  • Maritzburg College crowned champions of KZN High Schools Football League

Maritzburg College crowned champions of KZN High Schools Football League

Maritzburg College clinched their first cup in the 2023 and they did so in a spectacular fashion by defeating Linpark High School at Barns sports ground. A venue jam packed with supporters from both schools singing and chanting behind their teams.

Mazithi Qasha, Maritzburg College’s talisman and the top goal scorer in the u19 Inland fixtures was the difference maker on the final day with his goal that sealed the victory for his home side.

Despite starting shaky, and being significantly dominated throughout the first half, Maritzburg College managed to hold let alone the significant threats from the Linpark side who looked like they could score every time they had the ball.

Linpark missed several chances to bury the game in the first half, while Maritzburg College goalkeeper was put to a task throughout the evening. Linpark played with urgency and energy, capitalizing every move while Maritzburg struggled with their touches in the midfield which is one of their strongholds of their game.

Both teams went 0-0 at half, however in their first few minutes of the second half, Maritzburg College caught Linpark’s defence sleeping and Mazithi Qasha who is not afraid to put the ball in the net did not make any mistake. His goal in the final puts him as the top goal scorer in the u19 inland KZN High Schools Football League.

Despite being a goal down, Linpark fought until the last second of the game, however their efforts were in vain as Maritzburg’s defence closed all doors at the back. Linpark were awarded a freekick in the dying stages of the game from a very acute angle, right outside the box, but they failed to equalize and by then the game was already done.

Delighted scenes for the Maritzburg’s side, celebrations took after in celebration of the hard fought victory against Linpark High School.

  • Finalists for KZN Schools Coastal League confirmed

Finalists for KZN Schools Coastal League confirmed

Gqeberha – Port Shepstone High School and Glenwood High School have booked a spot in the final of the KZN Schools Coastal league that will be staged on Wednesday, 14 June 2023.

After three intense rounds of group stage fixtures in the KwaZulu-Natal Schools Coastal League, four teams progressed into the semi-final leg of the tournament.

The league was structured into two groups, ‘A’ and ‘B’, and it was apparent from the get go that it was going to be an intense competition with all eight teams keen to make the playoff stages.

Westville Boys High School topped Group ‘A’ with two wins and one draw, while Port Shepstone High School took the top spot in Group ‘B’ after winning all three group stage fixtures.

Durban High School (DHS) took the second spot in Group ‘A’, while Glenwood High School finished a spot below Port Shepstone High School in Group ‘B’.

The semi-finals were set with Westiville Boys taking on Glenwood while DHS took on Port Shepstone.

The fixtures were scheduled for 31st May but bad weather meant that the fixtures had to be rescheduled to the 7th of June 2023.

The two semis were closely competed with both games going down to the wire. As a result, both games were decided on penalties after the referees blew their whistles with scores level 0-0 in both encounters.

Ultimately, Glenwood High School came out victorious over Westville Boys High School with the penalty scoreline reading 4-3.

On the other hand, Port Shepstone booked a spot in the final after defeating DHS 3-0 on penalties on Wednesday, 7 June 2023.

The two schools, Glenwood and Port Shepstone will lock horns on Wednesday, 14 June 2023 where the championship status for the KZN coastal region will be up for grabs.

It is important to note that Port Shepstone High School are favourites going into this encounter having beaten Glenwood High School in the group stages.

But coach Khaya Mngwengwe’s Glenwood boys will know that all the pressure is on Port Shepstone to repeat their group stage performance.

  • Cambridge – the team that “could” cause an upset against Selborne College

Cambridge – the team that “could” cause an upset against Selborne College

Cambridge High School will be eyeing to cause an unexpected upset when they make the 30-minute trip down to Selborne College this coming Friday afternoon in another heated Eastern Cape derby.

Cambridge is known for their strong hockey program, having produced impressive results in recent years.

Undoubtedly, they’re the side in East London that could potentially cause an upset against the in-form Selborne side.

Their season has been one to savor, coupled with a couple of results that have made provincial selectors take note, much to the inclusion of two players (Damian Alldred and Siphesihle Nodada in the Amathole IPT squad.

They started the derby season with a hard-fought (2-1) win against Hudson Park.

Wins against Graeme College (7-0), Dale College (2-0), and a (2-2) draw against Stirling High followed suit, adding to the side’s confidence and team culture built by Tim Stirk at the school and also demonstrating the attacking style of play by the black and green boys.

