  • GWDL coming to your screens this Sunday: Don’t miss out!

The Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) will be streamed live this Sunday, 11 August, on the SuperSport Schools app and online

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) is set to host round 16 of the u16 GWDL at President Park in Vereeniging.

With seven weeks remaining in the season, Mamelodi Sundowns enjoys a seven-point advantage at the top of the table, with an exemplary record of 15 wins from 15 matches.

Under the leadership of coach Rhoda Mulaudzi, the team has excelled offensively, averaging almost five goals per game, while smoothly transitioning from defence to attack.

A key strength lies in their midfield partnership of Zihle Mkhize and Moothosamy Amara, while their defence has been miserly, giving up only one goal per five matches played.

The Brazilians, the defending champions, have once again established themselves as the team to beat in the GWDL. On Sunday, though, they will face their toughest opposition.

Second placed Sundowns takes on JVW and a tightly contested clash is expected. In their previous encounter, ‘Downs scored near the end of the game to snatch a narrow 1-0 win.

Afterwards, coach Mulaudzi remarked: “Every time we face JVW, its a war.” Expectations for the clash at President Park are elevated. It’s a battle of one versus two and a win for JVW would pull them to within four points of the pacesetters.

Looking at it from a different point of view, JVW is only three points, or one win, ahead of third placed Tuks, while RESA is just four points off the second placed side.

There is likely to be some movement in the standings because Tuks and RESA will also face one another on Sunday.

They’ve both won 11 of their 15 games. Tuks has lost only twice all season long and RESA three times. They’ve performed consistently well, although there have been a small number of disappointments, where they have dropped points.

At the opposite end of the standings, the bottom club, Edenvale FC, is set to take on Refilwe FC, the club which is just above them in the standings. Six points separate the two.

Two weeks ago, Edenvale clinched their first victory of the season, scoring a 2-1 win over Kempton Park. They’ll be eager to emulate that performance to close the gap on Refilwe.

  • Nelspruit to host Kay Motsepe Schools Championship Mpumalanga Finals

The Mpumalanga leg of the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship resumes on Saturday, 10 August, with four schools set to compete for the honours at Lowveld High School in Nelspruit.

The Kay Motsepe Schools Championship is the biggest development schools’ tournament in the country, with over 5 000 schools participating in it annually.

This year, the competition is being played for a 20th time, across South Africa’s nine provinces.

Among the four teams from up north, who will face one another for the title of champions of Mpumalanga is St Mark’s. In 2016, they qualified for the final, but they were subsequently disqualified for misconduct. The class of 2024 will be eager to make amends for that unfortunate stain on the school’s record.

On Saturday, they’ll be up against Mavutela, Ithafa and Khayalami.

If a school wins the championship, it will derive benefits from improvements to its infrastructure and teaching and learning environments.

The national winner of the u19 category will receive R3-million in infrastructure development. Meanwhile, the u13 winners, boys or girls, will receive R1-million.

Each of the Mpumalanga schools will play three matches on Saturday, with the games lasting one hour in duration.

The event kicks off at 08:45

  • Arende kan hoogste vlieg na laaste groepswedstryde

    FOTO: Frans Lombard

Nico Malan: Isabella Muller, Minandi Venter, Gabriella Willemse (k), Caitlynne Brown, Chrislie Ferreira, Cindy Strydom, Lily Vieira da Cruz, Jay-Leigh Piyana, Meché Draghoender, Caylin Young, Faith Swarts (beseer).

Framesby: Ruzanne du Randt, Simone Louw, Quine Zeelie, Natalie van Rensburg, Brooklyn Elgar, Nicole Botha, Inge van Eck, Anja Vorster, Danelle Botha.

St Mary’s DSG (Kloof) and Rhenish seized the initiative on Thursday, day one of the Fairtree Super 12 Tournament, which is being played at C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje in Bloemfontein, from 8 to 10 August.

St Mary’s, after playing three games, leads Pool A, which also includes Oranje, Paarl Gimnasium, Garsfontein, Bloemhof, and Waterkloof.

