BLOEMFONTEIN.

  • Gauteng clinches Khaya Majola Week title with dominant nine-wicket victory

Gauteng clinches Khaya Majola Week title with dominant nine-wicket victory

    Liam Basson of Boland

BLOEMFONTEIN – In the end, Gauteng simply had too much firepower for the Tuskers in the final of the annual Khaya Majola Cricket Week (for u19 teams) here.

Gauteng secured a convincing nine-wicket victory, ensuring that the union walked away with the honours for the sixth time in the past ten years.

Two of the champions’ South African u19 players, Jason Rowles (76*) and Armaan Manack (38*), guided their team over the final hurdle with an unbeaten 114-run partnership for the second wicket.

The two St David’s Marist Inanda learners are expected to be key players for the national team at next year’s u19 World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Rowles was particularly destructive at the Johan Volsteedt Oval. He faced only 34 deliveries in his innings, smashing 14 boundaries, including four sixes over the ropes for the first time.

The Tuskers, who batted first, were in deep trouble at 68/6 after just 21.1 overs. SA u19 fast bowler Corné Botha removed three batsmen for only 24 runs.

Four of the matches on the final day ended without a result, as all games were interrupted several times after lunch due to weather.

The Titans‘ opening batsman, Reuben van Zyl, finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 352 runs. He recorded two centuries during the week – 110 against Western Province and 166 against Free State.

Van Zyl scored his runs at an average of 70.4 per innings.

This year again saw a large number of centuries in the City of Roses. In total, there were 12 centuries, while the record for the most centuries in a Khaya Majola Week was set in 2016 in this very city with 15.

The Garden Route Badgers defeated Limpopo by six wickets. The winning team’s Liviwe Bawulie (5/36) led the charge with only the second five-wicket haul of the tournament.

Easterns’ spinner Abdullah Tadwala was the most successful bowler, claiming 13 wickets at an average of 16.6 runs per dismissal.

Two other spinners, Enathi Kitshini (Garden Route Badgers) and Nathan Baird (Northern Cape), as well as seam bowler Taywin Adams (Boland), each took 12 wickets in the City of Roses.

BLOEMFONTEIN – A new champion will be crowned this year at the annual Khaya Majola Cricket Week (for u19 players).

The Tuskers have, for the first time since 2022, managed to reach the main match of the week. The team from KwaZulu-Natal Inland defeated the defending champions, Western Province, by six wickets in the semi-final at the Johan Volsteedt Oval.

WP batted first and were bowled out for 174 thanks to excellent bowling by Rowen Rajah (3/48), Sechaba Gude (2/11), and Samuel Hughes (2/27).

The Tuskers’ Ben Hockly (58) led his team’s charge with another fine innings. This pushed his tournament total to 229 runs at an average of 76.3.

Gauteng will face the Tuskers in the final. The team won its semi-final against the Titans by 36 runs.

Ombesa Matsha (93) and Armaan Manack (61) laid the foundation for their team with a 113-run partnership for the second wicket, enabling them to post 291/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

Manack’s brother, Morteza (56), also scored a half-century before taking two wickets for just 31 runs. However, the best bowling performances for the winning team came from Jason Rowles (3/41) and Tahseen Hanslo (3/42).

The Titans‘ opening batsman, Reuben van Zyl (64), smashed his runs off just 39 deliveries before Hanslo rearranged his stumps. Had Van Zyl managed to score his third consecutive century in the City of Roses, the Titans would likely have played in the final.

Van Zyl boasts 350 runs in his team’s four matches so far in the tournament.

Eastern Province will face North West on the last day of the tournament in a promotion/relegation clash. The team from the Eastern Cape lost by 26 runs to Boland.

Boland’s Gideon du Toit (73*) remained unbeaten, while Luca Plekker (54) and Liam Basson (47) helped their team post 264/7 in their 50 overs.

EP’s Randy Syce (87) continued his fine form with the bat, but Taywin Adams (4/28) and Ryall Julies (2/20) caused havoc among his teammates.

North West’s Eduard Dreyer (151) scored the only century of the fourth day against Mpumalanga. The opener struck 16 fours and smashed three sixes over the boundary rope.

Mpumalanga were bowled out for 111, with Omphile Rangwaga (4/12) standing on a perfect hat-trick after dismissing Zeeshan Ebrahim (0) and Xavier Visagie (0) with the last two deliveries of the 26th over.

He had also removed Gavin Genis (12) with the first delivery of that over. Other bad news for EP is that South African u19 fast bowler Carl Fryer (2/10) is clearly firing on all cylinders.

SA Schools cruises to win over SA Fillies

The SA Schools girls’ u19 team recorded a comfortable 31-run win over the SA Fillies in a T20 match on the last day of the CSA Girls u19 Week, at the JB Marks Oval, in Potchefstroom, on Friday.

