  • Ben Vorster push Secunda all the way, while Oos-Moot secure vital victory over Liggies

Ben Vorster push Secunda all the way, while Oos-Moot secure vital victory over Liggies

It was without a doubt a different Ben Vorster Buffels team that took the field on Saturday against Secunda in Tzaneen.

The men from Tzaneen came close to causing a massive upset falling agonisingly short with 23-17. The clash between the two sides is part of the Shield-division of the SDC Noordvaal Cup.

Both teams struggled for rhythm early on, but it didn’t take Secunda very long to hit their straps, which definitely brought out the best in the Buffels’ defence.

Jean du Toit had another remarkable performance at ten for the visitors. Du Toit dictated play after absorbing relentless pressure from the Vossie defence.

He sealed the deal with an excellent try just after half-time. Left wing, Luan Lottering, also had another outstanding performance from the kicking tee with a 100% success rate, backed up by a phenomenal display of tactical kicking, keeping the Tzaneener’s under continuous pressure.

Upfront it was once again the leader of the side, Hanré Hattingh, who raised his hand with a fantastic all-round performance with ball in hand and an impressive display on defence.

For the Buffels it was their inside centre, Chadwin Storm, who laid the platform for his sides impressive performance. Storm set the midfield a light keeping the two Craven Week centres from Secunda on their toes for the full 70 minutes. He was well supported by the man on his inside Divan Spangenberg who has a knack of creating something out of nothing with his remarkable vision on attack.

The battle upfront was one to behold with Buffels’ eight man, Aza Mabe, getting stuck in, bringing a lot of physicality to the table, supported by his captain in the second row Aldo Blignaut the pair constantly wrecked havoc at ruck time and was the back bone of the hosts’ defence, but it deemed not to be enough as Secunda snuck over the line to claim another victory.

Oos-Moot managed to come out on top 41-32 in difficult conditions in Lichtenburg. The men from Pretoria got out of the blocks quickly to head back to the sheds with a 14-point lead at the break. For the visitors it was their stalwart from the back of the scrum Gert-Hendrik Grobler who shone with another two tries to add to his already impressive tally for the season.

Albert Joubert kept the hosts in the game with a solid performance from the kicking tee, backed up his captain and eighthman, Renier Rall, who had other good outing and also managed to cross the white wash.

Hugenote (Springs) bagged a much needed win against Jeugland to keep their hopes alive in the division. Their winning performance was led by their burly hooker, Aiden Mazirelle, who was all over the park and scoring a well-deserved try too boot.

Ligbron caused what might be arguably the biggest upset of the season thus far, beating Heidelberg Volkskool in a dominating performance on home soil.

Their eighthman, Kyle Alves, put in another big shift and showed why represented the Pumas at the Craven Week a couple of weeks ago.

Green Machine earns 33-21 victory in battle against the Knights

NewsGGlenwoodGlenwood were clearly here to play from the start, and it showed in the final result of 33-21. The Green Machine made quick work of gaining ground and getting near to the Knights try line.

When a penalty was awarded to Glenwood, Andrew Martins kicked the ball out metres before the try line. There was obviously a larger strategy at play, as Keegan Goosen used the lineout to give a short ball to Tyrique Hartnick, Hartnick returned it to Goosen and it was try time for Glenwood.

Johandrê van Rooyen put the conversion through, and Glenwood was seven up at the seven-minute mark.

Glenwood did a great job of putting pressure on Northwood, the Knights had possession and tried to kick downfield to gain some ground; van Rooyen and MJ Schoeman dived in front on the ball, chased it down and Schoeman earned a try for Glenwood.

Van Rooyen’s second conversion brought their lead to a solid 14-0.

Northwood came back in the second half with a new sense of determination, Siyanda Nkosi earned the Knights their first try of the game. Alu Nte sprinted towards Glenwood’s try line, offloaded to Nkosi and they were back in the game.

Cade Latham made the conversion to add some more momentum and narrow the gap.

Glenwood quickly responded by capitalizing on a loose pass, Okonta Chijindu chased it down and scored a try in the far-right corner.

The remainder of the game saw Northwood taking control, Kwenzo Dlamini broke through Glenwood’s defence and made the long run to score a try and Latham made the kick.

Some great passing down the line landed with ball with Nokuthenda Gunda who scored in the far-left corner.

With Latham’s third successful conversion, they had certainly narrowed the gap, however, Glenwood had gained too large of a lead and went on to win the game with a solid victory.

