    Nel-driekuns gaffel Rhinos in Mbombela

    Puntemakers:

Menlopark 31 (19) – Drieë: Divan Nel (3), Leskin Samuels, Wynand van Wyk. Doelskoppe: Andru Kuhn (3). Nelspruit 14 (7) – Driee: Tinyiko Silubane, Vaughn van Zyl. Doelskoppe: Divan de Kock (2).

Oos-Moot 36 (14) – Drieë: Deon Badenhorst (2), Franco O’Neale, Jandre de Beer, Drew Williams, Jeandre Venter. Doelskoppe: Ruwan Allen (3). Eldoraigne 17 (3) – Driee: Rikus Rheeder, Cameron Killian. Doelskoppe: JP Meyer (2). Strafdoel: Meyer.

    Ander spanne:

    o. 16: Menlopark 13, Nelspruit 12; Oos-Moot 17, Eldoraigne 11.

    o. 15: Menlopark 45, Nelspruit 12; Oos-Moot 45, Eldoraigne 0.

    o. 14: Nelspruit 17, Menlopark 12; Oos-Moot 22, Eldoraigne 0.

  • Klofies skok Jansies in Boksburg

    Puntemakers:

Waterkloof 45 (35) – Driee: Migael Prinsloo (2), Riwan van Aswegen, Happy Makate, Divan Botha, Ronan Bastiaanse. Doelskoppe: Franco Cronje (6). Strafdoel: Cronje. Dr EG Jansen 38 (14) – Driee: Jeandre Jacobs (2), Danre Pike, R-Jay Pietersen, Storm Labuschagne. Doelskoppe: Matthew Bergman (5). Strafdoel: Bergman

HTS Middelburg 36 (26) – Driee: CJ Muller, Hanro Terblanche, Reece Botha, Jaque Stassen, Dirk du Plooy. Doelskoppe: Jaque Stassen (4). Strafdoel: Stassen. Kempton Park 22 (15) – Driee: Deon Mulligan, Joshua Meyer, Wian Rieckert. Doelskoppe: Tiaan Delport (4). Strafdoel: Delport.

    Ander spanne:

    o. 16: EG Jansen 33, Waterkloof 24; Kempton Park 42, HTS Middelburg 17.

    o. 15: Waterkloof 15, EG Jansen 10; Kempton Park 25, HTS Middelburg 0.

  • A massive statement as Grey puts up 90 against Kwaggas

    Photo: Kulu Ferreira

Grey College ran in 14 tries against Outeniqua on Saturday as they silenced their doubters after a shock defeat to Jeppe at the NMI Toyota North-South Tournament in their last outing.

The Bloem boys proved that they remain a force to be reckoned with as they produced a masterclass against the visitors from George.

Grey’s burly outside centre, Ethan Adams, crossed the whitewash on three occasions, while the two players brought into the lineup after their unexpected loss, Juliun Cosmo (flanker) and Heinz Stockenström (fullback), also made their presence felt.

Stockenström contributed 21 points to the hosts’ massive total, diving over for a try and slotting eight conversions after taking over the kicking duties.

Cosmo dotted down twice for the home team, including a sensational try just after Ellie Meyer opened Outeniqua’s account with a penalty in the 26th minute.

Grey captain Liam van Wyk and winger Ruben Cilliers also bagged two apiece, while the rest of the damage was done by Siyabonga Kenny (winger), Alzeadon Felix (flyhalf), AJ Meyer (lock) and school captain, Pieter van der Merwe (centre).

Felix steered two conversions over before halftime to help Grey to a convincing 36-3 lead at the break, but the Free Staters upped the ante even further in the second stanza to romp to a massive 90-3 victory, which would have sent out a clear warning signal to the rest of their season’s opponents.

Earlier in the day Grey’s third team showed character to withstand a fired-up onslaught from Fichardtpark‘s 1st XV.

After trailing 0-12 at halftime, the Grey “Peaches” fought back to forge a 21-12 advantage. Then, the Fichie Lions hit back once more through their speedy winger, Divan Martens, but the Peaches held out for a hard-fought victory.

Next weekend, Grey College takes on one of its biggest challenges of the season when they travel to the Western Cape to face Paarl Gimnasium in a brand-new inter-schools’ clash.

The Gimmies have been the pacesetters this season and are one of the few traditional powerhouses who are yet to taste defeat this year after another monster effort saw them beat Affies by a single point, 20-19, in Pretoria this weekend.

After the overpowering performance Grey College produced against the Kwaggas, that battle with Paarl Gim looks like an early contender for the game of the season.

