  • Monnas’ SA Schools A-lock makes his return against Jeppe

Monnas’ SA Schools A-lock makes his return against Jeppe

Monument makes the short trip to Jeppe High School for Boys where the two teams are set to come head-to-head in this exciting fixture on the Collard Field.  The first XV’s kick-off at 13:35 and should not be missed.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com). The direct link to the matches are underneath the articles.

Monnas have been in fine form at the start of this season, securing several important victories in their last few matches.

Most notably beating a strong Paul Roos Gimnasium at the NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid tournament which took place in Pretoria recently, where they won convincingly 44-19. At last weekend’s Kearsney College Easter Festival the boys from Krugersdorp won three out of three of their matches beating Framesby (28-7), Dale College (41-5) and Hoërskool Noord-Kaap (50-5).

Flyhalf, Daylon Myners, has been kicking well for his side and is definitely a player that Jeppe will need to keep a tab on.

They say all good scrumhalfs have a lot to say on the field, but when their performances outshine all the mouthiness that comes with the position, it really is a treat for fans to watch.

Monnas’ number nine and Player of the Kearsney Easter Festival, Ceano Everson has been in some good form but will not feature today. The Wit Bulle will also be without their captain and flanker, Morne Venter.

Good news however is that SA Schools A-side lock Uli van der Westhuizen makes a much anticipated return to the side having not played since the Noordvaal-final of 2022.

Jeppe go into this match having won two games at the  St John’s College Easter Festival and losing their only match to Maritzburg College where they showed some serious fight throughout the match.

They beat Graeme College by 27-17, while flyhalf  Lethabo Kekana is a player who reads the game well. It was evident last weekend where he scored a try from his own chip outside centre, Exauce Kevani, has the ability to score break-away tries showing off  good ball-handling skills, his stocky frame gives him the advantage of running through the strongest of defenses.

He is a dangerous backline player, who can make an impact.

The match should provide some real entertainment and will be closely followed by many school rugby fans. Monnas will be looking to increase their winning streak whilst powerhouse Jeppe will be itching at the opportunity of  knocking the Wit Bulle from the top of their pedestal.

Glenwood and Northwood are both riding high from Easter Festival victories, now it’s time for a faceoff.

Glenwood recently defeated Dale College (19-7) at the Standard Bank Kearsney College Easter Festival.

Their team is looking formidable this season, they also put up a great fight at the annual NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord-Suid tournament in Pretoria.

Catch all this weekend’s matches on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com). The direct link to the first team matches are below this article.

Northwood also recently bagged themselves a couple victories, beating Hudson Park (31-13) and Ben Vorster of Tzaneen 30-15 at the Standard Bank King Edward VII Easter Festival.

Glenwood are playing quick and aggressive rugby this season, giving anyone who opposes them a challenge. This should be a great game of rugby as both sides bring their best. The Grasshoppers’ fullback, Jaco Williams, has had an impressive season so far.

If this is not enough excitement for the rugby fans, Clifton is hosting Maritzburg College at a Saturday Derby; a first in their school’s history.

Maritzburg just won all three of their games at the St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival, and you can rest assured they are hoping to continue this streak. Clifton will need to bring their A-game from start to finish if they want to defeat Maritzburg, whose reputation precedes them.

They say good things come in threes, and that holds true this weekend.

Westville Boys’ High will be contending with Durban High School in another great match up this Saturday. Westville did defeat EG Jansen (22-10) on Monday showing their dominance.

DHS is not going into this game without their own accolades, as they just beat Marlow Landbou (32-25). They played hard until the very end for the victory, and that is what both these schools will need to do if they want to be named champions come game day.

Welkom Gimnasium: 15 Naylen Goeda, 14 Naven Goeda, 13 Taschon Meas, 12 Jayden Weideman, 11 Khamohelo Mokoena, 10 Renaldo Kiewiet, 9 Julian Samuels. 8 Ethan Jones, 7 Rylen Kirsten, 6 Revoun van Niekerk, 5 Jayden Auld, 4 Tristan Appollis, 3 Keanan August, 2 Dante Smith, 1 Buchle Ngxabayi.

Hentie Cilliers: 15 Andisile Mentz, 14 Tshireleletso Porota, 13 Itumeleng Kogo, 12 Bongi Ngidi, 11 Ashwon Mellen, 10 Paseka Mokoena, 9 Meguel Davids, 8 Valter Veale, 7 Samson Nthantumbo, 5 Anzani Mokhotu, 4 Gift Gubai, 3 Lungile Samson, 2 Jose Sebia, 1 Lerato Mabona.

