Roux rings the changes for second SA U19 clash against Georgia

NewsGCheanRouxJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux – who is guiding the SA U19 team on their tour to Georgia – made wholesale changes to his team for their second and final match against the hosts at the Shevardeni Rugby Stadium on Thursday, with only three players retaining their starting spots.

The trio is Werner Gouws (looseforward), Stravino Jacobs (winger) and Muzi Manyike (fullback). Once again all 29 players in the touring group were named in the match-day squad, and all the players will be allowed to take the field.

The SA U19s kicked off their two-match tour with a 28-21 victory against Georgia on Monday, and another rewarding result would not only see them return home successful, it would also reaffirm the coaching staff’s faith in the players with an eye on the future.

“We made several changes to ensure that every player gets a chance to play,” said Roux.

“Some of the players will start a match in the green and gold for the first time, so it will be a big occasion for them. We also have expanded bench, so we will make changes through the course of match.”

Roux expected Georgia to stick to the strengths that saw them produce a competitive showing in their opening encounter.

“They will front up physically and produce strong scrums and lineouts once again,” he said.

“What I would like from our team though, is to play more attacking rugby. That said, we have had very little time to prepare, so the players will have to play the situations on the field.

“Once again it is important to note this is an opportunity to assess the players and see where we are in terms of the Under-19 group, who will be U20 next year. We intend sitting down with the players after this tour to discuss their strengths and weaknesses, and the areas they need to work on during the off-season, as we will only see one another again in March.”

The match kicks off at 09h00 (SA time) and will be streamed live on https://www.facebook.com/RugbyTVGeorgia/ and https://www.facebook.com/GeorgianRugby/.

SA U19 team to face Georgia:

  • Nhleko reflects on SA U19s opening win against Georgia

Nhleko reflects on SA U19s opening win against Georgia

NewsBafanaNhlekoJunior Springbok assistant coach, Bafana Nhleko – who is serving in the same capacity on the SA Under-19 team’s tour to Georgia – looked back at the positives from their 28-21 victory against the hosts on Monday, and singled out a few areas to work on ahead of their second and final tour match on Thursday.

The team overturned a halftime deficit of 18-14 to win their first match at the Shevardeni Rugby Stadium in the country’s capital, Tbilisi.

After reviewing the match on Tuesday morning, Nhleko said: “With such short preparation time and the testing playing conditions, the players did well to try to stick to the game plan. They adapted particularly well to the defensive breakdown interpretation, especially after conceding a few penalties in the first half.

“I also felt that we created opportunities on attack, but it is about being alert so that we can capitalise on them. We were also pleased with the defensive character the boys showed, and the fact that they limited the hosts to only three points in the second half,” he added.

Casting an eye on their next match-up on Thursday, Nhleko said: “Our leg drive in the tackle is a work on, as we lost some collisions, and we would also like to improve our ability to set early so that we can move the ball when the options are on.

“Our discipline is another area we need to clean up.”

Nhleko was satisfied that the coaches were achieving their objectives on tour and he said they would look to give a few other players a chance to make their mark in their second encounter.

“The guys are learning and growing,” he said.

“We are getting to know them and we can see what they are capable of in a game situation.

“Since the purpose of this tour is to assess the players, we will give the other guys a run on Thursday.

“They would have watched the first game, and they were part of the review, so hopefully they can apply those lessons.”

The coach said the players were also soaking up the experience off the field.

“I think they are enjoying the culture, and bonding off the field as well,” said Nhleko.

“The weather has been a challenge, but these players are lucky to have an opportunity to travel and see the world.

“I don’t think many of them would have chosen to travel to Georgia, so this is a great life experience, as they get to see a different country and way of life. We have really been well hosted by the Georgia Rugby Union and their community, so this is a great experience for us all.”

Junior Springbok coach, Chean Roux, will name his match-day squad for their next encounter on Wednesday.

  • Roux satisfied as SA U19s grind out a win against Georgia

NewsGJuanMostertJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux expressed his satisfaction as the SA U19s ground out a morale-boosting 28-21 victory in a hard-fought and physical encounter against Georgia at the Shevardeni Rugby Stadium in Tbilisi on Monday, in what marked the first of two matches between the teams in the country’s capital.

