Hoërskool Robertson has been a high scoring team all season. However, on Saturday, their defence stole the spotlight.
While they put only 20 points on the board, playing away from home, they kept Charlie Hofmeyr scoreless in their King Price Derby Series clash.
Robbies‘ flyhalf, Jaydan van Niekerk, collected five points from a conversion and penalty. He was also instrumental on attack, running creative lines to put his centres through defensive openings.
Meanwhile, Charlies‘ fullback, Shandley Burrows, found himself surrounded by traffic whenever he received the ball.
The visiting defence saw right through their host’s every move. They were quick to close down the spaces and contested fiercely at the breakdowns.
Robbies’ eighthman, Victor Readin, stood out, earning his fair share of the ball at ruck time, and he carried strongly, too, which brought him a try.
Charlies’ eighthman, Gerhard Goosen, found himself being the second jackal at the breakdown. He was solid on attack but was unable to breech the Robertson try-line. The home side’s loose forwards were outpaced and left to play with less possession than the visitors.
Their scrumhalf, PhillipBoshoff, tried every trick in the book, prying for a weakness in the Robertson defence, but Robbies were on their game and had an answer to every question posed.
If they are to win next year’s derby, then Charlie Hofmeyr will need to figure out how to beat the Robbies’ defensive rush. It flummoxed them on Saturday.
For Robertson, their victory was a proud turnaround. In last season’s clash, they were well beaten, going down 8-29 to a Luan Giliomee-inspired Charlie Hofmeyr team that went unbeaten.

BOYS
Durban High School (DHS), newcomers to the Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport, laid down a marker on Friday, day one of the competition, by posting a perfect five wins from five outings, including a 5-2 victory over the defending champion, Hilton College.
With its shoot-from- anywhere-on-the-court format, hockey 5s is an exciting all-action affair. It invites teams to try out new ideas and to explore their flair, and those are ingredients that are ideally suited to DHS’s game. They lapped it up and enjoyed themselves. Newcomers to the tournament, they may be, but School quickly made themselves at home.
In an always-meaningful clash, Hilton and Michaelhouse met in an early morning game, with ‘Houseedging a tight contest 2-1.
Last year’s runner-up, Garsfontein, put together an impressive opening day, bagging four wins, including a 5-2 defeat of their Pretoria rivals, St Alban’s College. They suffered one loss, but only after a penalty shootout against Hilton after their game had ended 5-5.
Michaelhouse dropped only one match, falling 2-5 to DHS, and they needed a penalty shootout to get past Kearsney after their clash ended 4-4, but they’re in the running to make further noise on day two.

