Junior Springboks’ draw announced for u20 Championship

JuniorSpringboksThe Junior Springboks will face England, Fiji, and hosts, Italy, in Pool C of the 2020 World Rugby U20 Championship, which will be hosted across four Italian cities – Verona, Viadana, Calvisano, and Parma – from Sunday, 28 June, to Saturday, 18 July.

Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux’s charges will have the honour of kicking off the international showpiece against Italy at Verona’s brand new Payanini Center on Sunday, 28 June, and they will remain in the city for their second pool match against Fiji on Friday, 3 July, before wrapping up the league stages against England at Stadio Sergio Zaffanella in Viadana.

The semi-finals – which will feature the three pool winners and the next best-placed team among the 12 participants – will be hosted at the Peroni Stadium in Calvisano on Monday, 13 July, while the Final will play out in Parma on Saturday, 18 July.

While Verona will host matches for the first time, Viadana, Parma, and Calvisano hosted World Rugby U20 Championship action in 2015. This year’s event will be the third time the competition is hosted in Italy, as they also hosted the spectacle featuring the best U20 players on the planet in 2011.

Defending champions, France, will line up against Argentina, Ireland and Japan in Pool A, while 2019 runners up, Australia, will meet Wales, New Zealand and Georgia in Pool B.

The Junior Springboks won the bronze medal in the last three World Rugby U20 Championship tournaments – the last of which was hosted in Argentina.

Roux spoke highly of their opposition and said: “We are preparing for another challenging World Rugby U20 Championship, and it will be that way from the outset, as the home crowd will be fully behind their team in the opening game.

“Italy and England are both U20 Six Nations regulars, while the Fijians are a physical bunch that always play with passion and grit.

“Given the small margins in this competition it will be important to win every game to advance to the semi-final, so we know what we are in for and we will prepare accordingly,” Roux added.

Commenting on the tournament and Italy as the hosts, World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “Every year the World Rugby U20 Championship showcases the most promising young rugby players and we see year after year graduates from the competition succeeding at the highest level.

“Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan featured 228 players who initially represented their country in this tournament, and I invite all rugby fans to follow matches closely for the next rugby stars of tomorrow.

“Italy has proved incredible hosts in the past and we are confident rugby strongholds like Viadana, Calvisano, Verona, and Parma will deliver the best possible stage for the tournament.”

  • Smith and Momberg shine on the opening day of Grey Cricket Festival

Smith and Momberg shine on the opening day of Grey Cricket Festival

NewsGRikusAllenPlay was only possible in three of the six matches during the opening day of the annual Grey Cricket Festival in Bloemfontein. The City of Roses received some much-needed rain on Wednesday which caused most of the matches to be canceled.

Grey High Schools’ opening batsman Jade Smith (91*) continued his brilliant form with the bat as he helped the side from Port Elizabeth to an eight-wicket victory over St Andrews of Bloemfontein.

Smith was one of the top batsmen during the recent Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. He scored 250 runs at an average of 50 runs per innings during this prestigious week hosted by Cricket South Africa.

Saints reached 138/8 in their reduced allotted 35 overs thanks to contributions by Nicolaas Liebenberg (35) and Gerrit Badenhorst (20). Nicholas Keevy (3/19), who also represented the Warriors at the Cubs Week, was the pick of his side’s bowlers with his spin bowling.

King Edward VII managed to down Glenwood High School by 35 runs thanks to some aggressive batting by Zack Momberg (66). He faced only 44 deliveries in which he launched eight sixes.

In the only match that was played Northwood defeated Durban High School by two wickets. Dylan Ferreira (27*) got his side past the target with only three deliveries to spare.

    Summarised Scorecards (50 overs):

St Andrews 138/8 in 35 overs (Nicolaas Liebenberg 35, Gerrit Badenhorst 20; Nicholas Keevy 3/19, George van Heerden 2/10, Joshua Stephenson 2/38); Grey High School 139/2 in 25.5 overs (Jade Smith 91*, James Hofmeyr 23; Liam Doherty 1/12). Grey High School won by eight wickets.