Making the victory even more rewarding was the fact that the South Africans received three yellow cards in the match, which saw them play with 14 men for 30 of the 80 minutes.

The first half was hard-fought as both teams threw everything at one another on attack and stood firm on defence, but Georgia’s two penalty goals and two tries – one of which was converted – to only two converted tries by the SA U19s, allowed the home side to sneak into an 18-14 lead shortly before halftime.

Roux’s charges hit back after the break to add two converted tries, taking their tally in the match to four, while they limited the hosts to one penalty goal.

“It was a tough game, especially in the windy and cold conditions, which the players are not used to,” said Roux. “But our defence held well, and we managed to keep them out over several phases.

“That said, the score wasn’t the most important aspect of the match for us, it was more the opportunity to assess the players and to get to know them better under tough circumstances. And it certainly says a lot about their character.”

With a second match-up lined up against Georgia on Thursday, Roux said: “The areas we need to work on going forward are our discipline – we cannot afford to get three yellow cards – and our penalty count, as we conceded almost 15 penalties in the match.

“But this is a learning process. Most players met one another for the first time last week Monday, and it is pleasing to see how things are coming together.”

Roux added: “With regards to injuries, it doesn’t look like we have any serious concerns, but we will look to make a few changes for the next match.”

The SA U19s showed their intent from the outset as they worked their way close to the tryline twice early on, and their efforts finally paid off less than 10 minutes into the match with Werner Gouws (flanker) touching down after good phases and patience on attack. Scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse added the conversion to push them 7-0 ahead.

The team was dealt a double blow as Hendrikse received a yellow card for cynical play at a ruck, and Dewald Donald (prop) was sent to the sin bin next in the 18th and 29th minute respectively. The hosts capitalised on this with two penalty goals by Lasha Lomidze to reduce their deficit to 7-6.

The SA U19s hit back with Zwelendaba Mnombo (centre) scoring their second try in the 32nd minute despite being reduced to 14 men, and yet again Hendrikse’s conversion was successful.

The team, however, let their lead slip as Georgia fought back strongly in the dying minutes, which saw Saba Kuratashvili (hooker) and Giorgi Margaltadze (scrumhalf) score back-to-back tries from some enterprising attacking play, which nudged them into an 18-14 halftime lead.

The visitors started the second half on a disappointing note with Stravino Jacobs (winger) receiving a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, and Lomidze converted this opportunity into points by slotting over his third penalty goal for a 21-14 lead.

The SA U19s struck back in the 56th minute with a try by captain and hooker, JJ Kotze, compliments of a strong rolling maul, and the conversion by Juan Mostert (flyhalf), allowed them to level the scores.

Bernard van der Linde added the team’s fourth try in the 57th minute thanks to a sniping run and the conversion pushed them 28-21 ahead with a little over 10 minutes to play.

Georgia tried hard to force their way back into the game in the remaining minutes, but the visitors’ solid defence shut them out and allowed them to seal the seven-point victory.

    Scorers:

SA u19 28 (14) – Tries: Werner Gouws, Zwelendaba Mnombo, JJ Kotze, Bernard van der Linde. Conversions: Jaden Hendrikse (2), Juan Mostert (2). Georgia u19 21 (18) – Tries: Saba Kuratashvili, Giorgi Margaltadze. Conversion: Lasha Lomidze. Penalty Goals: Lasha Lomidze (3).

  • SA Schools Rugby Challenge could shake schools’ rugby in SA

Bart3South African schools’ rugby is approaching a crossroads in the near future.

Will the game at schoolboy level be run within a professional structure with a national champion being crowned or will the game at this level stay in a more developmental role as it has done up to this point?

Carl Fabian, owner of Ruggas.co.za, rival school rugby website of School of Rugby announced through a press release on Sunday that they have been working behind the scenes to establish a formal “SA Schools Rugby Challenge“.

Six of South Africa’s top rugby schools Grey College of Bloemfontein, Paarl Boys’ High, Monument of Krugersdorp, Paarl Gimnasium, Garsfontein of Pretoria and Paul Roos Gimnasium agreed to further negotiations that will ultimately lead to the establishment of what is dubbed the most competitive schoolboy rugby challenge in the world.

