  • Graeme, Dale play to thrilling draw

NewsGGraemDayThe Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day drew to a thunderous conclusion in Grahamstown on Saturday when the hosts and Dale College played out to a thrilling 14-14 draw.

It was a fitting end to a day of entertaining schoolboy rugby which drew thousands of spectators to Graeme’s Somerset field.

At this early stage of the season the games were often littered with errors, but there was no doubting the commitment of the players, with Grey High and Framesby arguably producing the best performances of the day.

The youthful Graeme side will be encouraged by their performance against the Dalians, who were on the back foot near the end of the game as the home team threatened to pull off a surprise win.

With the scores deadlocked, Graeme had a chance to edge ahead with three minutes left when Lakhanya Sam lined up a penalty five metres in from touch on the 22-metre line.

Agonisingly for the home supporters, the ball hit an upright and bounced back into the field of play where Graeme claimed possession. However, they then coughed up the ball and Dale were able to clear to the halfway line.

With time up, the home side put in a desperate final effort and surged down the left flank, only to be bundled over the touchline to leave it all even.

Graeme’s tries came from lock Hlomla Maranene and big No 8 Andrew McCallum, while Dale scored through wing Mzi Ngalo and centre Simelela Mbanzi.

The potent Framesby side, full of big forwards and attacking backs, were impressive in their demolition of Queen’s after falling behind 8-0 early in the match.

The Queenians failed to score another point as Framesby piled on the pressure up front and then unleashed their backs to run in six tries in their 40-8 victory.

Speedy fullback Sebastian Brandt picked up a hat-trick and other tries came from wing Jemaine George, centre Cadan-Wade Finnis and prop Ruan Smith.

After an early try by hooker Nathan Doster from a lineout drive, Grey conceded a penalty to Hudson Park, but thereafter took control as they powered to a 57-3 victory.

Wing Siviwe Zondani led the way with a hat-trick as the PE side ran in nine tries altogether, with flyhalf Matthew Easton kicking six conversions. The Hudson Park team just could not manage the power and speed of their opponents and there were eventually gaping holes in their defence as Grey moved into overdrive.

Marlow gave a typically gutsy performance against Selborne, but were ultimately outgunned by the East London side, going down 33-19. They trailed 26-7 at the break and actually outscored Selborne in the second half, but the deficit was just too big to make up.

Kingswood were good value for their five tries which brought them a 31-0 win over Pearson, while St Andrew’s had the edge in a well-contested match against Cape Town’s SACS, getting home 27-13.

The close nature of most of the games was set early in the day when Mary Waters held on for a 12-7 win over PJ Olivier, while Muir scored tries by Mlondolozi Goba (2) and Gershwin Williams to get the better of Port Alfred High 19-7.

The results from matches on the Somerset field were:

Mary Waters High 12 PJ Olivier 7
Muir 19 Port Alfred High 7
    Framesby 40 Queen’s College 8
    Selborne 33 Marlow 19
    St Andrew’s College 27 SACS 13
    Kingswood 31 Pearson 0
    Dale 14 Graeme 14

    Puntemakers:

Helpmekaar 20 (10) – Driee: Marx Brink, Joshua Jooste. Doelskoppe: Tiaan Botes (2). Strafdoele: Botes (2). Hoer Jongenskool Paarl 20 (14) – Drie: Gideon van Wyk. Strafdoele: Kian Meadon (4). Skepdoel: Meadon.

  • Affies moes hard werk vir eerste sege oor Stellenberg

Daar sal vanmore ‘n hele paar seer lywe in Stellenberg se span wees.

    Puntemakers:

Affies 28 (14) – Drieë: FC Potgieter (2), Johan Lategan, Jacques-Lois du Toit. Doelskoppe: Dieter Crafford (4). Stellenberg 21 (13) – Drieë: Conwill Conradie, Khyro van der Westhuizen. Doelskop: Nivan Petersen. Strafdoele: Petersen (2), Meyer Retief.

NewsGStStithiansThe defending champions of the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge, St Andrews of Bloemfontein, experienced a day of mixed emotions during the opening day of their title defence in Pretoria.

St Andrews was in trouble early on during their innings in their opening match during the finals tournament against St Stithians College of Johannesburg. The team from the City of Gold reached 149/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Contributions by Cameron Rowe (35), Jodi de Sousa (33) and Liam Mostert (29) with the bat playing a major role in posting a competitive total.

St Andrews was under pressure managing to score only 27 runs by the time their fifth wicket fell. They managed to reach 93/9, in the end, thanks to Reeza Alexander (33).

  • Who will be the 2019 Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge Champions?

NewsGCaptains2019Eight of South Africa’s top cricketing schools will battle it out at the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge at the University of Pretoria (High Performance Centre) from the 15th – 17th March, to witness the winning team crowned the top T20 cricket school in the country.

This year the six South African franchises will be represented by St Andrews School (Knights), St Andrews College (Warriors), St Charles (Dolphins), St Stithians (Lions), Waterkloof (Titans) and Paarl Gimnasium (Cobras). In addition to the franchise teams, the two Cricket South Africa(CSA) focus schools will be Hudson Park High School (Coastal Focus School and Queens High School (Inland Focus School).

This year’s National Finals will also see the Coca-Cola® All-Star team initiative making a return. During the Franchise phase, Proteas legend Paul Harris selected an All-Star Team to spread the talent search wider and provide the selected players with an opportunity to be part of the national finals.

Last year’s Coca-Cola All-Star team included the current SA U19 captain, Matthew Montgomery, that played against the Cricket South Africa hub side as a curtain raiser to the national final. Similarly, this year the Coca-Cola T20 All-Star team will take on a CSA Development Hub team. This will allow for an opportunity to create new memories on and off the field.

Puso Makume, Coca-Cola Sponsorship Manager says, “We wish all teams the best of luck as they take part in the competition. Coca-Cola Schools T20 Schools Challenge has seen several Proteas and franchise players that have participated in the tournament and it is evident that the tournament has been successful in identifying talent. We remain committed and dedicated to the development of future cricket heroes and proud to be part of the contribution we’ve made in the identification and preparation of our next cricket heroes.”

CSA CEO Thabang Moroe says, “The Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge can be regarded as our version of the FA Cup as it potentially gives every school the chance to compete first for provincial, then franchise and finally National honours. I congratulate not only those schools that made it through to the finals weekend but to all our schools who have taken part.

Obviously, the aim of CSA is to broaden the depth of our cricket which at the moment is dominated by our traditional schools as we go about our vision of making the game accessible to all. There have been some heartening developments here with two focus schools qualifying to play alongside the franchise champions in the finals weekend.

Our thanks to Coca-Cola who have been loyal sponsors of our Youth cricket throughout our existence.”
