Hudson Park will be desperate to regain the winning touch, but they face what has become the toughest challenge in Eastern Cape schools’ rugby this season when they host Queen’s College, in East London, on Saturday.

The Hudson outfit has not won since a victory over Eldoraigne in the KES Easter Festival, and they head into Saturday’s showdown after recent setbacks against Framesby and Graeme College.

That means coach Onke Dubase and his charges will have to press the reset button to handle the formidable challenge the high-flying Queenians will pose.

Even home-ground advantage will not make it any easier for Hudson Park as Queen’s is riding a four-match winning streak and their confidence will be at a peak.

In their recent games, flank Jeffrey Niland‘s team has seen off Eastern Cape powerhouses Selborne, Dale, St Andrew’s, and Grey High.

With a solid pack of forwards and dangerous backs, Queen’s will start as the outright favourites, but there can be no room for complacency as Hudson has everything to play for and will be fired up to claim a signature win.

In another massive showdown, Selborne College makes the trip to the Free State to face one of the giants of South African schools’ rugby, Grey College.

Although the Bloemfontein side has lost twice this year, to Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High, they remain one of the benchmarks in schools’ rugby and with flyhalf Darius Erwee and the explosive Ethan Adams looming in the midfield, it could be a tough afternoon for the visitors.

Selborne welcomes back hard-working flank Dominic Stegmann, who missed last week’s defeat against St Andrew’s. He and captain, prop Robert John-Osunkwo, will have to marshall the forwards if they are to have any chancing of maintaining a degree of parity.

Another exciting clash looms in Nxuba (formerly Cradock), where Marlow Agricultural will pit their renowned fighting qualities against the winning ambitions of Dale College.

It has not been a great season for Qonce’s Dale, but a number of their losses have been by narrow margins. They got back on the winning track against Cambridge High last weekend and would like to build on that this weekend.

Marlow will be highly motivated after a disappointing loss against Nico Malan last Saturday when the only points they scored came from a penalty try.

It was a rather error-prone display and coach Derik Olivier will be calling for greater precision all-round to secure a home win against the never-say-die Dalians.

The debate over which girls’ team is the best in the Eastern Cape will come to an end this weekend when Collegiate Girls’ High takes on DSG Makhanda, in Gqeberha, on Saturday morning.

The highly anticipated derby between the rivals is scheduled for 09:55 and will be broadcast live on the SuperSport Schools App.

There is everything to play for with both teams currently unbeaten in the Eastern Cape after enjoying a fantastic couple of months on the turf.

DSG will make the short trip from Makhanda buoyed after powering to an impressive 7-0 victory over Clarendon High School for Girls last weekend.

In that clash, captain Abigail Holderness, who recently made her 100th appearance for the school, scored a hat-trick. She was joined on the scoresheet by her sister, Lucy, Anna Olivier, Jocelyn Appel and Ava van der Walt.

Before the Clarendon thumping, DSG outplayed Hudson Park 7-1, Queenstown Girls’ High 5-2, and Pearson High 2-1.

Like their rivals, Collegiate is on a healthy winning streak. Last week, they faced arguably their toughest challenge against Pearson High in a massive Gqeberha derby away from home and they aced the test.

Their Friday night clash had it all, and it was Collegiate who came out on top, winning 4-0 courtesy of a Kerrin Gillies hat-trick and a Jana Prinsloo strike.

They also put together an impeccable run before beating Pearson, cruising to a 4-0 win over Kingswood College and a 9-0 shellacking of Union High.

Both sides are playing confident hockey, and they’ll fancy their chances to get the job done in a high-stakes encounter.

It will come down to fine margins. Opportunities will need to be taken, and accuracy will be paramount in the circle.

Defensively, the sides will be wary of conceding penalty corners. Both have scored plenty of goals from the set piece.

In big games, it is always important that key players impose themselves.

For Collegiate, Anna Porter, Kate Brennan, and Jenna Coetzee will lead their team’s challenge at the back.

Jade Grobler and Jana Prinsloo will aim to boss the midfield, while Kerrin Gillies, who is having a season to savour, will surely cause problems for the visitors, especially at PC time.

DSG, on the other hand, will undoubtedly look to their skipper, Abigail Holderness, to produce the goods alongside her sister, Lucy.