The competition is planned to run on a similar tiered system as the Virsekerbeker with eight schools that will form Tier 1. The competition is planned to be launched in 2021.

The initial invites took into account the schools’ current fixture lists and workload. Great care was also taken to guarantee that historical fixtures will not be affected during the initial period. It is, however, the organisers intend to involve all qualifying schools before the end of 2022,” states the press release.

All eight schools will face each other annually with the teams from u14C to First XV taking each other on.

The former High-Performance Manager of the Golden Lions, Bart Schoeman, will act as chairman during the negotiations with the schools and guide the process for the initial three years.

The terms of the series will be negotiated with the following guidelines that were established during the past months:

    1. The “challenge” will only take place from 2021 onwards.

    2. The establishment of a second-tier of competing schools from 2022 onwards.

    3. Promotion/Relegation between the two tiers from 2023 onwards.

    4. The minimum teams a school must field is three teams per age group and four in the u/19 age group.

    5. “Developing” schools will be “adopted” to help ensure that all the teams of the participating schools will have fixtures at any stage. Parel Vallei Hoërskool has been confirmed as the first development school.

    6. Eligibility of players – No player will be allowed to participate in this series at the u/19 age group who are not enrolled at his new school within the first two weeks after the commencement of his first grade 11 school year. A committee will be appointed who will evaluate each transfer that does not comply.

    7. Coaches of the competing schools will make them available for free coaching clinics specifically aimed at developing coaches to assist in the development of rugby at all rugby playing schools.

    8. The traditional fixtures and values of participating schools are to be respected.

  • Three World Rugby U20 Champs players to start against Georgia U19s

NewsGDawidKellermanJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux named all three capped World Rugby U20 Championship players in his starting team to face Georgia on Monday at the Shevardeni Rugby Stadium in the first of two matches between the hosts and the South Africa Under-19 team on their tour to Tbilisi.

Hooker JJ Kotze will captain the team featuring World Rugby U20 Championship Breakthrough player of the Year nominee Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf) and his SA U20 team-mates Zwelendaba Mnombo (centre), and Thabiso Mdletshe (prop).

Another World Rugby U20 Championship player, Sibusiso Sangweni (flanker) was included in the original squad, but he was forced to withdraw due to a hand injury.

A total of 29 players were named in the match-day squad, and all the players will be allowed to take the field.

Roux was pleased with their preparations and said: “The facilities here (in Georgia) are very good and the team has been training well. It is a new squad, although most of the players have come through our Elite Player Development (EPD) system, so they know one another.

“We have focused mainly on the basic aspects of the game since we got together and the players have been doing well considering that we have only had four training sessions.”

The coach expected a tough onslaught from Georgia, saying: “They pride themselves on their physicality and they are good at scrummaging and in the rucks and mauls, so we have to be ready for that.

“The important thing for us is to speed up the game, to work on our defence and to be as effective as possible in the key areas of the game.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for these young players to be exposed to international rugby at a young age, so it is also important that they enjoy this experience and learn as much as possible on the field.”

The match kicks off at 14h00 SA Time.

The teams will meet in their second and final tour match on Thursday, 5 December.

SA Under-19 team to face Georgia U19s:

SA U19s depart for Georgia with clear goals

NewsGCheanRouxJunior Springbok assistant coach Bafana Nhleko – who will fulfill that role with the SA Under-19 team departing for Georgia later on Wednesday – said they had set clear goals on what they wanted to achieve from the tour and that they were excited to see the players in action.

The SA U19 team – under the guidance of Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux – will play two matches against the Georgia U19 team, on Monday 2 and Thursday 5 December, in the country’s capital, Tbilisi.

The squad wrapped up their preparations at their training base in Stellenbosch on Wednesday and Nhleko said they were ready to begin their journey.

“We are excited about the talent and how quickly the boys have learned,” said Nhleko.

“We haven’t put a lot of things in place, instead we have just given the players a basic structure of what we expect, and the whole idea is to see how they can express themselves within that.

“This will serve as a good opportunity for us to assess their strengths and weaknesses and hopefully we can use that as a building base for next year. The big thing for us is to get to know the guys and see how they think and see the game.