    Ander kragmetings (tuisspanne eerste vermeld):

    13:30 – Voortrekker (Bethlehem) vs Hoërskool Trio; 13:30 – Goudveld-Hoërskool vs Witteberg.

  • In form Kwaggas and Grey College to face each other in a titanic battle

In form Kwaggas and Grey College to face each other in a titanic battle

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

After the early fixtures and the NMI Toyota Menlyn North/South tournament at Affies at the beginning of the month it is clear that, Outeniqua and Grey College, are the standout teams so far this season.

As fate would have it, these two teams face each other this weekend to remove any speculation as to how they would compare to one another.

Bloemfontein’s rugby factory, Grey College, travels to George this weekend to face Outeniqua for what promises to be one of the games of the year.

Watch the match live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com)

Although some of the other big guns like Paarl Boys’ High and Garsfontein might still have something to add to the conversation.

Grey have started their campaign firing on all cylinders with a team that has been playing together since the World Schools Festival at the end of 2022.

This year they have already done away with the likes of Paarl Gimnasium (33-12) and Maritzburg College (37-24), and it looks like it will take a special effort to prevent another perfect season for the boys from Bloem.

Outeniqua is a team that specializes in big moments though and strong wins over Monument (32-27) and Noordheuwel (18-14) have stated their intent for their centenary year. Beating Grey for the fourth time in their history, at home, in their 100th year, would be the perfect way to celebrate the immense growth of their rugby program.

Grey is accustomed to being the number one target though, and has a history of spoiling many a school’s “dream season”.

Their forward pack, led by their captain and eighthman, JJ Theron, have been exemplary this year, not only scoring many of Grey’s tries but also creating a solid platform to allow the likes of Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf), Benito Goeda (centre) and Vincent Wolhuter (fullback) to perform their magic in the backline.

Players like JT Strydom (fullback) and Estiaan Cronje (centre) have been involved in some spectacular backline play for Outeniqua in their previous fixtures and the home team will want to play the game at a high pace to allow their backline to showcase their talent, but it will be up to their forwards to secure quick ball against the Grey pack.

There will also be an interesting battle in the front as the Kwaggas’ SA Schools loosehead prop, Ruan Swart, take on Jean Erasmus in the scrums. Swart who is originally from the City of Roses and attended Jim Fouche before joining Outeniqua would’ve probably never made it to Craven Week if he stayed in the Free State.

The two teams have met on ten previous occasions, with the side from George winning two of those matches in 2005 and 2013.

Their previous encounter, last year, was called off after 35 minutes of play due to the danger of lighting, but Grey already had a solid 21-3 lead at that point.

That game, in Bloemfontein, was meant to be the first of what will hopefully become an annual fixture between the two and this year’s meeting will go a long way towards deciding whether such an inter could be feasible for both schools.

With the success of Outeniqua’s rugby program over recent years, producing players like Warrick Gelant, Manie Libbok, Akker van der Merwe and Duhan van der Merwe, and Grey’s sustained success over its history, this will be a highly competitive pairing and would be a welcome addition to the calendar.

    The teams:

Outeniqua: 15 JT Strydom, 14 JJ Daters, 13 Ashwin Damons, 12 Estiaan Cronje, 11 Keenan Jantjies, 10 Andrew Stopforth, 9 Jamil Pretorius, 8 Brendan Gouws, 7 Dewald Gerber, 6 Jefwinn Wesso, 5 Michael Cronje, 4 Jayden Potgieter, 3 Juan Kleynhans, 2 Nathan Smit, 1 Ruan Swart.

Grey College: 15 Vincent Wolhuter, 14 Hayden Tolmay, 13 Benito Goeda, 12 Pieter van der Merwe, 11 Martin Botha, 10 Ian van der Merwe, 9 Christiaan van der Westhuizen, 8 JJ Theron, 7 Keegan Scholtz, 6 Jean-Henri Smit, 5 Marno Stopforth, 4 Heinrich Theron, 3 Jean Erasmus, 2 Liam van Wyk, 1 Ranon Fouché.

  • Reddam Constantia wins the Challenge Cup against South Peninsula

Reddam Constantia wins the Challenge Cup against South Peninsula

There has been a rise and growth in the women’s football fraternity in the past decades. School tournaments and leagues at the grassroots level are making the future of tomorrow.

The Reddam Football Challenge Cup saw a game of magnitude as Reddam Constantia hosted South Peninsula u19. The fans were entertained by a game that produced several goals.

In the first half, both teams failed to capitalise on mistakes as the game went to a half-time deadlock at 0-0. In the second half, Reddam opened the scoring through a quick throw-in and a beautiful cross by the winger and the goal was scored near the far post.

