Two goals in the fourth quarter by Masibulele Siswana and Waden Plaatjes secured a 3-1 victory for Selborne College over their arch-rivals Queens College in the 165th Queens College reunion at the Chris Harker Astro in Komani on Saturday.
The two sides, who have had an impressive start to the season, were looking to continue in their respective forms and claim bragging rights for the next four months.
One may argue that Selborne entered the game as the underdog for the first time in a while, especially considering Queens’ recent success and wins over Dale, Affies, and Michaelhouse.
A week before the reunion match, Queens thumped Stirling High 5-1, and Selborne drew 1-1 with Pearson High.
Selborne was the more proactive side early on, probing the Queens defensive line and trying to force errors from the hosts.
The East London side had one attempt at goal to show for their efforts, saved by Queens keeper Rowan Miles. That was the only threat at goal, with nothing to separate the two sides at the end of the first chukka.
Both teams continued to rely on the counterattack and turnovers in the second quarter. The breakthrough came from a short corner that was whipped in by Daniel Sirgel and fell onto the stick of captain Ben van der Merwe, who put the ball into the goal with ease.
That goal sparked life into the Queens team. With one minute played in the third quarter, the home side equalized with a tap-in goal from Connor Oelofse.
That would be the last time Queens saw the sight of the Selborne goal, as the home side dominated the fourth quarter. Another short corner resulted in Masibulele Siswana extending the visitor’s lead before a solid counterattack led to Waden Plaatjes being one-on-one with the keeper, and he rounded him to slot in his first of the game.
Try as they might, Queens couldn’t get back into the match, which ended 3-1.
Besides the goal scorers, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, and Riley Boardman played well for Selborne. Rowan Miles, and Keaneo Maytham put their hands up for the home side.
In other fixtures in the Eastern Cape, Grey High School humiliated Dale College 9-0 on Friday night.
Pearson High continued its dominance by beating Stirling High 6-1 before Cambridge High made it two wins in a row by thumping Graeme 7-0.
Hudson Park also recorded a 9-0 victory over their noisy neighbors, Port Rex, while earlier in the week, Pearson also asserted their dominance with an 8-0 Win over Westering.

Hoërskool Pietersburg had a successful weekend of netball adrenalin.
PHS participated in the Capricon League games against Hoërskool Noorderland on Tuesday.
The girls displayed an incredible performance by winning all their games.
The u17A team won their game 34-6. It was a good exercise in preparation for the u19 mini World Cup tournament that would take place on Wednesday.
The tournament was hosted at Ngoako Ramahlodi Sports Complex in Seshego.
Each district had 16 countries to represent for the teams participating in the national netball world cup. PHS represented the country Fiji and walked away with the golden first position.

In what was one of the most anticipated matches of the day, Johannesburg was entertained to yet another close encounter by two of South Africa’s premier schools.
KES carried on their winning ways by securing an extremely tight 23-20 win over rivals Jeppe High School for Boys.
The opening try of the day came courtesy from the sort of maul that we are becoming accustomed to seeing from Jeppe. The Black and White, powered their way across the line with Kaleb Burger placing the ball down neatly to open the account. Dikarabela Moeketsi added to the Jeppe scoreline after breaking through the KES defense.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, winger Timi Oluwole, scored a much needed try to ensure that KES could claw their way back into the match. Oluwole was back in the middle of things by making a superb run and offloading to a hungry Ruan Van Rensburg who scored the second try.
Jeppe’s Exauce Kevani and Thulani Shabalala both scored fantastic tries to take the score to 20-16 with five minutes left on the clock.
In the final passage of play, KES created a huge overlap opportunity from a line-out which was easily gathered and was sent across the field where substitute winger and hero of the day Mbuso Methula snatched at the opportunity presented from Muyo and scored the final try of the match.
Fly half, Vusi Muyo the puppeteer was instrumental in pulling the strings throughout the match creating some space and distributing the ball and putting his team mates in good positions.
Kicking for poles separated these two sides with Jeppe missing two crucial kicks which cost them several points. Jeppe forward Joseph Zulu made a welcome return not having played since picking up an injury at Noord-Suid earlier in the season.
The Reds Field was packed with supporters from both sides, which provided an electric atmosphere all throughout the match. Yet another historic finish between these two famous schools.

PRETORIA.