Rhenish sits at the top of Pool B, ahead of Durban Girls’ College, St Stithians, Eunice, Menlopark, and St Anne’s.

St Mary’s hit the ground running on Thursday and made an impressive start to their challenge for the honours. The KZN side bagged a maximum nine-point haul and leads Pool A with wins from each of their three matches. In their opening game, coach Carla Ann Mackay‘s team made their intentions clear with an emphatic 4-0 win over Garsfontein.

As early as the fourth minute, Anna Birt found the back of the net to put the KZN girls ahead. It took a further 25 minutes before another goal was recorded, which was when the prolific Elizabeth Anderson struck to double the Saints’ lead.

That goal marked the beginning of a nine-minute purple patch during which St Mary’s scored three times. The other goals came from the sticks of Alexandra Bowyer and Nicola Forbes.

Their second tie was a tougher contest against Paarl Gim. It was goalless after the first half.

Coach Ian Naudé’s charges then broke the deadlock with a goal from Joné de Winnaar. St Mary’s equalised 10 minutes later through Anderson and Birt scored the winner just a minute after that.

Later in the day, Mackay’s charges went head-to-head with Bloemhof and registered another 2-1 win. Anderson slotted her third goal of the tournament and the first for St Mary’s in the ninth minute.

Liela van Zyl replied for Bloemhof in the 23rd minute to level the scores. However, Bloemhof didn’t hold onto the draw for long as Bowyer scored her second goal of the tournament, which was also the second for St Mary’s in the match.

Paarl Gim, Oranje, and Waterkloof are in second, third, and fourth place respectively in Pool A, having all won one, drawn one, and lost one, which leaves them on four points each. Paarl Gim is ahead of the other two because they have scored more goals.

Rhenish tops Pool B after sailing through day one of the Super 12 tournament without tasting defeat. Coach Chris Gerber‘s side has seven points after winning two of their three games and drawing the other.

In their first match, the Leah du Plessis-captained team found themselves trailing 0-1 in the first five minutes of the contest, after Nicola Thomas’s early goal for St Anne’s. However, the KZN side held onto the lead for only 12 minutes before Philippa Viljoen equalised with a field goal three minutes before the half-time break.

Du Plessis converted a penalty corner two minutes after the restart to put Rhenish ahead. Ten minutes later, Gerber’s side increased their lead further and finished the game as 3-1 winners.

In their second outing, the Stellenbosch girls breezed to a 3-0 win over Menlopark.

Kaitlyn van Binsbergen struck in the very first minute of play to put her side ahead. For the next 27 minutes, the score remained unchanged. Then, Puck Bakker doubled Rhenish’s advantage. Gerber’s side made sure of the points in the 38th minute with a third goal.

In the last match of the day, Rhenish played out a 0-0 draw with Eunice. With that draw, Eunice separated themselves from Durban Girls’ College (DGC), who have four points and are in third place in Pool B, although they have played a game less. Eunice has five points from a single win and two draws, while DGC has a single win and one draw.

Day two will provide a thrilling spectacle, with a couple of KZN versus Free State matches set to light up the turf. Pool A leaders St Mary’s tackle Oranje in a clash that is crucial for the tournament hosts, while in Pool B DGC and Eunice meet in a rematch of the St Mary’s Waverley Festival final.

  • SA Rugby sends condolences to family, French rugby

SA Rugby has sent condolences and offered support to French rugby and the family of 17-year-old player Medhi Narjissi, who was swept out to sea during a water recovery session at Cape Point on Wednesday.

The young player was a member of the French Under-18 team which is in South Africa to contest a tournament with the hosts, England, Ireland and Georgia. Narjissi was on an outing with the squad when the incident occurred.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and the French rugby community for the tragic loss of Medhi,” said Mr Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union.

“We cannot begin to comprehend the sorrow the family must be feeling at this moment. Please know that the entire rugby fraternity stands with you in mourning the loss of Medhi. This devastating news has been felt deeply across the rugby community here in South Africa and around the world.”

Mr Alexander said that SA Rugby had offered every support it could to the French team and Mehdi’s family, who are en route to South Africa.

