Callum van Oudtshoorn and Ruan Strauss scored in the second half to seal a nervy 2-0 win for Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) over Paarl Boys’ High, in Paarl, on Friday night.

Although it lacked goals, the clash between the two powerhouses delivered moments of excitement and gave spectators a taste of what’s to come from Boland at the SASHOC National Week.

PRG was favoured heading into the game after thumping Paarl Gim 6-2 two weeks ago. Boys’ High, meanwhile, suffered a close 2-3 loss against Wynberg Boys’ High last week.

Playing at home, in front of their supporters and vocal schoolmates, was always going to be an added advantage for coach Rowan McLachlan and his side, and they made full use of that advantage in the opening half, frustrating the visitors by limiting their chances and keeping them scoreless.

The midfield battle was heated, with Christo Swanepoel and AJ Mostert locking horns before shaking hands after the game and posing for an Instagram photo.

On the field, though, they were fierce rivals for 60 minutes, and Swanepoel was the happier captain when his side opened the scoring in the third chukka.

Van Oudtshoorn beat Luan Bornman in the Paarl Boys’ High goal, much to the satisfaction of the travelling PRG supporters.

The home side tried to play from the back numerous times, but their outlet was sloppy, and PRG’s forwards were ready to pounce on misdirected passes.

A surging run into the circle minutes later by Matthew Cardoza found Strauss unmarked, and he buried the ball into the back of the net for his side’s second.

Boys’ High kept battling away and had their chances to get back into the game, but PRG held on for the win.

Coach Michael Baker and his PRG boys will next shift their attention to a mouthwatering showdown with South African College High School (SACS) while Boys’ High prepares to face Stellenberg High.

In another big clash, Parel Vallei High School recorded a massive 3-2 win over Paarl Gimnasium in Somerset.

Coach Michael van Rensburg‘s troops battled hard against their Boland counterparts and claimed victory, courtesy of goals by Stephan Malan, Paul Roux, and Liyema Jijana.

Wynberg Boys’ High also won, beating their southern suburbs rivals Bishops 3-1 on the Astro of Dreams.

Chad Julius, Ethan Daniels and Ethan Smith were the goal scorers for the winners.

There were also victories for Rondebosch Boys’ High and SACS against Fairmont High School and DF Malan, respectively.

‘Bosch downed Fairmont 2-0, while SACS thumped DF 10-0. Litha Kraai scored a whopping six goals for the boys in blue and white. Mohlodi Maseko netted a brace, while Reece Theunis and Jo le Roux also struck, to complete the drubbing.

In George, York High was held to a 1-1 draw by Langenhoven Gimnasium. Hoërskool Outeniqua, meanwhile, overran Hoërskool Framesby 7-0.

    RESULTS

    Outeniqua 7-0 Framesby
York High School 1-1 Langenhoven Gimnasium
    Durbanville 4-2 Reddam House Constantia
Wynberg Boys’ High 3-1 Bishops Diocesan College
Paul Roos Gimnasium 2-0 Paarl Boys’ High
    SACS 10-0 DF Malan
Rondebosch Boys’ High 2-0 Fairmont High

It was a far from perfect performance by Grey High School, but four goals in the second half sealed a gritty 5-2 victory over Queen’s College, in Komani, on Friday.

Selborne College, meanwhile, picked up their biggest win of the season so far when they won 1-0 at St Andrew’s College.

The action on Friday night began in Komani, though, where Grey High faced a Queen’s side looking to get back to winning ways after suffering a hefty 1-5 loss against St Andrew’s last time out. Grey was coming off a bye.

It was a cagey affair from the outset, with the hosts feeding off the home support at the Chris Harker AstroTurf.

They started brightly and opened the scoring in the first chukka through Asi Vena, who found himself in space and scored after picking up a loose ball inside the circle.

That goal was immediately matched when Grey went on the attack and was awarded a peanlty corner after the ball struck a Queen’s foot inside the host’s circle.

