  • SWD, Valke en Boland onoorwonne op SARU o.18-sewestoernooi

    Die Suidwestelike Distrikte is die enigste span wat al drie sy groepwedstryde op die eerste dag van die Suid-Afrikaanse Rugbyunie se o.18-sewestoernooi kon wen. Die Volstruisboere het die Luiperds (21-14), Oostelike Provinsie (31-5) en Namibië (26-12) in hulle drie groepwedstryde verslaan. 

    SWD sal more teen Boland in die kwarteindronde te staan kom. Boland en die Valke is die enigste twee ander spanne wat die eerste dag onoorwonne kon afsluit.

  • Ligbloues en Streeptruie gunsteling vir 2014-kroon

     

    Die Blou Bulle se skole-sewesspan sal vandag die taaiste groep in die jaarlikse interprovinsiale sewes-rugbyreeks moet oorleef indien hy sy aanspraak op dié titel lewend wil hou.

    Die vierde jaarlikse interprovinsiale toernooi word vandag en môre deur die Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp aangebied. Die Ligbloues is saam met die Leeus, die Griffons en die Pumas in ’n groep geloot.

    Die span van die Jakarandastad het spelers soos Andell Loubser, Ruan de Beer, Juandré Michau en Stedman Gans in sy geledere, wat hom een van die aanspraakmakers op dié titel as kam­pioen maak. Loubser en Arnold Gerber het die Suid-Afrikaanse Skolespan vroeër vanjaar ná afloop van die Cravenweek vir hoërskole in Middelburg (Mpumalanga) gehaal.

    Die Westelike Provinsie is die vroeë gunsteling om met die titel as kampioen weg te stap. Die span het vier spelers in sy geledere wat vroeër vanjaar in die Suid-Afrikaanse o.18-sewesspan was wat tot Afrika-jeugkampioen gekroon is. Hulle is Ivan Kunz, Edwill van der Merwe, Herschel Jantjes en Grant Williams.

    Die Ligbloues het nie hul twee SA o.18-sewesspelers, Eduan Keyter en PJ Toerien, in hul span ingesluit nie. Keyter het hom nie beskikbaar gestel nie.

    Vincent Maruping, die Vrystaat se SA Skole-speler, en die spelers van Grey-kollege se eerste span het hulle ook nie verkiesbaar gestel vir die toernooi in Krugersdorp nie. Die Vrystaters behoort egter met Shirwin Cupido aan die spits nie onderskat te word nie.

    Buiten die nasionale skolespelers Gerber en Loubser, sal nog vier SA Skole-spelers in die toernooi in aksie wees. Hulle is Edmund Rheeder (Luiperds), JT Jackson (Suidwestelike Distrikte), Jerry Danquah (Grens) en Cobus Wiese (Griekwas).
    Die gasheer, die Leeus, het geen spelers wat vroeër vanjaar in die Cravenweek in aksie was in hul span ingesluit nie. Die Valke is die verdedigende kampioen en die ontwykende Martin van Wyk behoort een van hul sleutelspelers te wees.
    Die Blou Bulle het in die eerste toernooi in 2011 gewen en die Vrystaat het in 2012 met die titel weggestap.

    THE weather forecast suggests sunny days (every schoolboy cricketer’s dream!) for the duration of Maritzburg College’s Oppenheimer Cricket Week, which takes place from Saturday to next Tuesday, and both participants and supporters are in for an absolute feast of everything that is good about the game.

    The matches to be played by the 18 teams take place in Pietermaritzburg as well as Richmond and Eston, and sees top cricket schools in action with the Gauteng contingent featuring the Johannesburg quartet King Edward VII School (KES), St Johns College, St Davids Marist, Inanda and Jeppe, as well as the Pretoria trio of St Albans College, Pretoria Boys’ High (PBHS) and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies). Of great interest is the inclusion this year of Westlake Boys’ High of New Zealand.

    The teams from the Eastern Cape are Hudson Park of East London and St Andrews College of Grahamstown while those from KZN are Maritzburg College, St Charles College, Michaelhouse, Durban High School (DHS), Kearsney College, Glenwood, Northwood and a KZN Development XI.

    Now in its 55th year, and hosted as always by Maritzburg College, this festival has players to watch out for in SA U19 cricketers Andile Phehlukwayo (Glenwood), Grant Roelofsen (KES), Ndumiso Mvelase (St Johns) and Lwandiswa Zuma (Maritzburg College), while other players with much talent in the College line-up include Sohail Mahmoud, captain Bryce Tullis, James Martin, Bradley Hope, David Small, Shaun Wormington and all-rounder Jean de Wet.

    St Charles College, who won’t be at full-strength each day due to exams, have much quality that includes captain Brent Kennedy and fellow top four batters Eric de Rauville, Zac Koutsouris and Mark Ortmann while opening bowlers William Squires, who took five wickets against Northwood two Saturdays ago, and the highly promising Kylan Naidoo are sure to trouble their opponents’ top-order.

    Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge 2013/14 – Results Day 1

    T20School TrophyKingswood College’s Marco Lombard produced the most impressive performance on the first day of the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge at Tukkies in Pretoria with his unbeaten century. He scored 110 runs from a mere 44 deliveries which included eight fours and ten sixes. This helped his side a mammoth target of 195 for Wynberg Boys’ High.  

    St. Stithian’s College produced the most impressive performance in the first round of the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge at Tukkies in Pretoria. Saints defeated Westville Boys’ High of Durban by eight wickets with six overs to spare. 

    Westville set a competitive 137/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The team from Johannesburg’s two national u19-players, Ryan Rickelton (50*) and Marques Ackerman (44), was in a destructive mood. Rickelton faced only 34 deliveries in his innings and struck six fours. Wiaan Mulder (21, 8b) struck three consecutive sixes in the 13th over of Alexander Whitelaw’s bowling to steer his side to victory. 

    Waterkloof’s national u19-player, Janneman Malan (30), was also instrumental in his side’s five wicket victory over Kingswood College. The team from Grahamstown was bowled out for 105 runs thanks to some good bowling by Johan Terblanche (3/21) and Kabelo Raseleka (3/28). 

     Grey College of Bloemfontein got their first appearance at the national final of with a winning start against Wynberg Boys’ High. The team from the City of Roses’ Raynard van Tonder (47) was named man of the match for his effort with the bat in the six wicket victory. 

    They needed ten runs of the final over and reach the target 132 set by the side from Cape Town.

    T20Schools logoThere will be a new champion crowned at the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge that will be held at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria from tomorrow until Sunday. The defending champions, Rondebosch Boys’ High, failed the qualify for this year’s national finals. 

    The six franhises’ representatives at the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge final are Wynberg Boys’ High (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Grey College (Chevrolet Knights), Westville Boys’ High (Sunfoil Dolphins), Waterkloof (Unlimited Titans), St. Stithian’s College (bizhub Highveld Lions) and Kingswood College (Chevrolet Warriors). 

    The final is for the 2013/14 champion as the scheduled final for last season in March was called off due to heavy rains in the highveld. Waterkloof is the only school in attendance with a previous national title under its belt. Their hopes will be on their national u19 player, Janneman Malan.

    Malan scored a double century during a 50 over match during last year’s CSA national u17-week in Stellenbosch. The double century was scored at Pniel. His side also has a formidable bowling attack in with opening bowlers, Henco Vorstman and Johan Terblanche, spearheading the attack. 

    Klofies was the losing finalists against Rondebosch Boys’ High in the 2012/13-season’s final. Their captain, Willie Ludick’s father, Edwin was a South African youth and junior high jump champion in the 1980’s. His personal best being 2.24m.

    St. Stithian’s College might have the most experienced side at the finals. Marques Ackerman, Ryan Rickelton, Brandon Glover and Nicholas Scholtz were all part of Gauteng’s side which finished last year’s Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Durban as the top dogs.  

    Grey College of Bloemfontein will make their first appearance in the national finals. They defeated Noord-Kaap of Kimberley by nine wickets in the regional final to book their place. Their two key batsman are Fritz de Beer and Raynard van Tonder. De Beer’s father also Fritz was the Blue Bulls Craven Week rugby coach with Jackie Tredoux when they as crowned unofficial champions at the 1996 tournament in Stellenbosch.

    Kingswood College of Grahamstown’s team also have a connection with the Coca-Cola Craven Week. One of their players, Cameron Hertz, were Eastern Province Country Districts’ flyhalf at this year’s tournament in Middelburg (Mpumalanga). Their headmaster, Paul Guthrie, is the tournament director of the CSA national u17-week that will be hosted in Johannesburg in December.

    Cravenweeku18 LogoDie Coca-Cola Cravenweek vir hoërskole sal volgende jaar vir die vyfde keer in Stellenbosch aangebied word. Dié toernooi sou aanvanklik vir die eerste keer sedert 1990 na Durban teruggekeer het, maar die feit dat Paul Roos Gimnasium volgende jaar sy 150ste bestaansjaar vieringe hou het ‘n groot invloed gehad dat die toernooi na die Kaap skuif. 

    KwaZulu-Natal se skolerugby-vereniging het hulle aansoek om die toernooi aan te bied terug getrek, na dit reeds aan hulle toegeken is. Die Westelike Provinsie het ook aansoek gedoen, maar die aansoek het glo nie die regte kanale gevolg nie en is so laat deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Skolerugby-vereniging (SASRV) ontvang. 

    Dit sal die vyfde keer wees sedert die eerste toernooi in 1964 dat die Cravenweek in die Eikestad aangebied sal word. Die Vrystaat het die Westelike Provinsie op die laaste toernooi in Stellenbosch met 52-3 in die hoofwedstryd verniel. In daardie Vrystaatse span was die Ebersohn-tweeling (Robert en Sias) aan die spits met toekomstige eersterangse spelers Coenie Oosthuizen, Pieter Labuschagné en Boom Prinsloo in sy geledere. 

