Alicia Khunou (Menlopark) and Ashley Erasmus (Hoërskool Nelspruit) were the two stars during the inaugural Curro Podium athletics meeting held at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

Both girls produced two performances each where they accumulated the maximum amount of points (1000 points). Both athletes participated in the shot put and discus events. Erasmus in the u19 age group and Khunou in the u17 age group.

Khunou walked away with the accolade for being the top senior girls performer in the field. She won the gold in the discus for girls u17 with an excellent attempt of 50.18m.

She did receive some good competition from Chris-Marie Nel (Paarl Gimnasium) who took the silver medal with an attempt op 45.33m. It meant 973 points on the ASA point system.

Logan Nienaber (HTS Middelburg) was third with an attempt of 45.02m which also gave her a more than respectable 968 points for the performance.

Khunou won the shot put with an attempt of 17.34m. It is close to the South African Schools’record of Dané Roets (Noordheuwel) of 17.58m which was set in 2019.

The SA Schools’ record could however only be broken at the annual SA Schools Championship.

This event is without a doubt also Nel’s (16.81) favourite as she just missed out on recording a full 1 000 points. Mignon la Grange (Randburg) bagged the bronze medal when she made the weight land at 15.92m with her best attempt.

Erasmus let it rip in the discus for girls u19 as her best attempt landed at 50.89m for the first time. Her closest competitor was Amari van Niekerk of Monument who bagged 965 points with her attempt of 47.19m.

In the shot put for girls u19 Erasmus’ performance of 16.54m would have crushed the SA Schools’ record of 16.32m by Meike Strydom (Outeniqua). Strydom set the record back in 2018.

Zonica Lindeque (Curro Podium Invitation) who had to be content with the silver medal also achieved a full 1 000 points thanks to an attempt of 15.65m. Monnas’ Van Niekerk (12.85m) bagged the bronze medal.

Lindeque wrote matric at Hoërskool Randburg last year and broke the SA Junior record (u19) last year. Just for interest sake she also achieved six distinctions during last year’s matric exams.

Curro Windhoek Gimnasium’s Marike Weitz performance’s in the discus and shot put for girls u15 made her the best performing field athlete in her age group. She won the discus with an attempt of 41.41m, while also placing second in the shot put with an attempt of 13.97m.

The form of Garsfontein’s Mia Janse van Rensburg is without a doubt picking up as she won the high jump for girls u17. She won the event as she cleared 1.73m

Janse van Rensburg represented South Africa’s senior team at the African Championship last year in Mauritius while still only 15 year’s old.

The best senior track athlete was Coleen Scheepers (Menlopark) who won the 400m (54.30) and came second in the 200m (24.12) for girls u17.

In the hurdle events for girls u17 Tumi Ramokgopa (Prestige College) made sure that she took two gold medals home with her. She won the 400m-hurdles in a superb time of 1 minute and 0.18 seconds (1:00.18).

In the shorter hurdles (100mH) she rushed over the finish line in 13.66 seconds.

  • Blue Lions kick off the rugby season for all in Glenco

Blue Lions kick off the rugby season for all in Glenco

It’s been too long since we had an exciting game of rugby to watch, but the wait has definitely been worth it.

Its time for schoolboy rugby to return to the field; as well as to your screen. Sarel Cilliers Rugby Day in Glenco has arrived, and it will be an absolute cracker of a festival to lead us into the 2023 season.

As if the news of the festival isn’t enough to have you on the edge of your seat, the Blue Lions of  Sarel Cilliers will take on Parktown Boys’ High for the main showdown on Saturday night.

Glenwood High School goes up against Hoerskool Vryheid in the sixth game of the day.

At the 2022 Sarel Cilliers Rugby Day, the Glenwood Lights Greens defeated the Vryheid in a whopping 55-6 victory, so it should be epic to see how the top performers of both institutions fare against one another. This could either be a comeback story or the start of a winning streak.

The Sharks Development u14 and u16 will also be making an appearance of the field, it should be interesting to see whether or not the development program has given them the edge.

There will be three fields and triple the action at this all-out rugby bonanza. Definitely a festival to attend for the true rugby lover, but don’t hesitate to stream the games if you’re a bit too far from the action. This is going to be great; you’ll want to be a part of the experience.