The toss went the Fillies’ way, and their captain, Mpumelelo Mashiloane, opted to field first. SA Schools responded with 122/8 from their 20 overs. That proved to be enough, with the SA Fillies being limited to 91/6 in reply.

Simoné Lourens, with a quickfire 19 off 11 balls, and Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout, with 34 off 26, got SA Schools going with a rapid 37-run opening partnership in less than four overs.

Captain Mieke van Voorst replaced Lourens and weighed in with 26 from 23 deliveries. She also shared a 29-run second-wicket stand with Bezuidenhout, who departed when there were 66 runs on the board.

The SA Fillies fought back strongly, picking up three wickets for three runs in seven balls. Enkosi Mditshwa set the collapse in motion with Bezuidenhout’s dismissal in the eighth over before Thembakazi Gegesi accounted for Rethabile Nthoba and Fay Cowling in the space of three deliveries.

SA Schools struggled to recover after that, but Murisi Rikhotso, who scored an unbeaten 15 from 14 balls, helped the side to finish strongly., having batted at just over six runs an over.

In reply, the SA Fillies stumbled out of the blocks. They lost opener Maria van der Vyver in the second over, trapped LBW by Respect Mabasa. Soon, The Fillies were on the back foot. By the end of the powerplay, they were in serious trouble on 25/5.

Fay Cowling put the skids under the SA Filliers with a double-strike in the seventh over, which accounted for Mashiloane and Diedré van Rensburg. That forced their batters into a more conservative approach, and they were kept in check and restricted to below 100 runs.

Mi-Jeanne Botha top-scored for the SA Fillies with a cautious unbeaten 33 from 50 balls. Enkosi Mditshwa and Ashley Barnard were the only other Fillies’ batters to reach double figures, with Mditshwa making 15 runs from 21 deliveries and Barnard scoring 12 off 13.

Cowling was the pick of the SA Schools’ attack, capturing 3/18 from four overs.

    Summarised Scorecard

SA Schools 122/8 (Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout 34, Mieke van Voorst 26, Simoné Lourens 19; Imaan van Schalkwyk 2/12, Thembakazi Gegesi 2/20). Fillies 91/6 (Mi-Jeanne Botha 33*, Enkosi Mditshwa 15; Fay Cowling 3/18, Ziya Mohanlall 1/5). SA Schools won by 31 runs.

SA Rugby confirmed on Friday that former Springbok lock Barend Pieterse had been appointed as a lineout and breakdown consultant to the Junior Springbok team for three years.

The 46-year-old Pieterse, who appeared for the Lions, Cheetahs, and Eastern Province in his playing days, fills the role previously taken by Johann Ackermann and will provide support to Junior Bok forwards’ coach Lumumba Currie.

Pieterse played one match for the Springboks, against the Barbarians in 2007. He joins from the Lions, where he was employed as a forwards coach. In 2023, he travelled with Namibia to the Rugby World Cup in France as an assistant coach.

“Barend comes highly rated, as well as having previously worked with many of the staff in the Junior Springbok system, so there is a natural fit,” said Dave Wessels, General Manager, High Performance at SA Rugby.

Ackers (Johan Ackermann) provided valuable expertise in 2025, and we’re sure that Barend will provide the same in 2026.”

Pieterse will join the Junior Boks’ training squad in camp in Stellenbosch in the new year as they begin their 2026 campaign.

The squad travels to snowy Georgia in February for a series of matches before SANZAAR‘s u20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha, in April and May.

The team will defend their World Rugby u20 Championship title in Georgia in June and July.

Mieke van Voorst was crowned the Cricketer of the Week for her exploits at the CSA Girls u19 Week in Potchefstroom, which ended on Thursday, and will captain a star-studded SA Schools team.

The Eastern Storm star was the only batter to record a century in the 50-over section of matches, which she finished as the highest run-getter.

She was also among the top run-scorers in the four T20 games, finishing fourth on the list.

Those performances earned her the Batter of the Tournament and the All-rounder of the Tournament accolades in the Platinum section.

Despite the Eastern Storm compiling an unbeaten record, Van Voorst is the only player from the side to make the 12-member SA Schools side. Four other provinces – Mpumalanga, The Titans, Free State, and North West – have a single player each in the team.

Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout, who claimed the Batter of the Tournament award in the Gold section, represents Mpumalanga, while Simoné Lourens, Kamogelo Kgaswane, and Rethabile Nthoba fly the flags for The Titans, Free State, and North West, respectively.

Limpopo’s Murisi Rikhotso, who took home the Bowler of the Tournament gong in the Platinum section, is one of two bowlers from Limpopo to be named in the SA Schools team. The other is Respect Mabasa.

