Boishaai looking to turn the tables against Rondebosch in Cape Town this year

Rondebosch Boys’ High look to follow up their last-minute 20-16 victory over their rivals Wynberg Boys’ High last weekend when they face a wounded Paarl Boys’ High team this weekend.

Watch the game live on SuperSport Schools – Register now

Boishaai also managed to beat Wynberg (33-29) they met two weeks ago, saving the win with a try in the final play, but the Paarl team had to bend the knee to Paul Roos Gimnasium last weekend (35-17), losing to their rivals from Stellenbosch at home for the first time in 20 years.

The visitors are definitely the stronger side on paper, having put in some really impressive performances already this season.

They’ve been the standout team at a number of festivals this year, winning both games at the North/South in Pretoria against Jeppe (43-21) and the hosts, Affies (36-19), coming out on top in all three games at the KES Easter Festival against Selborne (48-5), Northwood (29-7) and the hosts, King Edward VII (10-8) and beating Glenwood (35-13) and Helpmekaar (15-10) at the Absa Wildeklawer festival in Kimberley.

This intense schedule has seen the juggernaut from Paarl trip up a couple of times though, as Hoërskool Durbanville beat them 26-25 at the beginning of the season, Oakdale Landbou got the better of them with 20-17 on the farm, and then they lost out, despite a valiant effort, against Grey College, 39-30.

This last defeat against Paul Roos will have been tough to swallow, and Rondebosch needs to be wary of Boishaai using this game to make a statement.

Rondebosch have already proven that they can hold their own this season though, and it was only last year when they upset Boishaai in Paarl, winning 21-19.

The home team are unfortunately without the services of their captain, Polite Phiri (flanker), Alutha Wesi moves from centre to cover his position at the side of the scrum. Matthew Malherbe comes in at centre.

The visitors have also been forced to make a couple of changes, while their dangerous backline remains intact from the previous weekend, Divan Fuller moves to the back of the scrum in the place of Douw Wessels, covering the no. 8 position, while Chris Nel starts at flanker.

Their big prop Alfie Holm also moves to loosehead and Evan Kotze (prop) and Dewald Scheepers (hooker) replace Michael Pretorius and HB Odendaal to complete the front row.

Stellenberg have had a tough season so far, but they’ve shown glimpses of their potential in games like the victories over Maritzburg (36-24) and Helpmekaar (22-20) and will hope to find some form when they take on Parel Vallei.

Their captain and stalwart flanker, Damon Pereira, has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.

Alex Schoeman takes his place on the side of the scrum this weekend and Corné Bruwer (lock) takes over the captain’s responsibilities.

Parel Vallei are also in desperate need of another win though, having had a tough season themselves, despite an impressive performance against Frikkie Meyer at the Rolyn Bergsig tournament in Rustenburg, where they managed to secure a 15-all draw against the team from Thabazimbi.

  • St Andrews eager to stop a roaring Selborne bus in Makhanda

St Andrews eager to stop a roaring Selborne bus in Makhanda

St Andrew’s College will be looking to put a halt to Selborne College’s season when the two giants face off in a provincial derby in Makhanda this coming Friday afternoon.

Selborne will be searching for their fifth straight win this season (in derby matches) after beating the likes of Queens (3-1), Dale (6-0), and Merrifield (7-1) in May.

The black and white troops have been phenomenal this season, to say the least. Their attack style of play, counterattacking on turnovers has seen them defy all odds, which has shown in the number of players from the team selected to represent the Amathole Schools in the IPT tournament in June.

Interestingly, the East London side has been able to do the dirty work home and away this season.

A match they will look back on is the gutsy performance they produced vs. Grey Bloem in the Free State, where they played out to a (2-2) draw in a match affected by bad lightning before traveling to Komani to register a 3-1 victory against Queens at their reunion.

However, as much as Selborne go into the match as favorites, St Andrews will relish the undergod title, especially in their backyard.

Led by Dean Ferreira, the Makhanda side has had promising results, only losing four of their 14 matches while winning six and playing out evenly on four occasions.

Speaking to SuperSport Schools briefly during the week, Ferreira had this to say ahead of the match:

“The team has been performing well this season but have drawn their last two fixtures and are hoping for a win this week against Selborne,” he said.

“Players to look out for are Ross Gordon who is in good form and has scored in both the previous matches as well as Sibusiso Mxube who is a skilful player and was recently selected for the under 18 provincial team.”

Looking for a win in two matches, Ferreira and his guns will, however, be wary of a side that possesses the skills of players like Ben van der Merwe, Waeden Plaatjes, and Tre’ Gilbert, to name a few.

The clash will be played at the Webster field Astro, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00.

In other fixtures in the province, Dale College, who are still in search of their first win of the season go head-to-head against Kingswood College, while Pearson High will look to close the term with a win against Woodridge College.

Whereas the fixture between Gqeberha’s Grey High and Outeniqua has been called off.

    The teams:

St Andrew’s College: Connor MacNamara, Kamva Kese, Stuart Carr, Jake Coventry, Andrew Holmes, Sibusiso Mxube, Ross Gordon, James Grundlingh, Ian Meihuizen, Mark Ter Morshuizen, Hilton Lindhorst, Muhammad Moosa (GK), Drew Stockill Laurie Apps, Jonthan Mackenzie, Kumkani Kabane.

Selborne College: Charlie Caswell, Gray van Heerden, Daniel Gaylard, Shane Stagg, Ben van der Merwe (captain), Masibulele Siswana, Tre’ Gilbert, Daniel Conroy, Jacques van der Merwe, James Carr, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, Waeden Plaatjes, Cade Kock.

Dale College wrap up a perfect week in the Buffalo City League

GQEBERHA – King Williamstown’s Dale College put on an impressive display in the mid-week fixtures of the Buffalo City League and squeeze into the top five on the log standings.

