  • Selborne mentally prepared for Grey College battle

Selborne mentally prepared for Grey College battle

Selborne College first team coach KJ Friend believes his side’s clash against Bloemfontein’s powerhouse school, Grey College, will physically and mentally be the toughest game of their season as the two giants prepare to meet on Friday night in the Free State.

The team from East London has had a promising start to the season, building momentum and team cohesion during pre-season. Early in the season, they have shown glimpses of a side gelling together under the leadership of Ben van der Merwe.

“It’s been a good pre-season; we had a good buildup, and there’s a good team culture, which has contributed to a good team environment,” said Friend, speaking to Super Sport Schools.

“We went into our first games well prepared and had a successful pre-season festival at the Tony Godding Festival, where we won 3/4 games against Parel Vallei (5-2), Voortrekker (5-0), and Woodridge (3-1).”

After a successful home festival, the side went on tour to the Netherlands, where they won all six of their matches before playing out a one-all draw against Pearson from Gqeberha in their first derby of the year.

They quickly rectified that draw when they claimed the big scalp of Queens College (3-1) in the last quarter in what was Queens 165th reunion two weeks ago. The coach revealed how much of a confidence booster that victory was for the team.

“We knew that Queens was going to be a tough game for us,” he said.

“Every year, they always come running hard at us, and they were never going to stop, especially in their reunion.” “For us, we just made sure we kept it tight and closed off the game towards the end.”

Without a doubt, Selborne is one of the few fortunate sides to have kept the bulk of their senior players from the previous season.

Experience has come in handy so far, with a mixture of old and new in the starting 11. KJ is adamant that the experience and a good run that saw them finish third in the Hibbert Shield Hockey Festival will come in handy this weekend as they face arguably their toughest opponents in the calendar year.

“Physically, it’s the toughest game of the season, and Grey is always a competitive side no matter what year,” added KJ.

“However, we come off a good tournament at the Hibbert Shield Hockey Festival in Gqeberha, where we played six games and came third out of 12 teams.”

“So, we’re taking that energy and that experience from that tournament into the Grey match, and we just need to make sure we’re physically and mentally prepared,” he ended.

For Grey College, the clash will again be an opportunity to stake their claim against another Eastern Cape side early in the year.

After recording a 60%-win rate in the pre-season Nomads Hockey Festival hosted in Gqeberha, the Free State side went on a further rough patch as they lost three of their five matches at the KES Easter Hockey Festival.

However, Director of Hockey Wayne Coetzee says the side has shown improvements in the weeks gone by, and the boys are fully committed to the program.

“We have enjoyed the season so far; like all seasons, it has had its challenges, and the Grey Boys have allowed themselves to grow into young men,” he said.

“They are fully committed to working hard and improving their talents every day.”

Coetzee’s side will be looking to send Selborne home with nothing to show; he believes the team is ready and preparations couldn’t have gone better.

“The boys have worked hard this week and are eager to show off the talents that they were blessed with.”

“We have a well-balanced team that will do anything to see one another succeed.” “It truly is a privilege to be working with these young men,” he concluded.

Kick-off between the two sides is at 19:00.

    The teams:

Selborne College: Charlie Caswell, Zenzo Xawuka, Daniel Gaylard, Shane Stagg, Ben van der Merwe (captain), Masibulela Siswana, Tre Gilbert, Murray Kemp, Riley Boardman, James Carr, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, Jaques van der Merwe, Waeden Plaatjes.

Grey College:  Roan Janse van Rensburg (captain), Eben Joubert (vice-captain), Gerrie Greyling, Jayden Leech, Jordan Verster, Wian du Plooy, Duncker Hohls, Dayne Kitching (vice-captain), Samu Lephoto, Luke Mosala, Dunrich Hoffmann, AC Delport, Handre van Staden, MJ Bam, Botha Barnard, Ayanda Ngxaki.

  • Wits keep nurturing the next generation of footballers in South Africa

Wits keep nurturing the next generation of footballers in South Africa

“If you are a true supporter of football, then you know how historic the culture of football is at Wits University”, Puseletso Magana said during an interview with him.

For generations and generations, the university has been working towards building a great future for great football players and young men who strive towards a progressive society.

In the 21st century Wits University continues to work with young players from the ages of 6 up to 23 years old. Its development structures are built in a unique way to allow progressive development for the young boys and girls that are part of the club.

Puseletso said players come from places such as Soweto, Centurion and many surrounding areas to be part of the club.

Despite losing players to other top academies in the region, Puseletso said they are committed to nurturing and providing an opportunity for the next generation of players who will contribute immensely to the national soccer teams of this country.

One of the exciting prospects of the Wits Juniors Football Club Vuyo Buthelezi recently joined the West Ham United Foundation of Football Academy.

Puseletso couldn’t contain the excitement and praise the young man for his hard working attributes and that they are finally paying off. In 2022 Vuyo Buthelezi was part of the Wits Juniors under 17 GDL squad that reached the semi-finals.

His hard work earned him a call to the u17 National Squad. Puseletso and the entire team of Wits had nothing but wishing good luck to the young man and that he will continue to learn not just as a soccer player but as a young man.

“The moral that this has given to the development is extraordinary, everyone is happy and proud of Vuyo”, Puseletso said.

The Wits Juniors Club Football has a team (under 13- under 19) playing in the Gauteng Development League competing with one of the best academies in the country: the likes of Supersport United, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and many more.

Puseletso finds the GDL to be a very important league that plays a huge role in the development of the Gauteng footballers.

He says week in and week out, these young boys are excited to play and compete with one of the top teams in the country and that is exciting as well as challenging for the team.

  • Historic competition to be known as the SDC Noordvaal Cup in future

Historic competition to be known as the SDC Noordvaal Cup in future

The oldest schoolboy rugby tournament in South Africa will in future be known as the SDC Noordvaal Cup.