South Peninsula came back stronger after conceding and made no mistake in a counter-attack to score an equaliser in the 29th minute to make it 1-1. A few minutes later, Peninsula made it 2-1 and went all the way to win the game as they came back from 1-0. The game ended 2-1 in favour of South Peninsula.

  • Michaelhouse flexes their strategic repertoire with victory over St Albans

Michaelhouse flexes their strategic repertoire with victory over St Albans

    PHOTO: Debbi Adcock

Diocesan College and Clifton started us off for the first game of day three at the Standard Bank St Stithians Easter Festival, with Bishops taking their third win of the festival in a phenomenal fashion.

The coaching personnel for Bishops flexed their tactical muscles today and showed what you can achieve when you utilize everything at your disposal.

The talent in Bishops first team is not only palpable, but perfectly positioned and timed.

Gilermo Mentoe was once again on fire this morning, booting four conversions alongside scoring a try for his side. Kashief Joseph played brilliantly as flyhalf in the first half, when he succeeded in landing a try for Bishops.

Haashim Pead, however, was swapped in as flyhalf for the next thirty minutes and also succeeded in scoring a try. Winger Lucca Mynhardt obviously put five points on the board with a try, and Wakeem Fortuin managed two tries as well. The sheer brilliance really showed when Bishops scored their final twelve points in the last minute and a half of the game.

Even with Clifton’s fight and grit, Bishops came out on top today.

Wynberg Boys’ High played Northcliff in the second game and gave them an absolute hiding; beating them 41-0. Unfortunately for Northcliff, there is no chance for redemption, with today being the last day of the festival.

Wynberg played with great unity; they also played a truly unselfish game as a whole. The backline were really showing off their pace and coordination; with Ethan Thomas (outside centre) earning a hat trick of tries.

We also got to experience some lovely tries from Amier Adams (inside centre), Bibo Mawkendi (prop) and Nicholas van Schalkwyk (hooker).

All players with different strengths. That was the secret to their success. They did not care how the points got on the board or who played the final role in putting them there, they all supported each other in each play and helped their brothers to succeed for the good of the team. That is what rugby’s all about.

One does still need to mention the flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed’s kicking game. Getting three conversions and a penalty through the poles is no small feat.

The third game went exactly as you’d expect if you’ve been following Michaelhouse this season. We already know they will not allow any losses this season, and they certainly did not when they defeated St Alban’s College by 40-10 today.

Sometimes there are intangible qualities of a team that make them exceptional to watch; and oh boy does Michaelhouse have just that.

They are just so entertaining on the field. We already know we would get some great tries from Leo Muziva (winger) and Campbell Ridl (outside centre), with some big forwards, Luthando Buthelezi (prop) and Wandile Mlaba (eighthman), also earning one and two tries respectively.

In an exceptional play; Michaelhouse’s flyhalf, Josh Aissing, used magician-like slight of hand to perform a behind the back pass to their eighthman, Mlaba, leading to a highlight reel worthy try.

It brought a smile to their faces and ours.

It was one of those moments that could make anyone love the art of rugby. Michaelhouse is playing a witty, fantastically tactical game; and best of all, they’re having a great time doing it.

Helpmekaar made the highveld proud today when they defeated Kingswood College 31-5. Everyone has been looking forward to the moment when Helpmekaar really shows what they can do, and today was that day.

This may be a turning point for them this season; as a great victory can be a truly unifying experience for a team. Inside centre, Michael Benzien’s kicking was on point, as per usual. His performance was flawless as he converted every try.

What was fascinating, was the role that the forwards played in putting tries on the board. Every single one was touched down by a forward. The team really seemed to find their stride today and come together for an excellent game of rugby.

If they can keep this up and use today as a frame of reference going forward, this could be a very strong season for the Helpies.

Although Kingswood College has been a great squad to watch at this festival and are playing really effectively, the victory simply did not go their way today.

The final game between St Stithians College and St John’s Harare had much riding on it, it was the last game of the festival and St Stithians were surely hoping for a comeback.

Unfortunately for the hosts, the boys from up north took the win as the game ended at 15-7 is St John’s favour.

At least the long trip was not for nothing, as St John’s can return home proudly with two wins. The game was interrupted by lightning and bad weather, but that would not stop either team from giving it their all or break their spirit. St John’s number eight, Joshua Galant, showed his brute force when he scored them two tries.

Outside centre, Stefan Kruger, took a different approach as he ran full throttle, flaunted his pace and scored a try for his side. St Stithians did fight back, with their lock Francois Botes landing them a try which was easily converted by none other than captain and flyhalf, Chris Anderson.

The final day of the festival provided some excellent matchups and was really great to watch. This is looking like a really competitive season coming up with some really strong, combatant squads.

Who knows what the future holds, but man are we excited to find out.