Stirk’s boys, however, will be weary of the threats posed by the best side in the Eastern Cape, particularly playing in a hostile environment known for its unappealing treatment of traveling schools.

The atmosphere at the Selborne Astro is something that always seems to throw teams off and is one psychological factor the visitors need to overcome even before the first chukka kicks off.

For the home side, they come into the game as favorites on the back of five consecutive victories. KJ Friend’s troops will also be motivated to take a clean sweep in the city.

With winning on their minds, the management will stick with their strong side which has produced all season. If Cambridge are to cause an upset, they’ll certainly have to do it against the best in the region.

Kick-off between the sides is at 18:30 at the Selborne College Astro turf.

In other matches, Queens College will be back in action after a break when they take on St Andrews in Makhanda.

Graeme College makes the short trip down to King Williams Town to face a struggling Dale College side, while another local derby will see Hudson Park host Stirling High.

In Gqeberha, Woodridge College takes on Victoria Park.

    The teams:

Selborne College: Charlie Caswell, Gray van Heerden, Daniel Gaylard, Shane Stagg, Ben van der Merwe (captain), Masibulele Siswana, Tre’ Gilbert, Daniel Conroy, Jacques van der Merwe, James Carr, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, Waeden Plaatjes, Cade Kock.

Cambridge High: Sange Sakube, Sixolisiwe Qalinto (Capt.), Samkelisiwe Ndzotyana (GK), Damian Alldred, Raheem Medina, Siphelele Kewuti, Siviwe Nukwa, Siphesihle Nododa, Aqhama Mdlulwa, Unam Bolo, Ryan Henriks, Aliziwe Sokoyi, Anganathi Nyongo, Alakhe Kewuti.

    Friday 9 June

15:30 – Hudson Park vs Stirling; 15:45 – Dale College vs Graeme College; 15:45 – Woodridge vs Victoria Park; 16:00 – St Andrew’s College vs Queen’s College; 18:30 – Selborne College vs Cambridge.

  • Five fiery questions with Cameron Mackay

Five fiery questions with Cameron Mackay

Westville Boys High School is gearing up to host Durban counterparts Durban High School in their annual reunion this coming Friday at 17:00.

The Westville side has had a challenging start to the season and will be looking to get their first win in five matches after two losses against Clifton (0-1), Jeppe Boys High (2-0), and three draws against KES (2-2), Maritzburg College (2-2) and Gqeberha’s Pearson High (2-2).

Ahead of the match, SuperSport Schools held a Q&A session with the head coach, Cameron McKay, to get inside intel and an idea of how his side’s season has gone and what he looks to get out of the big match.

Q1: How would you describe your season so far? From where you started up to now? Are you satisfied?

A: Not a great season. We would have liked to achieve more than we have. We have left results out there that we know we could have done better. It has been frustrating with so many injuries and illnesses affecting the guys this season.

Q2: Coming into the season, did you come in with a new team or manage to keep the base of last season’s team?

A: We still have a few boys left from last season. We just lost some crucial players from last year that have maybe hurt us a bit this year with three guys that made national squads last year leaving.

Q3: In terms of achievements this year, are there any matches/performance that you are proud of?

A: I think the Kearsney game has been the highlight. We have only had two home games on our new turf, and that was a special one with the first big game on our new turf coupled with a good hard-working performance and three goals.

Q4: Please give us a list of 5 players to look out for in your team.

A: Keaton Burns (GK), Owen Slack (CB & KZN U18A), Warwick Field (Mid) Kade Burns (Mid), and Josh Beck (ST & KZN U18A).

Q5:  Finally, you play DHS (a side in form) this week in what is your reunion- how big is this game for the boys and the school in general, and what are you looking to do to stop them?

A:  I think we must be at our absolute best to beat them – they are a side with depth and good players all over the park. We finally have our closest full-strength team since the end of April so we should be firing with lots of support, so I hope the boys just have a little bit more in them than usual.

In other matches to look out for in the KZN region, Kearsney College host St Charles while the in-form side this season Hilton College, battles it out with arch-rivals Maritzburg College.

Michaelhouse, coached by Grant von Mayer, will play Northwood College away from home.

    The teams:

Westville Boys High: Keaton Burns, Connor Jenkins, Daniel Lambert, Owen Slack, James Dent, Sibusiso Cele, Kade Burns, Warwick Field, Caleb van Loenen, Josh Beck, Kaeden Mc Allister, Ty Matthews, Tristan Burns, Nic Ackerman, Curt Rogers, Seth Simpson.

