  • Some South African flavour for Six Nations

Some South African flavour for Six Nations

CJStanderThe RBS Six Nations will have a strong South African flavour this year. No less than half-a-dozen South African born and bred players will be in action during the oldest international tournament on the globe.

The player who’s performance will be watch closely from South Africa when he make his debut is CJ Stander. The captain of Munster already made a huge impact in Ireland with his rugby. The former pupil from Oakdale Landou just outside Riversdal captained the South African u20-side in 2010 after also representing the team in the previous year.

Stander also captained the South African schools’ side in 2008. He also led the South Western Districts to the unofficial title of champions at the Coca-Cola Craven Week that year. They defeated Free State 31-25 in the main match in Pretoria. The eightman scored three tries in his side’s three matches at the tournament with his bullocking runs.

Stander also captained the Ostrich Farmers at the Coca-Cola Craven Week of 2007 which was held in Stellenbosch. Former Springbok captain Corné Krige is the only player to have led the South African Schools’ side and also went on to captain the country. Stander in future might also captain an international side in green onto the field after having the honour of leading the South African national schools’ side onto the field.

From the class of 2008 – Pat Lambie, Siya Kolisi and Elton Jantjes already made the step-up and represented the Springboks. Other players from this group who made the step-up to franchise level are Francois Venter (Cheetahs), Andries Ferreira (both Cheetahs) Ruan Smith (Brumbies) and Wandile Mjekevu (Sharks).

Richardt Strauss will also continue his career as an Irish international in the Six Nations. He is a former pupil of South Africa’s premier rugby school, Grey College of Bloemfontein. Strauss also represented the SA Schools’ side in 2004.

Dries van Schalkwyk will become his school’s first international rugby players when he gets his chance for Italy. Van Schalkwyk matriculated from St. Andrew’s School in Bloemfontein.

Former Springbok prop Guy Kebble also played for St. Andrews’ first XV while he was still in grade ten. Saints however don’t lay claim to Kebble as being a Springbok from their school. He matriculated from Diocesan College, better known as Bishops, from Cape Town.

The 31 year old Van Schalkwyk, a farm boy from Jagersfontein, is quite a journey man. He played rugby for the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Free State Cheetahs, Valke, Leopards, Boland and Southern Kings. He also took part in the annual Coca-Cola Craven Week as he represented the Central Region XV at the 2002 edition of the tournament.

Another South African who will take part in the RBS Six Nations is Braam Steyn. He represented South Africa u20 at the World Junior Championship of 2012. South Africa was crowned World Champions at the tournament they hosted.

Steyn is a former pupil of Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch and represented Western Province at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in 2009 and 2010.

France who had three South Africans in their squad for last year’s World Cup will only have fullback Scott Spedding in their squad for this year’s Six Nations. Spedding matriculated from St. John’s College in Johannesburg and represented the Golden Lions at the Coca-Cola Craven Week of 2004 in Nelspruit.

Spedding was also a more than talented cricket player. His bowling figures of 6/14 for Gauteng against Kei at the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week of 2004 is still the sixth best figures in the history of the tournament.

Scotland kept their two South Africans from last year’s World Cup in their plans for the Six Nations. Prop WP Nel and loose forward Josh Strauss will once again play for their adopted country. Nel, who matriculated from HTS Drostdy in Worcester, represented the Cheetahs in SuperRugby. Strauss captained the Lions’ side in the tournament. He is like Steyn an old-boy of Paul Roos Gimnasium.

  • Dates and venues for Coca-Cola Youth Weeks announced

SA Rugby on Tuesday announced a new structure to the 2016 Coca-Cola Youth Weeks, with the junior tournaments being hosted concurrently in Paarl and the Under-18 tournaments in Durban. In the past all the tournaments were hosted at different venues.

The Under-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week and Under-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week will be hosted simultaneously at Paarl Gymnasium from 4 to 8 July, and the Coca-Cola Academy Week and Under-18 Coca-Cola Craven Week will be hosted between 11 and 16 July at Kearsney College in Durban.

The Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Week, meanwhile, will be hosted at the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in Pretoria from 27-30 June.

“The new structure of our Youth Weeks will have several benefits, the biggest of which is that we will be able to ensure that the Mobi-Unit coaches, the national selectors, our High Performance staff and the SA Rugby Academy Coaches will be able to attend all the tournaments,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“In the past they either had to split up into two teams to keep an eye on all the tournaments or they had to attend each tournament for only a few days.

“Another advantage is that player education with regards to our rugby pathways, safety campaigns, referee recruitment programmes and contracting could be done simultaneously with both groups of players.

“The new structure will also create a festival of rugby at each venue for the players, their families and friends, while boosting the camaraderie among the players. With these changes, the players and supporters can look forward to an action-packed SA Rugby Youth Weeks series from start to end.”

