The Limpopo Blue Bulls has announced their respective teams for the up-and-coming provincial weeks to be held in June and July.

The team travelling to George to compete in the annual Craven week will be packed with talent from up North.

Merensky Landbou Akademie will have the most representatives making the trip down to the Western Cape.

Seven of their players will form part of the 23-man squad with the fullback, Mpho Mohlala, making his return to the set up. Mohlala represented the Limpopo Blue Bulls team at last season’s tournament where he came on as replacement, but will look to make the 15-jumper his own after making the starting line up this year.

The burly blind side flank, Waldie Haasbroek, will also be a force to be reckoned with and has shown throughout the season that he is a man on a mission with ball in hand. Out wide winger Mahlatse Semosa will be a thorn in the side with his elusive running and clean pair of heals.

Hoërskool Pietersburg will be proud to say they have six players in the squad of 23. Lock Dewan Gobey will want to continue his great form and make a statement at this years’ tournament. His colleague Hanno van Zyl has also been in devastating form on outside centre.

Van Zyl will look to link up with counterpart and inside centre, Wian Terblanche.

Both have the vision to create tremendous amounts of space on his outside with their ability to run good lines and to offload just before contact. Scrumhalf, Divan Brown, will want to be as quick as he’s been throughout the season providing clean ball to a very nifty back line.

The man from Warmbad, Pule Sebola, will have a huge chip on his shoulder being their only representative. Sebola will feature in the number 14-jumper.

The Protea netball squad for the 2023 World Cup and their schools

The Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool of Pretoria has the biggest representation with two players in the Protea’s netball squad that will take part in the World Cup tournament that will be hosted by South Africa in Cape Town from 28 July until 6 August later this year.

The two Affies in the squad is Jeante Strydom (goal scorer) and Izette Griesel (wing attack). The school from Pretoria has a proud netball heritage and has been one of the top-performing schools at school level. Their netball programme is headed up by Maggie du Plessis, who received a Service Award in 2021 from World Netball.

Affies’  first team is also coached by a former Protea captain Amanda Mynhardt. South Africa are captained by Bongiwe Msomi at this year’s World Cup tournament which will be hosted by the International Convention Centre in the Mother City.

Msomi is a product of the Chief Luthayi High School in Durban.

Bloemfontein also boasts of some representation within the squad. Elmere van der Berg (Jim Fouche) and Fifi Nketsa (Sentraal) both completed their schooling career in the City of Roses.

Phumza Maweni (goal assist), who will play in her last World Cup, attended Kwamfundo Secondary in Khayelitsha. She however didn’t play netball in high school and only took up the sport again after leaving school.

This will be the first time that South Africa will host the World Cup which is held every four years. The inaugural tournament was hosted by England back in 1963.

South Africa is grouped with Jamaica, Wales and Sri Lanka in Group C for the tournament. The Proteas’ best performance at the World Cup is still when they were runners-up in 1995 losing against Australia (48-68) in the final.

The Proteas did bag a fourth place in the last World Cup which was hosted in Liverpool, England in 2019.

Karla Pretorius (Zwartkop) was named the Player of the Tournament after the conclusion of the World Cup in 2019. She will once again be in action for the Proteas this year. Msomi, Griesel, Maweni and Khanyisa Chawane (Ben Vorster) are the only returning members from the 2019 squad with Pretorius.

  • A Tale of Two Old Boys’ Days

A Tale of Two Old Boys’ Days

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

Big traditional schools come with the additional nuances of long-standing rivalries and old boys’ days which add a layer of interest to the matches. Throw in the attendance of some well-known old boys and you have a recipe for entertaining fixtures.

This past weekend saw two different old boys matches unfold with St Alban’s College beating St Stithians comfortably (36-14), and St David’s Marist losing narrowly to St Bendict’s (17-3) in a physical match dominated by some big tackles.

Rewatch both matches on SuperSport Schools (www.superschools.co.za).

St Stithians travelled across to St Alban’s College where the hosts put on a mighty performance to win the return fixture against their long-standing rivals.

The Hoops were particularly brutal scoring five tries amongst themselves, with a number of players getting their names onto the scorecard.

St Stithians struggled to keep up with the pace of play but were able to find the try line on two separate occasions once by lock Mathula Sikhakhane and the second by prop Keabetswe Mapukana.

A special mention to Druan Visagie had a stellar game scoring the first try of the match and kicking well for St Alban’s notching up a total of 14 individual points.

St Stithian’s have an opportunity to bounce back against St Benedict’s College on Wednesday 14 June 2023, in their return fixture.

In the other match of the day St David’s Marist were eager to put on a show and were pumped up due to the excitement around their old boy’s day but could not hold back St Benedict’s College.

The home team drew first blood with a penalty from the boot of flyhalf Jayden Jagga, kicking over his first of three converted placement kicks for the day.

Outside centre Raymond Hassim, scored the first try of the day for Bennies with a long-range intercept, gathering the ball and making a sprint for the try line.

With a few well-worked phases with the forwards and some strong mauls, the away team scored again this time through eight-man Jason Cutler.

St David’s scored through Theo Fonternel after a poor kick-off receive by Bennies.

Bennies Fullback Onkgopotse Monaheng, kicked well for the visitors slotting over two conversions and a long range penalty kick.

At halftime, the score read 17-10 to Bennies, but St David’s would have felt in a good position to claw themselves back into contention, knowing that they had their home support behind them.

It was a very physical match with plenty of tackles between the two sides and a large number of double hits coming in the second half, with both teams picking up a yellow card each.

St David’s chucked absolutely everything at Bennies. With seven maul attempts inside St Benedict’s twenty-two, St Davids were not going to give up as victory was well within their grasp.

St David’s held most of the possession, but St Benedict’s absorbed the pressure very well ensuring that the home team did not score any further points.

Another feisty performance will be needed from St David’s against The Hoops on Friday 16 June 2023. The Pretorian school have found a winning formula since making a few changes to the make-up of their side. St Alban’s College have now won two matches on the trot.

  • TS Galaxy with another 2-1 victory defeating the top teams in successive weeks

TS Galaxy with another 2-1 victory defeating the top teams in successive weeks

TS Galaxy have been handing defeats to the top teams in recent weeks as they close another week with a 2-1 victory by defeating Kaizer Chiefs at Naturena Village.

This comes after a week where they defeated the inform log leaders of the u19 Gauteng Development League, Mamelodi Sundowns which left everyone stunned.

TS Galaxy’s impressive victory on the road means they are cementing their position in the top 8 as they will likely push even further as the league is still halfway.

TS Galaxy took an early lead through a penalty that was given to them in less than five minutes into the game. Despite going down in the first half, Kaizer Chiefs took full control of the game. The Glamour boys continued to attack, while TS Galaxy’s defence remained organised and unshaken.

Their goalkeeper also lived up to the task as Kaizer Chiefs’ attacks relentlessly looked for an equalizer. Kaizer Chiefs would go to play impressive football and dominate the game however their efforts were not enough as the game ended in a 2-1 loss at home.

Kaizer Chiefs lost an opportunity to close the gap between them and Mamelodi Sundowns. The top 4 of the GDL log has now been shaken once again as teams such as Highlands Park collected crucial points during the weekend.

School of Excellence on the other hand lost an opportunity to also put pressure on Kaizer Chiefs as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Panorama FC.