The French Rugby Federation announced on Wednesday that Mehdi was swept away by a wave as he and his team-mates were swimming at the Cape of Good Hope at around 16h00.

Emergency services were mobilised to conduct a search and rescue operation without success throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The impact on the scheduling of the tournament – which kicks off at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town on Monday – has not been determined.

  • Goals aplenty on day one of the u18 Challengers’ Cup in Paarl

A whopping 50 goals were scored on the opening day of the u18 Challengers’ Cup in Paarl in the Western Cape, with four teams making strong headway ahead of a jam-packed weekend of hockey.

The tournament kicked off on Thursday morning at La Rochelle Girls’ High School and Paarl Girls’ High and it continues through to Saturday, when the final will be played at 13:10. You can catch it live on SuperSport Schools.

While many eyes were trained on Bloemfontein for the annual Fairtree Super 12 tournament, the opening day of the Challengers’ Cup produced exciting hockey and interesting results from the get-go.

Pool A kicked off proceedings with a Western Cape clash between Parel Vallei and Rustenburg Girls’ High. Coach Olu Ncukana’ Rustenburg claimed a 1-0 win over coach Jared Pitout’s side to get their title challenge off to a good start.

With each team scheduled to play in three matches on the day, Rustenburg faced Hoërskool Middelburg for a second time this season in their next game.

In March, Middies thumped the Cape side 3-0 in the semi-finals of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament. Ncukana’s charges were eager to avenge that defeat, and they pulled it off, with Ally Goulding scoring the only goal of the game.

Rustenburg completed their day’s assignments with a goalless draw against All Girls Festival champions’ Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria (Affies).

Affies also finished their day with two wins and a draw, beating York High 4-0 in their first match and following that up with a 2-1 victory over Parel Vallei.

While they lost 0-1 against Rustenburg Girls’ High, coach Alti Nel’s Hoërskool Middelburg side scored good wins in their other matches.

Firstly, they were guided to a 2-1 victory over Bethlehem Voortrekker, courtesy of goals by Abigail Esterhuizen, and Imke Grobbelaar. Then, in their last game, they overwhelmed York High 7-0 to post the biggest victory of the day.

Abigail Esterhuizen enjoyed a phenomenal outing, scoring an incredible six times, while Lume Smit, who was a regular goal scorer at the All Girls Festival, also found the back of the net.

In Pool B, it was coach Cindy Brown’s St Mary’s Waverley team that impressed.

In their three matches, the Gauteng side registered two wins, before playing to a draw against Somerset College in their final match of the day, which was brought to a stop due to heavy rainfall.

A Grace Faber goal secured the Johannesburg school a 1-0 win against Paarl Girls’ High in their opener. Coach Brown’s side then went on to defeat another Western Cape team, Fairmont High School, by two goals to nil, with Jamey Forrester and Zara Colyn striking for St Mary’s.

Kayla Grobbelaar scored in their final match of the day, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Somerset College.

Behind St Mary’s in Pool B is Pearson High School, who started the tournament in top form before losing concentration in their final match.

They got off to a strong start, claiming a 1-0 win over Paarl Girls’ High, before shocking Somerset College 3-2.

In that clash, Nyssa Slabbert, who has been a standout all season long for the Gqeberha school, scored twice, while Chanelle Venter’s goal sealed the victory.

In their final match of the day, however, coach Anton Peltenburg‘s troops suffered a hefty 1-5 defeat at the hands of their provincial rivals, DSG Makhanda.

Abigail Holderness scored a hattrick for DSG, while Sarah-Jane Brits and Anna Olivier completed the drubbing. Pearson mustered a consolation goal through Tayla Wilson.

On day two, Pearson will be eager to get back to winning ways when they take on St Mary’s in their first match, while DSG will feel confident about grabbing a second win when they take go up against Paarl Girls’ High.

With playoff spots on the line, day two is going to be about all-out action. The first matches start at 08:00 and you can catch them LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

  • Dale co-captains, Nzima and Songelwa, aim to inspire their side to a derby win

When Dale College picked up an impressive 3-2 win against Queen’s College earlier this season in Komani, they did it with solid execution, by seizing their opportunities, and by being defensively sound.