These two Johannesburg titans, should provide spectators with a closely contested match with both teams carrying over some good form with several wins under the belt in their recent outings last weekend and at the Easter Rugby Festivals. Last year saw two fixtures played against each other with KES coming out on top on both occasions with scores of 27-26 and 19-6.
However this year Jeppe look like a side who are going to compete and are fresh off of a scintillating win over Monument last weekend where the team won by six points and showed that they could keep up with the physicality of the boys from Krugersdorp.
Jeppe will be looking at fly half Matthew Coetzee to feed destructive outside center Exauce Kevani with opportunities to break through the KES backline. He has shown some great running ability and will need to be kept under wraps if KES look for a win at home. Jeppe have made one replacement to their starting XV, eighth man Nathan Boyder makes way for Mosiki Ndlaba.
Jeppe will look at making sure that a greater percentage of their place kicks are converted as that would be one area the team and coaching staff would have felt they could have done better in during last week’s fixture. Securing points from the boot might be what makes the difference between the two teams in the end.
Last week KES beat Pretoria Boys High School at home, in what was a fiercely competitive match but the Reds coming out on top with a 28-19 win. KES have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with having put up a strong fight against Paarl Boishaai in the recently concluded KES Easter Festival.
KES will be looking at flanker and captain Thandolwethu Biyela to marshall the troops and inspire the team when things get tough. All eyes will be on the Red Army’s winger, the speed demon Timi Oluwe. He has shown that he is not scared to go up a gear, when it is needed.
Will The Red Army be able to hold the fort again for a second week in a row or will Jeppe come out all guns blazing? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for certain Johannesburg is in for a treat.

Maritzburg College, make the long bus trip up to Pretoria to face The Candies on Brooks Field and a long standing tradition where the boys eagerly await these sort of exchanges.
Being on the road from home adds a layer of excitement to these sorts of fixtures and always poses a challenge to the visiting team.
Maritzburg come into the fixture having won five out of eight fixtures this season, compared to Pretoria Boys’ who have won five from seven.
Maritzbug last weekend beat Clifton College by 33-5, where Pretoria Boys’ lost a highly competitive fixture away at KES. Both teams played up against Nelspruit at the St Johns’ College Easter Festival and each won their respective matches. This should be an evenly contested game.
Boys High scrum-half Josh Naude has played some well fought and grubby rugby. Under the guidance of former Sharks coach and old boy, Mr Paul “The Lion” Anthony, Naude has some serious knowledge to tap into.
Springbok 2007 World Cup winning captain John Smit and Chiliboy Rallephele both played under his wing when he coached the side in the early 2000’s.
Current hooker and captain, Shaun Schurmann, will be looking at adding to his impressive previous performances this season. Schurmann will be packing down on the side of the scrum for Saturday’s clash.
Maritzburg inside center Nkuleleko Sithole and winger Colm Reardon are two players to keep on the radar. Both of these backline players are quick with good ball-handling abilities. U17 Sharks player, Elbert Mouton should provide a quality match-up against Boys High’s Schrumann during the scrums.
The teams will be eager to get out onto the field and demonstrate their class. At halftime it is guaranteed that Swing Low Sweet Chariot will echo across the fields of Boy High but what of the result?
That will ultimately come down to who shows the most amount of grit on the day.
In another Noordvaal Clash, Hoërskool Centurion take on Midstream College at home with the 1st XV game kicking off at 12:30 pm. Centurion will be looking to extend an impressive winning streak of five on the trot to six. Midstream however would want to end this and build on the good start that they too have had this year.

The semi-finals of the NWU Prestige series have arrived, after an enthralling quarter-final round last weekend.
Oos-Moot defeated Hoërskool Rustenburg by 37-30 in the quarter-finals to cause a stunning upset, completely shaking up the groups and adding even more excitement to the tournament.
Coach Braam Pretorius’ team played excellently against the big boys from Rustenburg, managing to score three tries courtesy of their electric wingers, Ewald Wolmarans and Tapiwa Rwafa, and their centre, Ruwan Allen.
But it was the trusty boot of flyhalf, Charl van der Sluis, that made the difference in this epic encounter, with their unfaltering number ten converting two tries and five penalties, and adding a superb 47m drop-goal à la Jannie de Beer for a total of 22 points for his team.
The Rusties played well and should be favourites to win the playoffs for fifth now.
Lorenzo Snyers (winger) has been excellent all season, and played a major role again, scoring a try and adding two conversions and two penalty kicks for his team.
Reigning champs, Noordheuwel, managed to beat Die Anker in a try-scoring bonanza 69-22 with 15 tries scored between the two teams.
Their centre, Marshall de Vos, played an unforgettable game, crossing the line four times for the Nories, and flyhalf, JT Kapank, was prominent again, adding 14 points through conversions.
Though they are still definite favourites to defend their title, they should heed the warning of the Oos-Moot victory, the oval ball can do funny things in knockout rugby and no team is guaranteed a place in the final.
The next round takes place this Saturday at Hugenote in Springs and Die Anker in Brakpan, where Oos-Moot faces Middelburg High School, who reach the semi-finals after a hard-fought victory over Marais Viljoen, and Noordheuwel plays against Heidelberg Volkies, who also exceeded all expectations, beating Wesvalia in the quarter-finals.
Middelburg High also relied on their kicker, Divan van der Westhuizen, who added 14 points off the tee in their 24-11 victory over Marais Viljoen.
The importance of the kickers in all the quarter-final matches highlights the competitiveness of this tournament and is a great service to South African rugby in general, as the professional game has been emphasizing the role of the kicker for quite some time now, and depth and stability at the flyhalf position often making the difference in big matches.
Heidelberg Volkskool underlined this point, having to make use of two kickers, Keane Duckitt (flyhalf) and Kayle Venter (centre) to secure their one-point winning margin over Wesvalia.
As we approach the business end of the tournament the stakes are higher than ever, and this weekend’s matches promise to repeat the excitement of the previous round to determine the two teams who will be vying for the ultimate prize.
The semifinalists are:
Noordheuwel: 15 Jade Muller, 14 Keaton van Deventer, 13 Marshall de Vos, 12 Jared Coetzee, 11 Divan Cruywagen, 10 JT Kapank, 9 Coun-Lee Koekman, 8 Marco Maree, 7 Ludie Schutte, 6 Jaun Fourie, 5 Donavan Breedt, 4 Rudolph Coetzee, 3 Martin Nel, 2 Jaundre Schoeman, 1 Meyer Opperman.
Heidelberg Volkies: 15 Joshua Booysen, 14 Tristan la Grange, 13 Kyle Venter, 12 Ruduwaan Rodgers, 11 Rhys Thompson, 10 Keane Duckitt, 9 AJ Engelbrecht, 8 Daniel Jordaan, 7 Joshua Munro, 6 Francois le Roux, 5 Dylan Stuart, 4 Wilco Janse van Rensburg, 3 Lian Pelzer, 2 Dian la Grange, 1 Handre Strydom.

