadi (2/29) and Fazal Farooqi (1/45) were the other wicket-takers for the Afghanistan outfit.

Tasked with defending their highest score of the tour thus far, the Matthew Montgomery-led side bowled well up front to restrict the scoring rate. Cloete (2/45) claimed two early wickets, while Jansen picked up one of his own to leave Afghanistan on 29/3 after 6.3 overs. Khan and Hassan then put on 88 runs for the fourth-wicket, shifting the momentum in their favour and helping them to 117/3 before the latter was dismissed for 35 by Nonelela Yikha (1/46).

Afghanistan’s captain went on to reach a deserved fifty, recording 63 off 95 balls (4 fours, 1 six) before Player of the Match, Bryce Parsons made further inroads in the middle period. The bowler removed Khan and then followed it up with the scalp of Dawlatzai (18).

Those two strikes looked to have slowed down the Afghanistan batsmen, with more good bowling from South Africa’s attack ensuring the contest goes the distance before Jansen then took it upon himself to grab the match by the scruff. The tall left-arm seamer added three more wickets to his name, including two in the 49th over, following a run-out by Molefe in the previous one to seal the hard-fought result after his side defended 36 off the last 10 overs.

Scorecards can be located on www.cricinfo.com. The South Africans will take on Afghanistan U19s in Monday’s, (11 March) third-place playoff at the St Xavier’s Cricket Ground. India U19s ‘A’ will compete against their ‘B’ side in the Youth ODI Quadrangular series final after the latter stunned their opponents in the final round-robin clash on Saturday by three wickets.

    Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s squad:

Matthew Montgomery (captain, Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Luke Beaufort (Warriors), Jonathan Bird (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Achille Cloete (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Jarred Jardine (bizhub Highveld Lions), Marco Jansen (bizhub Highveld Lions), Thamsanqa Kumalo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Bonga Makaka (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Andile Mogakane (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Kgaudise Molefe (bizhub Highveld Lions), Lifa Ntanzi (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Bryce Parsons (bizhub Highveld Lions), Siya Plaatjie (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Ruan Terblanche (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Nonelela Yikha (Warriors).

  • Defending Champions St Andrews School qualify for the National T20 Final

Defending Champions St Andrews School qualify for the National T20 Final

NewsGRikusAllenSt Andrews School, situated in Bloemfontein, stand the chance of defending their title at the Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge. This is after they won their franchise final after beating Northern Cape High School at St Andrews.

St Andrews won the toss and decided to bat first. They got off to a very quick start with Henre Koekemoer hitting Austin Brooker for two fours and a six from the first three balls that he faced. Austin Brooker got his own back when he bowled his man with the next ball.

St Andrews continued to score freely and even though they lost 5 wickets it didn’t deter them. Rikus Allen 27, Corne Viljoen 61 and Reeza Alexander 31*, one of the Coca-Cola® All-Star players from last year, all contributed to help St Andrews to a mammoth total of 193/5.

Northern Cape’s chase was insufficient to give them a favourable result. They lost wickets at regular intervals apart from Naziel Adams who scored 20. Last year’s Coca-Cola All-Star player, Reeza Alexander, used some of his skills that he learnt from his experience to take 4/13 against his old school. He was well assisted by Ruan Cronje 3/15 and Pheko Moletsane 2/13.

Austin Brooker and Naziel Adams were selected from Northern Cape to form part of the Coca-Cola® All-Star team. They were selected because of their unwavering determination even when their team was being beaten. These players will get an opportunity to meet the other qualifying teams, have coaching sessions with Paul Harris and play against a Cricket South Africa selection side as a curtain raiser to the final of the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge.

St Andrews School will represent the VKB Knights and will join the other five franchises winners and the two schools that qualified through the CSA Focus School programme at the competition’s National Finals at the University of Pretoria from the 15th to 17th March.

    Summarised Scorecard:

St Andrews 193/5 (Corné Viljoen 61, Rikus Allen 27, Reeza Alexander 31*, Austin Brooker 3/35); Northern Cape 61 all out (Naziel Adams 20, Reeza Alexander 4/13, Ruan Cronjé 3/15, Pheko Moletsane 2/13). St Andrews won by 133 runs.