Dates and venues for the SA Rugby Youth Weeks:

    · 27-30 June: LSEN Week – Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), Pretoria
    · 4-8 July: U13 Coca-Cola Craven Week / U16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week –Paarl Gymnasium, Paarl
    · 11-16 July: Coca-Cola Academy Week / U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week – Kearsney College, Durban

  • Vodacom Blue Bulls Under 19s… ‘New Blue Blood’

The start of the New Year is always an amazing time, as it bubbles over with hopes, dreams and a ton of anticipation. It’s always a little more exciting for us at Loftus Versfeld, as we officially welcome our new group of Under 19s to the #BullsFamily.

A group 50, carefully selected youngsters from across the country, took their first steps into a career of professional rugby today, as they attended an orientation ceremony hosted by the Blue Bulls Company. Various high profile members of the coaching and management team, including Vodacom Bulls Super Rugby Head Coach Nollis Marais, CEO Barend van Graan, President of the BBRU Gert Wessels, and High Performance Manager Xander Janse van Rensburg, addressed the players, together with their parents and loved ones.

Janse van Rensburg, who has already played a major role in getting these youngsters to Loftus, emphasized that the focus of the Blue Bulls Company has shifted back to nurturing the young talent within our ranks, specifically the players at Under 19 level.

This elite group is also bigger than in the previous years. With the Currie Cup season starting earlier in 2016, and overlapping with the Vodacom Super Rugby season, the bigger junior group takes pressure off the senior system, allowing them to focus on Super Rugby. This will also assist in alleviating the pressure and high demand that will result from the extended season.

“It is essential for us to believe in our youngsters and give them our full backing and support. We all need to remember that the bigger vision for these young men is not one that will be achieved overnight – it will take time, immense dedication and lots of hard work.”

He also went on to urge the youngsters to seize and enjoy every moment of this opportunity: “…you will be taught many skills not only on the field, but also off the field. Utilise these skills, maximise every moment and opportunity to grow and become not only a better player, but most importantly, a better person. Rugby will come and go, but life continues. It’s important to live a life of value and impact, one that echoes for an eternity, and one that leaves things better than the way you initially found it.”

The Vodacom Blue Bulls Under 19 squad for 2016:

FORWARDS: Simphiwe Matanzima, Anele Songca, Raynard Esterhuizen, Gerhard Steenekamp, Johan Grobbelaar, Nico Peyper, Franco Botha, Cole van Tonder, O’Neil Thiart, Ig Prinsloo, Mashao Mukhari, Christiaan Swanepoel, Hendre Stassen, Marius Verwey, Ruben van Heerden, Timothy Davids, Érik Groenewald, Vic Meyer, Adriaan Burger, Luvuyo Ndevu, Justin Levendal, Riekert Korff, Dylan van der Walt, Jaco Bezuidenhout, Tristan Dixon, Eduan Lubbe, MJ Hayes, Evan Booysen

  • SA u19 steams on in Cubs Week

SA u19 steams on in Cubs Week

The South African u19-side secured their second bonus point victory on the second day of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week against the Sunfoil Dolphins in Stellenbosch. The national side came out on top by 150 runs.

South Africa u19 batted first and managed to reach 206 mainly thanks to half-centuries by Wiaan Mulder (61) and Dean Foxcroft (56). The Dolphins were restricted to a mere 56 runs.

The South African team’s spin bowler Sean Whitehead was again the pick of the bowlers as he dismissed three batsmen while only conceding ten runs. He was supported well by Foxcroft (2/7) and Ziyaad Abrahams (2/12).

The VKB Knights can also still boast about being unbeaten in this year’s competition. They defeated the Cape Cobras by 73 runs. Wihan Victor (94) narrowly missed out on his century as he helped his side reach 261 runs.

For the Cobras Gavin Kaplan (63) and Vezokuhle Mtnungwa (48) stood firm with the bat. Philip Visser got rid of three of the Cobras’ batsmen for 37 runs with his spin bowling.

Rubin Hermann (96*), wicketkeeper of the Titans, was well on his way to scoring the first century of the 2016-edition of the tournament. He was however forced to retire hurt after suffering a knee-injury.

The Titans won the match against the Warriors by 90 runs. Matthew Nepgen (3/4), Beyers Swanepoel (2/12) and Ruan de Swardt (2/13) caused the most problems for the losing side with their bowling.

The defending champions, the bizhub Highveld Lions, is one of only three teams going into the third day with an unbeaten status. The other two being the Knights and die national u19-side.

The Lions will face both these two teams in the next two days. The Lions defeated Cricket South Africa’s u17 Invitational side by nine runs today. Muhammed Mayet (89) was in a devastating mood as he struck six fours and another half-dozen sixes in his innings. Mitchel van Buuren (51) also weighed in with a half-century.