All season long, James Chree has been the go-to man during short corner time for Grey, and it was business as usual. This time, though, his flick was kept out by goalkeeper Rowan Miles, and a rebound shot was also saved before the ball landed comfortably for Ameer Muller, who turned it into the goalbox to level matters.

The two sides returned for a lacklustre second chukka, which was clouded by inaccuracies and unforced errors, resulting in the tempo of the game dropping.

That worked in favour of Queen’s, who frustrated Grey. Around the Astro, the home team’s supporters started to believe something special was on the cards.

That belief, however, was quickly shut down in the third chukka; coach Andrew Beynon must’ve given his team a serious halftime talk.

His boys came out firing and upped the ante with two goals in quick succession, scored by Chree and captain Luke Tait.

Two goals to the good, Grey refused to rest on their laurels and finished the game off in the final chukka. Athi Voigt, who made his 50th appearance against Wynberg Boys’ High earlier this month, got his name on the scoresheet.

Queen’s responded late through Liso Mtalaliso, but Dante Elkington, who was in fine form all night, deservedly scored a goal to seal a 5-2 win.

While Grey dominated in Komani, Selborne College pulled off an upset in Makhanda.

Coming off an impressive 5-1 win over Dale College, coach KJ Friend’s boys entered the St Andrew’s game as the underdog but came out on top.

It was a close encounter, with very little between the sides, which is usually the case when they meet.

It took a third chukka drag flick by the reliable Reid Drake to seal the win for Selborne, and they’ll travel to Bloemfontein next weekend to face Grey College in high spirits.

In an East London derby, Hudson Park High School scored a 4-0 victory over Merrifield College.

Helio Ruiters, who netted a hat-trick a week ago versus Victoria Park, was back to his old ways and scored three again. Hlomla Ndlovu netted to complete the drubbing.

Dale College also got back to winning ways with an emphatic 5-1 triumph against Cambridge High School.

Coach Andrew Senekal’s charges were clinical and made good use of their chances. Captain Sibongisile Nzima led from the front and scored four goals, while Lihlumelo Nchukana also netted.

In Friday’s final match, Kingwood College beat Stirling High 2-1 in East London.

    RESULTS

    Grey High 5-2 Queen’s College
Selborne College 1-0 St Andrew’s College
    Hudson Park 4-0 Merrifield College
Kingswood College 2-1 Stirling High School
Dale College 5-1 Cambridge High School

St Mary’s DSG, Kloof, Durban Girls’ College (DGC), St Anne’s, and Eunice headed into the St Anne’s Cup, being hosted by St Anne’s in Hilton, as the top seeds. All four reached the semifinals last year, and they did not disappoint on day one of the 2025 event.

That quartet was unbeaten at the close of the first day of the tournament, which runs through until Sunday, when the final takes place.

Despite featuring three teams, Pool A was a two-horse race between St Anne’s and Menlopark. They took turns at competing to see who could fire more goals past the Worcester Gimnasium goalkeeper before they went head-to-head.

St Anne’s teed off first and drilled seven unanswered goals past Worcester Gim. That margin of victory was the biggest of the day until Menlopark balled out against the Western Cape side. Coach Brad Brook‘s charges were on song and rolled to a 9-0 victory.

St Anne’s and Menlopark went head-to-head later in the early evening, and the hosts sparkled on their way to a 2-0 win to secure a quarterfinal showdown against Our Lady of Fatima on Saturday morning.

St Mary’s DSG, Kloof, ruled the roost in Pool B. They got their title defence off to a positive start with a 2-1 win over The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC).

Coach Nolwazi Nkabinde’s side faced a sterner test when they went up against Waterkloof later in the day. There were moments when St Mary’s DSG Kloof found themselves under the pump as the Klofies went on the offensive.

Jenna-Leigh Freese and Ella Bowyer stood firm in the midfield and at the back, however, as St Mary’s faced down the challenge and emerged 2-1 victors, courtesy of a brace from Georgia Short. That victory secured them a quarterfinal fixture against St John’s DSG, who finished second in Pool C.