  • Hat-trick of titles for SA u18 at the Capricorn 7’s in Windhoek

Hat-trick of titles for SA u18 at the Capricorn 7’s in Windhoek

SAo.18SewesThe South African u18 Sevens team once again had no match to retain their title as champions of the Capricorn Sevens tournament hosted in Windhoek, Namibia. The South Africans eased past Germany by 28-5 in the final of the tournament.

Saru might need to relook their participation at this tournament. Our national u18 team could gain more value from attending a tournament where they will be tested thoroughly than thrashing their opponents from start to finish.

Entering, for example, the annual Dubai Sevens’ u19 tournament will provide the team with more resistance. Budget constraints will, however, play a major role in the decision where the national team show-off their talents.

This is not to rain on the SA u18 Sevens parade, but it surely will aid their development as players more if they attended a tournament where they play against opposition that will be able to give them stiffer opposition.

Tiaan Pretorius of Paul Roos Gimnasium captained the SA u18-side to their third successive title in Windhoek. They cruised past the Barbarians (41-0), Zimbabwe (57-5) and Namibia (35-0) on the opening day in Windhoek.

On Saturday they also eased past Germany (54-5) who they also met in the final.

The South Africans almost wrote a world record behind their name during their final pool match against Botswana. They smashed their neighbours from up-north by 91-0. The biggest ever victory in sevens was recorded during the Commonwealth Games of 1998 when New Zealand defeated the Bahamas by 93-0.

    The team was:

Tiaan Pretorius (Paul Roos Gimnasium, captain), Walter Visser (Ermelo), Siviwe Zondani (Grey High School), Janco Cloete (Grey College), Renzo du Plessis (Ben Vorster), Hlumelo Klaas (Grey High School), Latica Nela (Hilton College), Nico Steyn (Glenwood), Sacha Mngomezulu (Bishops), Henco van Wyk (Monument), Danvon Blood (Rondebosch Boys’ High), Curwin Gertse (Paarl Gimnasium), Javier Farmer (Paarl Boys’ High).

  • Paarl Gimnasium win to represent Cobras in Schools T20 National Finals

Paarl Gimnasium win to represent Cobras in Schools T20 National Finals

NewsGJhedliBriesiesPaarl Gimnasium beat South Africa College High School (SACS) and Langenhoven Gimnasium at the Cobras franchise final of the Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge. The Cobras franchise consists of three unions Western Province, Boland and South Western Districts. The franchise final took place in a round robin tournament format.

Paarl Gimnasium played against SWD representative, Langenhoven Gimnasium, in the first match of the day. The Paarl bowlers put a lot of pressure on the Langenhoven Gimnasium batsmen and managed to bowl them out for 65. The pick of the bowlers was Juan Wilson 3/9, Pieter Rossouw 2/6 and Bradley Davids 2/8. Paarl took no time to knock off the runs to win by 9 wickets. Jandre Burger scored 37 runs before being bowled by Jaden Dyssel.

The second match of the day was between Langenhoven Gimnasium and South Africa College High School (SACS). SACS won the toss and sent Langenhoven in to bat. Langenhoven Gimnasium batted better than in their previous match but were still not able to convincingly put SACS under pressure.

Langenhoven Gimnasium scored 93 for 7 in their 20 overs with Matthew Klusener being the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 15 runs. SACS chased the total down for the loss of 2 wickets in the 14th over Daniel Smith was not out for 46 runs and Michael Levitt scored 41 runs.

The final match of the day was between Paarl Gimnasium and SACS where the winner of the match would be the Cobras champions and subsequent franchise representative. Paarl Gimnasium won the toss and sent SACS in to bat.

Paarl Gimnasium captain, Johan Smal, knew how important it was to win the toss, “We knew that SACS is a team that is good at chasing down totals so we sent them in to bat to put them out of their comfort zone and see if we can control them to a reasonable total.”