Ziya Mohanlall, who was named the Bowler of the Tournament in the Gold section, is one of two Dolphins’ players in the SA Schools team, where she is joined by top-order batter, Shreeya Subbiah.

The Lions have the most representatives with three players – Fay Cowling, Leani Swanepoel, and Diara Ramlakan – earning selection.

Kei’s Enkosi Mditshwa was named the All-rounder of the Tournament in the Gold section and is one of 12 players picked for the Fillies team. Her Kei teammate Thembakazi Gegesi has also been included in the side.

Boland, Western Province, the SWD Garden Route Badgers, North West, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape Iinyathi, and The Dolphins have a player each in the Fillies’ line-up. They are represented by Maria van der Vyver, Imaan van Schalkwyk, Mi-Jeanne Botha, Deidré van Rensburg, Ashley Barnard, Malakhiwe Somhlahlo, and Ziyanda Xulu respectively.

The Eastern Storm has the greatest representation in the Fillies’ squad, with Mpumelelo Mashiloane, Tamzyn Hartman, and Ashleigh van Wyk all cracking the nod.

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned the champions of the second u17 Confederation of African Football (Caf) Girls Integrated Football Tournament (GIFT) after beating Lishoeshoe 5-0 from Lesotho in the final on Thursday at the Ngoni Stadium, in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The inaugural edition was won by Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JTK) Queens, from Tanzania, who were crowned the champions when the tournament was hosted in the Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) region in January.

The second edition of the tournament welcomed teams from the Cosafa region, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Refilwe, both from South Africa, and playing in the Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL), participating.

However, the spotlight was on Banyana Ba Style, the GWDL champions, who excelled in the GIFT competition from the outset. They finished at the top of Group A with the maximum possible of nine points to secure a place in the final against Lishoeshoe, who won Group B, also with nine points.

In the final match, the mighty ‘Downs‘ demonstrated their prowess by powering their way to a 5-0 victory.

Captain Katlego Malebana opened the scoring just three minutes into the match by converting a penalty. Nsovo Nxumalo then increased the Brazilians‘ advantage.

Busisiwe Mokoena, Lesego Tsatsi, and Roshina Nair contributed the final three goals as the South African champions decisively defeated their neighbours.

Over the course of their four matches, Mamelodi Sundowns fired in 30 goals while allowing only one goal, which showcased both their exceptional offensive capabilities and their superior defensive line.

After the final, Munashe Mugwara, one of the standout players for Sundowns throughout the tournament, was named the Player of the Tournament.

The Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade was awarded to Mercy Mwale from Zambia’s Aguila Girls, while the Golden Boot honour was shared by Tamandani Chilimba, of Luwinga Academy, and Nancy Lebang, of Okakarara Golden Ladies, both of whom netted eight goals.

The Fair Play award was presented to the silver medallists, Lishoeshoe.

In the bronze medal match, Zimbabwe’s Mpopoma Sports Academy secured third place by defeating Aguila Girls 4-1.

Shantel Gwenhamo struck the Bulawayo team’s first goal. Chiedza Khumalo netted twice to end the tournament with seven goals and Rejoice Chamunorwa added Mpopoma’s fourth.

Beatrice Chipupula scored the lone goal for the Zambian team.

The tournament was goal-laden, with 118 scored in only 16 matches – over seven per game.

The CAF GIFT u17 tournament was launched to enable international competition between top u17 club teams in the region, thereby complementing existing events for national teams.

The CAF has prioritised the advancement of women’s football as a fundamental aspect of its development agenda, with the GIFT tournament offering young players a valuable opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and acquire essential experience.

Simoné Lourens and Maria van der Vyver scored half-centuries to help The Titans and Boland secure wins in their final matches at the CSA Girls u19 Week, on Thursday, in Potchefstroom.

Lourens finished as the top run-scorer in the T20s, while Van der Vyver was third on the list of run-getters in the format.

Lourens was the lone batter to cross the 200-run barrier, tallying 204 runs in four T20 contests.

She recorded half-centuries against North West and the Eastern Storm on Wednesday afternoon, before slashing a 33-ball 52 against Eastern Province (EP) in The Titans’ last fixture.

The Titans were chasing 118 to win after Eastern Province, who won the toss, totalled 118/7 at the NWU Oval.

EP entered the game unbeaten, having won all of their 50-over matches and three T20s on the trot. However, The Titans’ disciplined bowling attack ensured that the ladies from the Eastern Cape did not get comfortable in the middle by taking wickets at regular intervals, which prevented any batters from reaching 20.

Lourens, who opened the batting with Jessica Staubli, took control of the run chase from the first over. She shared a match-winning 68-run third-wicket partnership with Chanel Venter that ended in the 11th over when Lourens was dismissed by Kim Davids. Venter, who slammed an unbeaten 53 from 25 balls, with seven fours and a six, took over the chase from that point and steered Titans to 122/4 and a convincing six-wicket win with 39 balls to spare.