The Pietermaritzburg school came in behind Eunice in their group. Coach Nika Coertzen’s side reached the semifinals last year and the Bloemfontein girls hit the ground running in their first outing, putting on a dominant showing in a big 8-1 win over Noordheuwel.

That win was the second-highest margin of victory on day one, matching the margin recorded by St Anne’s against Worcester Gim.

Coertzen’s charges followed up that comprehensive win with a 2-1 triumph over St John’s DSG. By finishing atop Pool C, they booked a quarterfinals showdown with the Pool B runner-up, Waterkloof.

Last year’s finalists, DGC was the first side to advance to the quarterfinals. Coach Chardinay Penniston’s ladies overcame the challenges of Our Lady of Fatima and Voortrekker (Bethlehem) by identical scores.

First up, at 08:00 in the morning, they locked horns with familiar foes, Our Lady of Fatima, who gave them a good run for their money However, DGC had a little more in the tank and triumphed 2-1.

In the afternoon, DGC squared up to Voortrekker. The ladies from Bethlehem put up a good fight and enjoyed the better of the opening half, but DGC came from behind to snatch a 2-1 win.

Their reward is a tricky tie against Menlopark for a place in the semifinals.

With the winter school sports season at its peak, the City of Tshwane is set for an exciting clash on the AstroTurf between St Alban’s College and Pretoria Boys’ High School.

The schools will complete a full fixture list of matches over Friday and Saturday.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

The first teams meet in a Hyundai Friday Nite Lights clash. Last year, it was Boys High who scored a narrow victory, winning 2-1.

Coach Guy Elliott‘s St Alban’s team has put together an encouraging season. Most recently, the beat a tough Clifton College team 2-1 but then went down 0-1 to Hoërskool Garsfontein.

St Alban’s Director of Hockey Robin Jones said the blue and grey has worked diligently to prepare for the showdown with their city rivals.

“It’s been a good week of preparation. The term is in full swing after the Easter holidays, and it’s been nice to be back in a normal routine,” he declared. “Hopefully, we can translate all the work we’ve done at training into our performance on the field.”

Jones said there is healthy competition between the schools. “It is always a good atmosphere on a Friday night for this fixture,” he reckoned. “Both hockey clubs have an enormous amount of respect for one another, and it is always a fierce contest.

“We have a really good relationship with PBHS, and we are certainly looking forward to sharing some special moments when the final whistle goes.”

He added: “A win on Leseding (St Alban’s home turf) on a Friday night is always special, but our primary focus will be on putting together a solid performance. If we can do that, hopefully the result will take care of itself.”

Pretoria Boys High’s most recent match finished in a 2-0 win over Sutherland High School. Before that, they came out on the wrong end of the result against Hilton College, losing 0-1 away from home.

The 2025 hockey season has been a splendid one for Hoërskool Outeniqua‘s first-team girls’ side under the tutelage of head coach Niel Smit.

The girls from George have played some excellent hockey, scored tons of goals, and have put on a show for their supporters every week, whether playing at home or away.

They’ve already played a whopping 27 matches, recording 22 victories, one draw, and just four losses.

It’s a record they’ll want to bolster further when they host Gqeberha’s Hoërskool Framesby on Saturday morning ,at 11:00.

“I’m happy with the season so far,” coach Smit told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“With that said, we are in a small district, so to get top-quality hockey fixtures every weekend is a struggle. We would like to get more quality games regularly to improve our overall hockey performance.”

Smit’s side played two fixtures last weekend, against Langenhoven Gimnasium and Hoër Volkskool, from Graaff-Reinet. They were impressive in both outings, scoring 23 goals and conceding only two.

“I think we did achieve what we set out to do in those two games, and the results show it with a 7-0 win over Langenhoven and a 16-2 win against Volkskool.

“In fixtures like those, we try to set up certain goals in areas where we feel we can improve.”

The word “improvement” has certainly been at the heart of Outeniqua’s hockey programme in recent seasons.

