Hoërskool Waterkloof snatched another victory at the death during the annual NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid-tournament in Pretoria.

Klofies defeated Glenwood High School by 32-28 in a closely contested encounter at Affies. Flanker Dewald Muller scored the match-winning try with seconds left on the clock.

Muller also scored a few minutes earlier to bring his side within touching distance of Glenwood.

Klofies definitely have become the Harry Houdinis of schoolboy rugby. They’ve also bagged a last minute victory on the first day of the festival against HTS Drostdy (22-19) thanks to a last-minute penalty by Franco Cronje.

Last year during the Wildeklawer-tournament in Kimberley the Klofies also pulled a rabbit out of the hat to produce victories over Diamantveld (19-17) and HTS Drostdy (15-14).

Besides Muller the hooker, Stephan Jacobsz, as well as the prop Luan Brown could feel more than content with their performances.

For Glenwood their fullback, Jaco Williams, looked impressive everytime he got the ball in hand. He troubled the team from Pretoria with his elusive running from the back. He rounded off his try after a movement that he started himself in his side’s 22.

Winger Okanta Chijindu also performed well on attack and crossed the tryline once to take his tally for this year’s tournament to five tries. Glenwood eighthman, Zukisani Tom, also produced a solid performance and scored a try which he could brag about for the rest of the year.

Dr. EG Jansen of Boksburg secured a narrow 23-22 against HTS Drostdy in the first match of the third day of the NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid-tournament.

The Jansies enjoyed a 15-10 lead at the break in a clash that could’ve went either way. The team from Boksburg probably deserved a bigger lead at the break, but they couldn’t manage to convert their attacking possession into more points.

EG’s eighthman, Nathan Matthee, as well as lock Reon Pretorius performed really well in the victory. For Drostdy their flanker Etienne Claasen deserves a pat on the back for his performance.

    Scorers:

Waterkloof 32 (15) – Tries: Dewald Muller (2), Sjaan Steyn, Stephan Jacobsz, Happy Makate. Conversions: Franco Cronje (2). Peanlty: Cronje. Glenwood 28 (15) – Tries: Jaco Williams, Okanta Chijindu, Zukisani Tom. Conversions: Johandre van Rooyen (2). Penalties: Van Rooyen (3).

Hou gerus Noordheuwel se heelagter, Cheswill Jooste, dop.

  • Grey College bag famous victory over Paarl Gim during Noord/Suid

Grey College bag famous victory over Paarl Gim during Noord/Suid

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

If there was any doubt – one thing is for sure and that is that Grey College means business this year.

The team from Bloemfontein equaled their biggest ever victory over Paarl Gimnasium when they emphatically won the clash by 33-12 between the two sides during the opening day of the NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid-tournament in Pretoria.

This equaled the victory of 34-13 back in 2005. What made today’s victory even more impressive was the fact that Paarl Gimnasium won the previous two encounters in 2022 (22-17) and 2021 (18-16).

They were without a doubt eyeing a third successive victory over their Bloemfontein counterparts.

Earlier in the day when Gimmies’ second stringers also managed to defeat Grey it seemed that the goal of three victories on the trot was not that far off. Fast-forward a couple of hours down the line and the 21 points difference tell a whole other story.

The pack of forwards of Grey College is without a doubt one of their weapons this season. Their eighthman, JJ Theron, showed his class and scored a brace of tries. But the whole pack of forwards deserve a pat on the back for laying the foundation for this famous victory.

The lock Marno Stopforth was also outstanding.

For Paarl Gimnasium their flyhalf, Kyle Smith, as well as their hooker, Jannie Grobbelaar, could feel happy with their performances.

Glenwood secured a 39-33 victory over Hoërskool Nelspruit earlier in the day with their right wing, Okanta Chijundu, dotting down four times.

The Nelspruit Rhinos’ right wing, Ian Wood, also completed a hat-trick of tries as his team fought back in the second half. The Grasshoppers led comfortably by 21-7 at the break.

Besides Chijundu the victors centre Johandre van Rooyen as well as the fullback, Jaco Williams, enjoyed solid performances.

It was clear that not one of the sides wanted to settle for a draw.

Waterkloof secured the 22-19 victory over HTS Drostdy a few minutes after the siren as flyhalf, Franco Cronjé, slotted his fourth penalty.

The clash was the opening match of this year’s NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid-tournament hosted by Affies in Pretoria.

Watch the match again on SuperSport SchoolsClick Here.

The match went on a couple minutes after the siren because both teams tried to grab the victory in the dying moments of the game. Klofies enjoyed a narrow 8-5 lead at the break.