    Die Streeptruie se span het spelers soos Nick Koster (kaptein), Johann Sadie, Jurgen Visser en Rossouw de Klerk ingesluit. Ander bekende spelers wat daardie jaar in die Eikestad in aksie was is Francois Brummer, Marnus Schoeman, Andries Ferreira, Gerhard van den Heever (almal Blou Bulle), Sampie Mastriet, Clayton Blommetjies, Rynhardt Elstadt (almal Boland), Lionel Cronjé (Grens), David Bulbring, Phillip van der Walt, JJ Engelbrecht (almal Oostelike Provinsie), Rudy Paige, Julian Redelinghuys (albei Leeus), Schalk van der Merwe, Joubert Engelbrecht (albei Griekwas), Cecil Afrika, Peet Marais, Jandré Marais, RJ Liebenberg, Alistair Vermaak, Branco du Preez, Hoffman Maritz (almal Griffons), Martin Bezuidenhout (Luiperds), Trevor Nyakane (Limpopo Blou Bulle), Marnitz Boshoff, Jaco Kriel, Howard Mnisi (albei Pumas), Pat Lambie, Guy en Ross Cronjé, Brynard Stander, en Dale Chadwick (almal KwaZulu-Natal) en CJ Stander (SWD).  

    Stellenbosch sal volgende jaar slegs die tweede gasheer word om vir die vyfde keer die gesogte toernooi aan te bied. Oos-Londen wat die eerste twee jaar in 1964 en 1965 die gasheer was, het ook in 1979, 1991 en 2009 die Cravenweek aangebied. Die Eikestad was voorheen in 1973, 1980, 1996 en 2007 die gasheer. 

    Paul Roos Gimnasium het volgende ‘n volgepakte jaar wat op hom wag. Die skool sal ook Suid-Afrika op die jaarlikse Sannix-toernooi in Japan verteenwoordig. Die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl het vanjaar in die eindstryd teen Hamilton Boys’ High van Nieu-Seeland met 15-11 die knie in die eindstryd gebuig. 

    Die span van Stellenbosch het al voorheen dié toernooi bygewoon. Dié skool was die eerste Suid-Afrikaanse span wat die toernooi in Japan bygewoon het toe dit in 2000 vir die eerste keer aangebied is. 

  • Aussie schools beat Fiji

    The Australian Schools team won the first of its three matches on its tour to New Zealand, beating Fiji Schools 50-15 at Levin on Friday evening.

    The bigger Fijians did not frighten the Australians who were too quick, too skilled and too creative for the Fijians.

    At half-time Australian schools led 24-10 after Fiji had opened the scoring with a try and the Australians had answered with two tries by wing Joey Fittock. Second-half tries by Reece Hewat and Sione Tuipulotu increased the lead to 31-10 before the final flourish.

  • Provinsiale sewes (o.18) se loting bekend

    Die verdedigende kampioen van die provinsiale sewes-rugbytoernooi, die Valke sal aanslae van Boland, KwaZulu-Natal en Grens in sy groepwedstryde moet oorkom om vanjaar tot die uitkloprondes deur te dring.

    Die toernooi word vanjaar vir die vierde keer aangebied met die Hoërskool Monument wat volgende maand die gasheer sal wees.

    Die Valke het verlede jaar ondanks ’n nederlaag teen die Blou Bulle (17-5) en ’n gelykop-uitslag teen die Luiperds (12-elk) in sy groepwedstryde tot die uitkloprondes deurgedring.

    Groep D is egter die taaiste groep met die Blou Bulle, Leeus, Pumas en Griffons wat teen mekaar sake sal uitspook. Die Ligbloues het in 2011 die eerste houer van die titel as nasionale sewes-kampioen geword, terwyl die Leeus as gasheer een van die sterker spanne op die toernooi behoort te wees.

    Die Pumas behoort ook ’n gedugte span in die veld te stoot met HTS Middelburg wat Hoërskool Pionier se toernooi vroeër vanjaar gewen het en ook op Mpumalanga se kampioenskap met die louere weggestap het. Die Griffons het altyd ’n gedugte sewes eenheid en kan ook nie sonder handskoene aangepak word nie.

    Die Vrystaat was in 2012 die kampioen en sal sy bure Griekwas, Westelike Provinsie en Limpopo in Groep C pak. Die Vrystaters behoort ook een van die vroeë gunstelinge te wees om vanjaar met die kroon weg te stap.

    Suidwestelike Distrikte, Oostelike Provinsie, die Luiperds en Namibië is in Groep C geloot. Die span van die Baai het vanjaar op die 51ste Cravenweek vir hoërskole in Middelburg (Mpumalanga) met die titel as nie-amptelike kampioen weggestap.

    Die Biltongboere kom in die toernooi in die plek van Zimbabwe wat onttrek het.

    Dit behoort interresant te wees om te sien hoe die doodloop van die @lantic-sewesreeks die gehalte van die spel op die provinsiale toernooi gaan beinvloed.