    Scorers:

St John’s College (Harare) 15 (5) – Tries: Joshua Galant (2), Stefan Kruger. St Stithians College 7 (7) – Try: Francois Botes. Conversion: Chris Anderson.

Michaelhouse 40 (26) – Tries: Campbell Ridl (2), Wandile Mlaba (2), Luthando Buthulezi, Leo Muziva. Conversions: Luke Davidson (5). St Alban’s College 10 (3) – Tries: John-Joshua Steenkamp. Conversion: Josh Verster. Penalty: Josh Verster.

  • Kearsney falls short while Glenwood, Westville, and Monnas finish KERF unbeaten

A spirited second-half comeback by Kearsney College wasn’t enough as they went down 26-24 to UK’s Hartpury College on the final day of the Standard Bank Kearsney College Easter Festival at the Scott field on Monday.

The hosts were eager to make it back-to-back wins after edging Dr. EG Jansen 17-12 on day two.

Their pursuit for victory started in the worst way possible after being forced to defend in their half for ten minutes.

Things got worse soon for the Durban side as Hartpury received a penalty inside Kearsney’s 22 meter and opted for a lineout. From there on, the visitor’s maul collapsed, and they quickly played the ball through the hands until it reached deadly winger Dan Williams who dotted in the far-left corner for his side’s first of the game.

It only took the visitors two minutes to add another try as lock Joe Pauling crashed over after his side retained the ball from the kick-off.

The UK side scored again in the 22nd minute to take a 19-0 lead before Kearsney flank James Francke dotted down in the corner after intelligent play from wing Junior Dlamini who kept the ball in the field to bring the home side back into the contest.

Hartpury led 19-5 at the interval.

The second stanza saw Kearsney make several changes with two props, Anele Cele and Luca Veronesi, alongside scrumhalf Chad Croshaw making their way to the field, and they made an immediate impact.

Their scrums started improving while Croshaw contributed a try, converting it much to the delight of the home supporters.

The home side pushed hard and scored twice through Roydan Madatt and Jack Rankin.

However, with a minute left, it was too late as the earlier try by Hartpury skipper Mason Watkin proved to be the difference.

The home side fell two points short, finishing what they’ll consider a disappointing festival after winning one out of three matches.

Sonny Greenman and Dan Williams stood out for Hartpury, while Chad Croshaw will be proud of his performance from the bench.

Other results on day three saw victories for Glenwood, Westville, and Monument as the powerhouse teams left the festival with 100% win rates.

The three sides have been impressive from day one, and on the final day scored 120 points between them, with Glenwood being the big winners by beating Worcester Gimnasium 57-8.

The Green Machine were superb in attack, scoring as early as the first minute through hooker Keagan Goosen, who crashed over after great play from Andrew Martins and center Okonto Chijundu.

The onslaught continued from the Durban side when captain Lithemba Mfupi and prop counterpart Bongani Dlamini displayed dominance in their ball carrying while gaining metres over the advantage line.

Mfupi was inspirational, scoring a try of his own before a score by center MJ Schoeman saw the Durbannites rush to a 19-0 lead in 13 minutes.

Gimnasium tried to fight their way back into the encounter but managed only three points from the boot of Carick Kustoor before another try by lock Liam Terblanche saw Glenwood lead 26-3 at the break.

Glenwood then turned up the notch in the second stanza, scoring 31 points. Schoeman and Terblanche doubled their tallies, while late tries by replacements Zukisani Tom and William van Vuuren put the icing on the cake.

Having led 10-5 at the break, Hoèrskool Monument produced a spectacular second-half display to brush off Dale College by 41 points to 5 in their last game at Kearsney.

The men from King Williams Town suffered a huge blow early in the game when outside center Athenkosi Msileni saw red for a dangerous tackle (head contact) on a Monnas player.

Despite keeping themselves in the game in the first half, ill-discipline cost Dale in the second stanza. Their defence opened up, and it rained tries as Ceano Everson (2), Jamal Feldman, Jody Schambreel, and Nathan Venter scored to seal the victory in style.

In another highly contested matchup, Westville scored 12 unanswered points in the second half to record a 22-10 win over the festival’s underachievers Dr. EG Jansen. Fullback Tshegofatso Ramaloko and center Likhona Finca were influential in the tries scored by their team.

Durban High also finished on a high, edging out Marlow, 32-25 with a try at the death by the center, Zingce Simka.

Gqeberha’s Hoèrskool Framesby was also amongst the winners on the final day. An inspirational performance by seasoned campaigner Logan Muller and tries by Sean Vermaak, Tiaan Pretorius, Hein Terblanch, Logan Muller, and Ryan Rousseau sealed a 35-5 victory for the side.