NewsG Affies vs KES schools rugby
    FOTO: William Brown

  • Registration opens for the 2023 DStv Schools Netball Challenge

Registration opens for the 2023 DStv Schools Netball Challenge

Following a successful 2022 season of the DStv Schools Netball Challenge (DSNC), the call to enter this year’s competition is now open.

High Schools can now register to be part of this year’s tournament starting 6 February until the 31st March 2023. The tournament is scheduled to kick off in April and conclude with the national finals taking place from 21 to 23 July 2023.

The DSNC is a partnership between Multichoice and SA Schools Netball which aims to unearth the next generation of Spar Proteas. It aims to give all High School girls across the country, whether it be in far-flung rural areas, local suburbs and townships, an equal opportunity to showcase their skills and get to contest in the national finals – a momentous national event that is broadcast live on SuperSport.

The DSNC’s mission is to ensure that all High Schools (urban and rural) have an equal opportunity to reach the national finals and contest for top honours. The competition is divided into two streams, Botho (urban schools) and Ubuntu (rural schools).

Last year’s tournament finals took place at Hoërskool Dr. E.G. Jansen, Boksburg, and saw C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje lifting the winners’ trophy in the Botho finals. While in the Ubuntu stream, Eastern Cape’s KwaZakhele High School beat the Free State’s Teto Secondary School in a tantalizing final, to solidify themselves as the 2022 winners.

The 2022 edition also served as a scouting ground for universities and national teams’ scouts including the under-21 Baby Proteas as the country prepares to host the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.

The tournament was a great success in its second season, boasting 1884 registered High Schools and almost doubling its participation rate to over 26 000 girls from all nine South African provinces. All High Schools across the country stand a chance to participate and have until the 31st of March 2023 to register.

“The 2023 Netball World Cup fever is slowly gathering momentum in the country and through the DStv Schools Netball Challenge we want the fever to spread across the entire country and reach areas which normally feel left out from the major happenings in the country.

Girls from anywhere in South Africa who dream of one day representing the country in netball must know that they have the DStv Schools Netball Challenge as a springboard to achieving their dreams,” explained MultiChoice’s Executive Head for Corporate Affairs, Tumi Masekela.

This initiative highlights MultiChoice’s commitment to not only giving students in disadvantaged schools greater opportunities, but empowering young girls who may not have seen sports as a means to success.

Our Here for Her campaign seeks to unearth more female talent as well as build female sports stars, this initiative aims at doing just that.

“Fill your heart with your hopes and dreams; dreams that will someday leap and soar into the sky. 2023 is the year for you to soar.“ enthused SA Schools Netball President Di Woolley.

    How to enter:

Visit the www.saschoolsnetball.co.za, find the League Registration tab on the top right-hand side, click on it to access the DStv Schools Netball Challenge page.

Click on register to access the Google Doc form which must be filled in to register your school.

Registration closes on the 31st of March 2023.

  • Hilton College is looking forward to the 2023-season

Hilton College is looking forward to the 2023-season

Hilton College had an almost perfect season in 2022, so it will be difficult as well as unfair to expect the class of 2023 to emulate them.

All of Hilton’s matches will be live-streamed by SuperSport Schools. Register Now.

The First XV of 2023 will however leave their own legacy behind as the team will attend the Graeme College 150th celebrations as well as per usual the St John’s College Easter Festival.

Hilton will face Die Brandwag from Uitenhage and Framesby from Gqberha during Graeme College‘s festival in Makhanda on the 23rd and 25th of March.

During the Easter Weekend they will face Noordheuwel of Krugersdorp, Jeppe High School for Boys and Graeme College at St Johns. The match against Noordheuwel might be the toughest assignment of the lot as the team from Krugersdorp reached the playoffs of the Noordvaal Trophy last year.

Last year Hilton’s only defeat was at the Easter Festival against the mighty Paarl Boys’ High (5-14).

Hilton College’s first match at their beloved Gilfillan-field would only be in May when they take on Durban High School.

