Hoërskool Eldoraigne hosted Hoërskool Zwartkop in interschool hockey matches on Friday and Saturday in Pretoria, with the girls’ 1st XIs meeting on Friday and the boys’ first teams facing off on Saturday.

Their home and away derby began in 2018 and has been fiercely and closely contested ever since.

Both of the big matches delivered impressive intensity, but the hosts, Eldoraigne, emerged victorious in both contests to reverse last year’s heartbreak, when Zwartkop won both games for the first time.

In the girls’ match, Jeanté Korff scored the all-important only goal of the contest as both sides defended with discipline and grit.

Eldoraigne’s head coach, Chadwin Petersen, praised his side’s resilience, especially after last year’s narrow loss to Zwartkop.

“Adversity does not build character, it reveals it,” Petersen stated.

“It was tough losing in 2024 in a match we felt we should’ve won. But this year gave us a fresh opportunity with a new group of players, who rose to the occasion. All credit to Zwartkop. They pushed us to the edge. But our girls showed fantastic character to pull through.”

In the boys’ fixture, Eldoraigne was dominant and sealed a confident 3-0 win thanks to clinical finishes from Duncan Eloff, Nico Janse van Rensburg, and Hanco Nel.

The goal-scoring trio showcased slick combination play and ruthless efficiency in front of goal and capitalised on a Zwartkop side that struggled to find its rhythm in key moments.

Zwartkop boys’ head of Hockey, Martinus Gouws, offered a heartfelt and humorous analogy to describe the defeat: “When I was younger, I had a good friend who lived nearby,” he said. “We’d always play at his house, but when we got up to mischief, his mom would give us a hiding. That’s how Friday night felt. We got a hiding at our friend’s house.”

Gracious in defeat, Gouws praised the opposition: “Congratulations to Eldoraigne, they were brilliant in every aspect. We, unfortunately, couldn’t get going. Too many unforced errors and poor execution in the attacking third let us down.

“The girls’ game was a nail-biter, very evenly matched, and the deciding goal came late. It’s a tough one to take, but it was a good battle all the same.”

The first three months of the schoolboy hockey season in the Western Cape have been fairly routine in terms of top teams dominating and tallying up wins.

However, it was just a matter of time before hockey enthusiasts who love an underdog story were treated to a thrilling clash and a major upset.

Last year, that big shock came when Rondebosch Boys’ High defeated Paul Roos Gimnasium 1-0. No one saw that coming.

Fast forward to 2025, and a major upset unfolded on Friday night when Stellenberg High School recorded a famous 2-1 victory over Bishops Diocesan College at the Woodlands AstroTurf, in Cape Town.

That triumph will go down as one of the best yet for Stellenberg, who in past seasons have been on the receiving end of some hefty defeats at the hands of Bishops.

The boys from Bellville meant business from the get-go and put the hosts under pressure before opening the scoring through Charl van Niekerk. The home side pulled one back, but Gerrard Matthews-Boukoua’s strike sealed a treasured win for the visitors.

Reacting after the momentous victory, head coach Kyle Esau said: “I’m still overwhelmed by the result. Coming in, I didn’t expect the result, but I expected the boys to come out and fight and give it their all.

“The boys played their hearts out. I think we did the same against SACS, but we didn’t have the result to show for it, and then coming back against Bishops, they stepped up,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

Their first two league fixtures, against SACS and Rondebosch Boys’ High, were tough on Stellenberg. Against SACS, they suffered a 1-9 loss, and last weekend they went down 1-5 against ‘Bosch.

Despite those heavy defeats, they showed glimpses of their potential and of how dangerous they could be. To finally see that potential deliver a big result pleased Esau.

“Taking a result from any of the boys’ schools is always a special moment because it’s not often you get those results against the top four teams in our league,” he said.

It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of grinding, since I took over three years ago. The guys have had to adapt to my systems and my styles. It’s been a process, but now it’s coming through stronger than ever.”

Stellenberg will return to action against Wynberg Boys’ High at the end of May. Coach Esau said they’ll reset, refocus, and quickly put the Bishops’ win behind them.

I told the guys immediately after the match that it’s done now. We’ve grabbed the points, and we need to move on.