    Scorers:

Glenwood High School 33 – Tries: Keegan Goosen (2), M.J Schoeman, Okonta Chijindu, Tyrique Hartnick. Conversions: Johandrê van Rooyen (4). Northwood School 21 – Tries: Siyanda Nkosi, Kwenzo Dlamini, Nokuthenda Gunda. Conversions: Cade Latham (3)

  • Framesby on top against Grey High, Selborne victorious in exciting clash with Hudson Park

Framesby on top against Grey High, Selborne victorious in exciting clash with Hudson Park

NewsGFramesby1Jordan Luck started things off for Selborne College when they took on Hudson Park today, scoring a try just over three minutes into the game. It was a pushing war between both sides but Selborne managed to drive Hudson back over their line for Luck to put the ball down.

Daniel Larkin took on the position of fullback today instead of his usual flyhalf role, but one thing that did not change was his kicking abilities, easily making the conversion to put Selborne seven points ahead. It is evident why Luck and Larkin represented Selborne at Craven Week.

Hudson did not take their time to respond, Landile Gidi booted the ball downfield and to the right to set off a lineout. They capitalized off this when Luthando Yase got a hold of the ball, steamrolled Selborne’s defence and earned a try.

Anjolauluwa Sogbanmu finished off a great play by Selborne when he faked a pass, completely threw off Hudson’s defence and scored a try.

Selborne’s teamwork definitely gave them the edge, ever pass would find its way to the right player at the right time. It was no exception when Amani Somana sent a low pass to the left, which was received by Larkin, he offloaded to Erich Gravett and it was try time.

Hudson really hit their stride after their successful lineout about 21 minutes in; the ball was offloaded to Yase who broke through the defence, he passed it on to Siyamthanda Klass who stormed ahead to score a try.

This built some momentum; quick hands would lead to another try by Landile Gidi not long after. When Gidi converted his own try, it was now an even 17-17.

Selborne were determined to take the lead again in the second half, Gravett used a couple of dummies to get through the defence and with a well-timed offload, landed the ball with Larkin, who put Selborne’s fourth try on the board. When Larkin converted, the lead had been reclaimed.

There was no selfish play from the Selborne side, Luck had possession and was charging downfield, he offloaded to Siya Sakhela, Sakhela sent it to Anjolauluwa Sogbanmu who earned his second try of the game.

Sakhela went straight from creating an opportunity to seizing one as he scored the next try for Selborne. When Larkin put his third conversion through, it was 36-17.

Hudson would have the last play and the last say of the game with a try from Qiqa Qwesha, however, it was not enough to take the lead.

Selborne played a very strong game and won the match 36-22.

Nico Malan succeeded in defeating a very strong Kingswood side today.

Blaine Isaacs used full pace to evade Kingswood defence, offloading to Dominic Malgas who scored the first try for Nico Malan and of the game. Not even a minute and a half into the game.

Nico Malan maintained this five point lead for nearly 21 minutes of the game, at which point they increased that to a 12-0 lead with a try from Owen Breda and a conversion from Dominic Malgas.

Kingswood were determined to put some points on the board before the end of the first half, and they did just that, with a try from Tadiwa Chikutiro. They spread out wide, got the ball to the far right and Chikutiro chased it down for the five points.

Kingswood opened the second half with a try to get back into the game, however, Nico Malan was ready to fight back.

Nico Malan took the victory after a highly competitive game at 26-20.

    Scorers:

Selborne College 36 Tries: Jordan Luck, Anjolauluwa Sogbanmu (2), Erich Gravett, Daniel Larkin, Siya Sakhela. Conversions: Daniel Larkin (3) Hudson Park High School 22 Tries: Luthando Yase, Siyamthanda Klass, Landile Gidi, Qiqa Qwesha. Conversions: Landile Gidi.

Thompson shines for Stellenberg in big win against Rondebosch

The first round of fixtures of the third term in Cape Town delivered on all expectations. There were upsets, big wins, draws, and games decided by the smallest of margins in the dying seconds.

Stellenberg beat Rondebosch Boys’ High by 20-17 thanks to an unforgettable performance by their winger, Ruben Thompson, who scored all of their points with two tries, two conversions and two penalties. The last penalty he converted was also the last act in the game, as the Jade Brigade clinched a statement victory over one of the in-form teams in the city.

Though Thompson did the scoring, Stellenberg owes its success to the collective efforts of the forwards at scrum time and the energetic defending by the entire team.

With only 20 minutes left, Stellenberg were still trailing by 17-7 but their relentless pressure paid off and the home team managed to overtake Rondebosch in the remaining time.

Hoërskool Durbanville and SACS drew at 22-all in what was a thrilling battle with SACS stepping up their game from before the holiday break to deny Durbies the win they were looking forward to.

With Durbanville’s record this year looking very strong and the visitors having a tough start to their season, it looked like this may be the year for the hosts to avenge the 100-0 loss in 2017, but SACS played well to stop them from employing their backline to its full potential.

Durbanville’s star centre, James Nero, scored a brace for his team, standing out once again in this game.

Nero represented Western Province at the Academy Week and he has recently been selected as part of the SA u18 Sevens team to compete in Trinidad and Tobago at the Commonwealth Youth Games in August.