  • Prinsloo’s brace barely enough as Paarl Gim sneaks past Affies

    Photo: Marius Nortje

Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool came very close pulling off an upset of high-flying Paarl Gimnasium after a back-and-forth battle in Pretoria on Saturday.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools. (www.supersportschools.com).

Affies dominated up front, but Paarl Gimnasium had the last laugh.

In the end, the side from the Western Cape came out on top by a single point, winning 20-19, in the seventh Premier Interschools clash between the two schools.

The home side’s pack had the upper hand, ruling the set pieces, especially the scrums. This starved the visitors of the free-flowing possession that they’re accustomed to receiving. As a result, Gim’s dangerous backline lacked its usual potency.

Gim did, however, catch the Affies’ defence napping early on, with right-wing, Immanual Prinsloo, bursting through for the first of his two tries, and the only five-pointer of the half.

Ruben Pienaar’s trusty right boot kept the home side within touching distance, however, as he slotted two penalties, leaving Affies trailing by only one point at the break.

The second half developed into a see-saw battle between the two kickers, as Pienaar and the visitor’s fullback, Freek de Kock, each knocked over two penalties.

Then, the hosts’ best player on the day, left wing Eagan Roux, capitalised on a well-executed training ground move, to dive over for a try, which gave Affies the lead for the first time in the match.

Prinsloo’s dream game, however, wasn’t yet complete as he read an Affies’ backline move like a book to intercept the ball on his 22-metre line before flying down the field for a five-pointer for Gim.

That crucial piece of magic meant that the left-winger – who until a few weeks ago still ran out for the 2nd XV – had bagged an invaluable double, and he went on to earn man of the match honours.

De Kock’s clutch second penalty of the half was the final nail in the coffin as Paarl Gimnasium held onto their lead from the last couple of minutes to claim a sweet and very hard-fought victory away from home.

    Scorers

Paarl Gimnasium 20 (7) – Tries: Immanual Prinsloo (2). Conversions: Freek de Kock (2). Penalties: De Kock (2). Affies 19 (6) – Try: Eagan Roux. Conversions: Ruben Pienaar. Penalties: Pienaar (4).

It was a jovial atmosphere, with the stands jam-packed with maroon and navy-blue blazers, for a Friday night hockey showdown between Rondebosch Boys’ High and Paul Roos Gymnasium on the Bosch Astroturf in the southern suburbs. And when the dust settled after a tight tussle, it was the hosts who had scraped a 1-0 win.

The victory means ‘Bosch have kept their unbeaten start to the Western Cape season intact, following a 2-2 draw against Stellenberg High School last week.

It was Paul Roos’s first defeat of the year. They had begun it in dominant form at the Cape Co-Ed and Founders Festival.

The match’s first chukka was predictably tight, as both sides pushed and probed for openings, although Paul Roos owned the lion’s share of possesion.

Coach Michael Baker’s side had an opportunity to break the deadlock when they received a short corner with a minute left in the chukka. Their penalty corner kingpin, captain Reuben Sendzul, dragged his flick wide, however, and the scoreboard operators remained untroubled.

The game opened up in the second and third chukkas, with coach Waseem Domingo’s Rondebosch boys forging a foothold in the contest, which frustrated the visitors.

Bosch attacked more but remained solid at the back with captain Hilton Lima, Joshua Beattie, and Thomas Gordon clamping down on the visitors’ attacking efforts.

Rondebosch’s hard work was eventually rewarded seven minutes before the end of the third chukka. It came from a set piece after a period of sustained attacks.

From a smartly executed penalty corner, Noah Heath deflected the ball in from just outside of the goalkeeper’s right-hand post to stake the hosts to a 1-0 lead.

In the final chukka, Paul Roos took the game to Rondebosch, piling on the pressure in a desperate bid to find an equaliser.

A measure of their domination was the five penalty corners they were awarded. Usually, that would be a recipe for disaster for any opposition, with Sendzul a serious dangerman with his wicked drag flicks, but Bosch fronted up and scrambled to keep the Stellenbosch side at bay.

Paul Roos had few issues entering the Rondebosch circle, but finding a scoring shot once they were inside it was a big challenge.

Their last hope came with just a minute and 24 seconds left on the clock, via another short corner. The ball was played to Sendzul again, and just as it looked as if his effort was going in, ‘Bosch shot-stopper Marley Musasa pulled off a terrific save to keep his team ahead.

When the final whistle sounded, it was 1-0 in favour of ‘Bosch, much to the delight of coach Domingo, who praised his side’s defensive efforts, and the grit they showed to keep their opponents out.

