Die SDC Noordvaal Cup se Bowl-trofee sal weer vanjaar in Potchefstroom staanplek kry. Die groot vraag is net, waar? Weer by Potchefstroom Gimnasium, óf by Potchefstroom Volkskool?

    Puntemakers:

Montana 19 (12) – Drieë: Aiden Vorster, Luan Barnard, Ulrich van Biljon. Doelskoppe: Rubel Bester (2). Hoërskool Secunda 18 (6) – Drieë: Damian de Beer, Zander van der Merwe. Doelskop: Alonzo Blackenberg. Strafdoele: Blackenberg (2).

Hoërskool Pietersburg 36 (14) – Drieë: Krissie Swanepoel, Ziahn Lombaard, Andru de Beer, Celliers van der Merwe, Elkan Esterhuyze. Doelskoppe: Ryno Mienie (4). Strafdoel: Mienie. Hoërskool Lichtenburg 28 (23) – Drieë: Juan van Rhyn, George Bingudza, KG Legodi, Tiaan Booysen. Doelskop: Luan Snyman. Strafdoele: Snyman (2).

    Puntemakers:

HTS Middelburg 23 (14) – Drieë: Ethan Kock, Ruwan Graaff. Doelskoppe: Tercius Bezuidenhout (2). Strafdoele: Bezuidenhout (3). Hoërskool Klerksdorp 10 (3) – Drie: Jarred van Staden. Doelskop: Dorian Isaacs. Strafdoel: Isaacs.

    o.15: Zwartkop 11, Wesvalia 10.

Jubilation, excitement, and relief permeated the Hudson Park girls’ first hockey team after they ended their season with a 6-0 victory over Cambridge High School in East London on Friday.

The meeting, which took place at the Buco AstroTurf in Bunkers Hill, saw the hosts bow out in style in front of their home supporters.

It was another dominant performance from coach Jerry Snyman’s side after they thumped Kingsridge High School for Girls (KHS) 5-1 in Qonce a week ago.

A fairly young Cambridge team, meanwhile, headed into the game after a tough season. Before facing Hudson, they had lost 0-9 against Queenstown Girls’ High in Komani, so they were hurting.

Hudson, though, was on song. They dominated the game, owning more of the ball, and they created many goalscoring opportunities. They were also clinical in crucial moments and scored some fantastic goals.

SA u17 star Busiwe Mayekiso, who recently represented South Africa against Zimbabwe at the Allistar Fredericks Africa Challenge in Johannesburg, was at the forefront of it all and netted a brace.

She was joined on the scoresheet by Asiphe Zitumane, Inathi Lubelwana, Jorja Wilson, and the energetic and lively Hannah Faro.

“The game went well,” coach Snyman told SuperSport Schools Plus after the match.

“The girls executed the plan. The first half wasn’t our best, but, after the halftime talk, the girls rallied together and played the hockey we’ve been striving for.”

In 2024, Hudson made significant strides within the Border region and scored some notable wins. Then, this season, they upped the ante to become a force to be reckoned with.

Snyman referenced some of the team’s standout moments. “It has been a great second half of the season,” he said.

“We’ve had our ups and downs this season, but the camaraderie in the team was definitely our strength.

“We had four players achieving 100 caps this year and an outstanding game vs Clarendon in July, which ended in a 1-1 draw.”

The future of Hudson Park’s hockey programme looks healthy, and the strong results will help as the push to have their first AstroTurf installed on the school’s campus continues.

Looking ahead, Hudson will field have a much younger side in 2026, with eight players leaving.

Reflecting on the changes to come, Snyman said: “Four out of the eight senior players that we are losing achieved their 100 caps this year.

“The other four players have all achieved 50 caps. This is a true testament to their commitment and dedication to the sport, as well as the potential that these young players show, so they will be missed.”

    BOYS

Contesting the Kearsney Hockey 5s, presented by Belgotex Sport, for the first time, Durban High School (DHS) took to the game like a duck to water, going unbeaten through pool play before downing Michaelhouse in the final to lift the trophy.

Skilful and creative, School looked as if they were experienced competitors in the Youth Olympics’ format. They were effective at creating space and finished well.

However, they found the going tougher on Saturday than on Friday, which had brought them five wins. Twice, DHS won in a shootout, after drawing 3-3 with Garsfontein, and then 3-3 with Michaelhouse in the final.

In a key game on day two, Michaelhouse and Garsfontein met in what was effectively a semi-final showdown, and it was ‘House who rose to the challenge, controlling the contest by owning the majority of possession.

Thandanani Zuma scored a couple of stunners to put Michaelhouse into a 2-0 lead before Garsfontein replied late in the second half to give themselves some hope of rescuing a draw. But ‘House held on to deservedly claim the win.

Hentie Cilliers captured the u17 title and Hoërskool Pionier the u15 honours on Saturday after two days of all-out action at Hoërskool Pionier in the High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota.

Hentie Cilliers, from Virginia, in the Free State, made the longest drive of any of the competing teams, around 480 kilometres, to be in Vryheid, but they made it worthwhile, going unbeaten to lift the title.

They very nearly came unstuck in the final against Glencoe’s Sarel Cilliers, the defending champion, but pulled off a tight 24-22 win.