Despite not regularly facing some of the best schools in the country, they still hold their own against the top guns and participate in big events, like the annual Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament.

It’s a work in progress, but coach Smit is optimistic they’re taking the right steps in growing the game at the school.

“Well, school hockey at this moment is growing at a fast pace, and it takes a lot of work to keep up with the high-flying teams and to get to their level,” he said.

“We try to start with the u14s and work towards our first teams, but that comes with its challenges.

“I think our basic layout of what we want and need to achieve is getting attention, but there is still a lot of work that needs to happen if we want to compete with the best.

“We are fielding a lot of teams, and the pool of players we can select from is growing, and depth plays a big part in the big picture.”

Against Framesby, the hosts will be led by skipper Mia Buxmann, who has over 100 caps to her name.

Carlien Oosthuizen has been firing in the goals up front. In midfield, Zanelle Rensburg will look to control the tempo of the game while Katelyn Roussouw is trusted to keep the opposition out at the back.

Coach Smit sees the Framesby clash as a chance for his team to further develop its systems and get the basics right.

“We would like to again set specific goals in areas where we feel we need to improve and focus on them to get it right for when we face stronger opponents.

“If we get our basics right and focus on our performance, I feel it would be a good weekend for us,” he ended.

This week’s Curro Halala Cup round two fixtures served to determine which 16 teams would continue on to challenge for the title at the national finals in August, at HeronBridge College, in Gauteng.

    Wednesday

On Wednesday, Hillcrest High faced a strong challenge from Durban High School (DHS) at Curro Hillcrest.

Hillcrest High has stitched together a good season thus far and they continued their winning ways, triumphing 2-0, which left coach Steve Bez, of DHS, feeling somewhat disgruntled, as his team was well-prepared for the clash.

DHS, who compete in the Coastal B-League of the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA), gave it all against an opponent that competes in the Coastal A-League and is in good form.

Banele Ngongoma opened the scoring for Hillcrest High and Thandolwethu Ndlovu made sure of the win with a screamer late in the match.

Ayedan Whitby played a crucial role in the second goal for Hillcrest High with a run in behind the defensive line before executing a cut-back pass to the edge of the box, which found Ndlovu, who then placed it in the top left corner of the net with a superb first-time shot.

After the match, Hillcrest’s coach, Cayle Marillier, told SuperSport Schools Plus that DHS presented a strong challenge, especially in the midfield.

Glenwood High School, after securing a 2-1 victory over Northwood School in the KZNHSFA Coastal A-League on Tuesday, had little time to rest. The Green Machine‘s coach, Khaya Mgwengwe, wasn’t satisfied with his team’s performance, despite the win, but they responded with an impressive display on Wednesday, charging to an astonishing 7-0 win over Curro Hillcrest.

At half-time, the score stood at 2-0, but upon returning to the field for the second half, Glenwood dominated, scoring five additional goals. Bandile Mbatha and Jaedon Davids both scored two, while Ukwazi Dludla, Mbuso Gumede and Ndalo Mbatha also netted.

On Wednesday, the Curro Halala Cup games were hosted at Curro Bloemfontein, with Grey College, Brebner High School, Navalsig and Kyrios Independent School in action.

Grey College secured a narrow 1-0 win over Kyrios, thanks to a goal from Senzo Makau, while Navalsig and Brebner needed to go to a penalty shootout after they ended regulation time at 0-0. Navalsig, then, won it 4-1 from the spot.

In Gauteng, at HeronBridge College, Clapham High School, one of the title favourites, defeated The King’s School Linbro Park 1-0 to book their place in the next round.

Curro Soshanguve and Curro Thatchfield entertained, with the Soshanguve school grabbing a 3-2 victory.

In Limpopo, in one of the week’s big surprises, Northern Academy was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Flora Park Comprehensive after the penalty shootout. It was 0-0 in regulation time and 4-3 after the spot kicks.

Also in Limpopo, HS Louis Trichardt handed Westernburg Secondary School a 4-1 loss in a dominant display.