King Edward VII 161/9 in 25 overs (Zack Momberg 66, Gareth Lonie 22; Daniel Thring 3/19, Russell Hein 2/27); Glenwood 126 in 25 overs (Matt Halstead 32, Chad Laycock 31; James Hickman 3/19, Kurt Sabela 2/12, Keegan Janse van Rensburg 2/14, Geetarth Changmai 2/28). King Edward VII won by 35 runs.

Durban High School 118/5 in 20 overs (Yudishthir Ramanand 39, Humphrey van der Merwe 32, Joshua Stride 22*; Devon Rogers 2/14); Northwood 122/8 in 19.3 overs (Dylan Ferreira 27*, Kyle Northend 25, Jawaad Aziz 22; Shailin Naicker 2/18, Corné Nel 2/36). Northwood won by two wickets.

  • Lions champions of CSA Cubs Week

Lions champions of CSA Cubs Week

NewsGHanuViljoenThe Imperial Lions were crowned champions of the 13th annual Cricket South Africa Cubs Week in Stellenbosch after comfortably defeating the VKB Knights by seven wickets in the final.

The Knights batted first in the final on the Coetzenburg Oval and reached what seemed to be a competitive 267/6 in their allotted 50 overs thanks to a century by Ruan Cronjé (111). Juan-Dee Olivier (56*) and JP Coetzee (44) also contributed with the willow.

The Lions’ Michael Copeland (98) deserved a century but fell to the bowling of Reeza Alexander two runs short of the milestone. Copeland struck six fours and six sixes as he took the game away from the Knights with some aggressive batting.

Copeland shared a 158-run partnership with Nick Halstead-Cleak (73*) over the third wicket. Halstead-Cleak was the glue that kept the batting line-up together while also keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

Opening batsman Taheer Isaacs (52) also contributed towards the victory with his half-century. Cronjé of the Knights also finished the week as the leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets at an average of 10.5 runs per victim.

Cape Cobras’ Lehan Botha (5/26) showed with an impressive all-round performance against the Titans that he is a double threat. Botha bagged a five-wicket haul as the Titans were restricted to 236 at Tassies Oval.

Botha then also got the Cobras past the target as he scored an unbeaten 58 runs. Kai Curren (67) and Jhedli van Briesies (54*) also recorded half-centuries.

The Warriors finished the week on a high thanks to a four-wicket victory over the Dolphins.

The boys from Nigeria will feel heartbroken as they came a solitary two runs short of securing their first victory at this year’s Cubs Week against Namibia. A victory would’ve given the team’s spirit the necessary lift before the ICC u19 World Cup.

Namibia won the match by a solitary run with Jan van Dyk (3/26) and Addo Iita (2/13) causing most of the damage with the ball in hand. The victory will also be sweet revenge for Namibia as Nigeria defeated them to book their place at the World Cup later this month in South Africa.

Nigeria’s Miracle Akhige (3/27) and Taiwo Mohamed (3/33) can also feel happy with their bowling performances in the defeat.

The Titans’ opening batsman Jordan Hermann concluded the tournament as the highest run-scorer. His 402 runs are the most runs ever scored during a Cubs Week. His runs also came at an impressive average of 100.5 runs per innings.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Knights 267/6 (Ruan Cronjé 111, Juan-Dee Olivier 56*, JP Coetzee 44, Corné Viljoen 28; Zakhele Sibanda 2/43); Lions 269/3 (Michael Copeland 98, Nick Halstead-Cleak 73*, Taheer Isaacs 52; Michael Jantjies 1/9). Lions won by seven wickets.

Titans 236 (Hanu Viljoen 63, Valentime Kitime 50, Simeon de Bruyn 35, Saahil Khan 29, Jordan Hermann 23; Lehan Botha 5/26); Cape Cobras 237/3 (Kai Curren 67, Lehan Botha 58*, Jhedli van Briesies 54*, Daniel Smith 43). Cape Cobras won by seven wickets.