Dale College, one of South Africa’s highly respected boy’s schools, had an incredible week that saw them bounce back in style having missed a number of fixtures earlier in the season.

Dale College has produced many sporting greats and has a rich history of sport and academics. They are known for producing Makhaya Ntini, one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting figures.

When they missed a number of fixtures earlier in the season, they found themselves in a difficult position and catching up to the log leaders appeared to be a rather steep mountain to climb.

This week, Dale College boys begun their catch on a positive note with two victories in two consecutive days.

They beat Bayville High School by a mammoth 3-1 score-line on Tuesday and followed up with a 2-1 victory over George Randell on Wednesday afternoon. As a result of their performances this week, Dale College climbed two spots up on the log and are well positioned at fourth place with three games in hand.

Mali Abrahams’ boys at Stutterheim High School still comfortably occupy the top spot on the log while Selborne College and the Center of Excellence take second and third spot.

In other results in the week, Merrifield College easily pushed Baysville High School aside and handed them a 3-0 defeat to conclude what was a difficult week for Bayville who also lost to Dale College by a huge margin earlier in the week.

Selborne and Hudson Park High School also locked horns this week in what was a close game with Selborne coming out victorious. The two teams put on a show in East London and gave their fans proper entertainment as the match saw seven goals scored and a 4-3 score-line in favour of Selborne High School.

On the other hand, the Center of Excellence continued their winnings ways by beating Cathcart 2-1 to maintain their third-place position on the log standings.

A classy performance from the Midlands side Michaelhouse added another notch to their list of wins.

This time taking on the Candies and winning away 34-19.

Rewatch the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The 1.96m tall Campbell Ridl, wearing the number 13 jersey, showed that he is a powerful centre, breaking through the Candies’ defences with brute force and scoring an excellent try.

Boys High scored their first try of the day after winning a line out and driving a strong maul towards the tryline by hooker Shaun Schurmann. The ball found its way across into the corner, where winger Ompfuna Jack Tsanwani scored.

With the score sitting at 15-12 to the away side, the game was still very much in the balance, with the potential for it to sway either way.

The Candies’ feisty number two again was in the mix again assisting and setting up flanker Stephen Adams to score a try.

A try for Michaelhouse hooker Thabo Njaba soon after the break, extended the lead by 10 points.

Two more tries from Leo Muziva and the Sharks Craven Week eighthman Wandile Mlaba both filled their pockets with a few points to enjoy on the bus ride home. This ultimately sealed the game.

Muziva’s try came from an innovative cross-field kick from Luke Davidson, which saw the winger leaping and gaining some air to convert.

Pretoria Boys’ High looked good for the majority of the match but a few small defensive errors created a few gaps for Michaelhouse to push for strong offensive plays.

The Candies take on Jeppe High School for Boys next weekend, who have shown this season they are a quality unit losing narrowly to Affies by two points.

Michaelhouse looks a good side, and will want to carry on this sort of momentum into their return fixture against Hilton College which takes place on the 16th of June 2023.

Where the hunt for their hundredth win over their rivals continues…

Player Profile – Chris Horak (Hilton College)

In a recent interview, we got some insights into the talented, level-headed and humble player that is Chris Horak. He was also recently included in the Sharks’ team for the prestigious Craven Week that will take place in July in George.

One of the many great sentiments that Chris shared was that he truly loves the game, and that is why he plays. He said that the day he stops loving the game is the day he’ll stop playing but assured that that day won’t happen anytime soon.

Chris was born into a rugby family. He spent his Saturdays alongside the field, watching his dad, and those coached by his dad, play the game he would grow to love. This instilled a lifelong passion that he carries to this day.

Chris’ father, Michael Horak, represented England in one test match against Argentina in 2002. He played fullback and wing for the Leicester Tigers, Bristol, London Irish, Treviso and Saracens in his proffesional career.

Horak sr. is an old boy of Grey College in Bloemfontein. He was part of the unbeatend side of 1995. Currently he is the High Performance manager of the Sharks.

When asked who his current favourite player is, Horak said with all the talent at the moment, he would choose Damien Willemse. His reasons being Willemse’s time on the ball, his mastery of the basics and the fact that he is a team player; a character trait highly valued by Horak.

With Chris being a flyhalf for Hilton, we needed to ask him what makes that position such an integral part of the game and what he brings to the position.

Correctly so, Chris mentioned how the fly-half controls the game. He stated that if a fly-half is scared to take the role seriously, the game won’t go the way you want.

Chris commented that he is not the flashiest player, but rather wants the team to grow as a whole. He is not selfish and instead wants everyone grow and perform well, everyone should have the chance to look good. Chris said “I’d much rather be in a star team than a team of stars”.

Chris credited his father as being his inspiration, saying he would love to follow in his footsteps. As time has gone on, Chris said he has also reached the phase where he wants to create his own legacy and grow every day. He wants to be someone to look up to, for the younger players and his team. Chris wants to inspire the next generation of Hiltonians.

When asked what the biggest obstacle was that he needed to overcome, Horak explained how some people assumed he only made teams because of his family name. Although at first, he let it get to him, it is not the case anymore. He says that they can talk, but he will work hard everyday and focus on his performance. The work will speak for itself.

Of course, the questions had to be asked, of what it is like to have a dad with such a strong reputation within the community. Chris said that his dad has put no pressure on him, he made it clear that he would back Chris with whatever he chose to do.

He backed all of Chris’ decisions and trusted him to do the right thing. Chris did say that is has been really cool having the father he does and that he has met some really cool people throughout his life.

Chris’ goals for the season are to keep growing as a player, inspire the next generation of Hiltonians and let the action do the talking. He wants to do well to pursue a career in rugby after school.