“What we really want to get from this tour is to return to SA with a good idea of what each player has to offer so that we can use their strengths to allow us to grow as a team, and to improve their weaknesses.”

With the tour replacing the regular Under-18 and Under-19 assessment camps hosted by the Junior Springbok coaching staff with an eye on selecting their training squad for the World Rugby U20 Championship, Nhleko said the tour would serve the same purpose – although he admitted that facing international opposition in foreign conditions would test the players thoroughly.

“Every time the players step onto the field they want to do well, and one of the key aspects on tour is to assess them,” he said.

“That said, it is going to be tough and physical. The Georgians are also in season which presents a different challenge because it means they will be game ready. The weather will also test the boys, and that will show us a thing or two about their character of the group.”

  • Hendrikse relishing Georgia opportunity with SA U19s

NewsGJadenHendrikseJunior Springbok and Cell C Sharks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse are relishing the opportunity to represent his country for the second time this year after being included in the South Africa Under-19 team to tour Georgia, and he said they are keen to express themselves on the field.

The calm-and-collected No 9 was one of the key players in the Junior Springboks’ World Rugby U20 Championship campaign in Argentina in June, with his consistently superb contributions on the field earning him a nomination for the Breakthrough Player of the Tournament award. The SA U20s claimed the bronze medal in the international showpiece.

The SA U19 team – which is being guided by Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux – will depart for Tbilisi, Georgia, on Wednesday. They will play two matches against the hosts, on Monday 2 and Thursday 5 December.

“I am very excited to be part of the SA Under-19 team,” said Hendrikse.

“This is an exciting new bunch of players and there is a fantastic vibe in the camp, so we are really looking forward to going to Georgia and expressing ourselves on the field.

“I know most of the players in the squad from the domestic Under-19 and Under-20 structures, so it will be nice to get the opportunity to play in the same team and also to get to know everyone well off the field.”

While the opportunity to face the physical and passionate Georgians on the field is an exciting prospect for the squad, Hendrikse said they also planned to enjoy the experience of discovering Tbilisi off the field.

“It is always great to go to a different country because you get to experience different cultures, meet new people and see new places, so this is very exciting for us all,” he said.
“This tour is certainly going to allow to us learn, both on and off the field.”

Hendrikse had the luxury of facing Georgia twice this year – once in the U20 International Series in the Western Cape and again in the World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina, and while he admitted that they expected a tough onslaught from the hosts, he said their attention since getting together on Sunday has been on their own structures and systems.

“The focus in the camp is mainly on us and our systems,” said Hendrikse.

“Having played against Georgia before, I know they are going to be physical and that they tend to place a lot of emphasis on their set-pieces, so we are expecting two good match-ups.”

They have been replaced by DHL Western Province lock Dylan de Leeuw, Xerox Golden Lions flanker Lindo Ncusane, and Vodacom Blue Bulls No 8 Willem Steenkamp respectively.

The tour, which will feature matches against the Georgia Under-19 team on Monday, 2 December, and Thursday, 5 December, will replace the annual Under-18 and Under-19 assessment camps usually hosted by the Junior Springbok coaching staff with an eye on selecting the SA U20 training squad for the World Rugby U20 Championship.

The withdrawal of Van Heerden and Gumede from the squad means that the number of capped Junior Springbok World Rugby U20 Championship players in the 30-member squad is reduced to four. They are Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), Zwelendaba Mnombo (centre), Sibusiso Sangweni (flanker) and Thabiso Mdletshe (prop).

“The Junior Springbok team is the stepping stone to senior provincial rugby and the Springbok team, so we are pleased to see Celimpilo, Evan and Emile being drafted into the Cell C Sharks’ training squad,” said Roux.

“Their withdrawal of from the squad will give Dylan, Lindo and Willem a chance to show what they have to offer at this level, which is in line with the purpose of this tour.

“Dylan played for the SA schools team, but this will be a step up for him, and this experience will be new territory for Lindo and Willem, as well a large number of other players in the squad, which is very exciting for the players and for us as coaches.”

The squad will gather at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport on Sunday, 24 November, to begin their preparations for the tour, while they will depart for Tbilisi on Wednesday, 27 November.