Dolphins 180 (Jacques van der Walt 50, Seth Rajakumar 39, Andile Simelane 24; Joshua Stephenson 2/22, Nicholas Keevy 2/28); Warriors 181/6 (Nonelela Yikha 36*, James Mullins 35, Extras 35, Jaden Smith 29; Michael Frost 2/24). Warriors won by four wickets.

Namibia 219 (Scott Winburn 67, Gerhard Janse van Rensburg 38, Renier Bosman 34, Extras 29; Miracle Akhige 3/27, Taiwo Mohamed 3/33); Nigeria 218 (O Elijah 43, T Mohamed 40, Extras 31, J Rahman 30, S Runsewe 22; Jan van Dyk 3/26, Addo Iita 2/13). Namibia won by one run.

Knights and Lions to face each other in Cubs final

NewsGRuanCronjeThe only two unbeaten sides left in Cricket South Africa’s annual Cubs Week (u19), the Knights and Lions, will face each other the final of the tournament on Wednesday at the Coetzenburg Oval here.

The Lions recorded a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Namibia in their final pool match. Namibia’s Matthew de Gouveia (70) continued his impressive form with the bat as his side was bowled out for only 120 runs.

De Gouveia scored 227 runs at an average of 75.7 runs per innings. Liam McCarthy (4/43), Michael Copeland (3/18) and Zakhele Sibanda (3/18) had too many questions that the other Namibian batsmen couldn’t answer.

McCarthy who only played three of his side’s matches is with ten wickets in second place on the list of top wicket-takers. His wickets came at an average of 10.4 runs per victim.

Christopher de Freitas (49*) also continued his excellent form to get the Lions past the target in the 21st over. De Freitas has scored 264 runs thus far at an average of 132 runs per innings.

Ruan Cronjé played a valuable role in getting the Knights to the final. He was also their star player today against Nigeria as he grabbed a five-wicket haul (5/20) in their 101-run victory.

Cronjé (49) with Corné Viljoen (49) also made the biggest contribution with the bat towards the Knights reaching 225 runs. Cronjé is with 15 wickets at an average of 8 runs per victim the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

The Warriors recorded a 16-run victory over the Titans thanks to a century by George van Heerden (129) as well as a half-century from James Mullins (60).

The Titans’ opening batsman Jordan Hermann etched his name into the Cubs Week’s history books with his 77 runs. This took his tally to 379 runs well passed the most runs ever scored at the week since the inaugural tournament back in 2008.

Spin bowler Nonelela Yikha (4/47) opened the bowling for the Warriors and caused most of the damage with the ball in hand.

Half-centuries by the Cape Cobras’ Nathan Engelbrecht (60) and Jhedli van Briesies (56) was not enough to keep their side from losing by four wickets against the Dolphins. Slade van Staden (69*) got the Dolphins to the target with his unbeaten half-century.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Warriors 283 (George van Heerden 129, James Mullins 60, Jaden Smith 28; Zeeshan Ismail 4/55, Thomas Mayes 3/60); Titans 267 (Jordan Hermann 77, Simeon de Bruyn 55, Saahil Khan 36; Nonelela Yikha 4/47). Warriors won by 16 runs.

Golden Lions have it tough on first day’s draw at Grant Khomo Week

GrantKhomoWeekThe hosts of the 18th edition of the Grant Khomo Week (for u16 players), the Golden Lions, could not have asked for a tougher opening game to the week. The Lions will face the most successful side since the inaugural week back in 2003, Western Province, in the main match of the opening day at Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg.

This year’s week will take place from 22 to 26 June in the City of Gold. As per the last couple of years, it will be hosted in conjunction with the u13 Craven Week. The first Grant Khomo Week was also hosted in Johannesburg at the University of Johannesburg’s fields back in 2003.

Western Province has been crowned unofficial champions of the Grant Khomo Week for seven times since 2003. The team from the Western Cape also took the honours during last year’s tournament in White River by overpowering the Sharks by 34-10 in the main match.

The Sharks will face Eastern Province in their first match at the 2020-edition of the tournament, while the Free State could expect a bruising encounter against Border in their opening match.