Hoërskool Overberg hosts Hoërskool Langenhoven at 14:40 in Caledon this Saturday.
Two Saturdays ago, the visitors lost 49-7 to Hoërskool Montagu. Meanwhile last weekend, the Caledon locals lost 8-7 to HoërskoolBredasdorp.
Ovies eighthman and captain, Johan Beukes, is a key player for his side. He has a powerful engine, making him one of the first players at the breakdown.
In addition, he enjoys driving his opposition backwards in the tackles, while driving his team forwards in the carries. A strong performance from him can inspire his team to victory in front of a home crowd.
Langenhoven did not enjoy much possession in their last game. They’ll need their loose forwards to win them more possession in the breakdowns on Saturday. Flankers Dylan Labuschagne and Hendrik van Zyl are feisty. They’ll pose a threat to Beukes in the battle for the loose ball.
Both sides scored only seven points each in their previous fixtures. Home flyhalf, Curtis van Wyk, will look to get out of his cage and let his creativity flow. He is capable of surprising the visitors defence with a varied kicking game.
His opposition flyhalf, Curt-lee Willemse, is a tricky customer. His speed and agility are something to watch out for. If given too much space, he’ll snipe the gap and get away with it.
Either way, both sides will need to keep cool and focus on the essentials. A strong scrum and functioning lineout are two of the greatest strengths a team can have. The side that keeps calm and executes the basics well, is usually the winner in a big fixture such as this one.
The teams:
Hoërskool Overberg vs Hoërskool Langenhoven at 14:40 in Caledon this Saturday:
Overberg: 15 Jade Macpherson, 14 Hlumelo Bala, 13 Favian Arendse, 12 Lee Abotsi, 11 Ave Tyali, 10 Curtis van Wyk, 9 Wilber Louw, 8 Johan Beukes (captain), 7 Joëlski Hendricks, 6 Andrew Erasmus, 5 Anro Ungerer, 4 Christiaan Maritz, 3 Miguel Lahmor, 2 Tristan Oliver, 1 Yhulle Carelse.
Hoërskool Langenhoven: 15 Namanda Klaasen, 14 Quiwin Solomon, 13 Dewandre Laverlot, 12 Faizel Lakay, 11 Daylin Schietekat, 10 Curt-lee Willemse, 9 Evan Hardnick, 8 CJ van der Walt, 7 Dylan Labuschagne, 6 Hendrik van Zyl, 5 Caleb Ewing, 4 Wessel Cronjé, 3 Tiaan Wobben, 2 Francois Myburgh, 1 Jade Smith.
Over 20 matches have passed, and the first team football of the Gauteng Development League (GDL), which is essentially the u19 division, continues to present challenges. Five teams, including the defending champions, Highlands Park, are in the title race.
Coach Sfiso Mnguni, who secured the GDL title in both 2023 and 2024 with the Lions of the North, may very well be in contention for yet another GDL title for a third time. Currently, Highlands Park is positioned third, just two points behind the log leaders, the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns, who are at the top with 48 points. Highlands Park has found themselves in a similar situation recently, and this year they are among the top five teams vying for the prestigious GDL title.
The teams in contention include SuperSport United, currently in fifth place with 45 points, tied with Vaal’s finest, Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), who occupy the fourth position. Highlands Park is steadily climbing the table in third place, trailing Randburg AFC, who have delivered some of the best performances in this year’s GDL. Their coach, Skhosiphi Mgobozi has praised his players as a unique group of talented individuals. Recently, Randburg AFC, in their quest for a title, has made their ambitions clear by appointing the legendary figure of African football, former Kaizer Chiefs and Zambian international Collins Mbesuma, as their new striker coach.
Dedicated enthusiasts of South African football will undoubtedly recall Mbesuma for his record-setting 35-goal season with the Glamour Boys during the 2004/5 PSL season. Some may also remember his tenure in the Premier League with Portsmouth FC and his role in Zambia’s victorious 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad. Mbesuma contributes a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach to the Randburg team, being one of the five players to have scored over 100 PSL goals. Among these players are Bradley Grobler, who has netted 114 goals and continues to play for Sekhukhune United this season in the Betway Premiership, Daniel Mudau with 110 goals, Mabhuti Khenyeza with 110 goals, and Manuel ‘Tico Tico’ Bucuane, who has scored 104 goals.

At Randburg, Mbesuma will apply his knowledge to the younger age groups. This demonstrates the commitment and seriousness of all teams in the GDL as they strive to secure the prestigious Gauteng and South African development title.
This Sunday, at home and with live coverage provided by SuperSport Schools, Randburg will face RESA. Points are at stake, and both teams have the opportunity to move closer to the coveted number one position.
Highlands Park, located in Balfour Park, will host Rockefvs, who currently sit in 14th place. Realistically, this presents a challenging match for the visiting team – however, as we have witnessed recently, anything can happen in football. The latest example is Kathorus Hyper Academy, which has surprised the GDL by defeating several so-called giants such as Sundowns and securing valuable points.
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns will welcome East Rand Athletic Club at their home ground in Clapham High, Pretoria. East Rand Athletic Club has endured a particularly difficult season. After 21 matches, they find themselves in a disappointing second-to-last position, 17th overall, just six points ahead of Elspark United Academy, which has managed to gather only 7 points from 22 games. Given the current standings, it is clear that Mamelodi Sundowns will enter this match against East Rand Athletic Club as the favourites, especially considering the significant home advantage they will enjoy.
Additionally, SuperSport United will be monitoring the table closely over the weekend while also facing Sevens Academy at Curro Sagewood.
In other fixtures, Kathorus Hyper Academy, which has recently earned the title of giant slayer, will face TS Galaxy at Huntersfield Stadium. Joburg City will be facing Eslpark United at the Greek Sporting Club.
The Phefeni Boys Glamour Boys, who have unexpectedly dropped to sixth place in the standings, will host the School of Excellence at Kazier Chiefs Village at Naturena on Saturday.
Wits Junior will be up against Tuks at Marks Park, where The Students enjoys a home ground advantage. Although this does not necessarily ensure an easy victory, they should aim to capitalise on this advantage and secure maximum points at home.
