Rademeyer leads Paarl Gim to Super 12 glory

Alanda Rademeyer scored a brace to lead Paarl Gimnasium to their maiden Fairtree Super 12 title at Oranje Meisieskool, in Bloemfontein, on Saturday.

Up against their Boland rivals, HMS Bloemhof, Gim recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory to claim the coveted trophy.

Rademeyer, Gim’s star forward, added three awards to her winner’s medal, collecting the Player of the Tournament, Best Forward, and Top Goal Scorer accolades.

With their victory, Paarl Gim became the fifth team to win the Super 12 title, joining Rhenish Girls’ High, Eunice High, Die Hoërskool Menlopark, and Oranje.

Previously, their best finish was second place in 2023. Before that, they oscillated between fourth and fifth positions in six appearances, with a sixth-place finish in 2018 being the outlier.

“We had some learning experiences during the tournament. Being ahead 2-0 (against Collegiate) and drawing the match, and being behind (versus St Anne’s) 3-0, and drawing the match 3-3. So, there were definitely some lessons learned through this tournament, and the girls really dug deep to fight till the end,” Danelle van Zyl, the Paarl Gim coach, told SuperSport Schools Plus.

In the semi-finals, Gimmies proved they had the mettle to go all the way when they stopped last year’s winners, Rhenish, who had won all of their matches up until then, dead in their tracks. Paarl Gim was tested to the hilt, but they pulled through.

Leah du Plessis broke open a tight contest in the 33rd minute to give Rhenish the lead, and it appeared as if the defending champs would march on until Rademeyer kept Paarl Gim’s campaign alive with a goal six minutes from full-time. That strike sent the match to a penalty shootout and Van Zyl’s charges triumphed 3-1.

While taxing, their semifinal win left Gim invigorated for the final, where they met a well-organised Bloemhof side which boasted the second-best defensive record at the tournament. They had conceded only three times on their way to the final, which was bettered only by Rhenish’s two.

By contrast, Paarl Gim had conceded the second-most goals in the group stages, with nine, trailing only the 12 given up by Our Lady of Fatima. Paarl Gim, however, balanced matters by slotting 12 goals in the group stage, with Alanda Rademeyer setting the standard. In the final, she unlocked Bloemhof’s defence twice.

“Alanda is incredible. When she gets the ball, you wait for something to happen. This is the most consistent she has been throughout a tournament, and for an u16 player getting the Player of the Tournament award, that’s very special,” Van Zyl shared.

In the eighth minute of the title decider, Rademeyer broke loose after receiving a through pass from the back. Then, after outpacing the defenders, she had no trouble beating the advancing Bloemhof goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Marili Walters made it 2-0 barely a minute later with a touch of individual brilliance to put Gim firmly in control.

She forced a turnover in the Bloemhof half, then carried the ball into the circle before tucking the ball in at the far post.

In the 31st minute, Rademeyer fired in her 11th goal of the tournament and her second of the match when, after receiving a through-ball, she uncorked a shot on the move.

Imke Koegelenberg put the game beyond Bloemhof’s reach when she netted another field goal seven minutes later.

Despite trailing 0-4, Bloemhof kept working hard, trying to set an unlikely comeback in motion. Coach Jenny King‘s charges picked up a goal seven minutes from full-time through Elré Oosthuizen, who converted a penalty corner, but the result was not in question.

“Our girls really surprised me. I didn’t think they could run that much after a tough Rhenish semi. I am so proud of every single girl in our team, and they deserve that gold medal,” Van Zyl said.

“I told them to just go out and enjoy every moment of our last match together because this is a special group of girls.”

The hosts progressed to the semi-finals of the St David’s Marist Inanda Nedbank Challenge Cup on Saturday after scoring a comfortable 3-0 win over Hilton College in the quarterfinals.

King Edward VII School (KES) followed suit, beating the 2023 champion, Brebner 2-1. The Bloemfontein school was succeeded as the champion by Grey College in 2024, but the title won’t be returning to the Free State this year.

In the other quarterfinal clashes, Jeppe beat St Benedict’s 2-1, while a passionate St John’s vs St Stithians tie ended at 1-1 after regulation time. St John’s advanced, though, after a penalty shootout

Jeppe takes on St John’s and St David’s tackles KES in the semifinals at 09:00 on Sunday.

Day three of the tournament is given over to classification games, with the four losing quarterfinalists set to meet to determine the fifth to eight place finishers. Brebner plays Hilton and St Stithians meets St Benedict’s. The teams that missed out on the quarterfinals will be contest ninth to 16th places.

The final round of matches, including the final and third place playoff, is scheduled for 13:50.

The under-15 competition is played as a festival, with the teams that finished in the same places in their pools then playing a round-robin format. But, being a festival, no winner is announced.

The first round of matches between teams that topped their pools saw Jeppe edge out St Peter’s 1-0, Grey College and Hilton drawing 1-1, St Alban’s holding on for a 1-0 win over St Stithians, St David’s handing KES a 1-0 defeat.