“We have a break this coming week, and then we take on Wynberg later this month, but we will work hard and focus on fixing the mistakes we made. It’s important to reset and refocus. These are big games that we are kicking off our league with, so we have no time to relax,” he concluded.

While it was a team effort that secured the win, some of the players who stood out included Gerrard Matthews-Boukoua, Jacques van Dyk, Nicol Truter, centurion Ben Marais, Charl van Niekerk, Christopher Schoeman and Juan Joubert.

In another Western Cape clash, Wynberg Boys’ High claimed a 3-2 win over Paarl Boys’ High at the Astro of Dreams.

Chad Julius netted a brace for coach Ben Wiley’s side before Ethan Daniels got his name on the score sheet. For Paarl, it was Martin de Bruyn and Alex Lategan who replied.

Parel Vallei, meanwhile, returned to action with an impressive 4-0 victory over Somerset College. Their goals were scored by Boland u18A representatives, Luka Meets (2) and Luca Jordaan before Nathan Nissen got in on the action.

SACS were the big winners on the day, thumping Rondebosch Boys’ High 9-1 at the Brewery AstroTurf.

It was a special day for their number 10, Litha Kraai, who ran out for his 100th game in the blue and white hoops. Kraai was in top form and netted five times while further goals by Matthew Lassen, Reece Theunis, Jo Le Roux, and Adam Thompson added to the lopsided final score.

Reddam House Constantia also registered a win, outplaying DF Malan 5-1.

Skipper Joe Gitlin contributed a hat-trick,  and, in the process, scored his 100th goal for Reddam, becoming the first player in the school’s history to achieve the feat.

Mitchell Welch and Daniel Steyn chipped in with goals as Reddam continued to bolster their impressive record.

Parkies, Affies oorheers in Jubilee-liga; Klofies-kaptein vier 150ste

    Uitslae o.19A:

    Garsfontein 25, Oos-Moot 18

    Menlopark 45, Eldoraigne 12

    Affies 40, Waterkloof 16

  • Nories skok Monnas, Helpies oorrompel Florida

Nories skok Monnas, Helpies oorrompel Florida

    Uitslae o.19A:

    Helpmekaar 57, Florida 4
    Monument 19, Noordheuwel 20
    Rand Park 31, Linden 19

  • Grey College deflates Affies in Friday Nite Lights clash

Grey College deflates Affies in Friday Nite Lights clash

Grey College celebrated a convincing win over Affies after a good performance in their Hyundai Friday Nite Lights match. Photo: Grey College on Facebook.

Grey College was in top form against Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in their Hyundai Friday Nite Lights contest at Grey College on Friday evening, romping to a 4-1 victory.

Waldo Konig, with two goals, Wian Griesel, and Gianni Tyropolis, were on target for Grey College.

With strong support in the stands, the home side did not disappoint their backers. Their schoolmates sang out their support with gusto, and the songs were the wind beneath College’s wings.

Affies stood firm and denied the hosts a goal in the first chukka, but Grey broke through in the second. Coach Dallan Phillips’ had done a good job of exerting pressure, and they were rewarded with a well-worked field goal three minutes into the second quarter.

First, they turned over possession high up the field. Then, they made ground down the left flank and broke open the deadlock by squeezing in a goal after a bit of a scramble in front of the goal box.

“I am very happy with our pressing tonight. We put Affies under pressure, especially early on,” Phillips said after the match.

The visitors did a good job repelling all of Grey College’s subsequent attempts on goal in the remainder of the chukka. However, the hosts could be kept out only so long, and, shortly after halftime, they added another field goal.

They extended their advantage to 3-0 with a penalty corner in the last chukka, but Affies pulled one back four minutes later, also from a shorty.

With Affies chasing another goal to make a game of it, Grey College sat deep and soaked up the pressure. Then, they struck a hammer blow on the counterattack, knocking in their fourth goal with less than five minutes left on the clock to secure the win.

“I was impressed by our defence. The boys did really well at the back. But I feel we leave a lot of goals on the pitch. We need to work on our goal-scoring,” Phillips reflected on the contest.

Something else Grey College will need to address is their discipline. They were, at one point, reduced to nine players, with two men in the bin. That aside, Phillips’s side played as good a match as they could have.

    RESULT

    Grey College 4-1 Affies