The Blue Bulls will be facing South Western Districts in their opening encounter.

The hosts of the tournament, the Pumas, had a second team in attendance in 2019, but this practice makes way in 2020 for Western Province sending their second stringers. This is on par with the system in place at the u18 Craven Week where the Western Province XV proves to be more than competitive against the other unions.

    The Fixtures:

    Western Province vs Golden Lions
    Sharks vs Eastern Province
Blue Bulls vs South Western Districts
    Free State vs Border
    Leopards vs Western Province XV
    Pumas vs Valke
    Griffons vs Limpopo Blue Bulls
    Boland vs Griqualand West
    Iqhawe XV vs Zimbabwe
    Namibia vs Border Country Districts

  • Mahatlane expects ‘good challenge’ from familiar foes, Zimbabwe

Mahatlane expects ‘good challenge’ from familiar foes, Zimbabwe

Head coach Lawrence Mahatlane believes his team will be up for a contest when the South Africa under-19s take on the Zimbabwe under-19s in their third match of the Youth One-Day (ODI) Quadrangular series in Durban on Tuesday.

After going down by 66 runs to India in the first game, which was followed by an impressive five-wicket win over New Zealand, the junior Proteas will be looking to make it back-to-back victories against Zimbabwe and earn a place in the series final taking place on Thursday.

Mahatlane highlighted the performances of Zimbabwe in the four-team series so far, in their defeats to New Zealand and India, stating that his side will have to be on their game against a side featuring players that attend school in South Africa.

“A lot of the Zim players play in South Africa in schoolboy cricket,” the coach mentioned ahead of the encounter. “One of their best players, Wesley (Madhevere), is at St Charles College and we’ve seen him dominate in Schools T20 Cricket.

“It’s a good side at age-group level and it will be a good challenge. They were unlucky to lose to New Zealand and managed to score 200 against an Indian bowling attack. We know how good they can be and it is important that we stick to our processes and if we get them right, we should be okay.

“Hopefully we can keep building on what we’ve done so far,” Mahatlane added.

The matches are being used as key preparation for the ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup to be hosted in South Africa from 17 January – 09 February.

Mahatlane analysed the positives from the team’s recent matches and the aspects that still require some work with bat and ball ahead of the first match of the global showpiece against Afghanistan at the Diamond Oval.

“If you look at the India game, we had opportunities,” he began. “We had them two down quite quickly and unfortunately, we couldn’t break the partnership after that. In the games where we’ve been successful, we managed to strike straight after powerplay one and in the games we haven’t been successful, we allowed them to drag out the first powerplay and build a partnership.

“That has been our challenge, we understand that and we’ve come up with a couple of solutions for it,” Mahatlane continued.

“From a batting point of view, we’ve had good starts by dragging those partnerships at the top, which has allowed us to go through comfortably. When we haven’t done well, is when we lost wickets in clusters and that is something that we’re looking to work on, getting your mate in and making sure that you get him to at least ten runs and build new partnerships.

“We still have four games before the opening game of the World Cup and hopefully something will work out,” the coach said.

Although there have been notable performances from Andrew Louw, who recorded his second Youth ODI half-century against New Zealand along with bowlers, Mondli Khumalo and Odirile Modimokoane, who have both claimed four-wicket hauls in the opening two games, nobody can argue with the impact from SA U19s captain, Bryce Parsons.

The all-rounder has scored consecutive fifties against his Indian and New Zealand counterparts and delivered a sublime performance with the ball against the latter, bowling five maidens in his eight overs, going for six runs and taking one wicket. This is after recovering from an impingement injury in his back, which kept him out of action for six weeks.

“He has worked very hard to get himself fit again and ready to play, and he has been outstanding,” Mahatlane beamed about his skipper. “I thought he’s bowled superbly, and that confidence has flowed to his batting and his leadership.

“He’s always been a natural reader of the game and has very good instincts in terms of how the game works.

“I have been very proud of his performance and I know the boys have also been looking forward to playing alongside him,” he concluded.

The matches will also be available for live streaming on www.pitchvision.com.