Durban High School: Keelan Henry, Lulonke Gono, Ruben Peters, Matlhatse Sebake, Bhavesh Naicker, Lethabo Bocagwi, Leruo Ditlakhanyane, Sitchaba Siyoyo, Nathi Jona, Lumi Matwele, Aldridge Maasdorp, Liam Ruiters, Lubanzi Zulu, Tyrique Cloete, Lethabo Mathobela, Joshua Mungherera.

    Fixtures:

    Friday 2 June:

17:00 – Westville Boys High vs Durban High School

    Saturday 3 June:

10:45 – Kearsney College vs St Charles College; 11:30- Hilton College vs Maritzburg College; 11:45 – Northwood vs Michaelhouse.

  • ‘SuperSport Schools has changed school sports for the better’, says Glenwood HS coach Khaya Mngwengwe

‘SuperSport Schools has changed school sports for the better’, says Glenwood HS coach Khaya Mngwengwe

Gqeberha – Glenwood High School football coach, Khaya Mngwengwe, sang his praises for the wonderful work SuperSport Schools has done so far and gave insight on just how impactful the platform has been in the KZN region and in the country at large.

Before the SuperSport Schools plaform, a few sporting codes at the schools level became national news in the country, and even those that did, only did so on special occassions.

Besides the history-rich rugby festivals, there weren’t as many sporting codes, at school level, that had exposure in the country, at least not at the level it has reached since the inception of the SuperSport Schools platform.

Since SuperSport Schools began its journey broadcasting school sports, the landscape has taken a positive turn around as fans all over the country tune in to the livestreams and engage on social media about their favourite school players and coaches that impress week in, week out.

Glenwood High School soccer coach, Khaya Mngwengwe, told SuperSport School News in an exclusive interview that the broadcasting of school sports has changed things for the better.

“SuperSport Schools has done great things for school sports in the country,” said Mngwengwe whose u19 team qualified for the KZN Schools League semi-final.

“What I like the most is the fact that they don’t only broadcast u19 sports. They go as far as the u15’s across all sporting codes which means more and more players get exposure.

“For the schools it is a great exposure as well. Gone are the days where we’d have to wait for the Sunday newspapers for the country to be able to follow and keep track of how our favourite schools and players are doing in their respective sporting codes.” He added.

Mngwengwe emphasized how the livestreams have changed the game from a coaching point of view.

The man from KZN mentioned how the streams have made their jobs as coaches a little easier in that they now can watch opposition tactics and prepare their players accordingly.

“For us as coaches it helps in terms of formulating plans and strategies against opposition teams because now, we have access to the footage, meaning we can watch how the opposition plays and how we can counter that.

“You’ve got to make sure that your team is well prepared because now the whole world is watching and as a coach, your credibility is on the line and also your team’s reputation is on the line.” He added.

Too many times, Gauteng sport takes center stage in the country because of all the sponsorships that are involved in school sports in that region.

There’s no denying that the Gauteng region is more developed than any other region in the country and that goes hand-in-hand with the quality of players the region produces.

There’s better facilities and academies in the Gauteng region and that affords their players an advantage over any player coming from other regions in the country.

Mngwengwe acknowledged this but also mentioned that the work SuperSport Schools does also exposes the talents in the KZN region, a region where big club scouts would not necessarily prioritise.

With SuperSport Schools broadcasting school sports in the KZN region and other lesser recognised regions, scouts from around the country have more data to look into.

“It has changed things across the board for KZN football as well because now we can showcase to the country and to the world that we do have talented coaches and players and that we have a well-structured league and other tournaments down here.” He said.

Only bigger and better things are expected from all the work SuperSport Schools is doing all around the country.

Western Province announced their Craven Week teams for 2023

Western Province has announced their two teams for this year’s annual Craven Week in George.

Paarl Boys’ High has the biggest representation within the two squads with 11 players that will make the trip to the Garden Route next month.

Jameel de Jongh (winger), and JC Mars (fullback) are the only two players returning from last year’s Craven Week squad and the two Boishaai playmakers will have an important role in the team as the senior players. They were part of a strong WP side last year, winning all of their matches.

At only 17 years old, being included in both of these teams is a massive achievement for the dynamic sportsman from Stellenbosch.

Torren February, who was a flanker for the Grant Khomo team in 2022 has been selected for the WP XV.

These teams are still subject to change and the coaches will look forward to the Western Cape Bondedag, where they will be able to run their final trials and finalize selections. The fixtures for that event are still to be announced.