Northwood and Durban High School both had a victory this past weekend, but now its time for the champions to battle it out.
It was a historical first when Northwood defeated Glenwood on their home ground this past Saturday.
With such strong efforts coming from both sides, the half time score was 12-7 and it could have gone either way.
Cade Latham managed to put another try on the board for Northwood with just minutes left to go, this combined with their strong defensive effort which kept Glenwood at bay, made sure they would secure the victory.
A victory that would go down in the history books. The full time tally was 29-22 in The Knights favour, a very well deserved outcome and one that would surely fuel their energy for the games to come.
Durban High School is entering the battlefield with accolades of their own. Durban also took a victory on the previous Saturday, when they went up against Westville Boys’ High. They got to work and did what was necessary to defeat Westville by 24-20.
DHS is on quite the winning streak, taking the upper hand in all three of their last games, and seven wins in total this season. Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival provided one of these successes, when Durban beat Framesby at 31-10, showing that they have come to play this season.
It should provide some excellent, competitive rugby when these schools go head-to-head.
Glenwood and Michaelhouse are paired together this weekend. Michaelhouse has shown that they are playing truly respectable rugby this season, they are absolutely dominating their competition and taking down whoever gets in their way.
At the Saints Sports Fest, Michaelhouse bagged three victories and did so with style. Their game was aggressive yet joyful, they were very tactical and skilled but had great fun doing it. You can expect players such as Leo Muziva, Campbell Ridl and Luke Davidson to have a big impact on the scoreboard.
Glenwood has all-in-all played really decent rugby this year as well, their backline is bringing incredible pace and they are placing their squad exactly as they should. Unfortunately, you can’t win every game, but the Green Machines have managed to secure five victories this year. One thing is for sure, they will be looking for a sixth this Saturday.
Hilton College is up against St Charles College, and Hilton’s spirit should be high as they just succeeded in earning two victories at the St John’s Easter Festival. St Charles are also taking the field as victors, after defeating St Benedict’s College 31-9 on the 8th of April, also at the St John’s Easter Festival. On Saturday, one institution will earn another victory.
Kearsney College and Westville Boys’ High will be taking the field together.
Kearsney defeated Clifton 19-10 for their first match of the year, and, although a rematch could have made for great entertainment, their game versus Westville should be just as exciting. Westville recently took an excellent 22-10 victory over EG Jansen.
Both Westville and Kearsney have four victories so far, which makes this game even more interesting.
Clifton School and St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown will also be playing this weekend. Clifton will be fighting for a redemptive win.
Although Clifton has had some great tactical play this year, the competition has put up a great fight. It is still early, and there is still time to turn things around. This may be that very turning point.
St Andrew’s did earn a respectable 43-21 victory over St John’s Harare on the second day of the Saints Sports Fest, but they will definitely be looking to add another win to their collection come game day.
Gelofte Skool will also be hosting and competing against Kuswag Skool this Saturday, in case there was not enough action for you to choose from already.
10:45 – Gelofte vs Kuswag 12:15 – Clifton School vs St Andrew’s College 14:00 – St Charles College vs Hilton College
14:20 – Durban High School vs Northwood 15:00 – Michaelhouse vs Glenwood High School 15:10 – Westville Boys’ High vs Kearsney College