SACS got off to a great start and after 10 overs they were on 82/2 and they looked like they could go on to hit a massive total. However, Paarl Gimnasium improved their game and took wickets on a frequent basis reducing SACS to 149/8 in their allotted 20 overs. SACS only managed to score 69 runs and they lost 6 wickets in the final 10 overs.

Paarl Gimnasium batted sensibly in their run chase and were ahead of the run rate from the first over of the day. Even though they lost a couple of wickets they were never in trouble eventually winning by 8 wickets with 4 balls to spare. Once again Jandre Burger, 73 not out, was the pick of the batsmen. He batted throughout the innings and marshalled his team to victory.

SACS opening bowler Anda Dilima and Langenhoven Gimnasium wicketkeeper Jedhli Van Briesies were selected and will form part of the Coca-Cola® All-Star team that will play at the National Finals in Pretoria. These players will get an opportunity to meet the other qualifying teams, have coaching sessions with Paul Harris and play against a Cricket South Africa selection side as a curtain raiser to the final of the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge.

Paarl Gimnasium will represent the Cobras and will join the other five franchises winners and the two schools that qualified through the CSA Focus School programme at the competition’s National Finals at the University of Pretoria from the 15th to 17th March.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Langenhoven Gim 65 all out (Juan Wilson 3/9, Pieter Rossouw 2/6, Bradley Davids 2/8) vs Paarl Gimnasium 67/1 (Jandre Burger 37). Paarl Gim won by 9 wickets.

Langenhoven Gim 93/7 (Matthew Klusener 2/15) vs SACS 94/2 (Daniel Smith 46*)
    SACS won by 8 wickets

SACS 149/8 (Michael Levitt 45, Daniel Smith 30, Jandre Burger 2/14) vs Paarl Gimnasium 154/2 (Jandre Burger 73*)
    Paarl won by 8 wickets

  • SA Under-18 Sevens excited for Windhoek Challenge

MariusSchoemanThe South African Under-18 Sevens team is excited to take to the field in the Capricorn Group Sevens Rugby Tournament in Windhoek on Friday and Saturday, with their sights set on defending the title they won for the last three seasons.

The team, which is being guided by coach Marius Schoeman, will kick off the competition against the Barbarians on Friday before lining up against Zimbabwe and Namibia in their other pool fixtures on the opening day.

They will face Germany and Botswana in their remaining pool games on Saturday, which will be followed immediately by the final stages.

The team touched down in Windhoek on Wednesday and wasted no time getting down to business, as they had their first field session later in the day.

“We met in Windhoek for the first time, and it was pleasing to see the excitement among the players,” said Schoeman. “We had our first training session in the afternoon, and as luck would have it, it rained as soon as we took to the field. But it was nevertheless a good session.

“That said, there is a lot of work to do to reach the level at which we would like to be by the time we take to the field.

“We have another training session this morning and the guys are looking fresh and ready to go.”

Schoeman said the tournament would serve as a valuable development opportunity for the players and he was excited to see them showcase their talent against some of the best junior players from the participating countries.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the players to get a taste of international rugby, while it is also a great tournament for the development of Sevens rugby in Africa,” said Schoeman. “With the likes of Namibia, Botswana and Namibia participating, as well as a country like Germany, we are expecting a thrilling tournament.

“We have some exciting talent in our group, and most of the players are Under-17’s, so this is part of a good building process.

“I am excited to see them in action, especially with this being the first time some of them are in the Sevens environment, and it will be equally exciting for them.”

Schoeman was forced to make a late change to his squad this week, with Walter Visser replacing Christiaan Smit, who was ruled out due to a hamstring injury, but with his older brother being Springbok Sevens player, Impi Visser, the Ermelo High School pupil will look to put some of the guidance he has received into practice on the field.

Tiaan Pretorius will captain the side, and he too has deep rugby roots, because apart from his father being a former Cats and Pumas player Torros Pretorius, and is also family of former Springbok Sevens star Kwagga Smith, who is now plying his trade at the Emirates Lions.