Wynberg Boys’ High also kicked their term off with a strong performance, beating Melkbosstrand 63-0, running 11 unanswered tries by the vistitors.

Diocesan College hosted the touring Haileybury College and Rugby School from the UK. Bishops’ first team beat Haileybury comprehensively 67-12 and their second team saw away with Rugby 32-7.

There was absolutely nothing to separate Strand and Milnerton who ended at 19 a piece after going into the halftime break at 7-all.

DF Malan‘s general in the midfield, Zander Enslin (flyhalf) scored 25 points with a try, seven conversions and two penalties in his team’s 60-7 romp against Jan van Riebeeck.

The third term’s rugby fixtures kicked off with some thrilling action in the Western Cape with the highlight being Boland Landbou beating Paarl Boys’ High for the first time since 2009 at the Buco Brug Street Stadium in Paarl.

Catch all of the action on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

After trailing by three points (15-12) at halftime, Boland Landbou got the most out of the second half to end their losing streak against Boishaai with a 26-22 victory.

Their Western Province Academy Week flyhalf, Retagen van Rooi, was in amongst the action again, scoring a try in the final moments of the first half to reduce their deficit at a crucial moment right before the break and converting three of their four tries.

Paarl Boys’ High’s SA Schools fullback, JC Mars, opened the scoring early on to get the home team on the front foot, but they were definitely missing the likes of Divan Fuller (flanker), one of their other SA Schools players, and their big lock Van Heerden Pretorius.

Though the visitors seemed fired up in the second half, it was the Boishaai winger, Scott Nel, who drew the first blood again when he ran almost the length of the field to score against the run of play and give his team a buffer to work with again.

Boland were relentless however and two tries by Hans Verster (lock) and Enslin Claasen (winger) gave them the lead which they defended bravely in the final moments to secure their first win against the Paarl Boys’ team since 2009. That year Boland Landbou also beat Paarl Gimnasium.

In Stellenbosch Oakdale seemed to be giving Paul Roos a good run for their money, but the home team was already regaining control of the game when a red card to one of the Oakdale players for a dangerous tackle seemed to seal their fates.

Paul Roos’s centre, Samuel Badenhorst, scored the final try to secure another victory for the Stellenbosch side.

Badenhorst has recently been selected as part of the SA u18 Sevens team to compete at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in August.

Charlie Hofmeyr had to rely on the many kickers in their team to edge past Hugenote. Three different players scored off the kicking tee for Charlies. Lawrence Jantjies (winger), Phillip du Plessis (centre) and their SA U18 Sevens representative and flyhalf, Luan Giliomee all took the kicking responsibilities at different points in the game and though the home team scored more tries, their shared abilities were enough to secure them the win with a single point (23-22).

Robertson ran 13 unanswered tries by Hoërskool Stellenbosch on their own home field to win 87-0.

Worcester Gimnasium also continued to impress, beating the visiting Parel Vallei comprehensively 26-3.

Liam Pekeur, Motagu‘s centre, scored 12 points with a try, two conversions and a penalty in their nailbiting 28-26 win over Overberg.

Kasselsvlei‘s centre, Damian Jacobs, scored all of his team’s points with two tries and a conversion as they beat Fish Hoek 12-8.

Porterville‘s left winger, Brendon September, also managed a brace in their 40-7 triumph over Dirkie Uys.

In match of the day, Maritzburg College ran havoc at Affies by securing an impressive 50-31 victory. The Witbulle were stunned by a roaring Maritzburg team who brought the heat on a chilly day in Pretoria and beat the hosts for the first time since 2014.

Affies lead the charge scoring within two minutes of the match and looked poised to put on another cracking offensive performance when they scored a second try shortly after.

Wingers Eagan Roux and Stephan Brits helped themselves to two tries each during the course of the match for the Witbulle.

However, Maritzburg’s Luc Du Toit had a fantastic day with the boot, and had the Midas touch, turning everything into gold. He made the best of every opportunity by converting a whopping 10 kicks (5 penalties and 5 conversions) and scoring a try, leaving with a personal tally of 30 points.

It was a clash of two schoolboy titans, and supporters were treated to a spectacular match of rugby. Try of the day went to South African Schools Luyanda Kunene, who gathered a neatly placed grubber kick which the speedster made sure didn’t go to waste.

Maritzburg have shown their class during the season, but this sums up how well it has gone, winning away on exchanges are always a highlight for any schoolboy.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

On the other side of the train track Pretoria Boys’ High School faced a rampant King Edward VII. The Red Army brought a strong side across in what was an action-packed match which resulted in 32-23 win, seeing the side win for a second time this season.

The visitors packed a punch scoring two early tries in the first half, where they quickly applied pressure on the hosts, flanker Thandolwethu Biyela broke through the defensives of the hosts and found the first points of the day.