With the support of Nedbank very visible, the St David’s campus was bursting at the seams on Saturday, drawing a large crowd to take in the action. Around the fields, the support and singing echoed. It will surely rise to an even higher level on Sunday when the title game is played.

Herschel Girls School continued their fine form at the Challengers’ Cup on Saturday and booked themselves a place in the final of the tournament, at La Rochelle Girls’ High, in Paarl.

The Cape Town school defeated St Mary’s Waverley 2-0 in the semifinals, setting up a title game against Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool (Affies) at 11:20 on Sunday.

Catch all the playoff action LIVE on the SuperSport Schools App.

The journey to the title-deciding clash was similar for both sides, with both dominating during the group stage while playing attractive hockey and scoring numerous goals.

They were both in Pool B, which Herschel topped after four wins in five matches, while Affies picked up three wins and 10 points to occupy second place.

In the semifinals, they faced St Mary’s and Hoërskool Garsfontein respectively, the top two teams from Pool A.

Herschel made a cracking start in their showdown with St Mary’s and opened the scoring with a well-worked field goal, netted by Anna Sherren, after only six minutes.

It was evenly contested after that, and it took Herschel another 32 minutes before they doubled their lead through Katie Featherstone, who converted from a short corner opportunity.

St Mary’s, the 2024 runner-up, gave it all they had but were kept out by Herschel’s stubborn defence.

Sunday’s final will be Herschel’s second of the season. They reached the final of the Belgotex Sport Girls Challenge in May but were beaten on penalties by Paarl Gimnasium.

Affies faced a familiar Pretoria rival when they met Garsies in the semi-finals. When the teams met a week ago in the Pullen Cup final, in Johannesburg, Affies scored a 2-0 victory.

It was much closer on Saturday, however, and the contest went down to the wire. Mia Pretorius scored early for Affies before Daniella Grobbelaar equalised in the 40th minute.

After regulation time ended at 1-1, a penalty shootout was required to separate the sides. Affies, who placed fourth in 2024, held their nerve and secured a slim 1-0 win to book their place in the final.

After three thrilling days of football, which have included some significant upsets, the Curro Halala Cup concludes on Sunday at HeronBridge College, in Johannesburg.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

The event, in its inaugural year, has captured the imagination and those taking in the action alongside the field on Saturday included distinguished coach and founder of the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools, Pitso Mosimane, the Executive Head of Waterstone College, JC Engelbrecht, and Curro CEO, Cobus Loubser, who engaged in a brief interview with SuperSport Schools Plus, set to be published at a later date.

On the pitch, champions, including Clapham High, Northern Academy, and Grey College duelled.

In the quarterfinals of the Cup on Saturday, Curro Soshanguve was eliminated by Norkem Park High in a penalty shootout, which ended 2-1 to Norkem after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Northern Academy defeated Camps Bay High 2-1 to move on to the final four where they edged out Grey College, winning 3-2 from the penalty spot after a tight 0-0 draw.

Clapham High, who began the tournament strongly with an impressive 4-0 victory over Glenwood High, went down 0-1 to Navalsig. While some may be surprised by that result, Navalsig has proved, in the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament and Mangaung Schools Football League, that they’re a formidable side, challenging and at times beating Grey College and HTS Louis Botha in league action.

Hillcrest High, in the red kit, has provide one of the most inspiring football narratives of the 2025 season. They’ll contest the final of the Plate competition of the Curro Halala Cup on Sunday. Photo: Curro Sport.

Unfortunately for the Bloemfontein boys’, though, their journey came to an end in the semi-finals where Norkem High triumphed 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

Following their exit from the Cup, teams such as Hillcrest High and Glenwood progressed to the Plate competition. In the quarterfinals, Glenwood hit their stride, delivering a significant 4-1 defeat to Sitintile Secondary.

Meridian Pinehurst turned on the style, recording two big wins. In the quarterfinals, they handed Westering High a 4-1 loss. Then, in the semifinals, they posted a staggering 9-0 victory over Flora Park High.

Hillcrest High showcased their strength and character with a narrow 1-0 victory over a determined Barberton High in the quarterfinals.

That set up a semifinal showdown between familiar foes, with Hillcrest facing Glenwood in a precursor of their Mancosa KZNHSFA Cowie Cup clash, which takes place on Wednesday. It was Hillcrest who triumphed on this occasion, grabbing a close 3-2 win.

After two dominating victories on the opening day of the Guschkie Top Schools Hockey Tournament, at Grey College, in Bloemfontein, Paarl Gimnasium showed no signs of slowing down on Friday, and they finished the day having maintained their sparkling, clean record.

Day one brought Gim 15 goals and two conceded. On day two, they kept two clean sheets while adding another eight goals to their tally.

In their first outing of the day, they cruised to a 4-0 win over Hoërskool Eldoraigne. Later, they repeated that score in a victory over Hoërskool Jim Fouché (JF), which left them firmly in control of Pool B.

In Pool A, Hoërskool Garsfontein brought Grey College’s perfect start to a halt, holding them to a 1-1 draw. Then, in a Bloemfontein derby, Grey edged out St Andrew’s School, scoring a tight 2-1 victory.