The First XV is coached by Brad McLeod-Henderson and Cameron Fraser. McLeod-Henderson is an experienced coach who has coached the Sharks’ Currie Cup team earlier in his career. He has joined Hilton College back in 2012 as their Director of Rugby.

McLeod-Henderson also represented the Worcester Warriors and the Sharks during his playing career.

The squad retains three players in Bunono Jabavu (loosehead prop), Matthew Stewart (flanker) and Chris Horak (flyhalf).

Stewart is the head boy of the school and his uncle Errol Stewart played cricket for the Proteas as well as rugby for the Sharks as a utility backline player. Errol also made the SA Schools’ rugby side back in 1987 as a pupil of Westville Boys’ High.

Horak’s dad Michael Horak represented Grey College as a fullback during their unbeaten season of 1995. Horak sr. also boast an international cap as he played a test match for England against Argentina back in 2002.

Michael also represented Leicester Tigers, Saracens, Benneton Treviso, London Irish and Bristol during his proffesional career.

Jabavu is a prop that has the ability to make his mark on attack. He loves to run with the ball in hand and will without a doubt keep a few defences guessing during the season.

Hilton’s big matches are the two against their arch-rivals Michaelhouse which will take place on 29 April and 17 July this year.

Goudveld of Welkom ready for the 2023 season

The air is starting to catch a chill; the heavy rains are passing us by.

We are nearing the winter sport season and the air smells of veld fire and potential.

This is an exciting time for all of us, but especially for the rising stars and the committed coaches forming and shaping this young talent.

Recently we had the privilege of speaking to one of these coaches, Frans Crous, of Goudveld-Hoërskool, to get the rundown on the upcoming season and the outlook for the 2023 squad.

Goudveld’s 2022 team was a strong one, and 17 of those players will be carrying their skills over into the new year.

The 2023 squad will include Pieter Reyneke (prop), Jaunricht Cloete and Lodie van Dyk (both locks), Schalk du Plessis (flank), Ryan de Jager (scrumhalf), Quinton Davids (flyhalf), Zander van den Berg and Enzo Beukes (both wingers), Urban Pienaar (centre), Tyrece Britz (fullback) and last but definitely not least, Jonathan Olivier (Nr. 8) who all made appearances during last season.

Olivier is definitely a player to watch. This prospect represented the Griffons at the 2022 Academy Week (u18) which was hosted in Wellington.

At half time during the national tournament it was 20-0 to the Blue Bulls, but Jonathan led an incredible comeback. Scoring a hat-trick in the second half helping the Griffons to a 21-20 victory over the Blue Bulls.

His brother, Rian Olivier, played for the Griffons Craven Week-side in 2019-2020, ultimately leading to him joining the French Rugby union team Castres Olympique from 2020-2022.

Rugby is definitely in their blood, and Jonathan is on the lookout for opportunities to take his skills beyond the school level.

Some hopefuls which played in last year’s Grant Khomo Week are also looking to earn their spot in the first team. These are Jan Coetzee, Ryan Lemmer, Joshua Coertzen and Ru-Bran Kock. As first team reserves, we have Kabous du Plooy, Wian de Beer, Nichlas Marais, Marco-Jan Pretorius, Caleb Lottering and Junior Motsamai.

Leading the talent is of course head coach Frans Crous, assistant coaches Steps Pretorius and Fanie Pretorius focusing on the backline.

Jacques van Staden is the team manager with Madison Murdoch handling the squads strength and conditioning training.

Goudveld will as per usual open their season during the annual Fichardtpark Sports Day in Bloemfontein. They will face Jim Fouché, Sentraal, Witteberg, Hoërskool Trio, Fichardtpark, Diamantveld and Voortrekker in their group matches during the Wesgrow-league. The matches against Witteberg, the Trekkers and Trio will also double-up as Griffon-league encounters.

The team will attend the USN Rugby Festival at Camp Discovery during the March holidays.

Their hopes for the year are to fully live out their mission, vision, values and principles on, and off the field. To deliver the best possible game as a unit; to look back at the season with no regrets. When they can achieve this, the results will take care of themselves.

This is definitely set to be an exciting season, and the Gouties are certainly a team to look out for.