Vusi Moyo was back to his ways and impressed with his kicking for KES, but Boys High number ten Tebogo Nchabaleng was not to be out matched as he showed his running and handling skills.

The match-up between the two hookers, proved to be an exciting sub-plot to an exciting match of rugby. With ten minutes to play South African Schools hooker Siphosethu Mnebelele received a yellow card for a late tackle on his counter-part Shaun Schurmann, who was more than capable of putting up a tough challenge for the burly number two from KES.

In Johannesburg, Jeppe High School for Boys cruised to a 31-point victory over Parktown Boys’ High School, and carried on their form from where they left off in June.

The day started off with a tribute and salute to Parktown’s Andrew Van Zyl (Deputy Headmaster), as he stepped down from his position as the first XV coach which has spanned over the past 15 years.

The rugby got underway to a flying start with Jeppe throwing the kitchen sink at the hosts and coming hard early on in the match, which made it difficult for any sort of comeback, with the score reading 35-7 at halftime.

Jeppe were brutal on their offensive play as they accumulated eight tries amongst themselves and ran merry amongst themselves with both centres Exauce Kevani and Khuthadzo Rasivhaga scoring two tries each.

It would have been tough for the departing Van Zyl, to watch his side go down like this, but the players showed some fightback scoring a try in the final minutes to reduce the deficit through winger Reval Meth.

  • Kwaggas and Paarl Gim end all square for the first time since 2012

Kwaggas and Paarl Gim end all square for the first time since 2012

GEORGE, SOUTH AFRICA – JULY 22: Dewald Gerber of Outeniqua in the tackle during the Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools rugby match between Hoerskool Outeniqua and Paarl Gimnasium at Hoerskool Outeniqua on July 22, 2023 in George, South Africa. (Photo by Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images)

The third-term fixtures kicked off with an epic battle between Outeniqua and Paarl Gimnasium in George.

The conditions underfoot meant that neither team could fully utilize their backline and the forwards had to battle it out for a low-scoring but hard-fought 10-all draw.

This is only the second time the two teams have ended equal in their last 11 matches, the last time it happened was in 2012 when Handré Pollard was captain of Paarl Gimnasium and Warrick Gelant and Duhan van der Merwe were among the Kwagga first team players of that year.

Though it might not be the big statement victory Outeniqua would have wanted for their centenary year, the home team played well to contain a Paarl Gim that has been on fire this season.

Their efforts came at a price though, as their star flanker, Jeffwin Wesso, had to be helped off the field with an ankle injury 22 minutes into the first half.

Wesso has been selected to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in August. Hopefully, this injury does not rob him of that opportunity.

Outeniqua opened the scoring when their talisman winger, JJ Daters, who was one of the 15 Outeniqua players in the SWD team at the Craven Week held at their school over the holiday, expertly finished a beautiful try on Outeniqua’s first visit to the Paarl Gim 22 meter area after eight minutes of play.

The SA Schools fullback, JT Strydom, converted to give his team a 7-0 lead with what was to be the last points of the half.

Outeniqua came out after halftime wearing their fresh centenary celebrations jerseys, but the visitors from Paarl immediately made them work hard on defence again and finally found their way through with their big eighth man, Nicus van Coller, scoring shortly after the break.

Strydom extended their lead with a penalty conversion, ultimately saving his team with his kicking proficiency in challenging conditions as his opposite number found it difficult to add the extras.

Paarl Gimnasium’s Academy Week winger, Freek de Kock, looked exciting throughout and was selected as the Man of the Match for his efforts. De Kock scored the try of the day to draw the visitors level, slicing through the Outeniqua defence that had been impenetrable for most of the match.

Outeniqua’s grade 11 flyhalf, Andrew Stopforth, stood out for his team and will be a player to watch next season. In a frantic game with a huge amount of pressure on them, Stopforth remained calm and fulfilled his duties expertly.

His hooker, Nathan Smith, was also immense for their side with his efforts over the ball in the rucks.

With two conversions and a penalty attempt missed, Paarl Gimnasium will feel like they should have been able to clinch that match, but all in all, it was a fair result for two extremely proud teams.

This fixture is fast becoming one of the highlights on the calendar with both of these schools continuously growing and improving their rugby programs.

Hoërskool Punt nearly had a clean sweep in Despatch, were it not for their two u14 teams that narrowly lost to the hosts.

    Scorers:

Outeniqua 10 (7) – Try: JJ Daters. Conversion: JT Strydom. Penalty: Strydom. Paarl Gimnasium 10 (0) – Tries: Nicus van Coller, Freek de Kock.

    Other scores:

    u19A – Bridgton 15, Oudtshoorn 7; Hoërskool Punt 24, Despatch 18.

u19B – Paarl Gimnasium II 38, Outeniqua II 7; Hoërskool Punt II 19, Despatch 15.