The first chukka was goalless, but Saints broke the deadlock in the second from a penalty corner. Grey replied with a well-taken field goal in the third chukka and added another in the fourth to add another win to their record.

After their draw with Grey, Garsfontein stayed in contention with a 2-0 defeat of Hoërskool DF Malan.

The day’s action began with Saints and Worcester Gimnasium sharing a goalless draw. The Boland boys had to settle for another draw in their second outing, although this time it ended 2-2 against DF Malan.

The chasing pack in Pool B endured a day of mixed fortunes. Die Hoërskool Menlopark and JF, who were level in the standings, began with a 1-1 draw, while Eldoraigne bounced back from their morning defeat to Paarl Gim with a 2-0 win over Somerset College.

Menlopark also beat Somerset College, wrapping up the day with a 2-0 win.

Hoërskool Zwartkop booked their place in the Noordvaal Cup final after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the hosts, Hoërskool Pietersburg, on Friday.

They’ll face the defending champion, Hoërskool Monument, in the title decider after Monnas cruised to a 6-1 win over Potchefstroom Gimnasium in their semifinal.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

For Zwartkop, the final represents a significant milestone in an already a memorable week. Their rise is particularly notable given that they won Section B of the tournament last year.

Diretcor of Hockey, Marthinus Gouws, was full of praise for his side’s resilience.

“Wow. It is a massive achievement for us,” he said. “We saw ourselves as underdogs this week, and the character the boys showed – especially being 0-2 down in our first game and coming back to win 3-2 [against HTS Witbank] – set us up for a good week of hockey.

“Finals don’t come around that often, and we are privileged enough to be playing in our second final of the year. Hopefully, the experience of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament [Shield] final will give the boys some comfort,” Gouws told SuperSport Schools Plus.

Zwartkop has already faced Monument this season. After sharing a 0-0 draw, they know a tough challenge awaits them.

“Playing against Monument is always a big game,” Gouws said, “and them being defending champion does give them the slightest of edges. But it’s finals’ hockey. Anything can happen.”

Gouws added that the final would be about more than silverware. It would also be about honouring his senior players.

“It is the final game for my matric boys, and they deserve a top-class performance from the team. Go and enjoy today, boys. Remember why we play this game, remember for whom we play,” he said

After losing out in the semi-finals, Potch Gim and Hoërskool Pietersburg will meet in the bronze medal match.

The fifth-place playoff features HTS Witbank against Hoërskool Nelspruit. They previously met in the Mpumalanga League final, with HTS Witbank winning after a penalty shootout.

The Witbank boys scored a 3-1 win over Helpmekaar Kollege on Friday while Nelspruit claimed a tight 1-0 win over Hoërskool Rustenburg. That leaves Helpies to face Rusties for seventh.

A 3-1 win for Hoërskool Waterkloof over Hoërskool Sasolburg set up Klofies for the ninth-place playoff against Midstream College, who downed Hoërskool Middleburg 2-1.

That leaves Sasol to take on Middies for 11th place.

After making winning starts on the opening day, Pool A’s St Mary’s Waverley and Hoërskool Garsfontein met on Friday morning and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Coach Cindy Brown’s St Mary’s side was dominant and scored early through Kyla Grobbelaar. Erin Krüger doubled their lead in the 28th minute, but the Garsies was not going down without a fight.

They clawed their way back into the fixture with two late goals, scored by Emma Van Rooyen and Erné Kotze, to snatch a dramatic draw and make matters in Pool A very interesting.

Later in the day, St Mary’s defeated Rustenburg Girls’ High 1-0, thanks to a Zara Colyn strike, while Garsfontein was held to a 1-1 draw by Fairmont High.

Fairmont played some good hockey on day two and will fancy their chances of sneaking into the last four. They’re currently in third place, behind Garsfontein and St Mary’s, with five points and one group fixture remaining.

Coach Wayne Coetzee’s Parel Vallei side occupies fourth place, followed by Springfield Convent School and St Cyprian’s School, who are still in search of their first win at the tournament.

Pool B is also tight, with Herschel Girls School and Pretoria’s Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool (Affies) setting the pace with seven points each after recording two wins and a draw in their three matches.

On Friday, Affies was held to a goalless draw by Paarl Girls’ High. Later on, Mikela Harmse notched a brace in a hard-fought 2-0 win over Hoërskool Outeniqua.

Herschel, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Hoërskool Outeniqua and defeated Durban Girls’ College (DGC) 2-1, with Georgia Nicklin and Teagan Williamson getting their names onto the scoresheet in that win.

The Pool B leaders square off on Saturday at 10:00.

Heading into day three, Paarl Girls’ High and Outeniqua lie third and fourth respectively in the Pool B standings, with four points each after three matches.

Their chances of making the semifinals are slim, but they’ll know that anything’s possible in tournament hockey, and things can change quickly.

Outeniqua takes on Springfield and DGC on day three, while Paarl Girls’ High tackles Herschel and DGC.

The action starts at 08:00, and all the matches will be streamed live on the SuperSport Schools App.