Klofies’ captain and lock, Dale Arlow, crashed over to opening his side’s account moments after the Donkeys’ captain and hooker, Hein Louw, was sin-binned.

Drostdy’s winger Wilbre Claassen looked dangerous every time he was placed in possesion. He scored an intercept try early in the second half to place some pressure on Klofies. The team from Worcester’s flanker Matt Romao is also a player to keep an eye on in 2023.

Dr. EG Jansen of Boksburg won a closely contested encounter against Welkom Gimnasium by 19-13. The team from Boksburg held a comfortable 14-3 lead at the break thanks to two tries by Marnus Swarts (prop) and Juandré Jacobs (wing).

Fullback, David Twala, was dangerous when he joined the line and he had his kicking boots on. He will without a doubt be one of EG’s stalwarts during the season.

For Welkom Gimnasium their outside centre, Taschon Meas, as well as the lock, Tristan Appollis, could feel more than happy with their performances.

    Scorers:

Waterkloof 22 (8) – Try: Dale Arlow, Hernus Marais. Penalties: Franco Cronjé (4). HTS Drostdy 19 (5) – Tries: O’Ryann Jack, Wilbre Claassen, Bennedict George. Conversions: Cayden Malgas (2).

  • It could be the Clash of the Season – Paarl Gim vs Grey College

It could be the Clash of the Season – Paarl Gim vs Grey College

NewsGPaarlGimIt could be labeled as the Clash of the Season!

And it is on the last day of March, but it will be without a doubt a titanic clash when Paarl Gimnasium and Grey College meet today in the main match of the opening day of the annual NMI Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid-tournament in Pretoria.

All of the action of Noord/Suid will be live-streamed by SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The tournament is hosted by Affies in Pretoria.

It will be the first time that these two sides meet at this prestigious event. Paarl Gimnasium could secure their places in the folklore of schoolboy rugby with a victory in today’s clash. A victory will be their third consecutive success against Grey College in as many years.

Pieter Rossouw and Helmut Lehmann‘s team has defeated Grey in 2021 (18-16) during Monument’s Centenary Festival as well as during Wildeklawer (22-17) last year.

In the recent past – lets say from 1980 – only two other teams have managed to defeat Grey College for three years on the trot. They are Paarl Boys’ High (2015-17) under Sean Erasmus and Monument of Krugersdorp from 1991 until 1994 under Hans Coetzee.

Grey College will without a doubt fight with tooth and nail like they always do to turn the tables on Paarl Gim. Grey have smashed Welkom Gimnasium (73-21) and eased pass Marlow Landbou (52-12) and St Andrew’s College (48-0) so far this season.

One thing that stood out in the performances of Grey is that they have a pack of forwards with more than enough grit and motivation to take on any other pack of forwards. The likes of Jean Erasmus (tighthead prop), Jean-Henri Smit (flanker), Marno Stopforth (lock), JJ Theron (Nr. 8), Liam van Wyk (hooker) and Keegan Scholtz (flanker) are all tough young men.

Paarl Gimnasium will without a doubt in the wet conditions in Pretoria make use of their rolling maul. Their success in the match would however be in the hands of their centre pairing of Hennie Otto and Enzo Labuschagne.

Their flyhalf, Kyle Smith, will also have to make use of his full skillset to keep his side on the frontfoot. His clash with his opposite number Ian van der Merwe promises to be one of the highlights of the match.

In the first clash between first teams at the festival HTS Drostdy face another side from Pretoria in Waterkloof. Last year the Donkies struggled in their first match due to a grueling fixture list before the Noord/Suid-tournament.

The Donkies got a hiding of 67-0 against Garsfontein last year, but they would be better prepared for this year’s clash against Klofies. Their coach Tobie Botes represented Italy in his prime as player and the team from Worcester performed well against Boland Landbou (8-24) and Paarl Boys’ High (6-13).

Waterkloof produced a very physical performance against Oakdale Landbou during the Outeniqua Centenary Festival earlier this month to secure a 8-5 victory. Klofies’ team manager, Renier de Villiers, coached the Donkies before moving to the Jacaranda City so he will know what to expect of them.

Gimmies ran 97 points past Potchefstroom Gimnasium in their opening match of the season, and Grey has also managed to score 106 in their last two matches combined.

On Monday, the Oakdale Landbou boys from Riversdale take on the mighty Marlow Landbou from Cradock in what is sure to be a highly physical clash.

On Wednesday, Paarl Boys’ High will play against Hoërskool Nelspruit in the final match of the tournament.