Anna Olivier has been in superb form all season long and is one of the unsung heroes in the team. Others, including Jocelyn Appel and Ava van der Walt, will also have key contributions to make.

    Other matches

On Saturday morning, at 11:00, Woodridge College welcomes Outeniqua to Thornhill for a derby.

There will also be a massive interschools clash between Framesby and Pearson High. In East London, Stirling High hosts Cambridge High, while Hudson Park takes on Queenstown Girls’ High.

The host team, Framesby, will be aiming for a bounce-back performance from what has been a difficult season for them with a quality performance when they meet Pearson in a King Price Derby Series fixture, in Gqeberha, on Saturday.

The annual clash pits two of the Eastern Province’s most competitive teams against each other, with Framesby a well-established force, while Pearson is rising fast through the ranks in the region.

An indication of Pearson’s credentials is that they are the only Eastern Cape team to have lowered the colours of Queen’s College this season, beating the Komani side 20-17 at the Graeme College Festival.

Admittedly, Queen’s has developed into a much-improved outfit since that loss in March, but Pearson poses a distinct threat to Framesby’s victory hopes, especially with the elusive Denilo Jordaan calling the shots from flyhalf.

No doubt, Framesby coach Louis Gerber and his staff will have worked on plans to contain Jordaan and those will likely revolve around establishing some sort of supremacy up front.

If they can do that, then their own halfbacks, Mondre van Heerden and Calestin Felkers, will be able to unleash their dangerous backs in a bid to find the winning touch.

On the other hand, should Pearson gain parity up front, they will severely test the defensive systems of the home side.

The other big showdown in Gqeberha on Saturday comes a few kilometres across town where Grey High faces Makhanda’s St Andrew’s College in a match that always whets the appetite.

While Grey will be hurting from a late one-point loss to Queen’s in Komani, St Andrew’s heads into the contest off an impressive 40-10 victory over Selborne College and they’ll want to ride that wave of momentum onto the Kolisi Field.

Talented fullback Meyer Prinsloo stands out as one of the dangermen who St Andrew’s will need to keep quiet, but the whole Grey squad will be fired up and eager to get their season back on track.

St Andrew’s is also littered with game-breakers, none more so than their number 15, Will Stevens, who could make an impact with both his running ability and his educated boot.

A blockbuster of a match is also brewing in Makhanda where the exciting Graeme College side hosts high-flying Nico Malan.

With both sides possessing exciting sets of backs, capable of setting the Somerset Field alight, it should be a high energy cracker.

Although Graeme lost recently to St Andrew’s, they have an outstanding record this season, with nine wins in their other 10 matches. Significantly, they won away from home against the tough Hudson Park last weekend. They will need to be as consistent to handle the Humansdorp side.

Nico Malan has three defeats and a draw from their 11 matches, but they have recently seen off the challenges of Pearson and Marlow Agricultural.

They’ll be confident ahead of the Graeme clash. It will be a new day, however, and any complacency could be their death knell.

Johannesburg will feature an intriguing slate of top hockey clashes on Saturday. They’re tough to call, although Jeppe High School for Boys will be favoured to continue their excellent season.

Parktown Boys’ High hosts St John’s College in a league match at 11:45. Based on their recent games, it’s expected to be a high-paced, tight contest that could go either way.

St John’s heads into the clash with a mixed season’s record – seven wins, seven losses, and two draws from their 16 outings.

They’ve produced some gritty performances recently, including a 2-0 win over Helpmekaar Kollege, which was followed by a nerve-wracking penalty shootout win over St Benedict’s College. However, just last weekend, they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of the same St Benedict’s team.

Earlier in May, St John’s put together a decent run at the Aitken Cup. They started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Helpmekaar before flexing their attacking strength in emphatic 5-0 victories over both Hoërskool Noordheuwel and Northcliff High.

Those results saw them make it through to the quarterfinals, where they met St David’s Marist Inanda. That’s where the St John’s title challenge was ended, with St David’s triumphing 3-0.

The Blues rebounded with successive wins over Helpmekaar and St Benedict’s to finish fifth overall.

Parktown has played some good hockey recently Their recent draw against St David’s Marist, who needed a last-gasp goal to share the spoils, showed Parktown is no pushover.