The victory over Eastern Province was a good bounce back from The Titans after a narrow eight-run loss to The Lions in the morning.

Maria van der Vyver also enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with the bat. She hit three fours and two sixes in her 61 from 49 balls against the Free State. Her effort secured a fourth win in four T20s for Boland. That record was matched by the Eastern Storm, the only other team to finish the week with an unblemished record across the two formats.

Boland, who won the toss and chose to bowl first, did well to restrict Free State to 131/2. Rethabile Nthoba, with 64 not out, and Shanique Janse van Rensburg, with 50, shared a superb 117-run opening partnership to lift the Free Staters to a competitive total. Unfortunately, for them, it wasn’t a winning score.

Van der Vyver and Wanda-Mari Ham’s half-centuries trumped Nthoba’s and Janse van Rensburg’s strong efforts.

The Boland duo shared an impressive 112-run second-wicket partnership that took their side to the brink of victory. When it broke down, Boland needed a mere 14 runs from 27 balls to win. Ham, who remained unbeaten on 55 from 47 balls, saw Boland to 132/3 with two-and-a-half overs in hand.

Mpumalanga‘s Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout was the other shining light with the bat in the four T20 matches, finishing the tournament with the second-most runs, 181, in the format.

She also struck the highest individual score, an unbeaten 98 against Northern Cape on Wednesday. Unfortunately, she couldn’t replicate that performance for Mpumalanga in their final outing against The Tuskers, to whom they lost by five wickets.

The Eastern Storm completed their unbeaten run with an emphatic nine-wicket win over Eastern Province. Tamzyn Hartman tallied 50 not out and Mieke van Voorst chipped in with 36 not out as the pair shared an unbroken -run stand to see their side to victory.

In their last match, on Thursday afternoon, the Storm chased down The Lions’ 123/6, winning by six wickets with eight balls to spare. Mpumelelo Mshiloane was undefeated on 56 when victory was achieved.

In an all-KZN clash, The Dolphins downed The Tuskers by seven wickets. Kirsten Kaltwasser made 23 not out in The Tuskers’ 68/7, with Ziya Mohanlall knocking over 3/14. In reply, The Dolphins took 13 overs to reach 70/3, led by Kayla Driver‘s 22. In the afternoon, Driver top-scored with 35 when The Dolphins beat North West by eight runs.

Mohanlall, meanwhile, topped the list of wicket-takers in the four T20s, removing nine batters. Malakhiwe Somhlahlo, of the Eastern Cape Iinyathi, also claimed nine wickets, but was more expensive than Mohanlall. The Dolphins’ bowler conceded 4.6 runs per over, while Somhlahlo went at six runs an over.

  • Van Zyl lead Titans to emphatic victory over Free State with second century

Van Zyl lead Titans to emphatic victory over Free State with second century

BLOEMFONTEIN. Titans‘ opening batter Reuben van Zyl is in red-hot form.

Van Zyl struck his second consecutive century of the Khaya Majola Cricket Week with a superb 166 against Free State on the Johan Volsteedt Oval on Thursday.

His innings is the third-highest score in the history of the tournament. The record belongs to Free State‘s Rilee Rossouw, who smashed a whirlwind 182 against Kei in 2006.

Rossouw, who went on to play 36 One-Day Internationals for South Africa, played most of his school cricket on the very same Johan Volsteedt Oval.

Van Zyl shared an opening partnership of 81 runs with Tshepang Laka (14) before combining with Mohammad Rasool (67*) in a commanding 172-run stand for the second wicket to take control of the contest.

The Titans won the match by eight wickets to book a semi-final meeting with Gauteng.

Van Zyl’s innings lasted 114 deliveries and included 18 fours and eight sixes.

Free State would not have been too dissatisfied after posting 261/5 in their 50 overs, thanks to half-centuries from Aiden Dodd (78), Christian Kind (76) and FG Botha (55).

Defending champions Western Province remain unbeaten after their two-wicket victory over Boland. They will face the Tuskers in the other semi-final.

The Tuskers slipped into the semi-finals through the back door, with their three-wicket win over Eastern Province lifting their net run rate to 0.164.

That victory, coupled with the Dolphins‘ six-wicket defeat to Gauteng, meant the Dolphins, Tuskers and Eastern Province all finished level on four log points. The Tuskers progressed to the semi-finals on a better net run-rate.

Dolphins’ batter Seth Simpson‘s century (102) was not enough to secure a win for his side. Gauteng’s Armaan Manack (103) led his team’s and shared a 137-run second-wicket partnership with Ombesa Matsha (75).