Sarel Cilliers won a key pool game against Pionier 14-10, but sparkled in their quarterfinal and semi-final matches, thumping Vryheid Landbou, who made the final in 2024, by 38 points in the last eight before beating Ladysmith High by 14 to secure their place in the title game.

    u15 Competition

There was joy for the hosts, Pionier, in the u15 competition. They saved their best for the playoffs, brushing aside Vryheid Landbou 40-0 in the semi-finals before almost matching that emphatic victory in the final, which they won 40-5 over Empangeni

That result came close to their 42-7 win over the same opponents in their Pool A clash. The Zululanders did well, though, to topple Pool B’s winners, Ferrum, 40-26 in the semi-finals.

Pool B was closely contested, with no team emerging unscathed. Ferrum fell 14-15 to Vryheid Landbou. Vryheid Landbou lost 22-28 to Sarel Cilliers, and Ferrum beat Sarel Cilliers 27-19.

Home victory for Overberg over Hoërskool Langenhoven

hands holding rugby ball on fieldIn Caledon, on Saturday, Hoërskool Overberg enjoyed a home victory over Die Hoërskool Langenhoven, producing a strong first half performance to set up their 29-12 win.

Ovies‘ captain and eighthman, Johan Beukes, delivered a phenomenal performance in front of his home crowd. He shut off Langenhoven’s momentum at the breakdown, while, on offence, his powerful carries earned him two tries.

The home side’s centres, Lee Abotsi and Favian Arendse, both put in big shifts in the midfield. They were like an extra pair of flanks, making sound tackles and often challenging at the rucks. Abotsi crossed for a try of his own, while Arendse tacked on two conversions.

Down 0-17 at the break, the visitors from Riversdal were frustrated. After the break, though, they dialled up their intensity, which made for an evenly contested second half.

Flank Dylan Labuschagne and hooker Francois Myburgh, played their hearts out to each score a try. They forced the Ovies’ defence onto the back foot, and, at times, it looked as if they could inspire a comeback.

After sharing the spoils in the second half, Langenhoven will look back on the match and think they could have had a shot at victory if they had been on their game from the start.

Just as had happened in May, the SACS and Bishops 1st XVs drew. Back then, it was 14-14. On Saturday, on Memorial A Field, it ended 18-18.

It began well for the visitors, who made a flying start, scoring in only the third minute.

They created an overlap on the halfway line, which freed up Noah Edmunds, on the wing. He cut inside and out and evaded the scrambling SACS defence to put Bishops ahead. Then, flyhalf Christian Toweel, added the extras.

SACS ate into the deficit through two penalty kicks from Mikey Skeeles, with the centre’s successes leaving Bishops with a narrow 7-6 lead at the break.

In the second half, Bishops extended their advantage to 12-points, scoring 11 points without reply to go up 18-7. SACS, though, kept battling away.

Their hooker, Sango Zangqa, led from the front and crashed over next to the uprights in the 69th minute, forcing his way through a wall of muddy Bishops defenders by jumping for the try-line from the base of a ruck.

With their captain’s try, SACS’s 12-point deficit was reduced to seven.

Time was almost up. SACS had to run it, and, from the kick-off, they quickly fed the ball down the line, where eighthman, Thando Sithole, bounced off a tackle and found space.

He fed fullback Quewinn Lackay, who, thrillingly, floored the accelerator to shoot past four Bishops’ defenders, beating the final man with a neat inside step, to earn SACS a draw, which left the visitors staggered.

Throughout the season, it had been Bishops who found ways to score points late in games, but on Saturday, it was their southern suburbs’ rivals who manufactured two tries in the space of two minutes to snatch a share of the spoils.

It was all square for a second time in the 2025 season.

Wynberg Boys’ High powered their way to a comprehensive 43-0 win over Rondebosch Boys’ High in muddy conditions in front of their home crowd on Hawthornden Field on Saturday.

Earlier in the season, in June, it was far closer, with Wynberg claiming an exciting 38-33 win with a late try from SA Schools’ scrumhalf Morné Noble.

On Saturday, ‘Bosch wasn’t in the game. They benefitted little from their set-pieces and were slower to the breakdowns. Meanwhile, Wynberg played the game at pace and were creative on attack.

Inside centre Yaqeen Ahmed led the way, crossing for a brace of tries, while also adding four conversions and a penalty for a 21-point haul.

Operating with brilliant creativity, he opened up the Rondebosch defence. His running lines and passing variety enabled his side to execute a number of backline moves from set-pieces.

Flyhalf, Achmat Behardien, also drove Wynberg’s playmaking, and his probing kicks often exploited holes in the visitors’ back three. His reward included a try.

Rondebosch looked overwhelmed by the intensity of the home side. Their defensive line was often caught out of shape due to Wynberg’s quick distribution from the breakdowns, which was driven by the the efforts of scrumhalves, Morné Noble and Hugo Loggenberg.

Next Saturday, ‘Bosch will need to pull off a major turnaround. They take on Bishops and will need to improve every aspect of their play, especially their attack. They won comfortably against their great rivals earlier in the season, but anything is possible in a derby clash.

Wynberg has firmly made the case that they are the best of the southern suburbs’ teams in 2025. They’ll aim to underline that claim with a win over SACS at home on the same day.

Wynberg 43 (24) – Tries: Yaqeen Ahmed (2), Achmat Behardien, Noah Gila, Daniel Oud, Hugo Loggenberg. Conversions: Yaqeen Ahmed (4), Daniel Oud. Penalty: Yaqeen Ahmed; Rondebosch 0.