With home-ground advantage, strong support, and plenty of momentum, Parktown will be eager to get one over St John’s.

King Edward VII School (KES), fresh off a thrilling 3-3 draw with Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), takes on St Benedict’s.

It has been a good season for the Red Sticks, and they’ll be keen to continue their consistent form ahead of the mid-year exams and holidays.

Meanwhile, Jeppe High School for Boys, who are in the conversation with SACS and Paul Roos Gimnasium for the title of the top team in the country in 2025, welcome Affies to the Bowden AstroTurf.

The Kensington side has enjoyed a dominant season. They’re unbeaten, and they successfully defended the Aitken Cup recently. At the Standard Bank KES Easter Festival. they won five out of five.

Affies offers a serious challenge, however. Their well-structured approach makes them a difficult team to break down.

Junior Bok squad named for final training camp ahead of World Championship

Junior Springbok coach Kevin Foote has included three new players in a training squad for the SA u20s’ final preparation camp which starts in Stellenbosch on Monday in the build-up towards the World Rugby Under-20 Championship next month in Italy.

Foote has welcomed back a number of familiar faces who are back from injury and Vodacom United Rugby Championship duty in addition to three newcomers in Rambo Kubheka (loosehead prop), Shaun Schürman (hooker) and Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf).

Returning to the squad are locks Jaco Grobbelaar and Arno van der Merwe, No 8 Stephanus Linde, and outside backs Jaco Williams and Alzeadon Felix.

“Rambo, who played for the SA u18s last year, has been doing very well for Hollywoodbets Sharks in the SA Rugby U21 Cup, while Shaun and Ian, a very good game driver and left-footed kicker, have also been in good form for the Vodacom Bulls U21s,” said Foote.

“Jaco Grobbelaar, who played for the Junior Boks last year, is back from his Vodacom URC duty with the Vodacom Bulls and will join us in week two, and Stephanus, who toured with us to Georgia earlier this year, returns after he picked up a knee injury in the FNB Varsity Cup.

“It’s also good to welcome back from injury Jaco Williams, who has been training with the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ Vodacom URC team, Alzeadon Felix, who had a good Varsity Cup campaign, and Arno van der Merwe.”

Foote also revealed that HB Odendaal (hooker), Neil Hansen (lock), Divan Fuller (flanker), and Matt Romao (flanker) have been ruled out due to injury, while JC Mars (fullback) will join the squad as soon as he has shrugged off a hamstring niggle.

The Junior Boks will train for the next three weeks before the 30-man squad fly out to Italy on 24 June for the annual World Rugby u20 Championship. Two training sessions against a visiting senior Kenyan side form part of the schedule as the squad step up their readiness for Italy.

According to Foote, the meetings with Kenya will be match simulation exercises, with the first set for 9 June and the second one five days later on 14 June, both in Stellenbosch.

“We’re a very settled team now, with some guys coming back from injury and unfortunately some players being injured whilst on duty for their provinces in the SA Rugby U21 Cup,” said Foote.

“We’ve kept the core of the squad together for a long time now; they’re a great team off the field and have a good connection, which we think is very important for us going into the World Championship, also understanding how we want to play and our game model.

“There has been a lot of work done over the last few camps, including the tour to Georgia and the U20 Rugby Championship. Although we didn’t get the results against Australia and New Zealand in Gqeberha, we’ve taken a lot of good learnings from those experiences, and we feel we are very close to where we want to be.

“We still have a couple of things to work on, and we will work very hard indeed to make sure we are prepared and ready when we leave for Italy.”

Foote said he and his coaching staff are looking forward to working with the squad and see the Kenya meetings as a key part of the preparations: “We will work with a 37-player squad until after the two sessions against Kenya. Following that, we will be working with the selected 30-man squad in the last week of the training camp before our departure to Italy on 24 June.

Domenic Coetzer neem Stock se plek as skrumskakel in.

Stellenberg hunts DF Malan win on a busy weekend in the Cape

The month of May has brought nothing but joy to the Stellenberg High School hockey community.

That’s because both their boys’ and girls’ first teams have picked up massive victories that have shaken the landscape of school hockey in the Western Cape.

The boys’ side, led by coach Kyle Esau, defeated Bishops 2-1, while the girls, under the guidance of coach Paulene de Bruin, edged out Herschel Girls School 3-2 in a league match last week.