The organisers of the tournament, the Noordvaal Schools Rugby Association (NVSRA) has managed to secure a title sponsor with The Skills Development Corporation coming onboard for the next three years.

The competition started back in 1920 as the AG Robertson Cup after which it was known as the Administrator Trophy (1922-1981). In 1982 it was renamed as the Directors Trophy until 1994.

In 1995 the competition got its first corporate sponsor with Beeld coming onboard. The competition was known as the Beeldtrofee untill 2016 when it became the Virsekerbeker.

The coverage from SuperSport Schools will also increase for the coming season.

The sponsorship was announced during a function at Loftus Versfeld with former Springbok Victor Matfield as the guest of honor. Matfield played in the 1994 final of the tournament where his school lost against Affies.

Netwerk24 and Jacaranda FM is the media sponsors of the competition.

The CEO of SDC, Daniel Gibhard, interestingly also played in a final of the tournament. He represented Potchefstroom Gimnasium when they were crowned champions of the Big Schools back in 2004.

The CEO of Provantage, Jacques du Preez, who are managing the sponsorship also played in a final. He was on the winning side for Randburg against Lichtenburg in the 1990 final. Du Preez scored a vital try in the 14-6 victory in a match his direct opposition was Richard Bands.

Bands played flank at school before moving to the front-row later in his career.

The participating schools come as far as Komatipoort in the east, Eric Louw from Musina in the North, Heilbron from the south and Vryburg and Christiana in the west. 832 kilometres from east to west and 655 kilometres from north to south.

This tournament is with the more than 200 schools that participate across five provinces without a doubt the biggest in South Africa.

For the second consecutive year, Louis Botha has been crowned the Absa Wildeklawer champions held at the city of Kimberley from the 28th of April to the 1st of May 2023.

A successful event that displayed spectacular talent, with top teams at the school level across the country. All competing for the bragging rights of becoming the second team to win Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament.

For Louis Botha, they were here to defend and take the title to Bloemfontein as they did with the first title. Louis Botha defeated Brebner High School (semi-finals) 3-2 on penalties after both sides held each in an entertaining draw at 2-2. Virginia High School on the other hand reached the finals by defeating Navalsig High School by a goal to nil.

Going into the final of the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament, it was clear the title had moved away from the province of Northern Cape to the Free State.

The match final between these two teams is one to remember for years to come, both teams showed impressive technical discipline, high pressing, and physical attributes making an even match and entertaining final for the spectators.

Virginia High School took the first lead in the 15th minute of the game. A great build from the back forced their opponents to commit an error that led to the first goal of the game. However, the defending champions, Louis Botha soon equalized taking the game to the first at one all.

Coming into the second half of the game, both teams continued playing impressive football, and as expected goals came in the second half. The game ended in a draw 2-2 taking the game into extra time.

Louis Botha showed why they are the champions as they soon extended the lead in the extra time. Trying to equalize and fight for the title, Virginia High School put in a good fight with high pressing, applying pressure, and forcing Louis Botha to play into their half.

    Uitslae:

Affies 23, Hoër Meisieskool Paarl 16; Menlopark 23, Hoër Meisieskool Oranje 20; Helpmekaar Kollege 23, Durbanville 20; Rustenburg 26, La Rochelle 19; Paarl Gimnasium 23, Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof 14; Garsfontein 20, Sentraal 14; Waterkloof 32, Diamantveld 21; Affies 22, Hoër Meisieskool Oranje 21; Hoër Meisieskool Paarl 27, Menlopark 25; Durbanville 21, La Rochelle 18; Helpmekaar 22, Rustenburg 18; Paarl Gimnasium 28, Sentraal 11; Bloemhof 18, Garsfontein 14.

  • Grasshoppers grab a smash-and-grab victory over Welkom Gimnasium

Grasshoppers grab a smash-and-grab victory over Welkom Gimnasium

    PHOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

KIMBERLEY. – Glenwood performed a proper smash-and-grab victory of 17-16 over Welkom Gimnasium in the opening match of the last day of the Absa Wildeklawer tournament here.

Fullback, Jaco Williams, slotted a penalty with time already something of the past to break the team from Welkom’s hearts.

Welkom Gimnasium enjoyed a comfortable lead of 16-7 at the break after playing some good rugby. Scrumhalf, Julian Samuels, as well as fullback, Naylen Goeda, keeping the Grasshoppers defenders busy.

Glenwood’s Williams scored just before the break to keep his side in the contest. In the second half the visitors from Durban found their rhythm and managed to claw back to get within reach of grabbing the victory.

Which they then grabbed via Williams penalty. For the Grassshoppers it was the outside centre, Johandre van Rooyen, and lock Layhtan Sheehan that could feel more than happy with their performances on the day.

Oakdale Landbou secured a well-deserved 18-5 victory over Dr. EG Jansen from Boksburg.

The team from Riversdal’s inside centre, Kurt Coetzee, produced a solid performance. He scored one of his side’s two tries and kept the scoreboard ticking over in the second-half with two penalties.

    Scorers:

Glenwood 17 (7) – Tries: Jaco Williams, Okanto Chijundu. Conversions: Carter McLelland, Williams. Welkom Gimnasium 16 (16) – Tries: Tashon Meas, Julian Samuels. Penalties: Renaldo Kiewiet (2).

Oakdale Landbou 18 (12) – Tries: Hanno Louw, Kurt Coetzee. Conversion: Zandre Conradie. Penalties: Kurt Coetzee (2). EG Jansen 5 (5) – Try: Ruan van Heerden.

  • Grey tem Garsies op Wildeklawer, Goeda gee Welkom Gim woema

KIMBERLEY.