“Playing Paul Roos is never easy. They are physical, fast, and a well-managed team,” Domingo told SuperSport Schools on the Bosch Astroturf after the match.

“We fought hard. We got one opportunity, and we made it count.

“I think the boys were phenomenal today on defence, by far the best I’ve ever seen them play, and I think they need credit for that,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing night for Baker, who watched on as his side struggled to turn chances into goals.

“It’s frustrating. We had about seven short corners, and a couple of circle entries, but couldn’t score one goal,” he said.

“Credit to ‘Bosch, I think they’ve got a good record against us at home, and it showed tonight that they’re a tough team to beat at home.”

Next week, ‘Bosch returns to action against an in-form SACS, while Paul Roos plays their first match at home against Paarl Boys’ High.

In other matches around the Province, SACS, after thumping Fairmont High School 6-0 on the opening weekend, continued their fine form by roaring to an emphatic 7-0 win over Parel Vallei.

They were inspired to the win by a Reece Theunis hattrick, made up of two drag flicks, and a field goal. Litha Kraai, who also featured on the scoring sheet last weekend, netted a brace, while solitary goals from Cohen Williams and Cole Allam made it seven in total.

Wynberg Boys’ High impressed with a 5-1 win over Paarl Boys’ High. Wynberg, under the direction of Ben Wiley, picked up from where they left off last weekend, when they thumped Curro Durbanville by exactly the same score. Their goals were scored by Ethan Lee (x2), Jordan Paulsen, Beni Hansen, and Ethan Daniels.

Fairmont, after copping one from SACS last weekend, returned to winning ways with a resounding 4-0 win over Westerford, while Belville High edged The Settlers 1-0.

Goals from Michael du Toit, Matthew Sutherland, and Tyrone Rieth helped Somerset College to a 3-1 win over Pinelands, and Worcester Gymnasium made it two on the trot, handing Hoërskool Punt a 5-2 defeat.

There was nothing to separate Curro Durbanville and the Langa Hockey Club, with their contest ending 2-2.

In Saturday’s action, HTS Drostdy defeated Framesby 4-1 at home, while Durbanville got the better of Edgemead, claiming a 3-0 win. Brackenfell completed the weekend’s schedule with a 2-0 victory over Cannons Creek.

  • Wynberg skud Boishaai se hok na 36 jaar, Grey in verwoestende bui teen die Kwaggas

    FOTO: Marius Nortjé

PRETORIA.

  • Jeppe claims much-needed come-back win, Parktown and KES draw

In a high-quality clash, it was Jeppe who got the better of Westville on the Boden AstroTurf on Saturday in Johannesburg.
In a high-quality clash, it was Jeppe who got the better of Westville on the Boden AstroTurf on Saturday in Johannesburg.

It was cold on the Boden AstroTurf at Jeppe High School for Boys on Saturday morning, but the home team’s performance warmed up the hearts of their supporters as they claimed a victory over the visitors from KwaZulu-Natal, Westville Boys’ High.

It was goalless after the opening chukka, and the intensity ramped up in the second chukka. Eventually, the hosts made a breakthrough, with Ezray Stadt netting, to take a one-goal lead into the half-time break.

With eight minutes remaining in the third chukka, they doubled their advantage, thanks to a Ben Benjamin strike, but Westville, unbowed, came storming back, reducing the deficit to one goal shortly after that, with Bo Mokoena scoring a cracker.

Jeppe, though, were not to be denied and they responded with a third goal, this time from the stick of Tumiso Kameel, to secure a hard-fought 3-1 win.

The contest was Jeppe’s first since a shocking 1-4 loss to St David’s Marist Inanda. Afterwards, the Zebras‘ relieved coach Siya Sityana praised his side’s effort.

“Overall, the game was an exciting contest,” he said. “My boys were a well-organised and well-structured team.

“We bounced back nicely with our mental state after losing so many games. Also, we cannot downplay the positivity that comes with playing at home, with having such support.

“All in all, the boys fought a good fight. That’s all I can say.

“I’m looking forward to our next game, next weekend against Affies.”

Meanwhile, the hosts’ Parktown Boys High School and King Edward VII (KES) played to a draw.

In an entertaining tie, KES took the lead in the first chukka, but Parktown levelled just before the break. When KES made a breakthrough again, Parktown quickly responded, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

KES coach Sharmin Naidoo commented: “The result is a draw, and I think it is a true reflection of the game. It was a very good match between two good teams.”