It was the first time since 2016 that Stellenberg had achieved that feat against Herschel, with goals from Juane Meiring, Stella Zwiegers and Stephanie Lloyd doing the trick as Stellies twice came from behind.

“I was delighted to be part of the winning team,” coach De Bruin told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“Herschel has an incredible legacy, so to come out on top against them was truly remarkable. While we won the Western Province Girls League last year, that victory was largely influenced by the results of other teams.

“This time, it was great to finally break through Herschel’s incredibly strong defence and earn the win.”

The win for coach De Bruin and her side came at the right time after a difficult start to the season where they struggled to find their mojo.

They missed out on a podium finish at the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament, ending fifth, before picking up a top 10 finish at the Belgotex Sport Girls Challenge.

Despite the slow start, coach De Bruin said she’s pleased with how her team has progressed.

“Our girls are heavily involved in summer sports, such as athletics and tennis, which has had a significant impact on our preparations and impacted the start of our season. However, I am thrilled with the focus and commitment they have shown throughout the past three months of intense training for the league.

“They are currently maintaining an exceptionally high level of intensity in their training, and I hope they can sustain this until the end of the term.”

The ladies from Bellville will next shift their attention to DF Malan, a side that has struggled to keep up with the rest of the pack this season.

DF suffered a hefty 1-7 loss to St Cyprian’s School last week, before drawing 2-2 with Fairmont High School. Stellies, however, won’t be taking their northern suburbs’ rivals lightly when they lock horns on Saturday at 11:00.

“They are always a formidable challenge, given the intense rivalry of this northern suburbs’ school derby,” the coach said.

“The competition between the two schools has long been fierce, underpinned by a deep mutual respect for DF Malan.

“Known for their strong character and brave hearts, they boast many talented players whom we will need to watch closely.

“Our primary focus is to maintain solid team structures, uphold high intensity attacking strategies, and ensure our defensive disciplines remain strong.”

While their victories have come from good teamwork, there have been some standout players for Stellenberg this season.

In defence, Juane Meiring has been rock-solid alongside Minke LourensIlke van Merwe has coordinated much of their play from midfield, while Zanay Gerber continues to be fearless and ruthless in front of goal.

Bea van den Berg also deserves a mention as a top performer. The side will be led out by skipper Helen de Kock.

    Maritzburg College vs Kearsney College

Goldstone’s will be pumping on Saturday when Maritzburg College hosts Kearsney College on the Red, Black, and White‘s Reunion Weekend in a King Price Derby Series clash.

Not only will College be out to make their Old Boys happy, they’ll also be aiming to avenge a 14-16 loss to the One-Stripe early in 2024, which set their campaign back.

It won’t be a simple task. Kearsney has made strong strides this season. College’s form, meanwhile, has been somewhat inconsistent.

Last time out, College almost pulled off a massive upset, going down 21-22 against unbeaten Westville Boys’ High. They were also very good when they travelled upcountry to take on Pretoria Boys High, coming away with a 45-28 win, but it’s difficult to predict what they’re going to produce.

However, the aforementioned Old Boys’ Reunion and Goldstone’s are huge plusses for coach Nico Breedt‘s boys.

The Goldstone’s impact was on full display in 2024 when College hosted Affies, who went down to unbeaten Paul Roos by only five points, lost to Paarl Gim by one, and Grey College by four. Paul Roos trounced College 46-0 and Grey won 48-0. Yet, Affies only narrowly escaped defeat on Goldstone’s, with a last-minute penalty lifting them to a 39-37 win.

There’s good, young talent coming through the Kearsney ranks, with four of their players included in the Sharks Academy Week team, which is an u17 outfit. College has three, but they also feature front ranker Indiphile Mlotshwa and eighthman Wasi Vyumbwera in the Craven Week side.

If College plays the kind of game they played so successfully against Westville, Kearsney could be in trouble. Twice this season – against Hilton College and Michaelhouse – they’ve come up short against teams that were intent on hitting it up hard off rucks and mauls, and in the channels on either side of them. When those teams were able to build up momentum, they won going away.