In Mpumalanga, at Curro Nelspruit, HS Barberton edged out Lowveld High School 4-3 from the penalty spot after a goalless draw.

A penalty shootout was also needed to separate Stintile Secondary and Curro Clayville, with Stintile advancing 4-2 after neither goal scored before the shootout.

    Thursday

On Thursday, in Gauteng, Meridian Cosmo City exited the competition after a disappointing 1-2 defeat against Mondeor High.

The clash between Norkem Park and Curro Wilgeheuwel ended in a 1-1 stalemate but Norkem Park moved on 4-1 after a penalty shootout.

In the Western Cape, Meridian Pinehurst won 2-0 against Curro Somerset West 2-0, while Camps Bay defeated Milnerton High School 1-0.

Following several weeks of rescheduling, in the Eastern Cape, Westering High School claimed a 1-0 victory over Curro Westbrook, while Brylin High School beat St Mark’s High School 4-1.

A trio of high-profile cross-border clashes will light up the schools’ programme in the Eastern Province and Border regions on Saturday as old rivals prepare to square off against each other.

A massive clash looms at the Recreation Ground in Komani where Grey High will attempt to become only the second Eastern Cape side to get the better of Queen’s College this season after Pearson‘s win against Queen’s at the Graeme College Festival.

Since then, Queen’s has lost only to Cape Town team, Rondebosch Boys’ High, and coaches Clinton Loest and Tyrone Rankin have built up a sense of continuity in their team which has obvious advantages.

For the third match in a row they have named an unchanged side under the captaincy of flank Jeffrey Niland and the understanding they have created within the squad could be a big factor in meeting Grey’s challenge.

Grey, themselves, have put together a good record so far, losing only to Paul Roos and Wynberg Boys’ High in their Western Cape derbies.

With the Craven Week trials out of the way, they can now return their focus to what has become the most formidable test in Eastern Cape rugby this season.

Coach Matt King is well aware of what lies ahead: “This weekend is, perhaps, the biggest challenge we have faced since playing Paul Roos away earlier in the season,” he said.

“We are playing arguably the best team in the Eastern Cape on their home ground. The Rec is such a fortress and the Queen’s boys are so proud of their school. It’s going to be an extremely challenging afternoon for us.”

King has called on his players to play with greater precision than they did in their previous encounter against Wynberg, when they lost 27-32 in Gqeberha.

“We will need to overcome the electricity which will envelop the stadium and execute our game plan more accurately than we did in our defeat against Wynberg,” he said.

In the other two anticipated showdowns, Graeme College travels to East London to face Hudson Park, while St Andrew’s College will be seeking redemption on the Lower Field in Makhanda when they host Selborne College.

The Graemians have shown impressive form since losing to Hilton College in the Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival, racking up five wins in a row before bending the knee to St Andrew’s.

However, Hudson Park loom as a formidable test for the visitors, particularly on their home turf where they will be fired up to repeat their victory of 2023.

Graeme coach Jonty van der Meulen is still looking for better consistency across the board from his team.

“We are definitely still searching for that consistency across different facets of play,” he said. “We need to improve on those areas that didn’t go well against St Andrew’s.”

Players such as Ayola Mali, Aya Bill, Luke Doyle, and Erin Nelson have been in good form for Graeme and they will need to be at their best on Saturday to combat the bustling play of Hudson No 8 Bubbles Mtshini and the Gidi brothers, Landile and Likho.

The clash in Makhanda is shaping up to be a cracking affair with St Andrew’s eager to regain their winning touch after losing their unbeaten record to Queen’s last weekend (17-38).

In an earlier game this season, Selborne went down to Queen’s by a similar margin (22-40) and that suggests that there is little to choose between the sides for Saturday’s encounter.

Since the loss to Queen’s, Selborne has got their season back on track with hard-earned wins over Port Rex and Dale College in recent weeks, matches in which they showed the sort of character and toughness they will need when tackling St Andrew’s on Lower Field.