  • SA u19 and Warriors kick off Cubs Week with convincing victories

SA u19 and Warriors kick off Cubs Week with convincing victories

STELLENBOSCH. The South African u19-side secured a convincing 159-run victory on the opening day of Cricket South Africa’s annual Cubs Week in Stellenbosch over the Unlimited Titans. The team sent out a friendly warning to the other sides in the tournament that an upset against them was unlikely.

It is the first time that the national side are participating in the tournament from which they are usually chosen. The side of coach Lawrence Mahatlane is using this year’s tournament as a training camp for the ICC u19 World Cup which will start later this month in Bangladesh.

Last year’s leading run scorer at the Cubs Week, Rivaldo Moonsamy (333), scored 81 runs against his franchise. He was given a second chance by the Titans through a dropped catch after only banking three runs. Wiaan Mulder (46) and Farhaan Sayanvala (39) also made valuable contributions with the bat.

The Titans managed only 122 runs with Ruan de Swardt (28) and Irfaan Hoosen (27) top scoring. Hoosen (4/40) was also his side’s best bowler on the day. The South African spin bowler Sean Whitehead (3/19) was the pick of his side’s bowlers.

The bizhub Highveld Lions probably have to defeat the national u19-side twice if they want to retain their title as champions. These two teams face each other on Thursday in their cross pool clash.

The defending champions didn’t experience too much trouble securing a six wicket victory over the Cape Cobras in their opening match.

Mitchell van Buuren produced an allround performance in which he got rid of three batsmen for only 32 runs to help retrict the Cobras to 197/8 in their allotted overs. He also scored an unbeaten 38 runs in the chase.

Ruan Haasbroek (69) and opening batsman Ricardo Vasconcelos (45) also made valuable contributions. Haasbroek continued his excellent form which saw him finish the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week as the leading batsman.

Not even an excellent bowling performance by Jean de Wet (6/54) could save the Sunfoil Dolphins from a 153-run defeat at the hands of the Warriors. De Wet rearranged the stumps of Liam Lindsey (20) with his very first delivery of the match in the 12th over. It was also the first wicket of the Warriors to fall.

The Dolphins were restricted to 83 runs thanks to some good bowling by Keagan Smith (4/28) and Jade de Klerk (3/17).

Kevin Pretorius (92) was the hero with his half-century in the VKB Knights’ victory of seven runs against CSA’s u17 Invitation side. He was run out in the 48th over by Justin Watson and wicketkeeper, Gavin Morris.

    Scorecards:

South Africa u19 281 (Rivaldo Moonsamy 81, Wiaan Mulder 46, Farhaan Sayanvala 39; Irfaan Hoosen 4/40); Unlimited Titans 122 (Ruan de Swardt 28, Irfaan Hoosen 27; Sean Whitehead 3/19, Dayyaan Galiem 2/26). South Africa u19 won by 159 runs.

  • Gauteng and WP to meet in main match for fourth year in a row

Gauteng and WP to meet in main match for fourth year in a row

NewsG Joel Veeran Gauteng and Western Province will meet each other for the fourth successive year in the main match of the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week at St. Georges Park in Port Elizabeth tomorrow.

In the three previous main matches the team who batted first came out on top each time. Gauteng won the main game in 2013 and 2014, while Western Province secured victory in 2012 in Potchefstroom. These two teams are also the only unbeaten sides going into the last day of the tournament.

Gauteng didn’t experience too much trouble in beating Mpumalanga by 104 runs in their encounter on the fourth day. While Western Province had to work a bit harder to defeat KwaZulu-Natal by four wickets.

Northerns’ wicketkeeper, Rubin Hermann (126*), helped his team to a convincing victory of nine wickets with his unbeaten century against KwaZulu-Natal. He also finished the match off in style as he struck a six from the bowling of KwaZulu-Natal’s captain, Tyron Koen, to take his team past the target.

Hermann faced 119 deliveries in his innings of which he dispatched 19 to the boundary. Five of these boundaries were maximums. He and Joshua van Heerden (51*) shared an unbeaten partnership of 169 runs over the second wicket.

Boland’s spin bowler Luke Philander picked up a five-wicket haul for the second time during the tournament in his side’s match against North West. With Philander (5/12) leading the onslaught North West was restricted to only 62 runs.

South Western Districts’ Todd Walker produced an allround performance of note against Border. Firs he hit an unbeaten 87 runs which helped his side reach 271/5 in their allotted 50 overs. He then also got rid of six batsmen for a mere 24 runs for the best bowling performance of this year’s Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week thus far.

    Summarised Scorecards (Limited Overs):