Last time out, Kearsney gave a good account of themselves against Durban High School (DHS), who play a similar game to Hilton and Michaelhouse, and the One-Stripe ran in some eye-catching tries. They feature exciting offensive talent, which should bring them points. The big challenge for the visitors will be how effective they are on defence.

Durban High School vs Hilton College

Durban High School‘s (DHS) Van Heerden’s Field will be jam-packed, no doubt, for their Founders Day clash with Hilton College.

It’s going to be a big-hitting, physical battle between two very well coached teams that understand their roles and their game plans, which, in many ways, mirror that of the opponent.

Hilton looked fantastic in their last match, a 53-15 dismantling of Glenwood High at the Sharks Schools’ Rugby Day. When they build up a head of steam, their combinations hunt together, and forwards and backs seamlessly combine. DHS, though, prides itself on its defence and they’re disruptive when stopping the opposition. Building up momentum against School is a huge challenge.

In many ways, this is a battle of two teams in which they each know what is coming. The question is, what are they going to do about it?

DHS heads into the contest off the back of a 28-33 defeat to Westville Boys’ High, who won 23-15 at Hilton in their season-opener. School fell 16 points behind on Bowden’s Field, but they showed their spirit by rattling off 17 points without reply to take a 28-27 lead before two late penalties won it for the Griffin. They’re never out of a contest.

Much will depend on the quality of ball supplied to Hilton flyhalf Liyema Nela, who is able to dictate play with a well-rounded game.

One of the features of schoolboy rugby this season has been the incredible talent in the midfields and there will be no shortage of that in Saturday’s showdown. The clash between DHS’s Zingce Simka and Nathan Aneke and Hilton’s Tristan Uys and Khazimla Makali should be fascinating. Simka brings physicality, Aneka’s a smooth runner, Makali has pace to burn, and Uys owns some underrated subtle skills, among other qualities.

Hilton be without Ricky Adonis, the hattrick hero of their big win over Glenwood. John Grubb wears the number 11 jersey in his place, while there’s also a change on the right wing, where Joshua Kok gets the start.

Up front, two rugged packs will vie for supremacy, and two tough loose trios will play a massive role in the outcome of the contest. Much will depend on who controls the loose exchanges, especially the pace of recycled possession.

Expect a high-quality, tightly contested clash.

Westville Boys’ High vs Glenwood High

Westville Boys’ High has already dealt with those KZN opponents perceived to be their toughest challengers this season, beating Hilton College 23-15, Northwood 16-14, and DHS 33-28, but there are no gimmes, and Glenwood High showed on their Old Boys’ Day last weekend that they can be an awfully tough nut to crack.

In front of their loyal supporters, on Dixon’s Field, Glenwood took it to Northwood, and it was only right at the death that the Knights managed to pull clear with two late tries, which took them to a 30-16 victory. The result, though, had been in the balance until then.

Glenwood’s 2025 team has taken a step forward since a tough 2024 season. Still, though, they exhibit some inconsistency, which has cost them a game or two.

They’re capable of playing outstanding rugby. The manner in which they roared into a 29-0 lead against Milnerton High at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival was awesome. Then, they let it slip and ended up claiming a narrow 37-34 win. That’s the Green Machine this season.

They visit Bowden’s Field on Saturday, the home of Westville Boys’ High, who boast a pristine record of 10 matches played and 10 wins. They also have eight members of the Sharks Craven Week team in their ranks. Glenwood has none.

However, Westville is coming off an emotional 33-28 victory over DHS last week. That opens them up to the possibility of a let-down performance. They’ll know that, and they’ll be focused on their execution on Saturday. Still, if they don’t assert themselves early, Glenwood will be encouraged, and the challenge could become far more testing than it might otherwise appear.

Westville was able to play the game against DHS in the right areas at crucial times in their big win, and their tactical kicking will, again, be extremely important. If they own that contest, they’ll be hard to stop.

Goal-kicking, too, has a role to play, with two of the best kickers around, Jade-Will Koopman (Westville) and Joshua Kopp (Glenwood), handling those duties. Koopman’s perfect return against DHS, which brought him 18 points, was a match-winning contribution.

South African Schools fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya left the field in Westville’s win over DHS, and he won’t be in the starting 15 on Saturday. Lux Sononkonkono, an Academy Week player, who took over from Siyaya and did a masterful job, will again wear the number 15 jersey.