In their annual Pink Day celebration against their old foes, on Friday, they’ll need to replicate that performance on home soil to secure a season’s sweep of their rivals.

Dale’s co-captains, Sibongisile Nzima and Amangile Songelwa, aim to be at the forefront of the battle. They’ve been key contributors this season as Dale’s hockey programme continues to make strides after a challenging 2023.

Nzima, who is in grade 11, is a front-runner to lead the side again next year, while the clash against Queen’s will be Songelwa’s final outing for the Per Ardua ad Astra school.

The 2024 season has had its ups and downs for the Qonce side. They began it brilliantly at the Tony Godding Festival in East London in March.

Coach Junior Mqingwana’s team finished the tournament unbeaten and picked up wins against Montana High School (5-0), Bethlehem Voortrekker (4-3), and Linden (5-0) before sharing a 1-1 draw with Curro Waterstone.

In their next match, they were beaten by Grey High, but they bounced back to beat Queen’s the following week.

There was a mixed bag of results for Dale during the remainder of the second term. They lost 1-3 to Cambridge High and were outplayed 10-1 by Selborne College. They got back to winning ways against Graeme College, taking a 2-0 victory, before finishing the term with a tight 0-1 defeat Kingswood College.

Since the start of the third term, Dale has been competitive, but they’ve also been beaten four times. They came up short against Stirling High, losing 2-3, before going down 1-2 against St Andrew’s College, which was followed by further losses to Selborne College and Hudson Park last week.

“This season has certainly been better than last year,” co-captain Sibongisile Nzima told SuperSport Schools Plus ahead of their clash with Queen’s.

“Last year wasn’t the greatest. We were losing week in and out.

“There’s a massive difference this year. We have a new coach, new players, and we’ve played a good brand of hockey, even though results haven’t gone our way, but there’s an improvement,” he said.

His fellow captain Amangile Songelwa shared the same sentiments.

“I think we won only two games last year, so that already tells you the story,” he said.

“The coaching was not the issue; I think it was just the understanding between the coach and players.

“We have a good mix in the team also this year, and we’re looking forward to closing it on a high.”

The duo both attended Dale College Boys’ Primary School and began playing hockey from a young age.

Nzima started earlier, first picking up a hockey stick in grade one, while Songelwa began his hockey journey in grade five. They played in the same u13A side in 2019 before making their way to the high school.

In 2022, both captains produced outstanding seasons, and they were duly rewarded with selection for Border’s u16A inter-provincial side. That same year, they debuted for the Dale College 1st XI.

“It’s been an incredible journey at Dale. I started hockey in grade one and, to be honest, I’ve enjoyed most parts of it,” Nzima said.

“I started playing with Ama in 2019. We’ve known each other up until now. I’ve learned a lot from him, as a senior. I’m sure he’s taken some learnings from me, too. All in all, I’ve enjoyed it.”

Songelwa took up the sport when his family moved to Qonce.

After making the Border u16A side in 2022, he was included in the u18A side for the SASHOC National Week in Bloemfontein this year.

“Making Border this year was massive for me, and even though I didn’t play as much as I would’ve liked, I took some lessons from it,” he said.

Both captains said they hoped more learners at the school would take up the sport and contribute to its growth.

However, they’re also aware that they’ll need to win consistently to encourage other boys to give hockey a go.

A win this weekend against their old foes would be a step in the right direction. They have identified finishing and communication at the back as two of the keys to winning the match.

““Going into this game, we have to work on our key points,” Nzima said. “A massive issue in our team is finishing, and it’s hurt us a lot this season. The defence will also need to communicate well.”

Songelwa also raised concerns about the finishing and said Dale will need to be wary of the dangers which Queen’s will pose.

“I believe our strikers can do the job for us when we create the opportunities,” he added.

“In the midfield, we’ll also need to step up because Queen’s is dangerous, and they’ll also want to win at all costs. It will be a battle,” he concluded.

The game gets underway at 16:00 on the KWT AstroTurf.
