The Paarl Derby, part of the King Price Derby Series, kicks off at 16:00 this Saturday at the Faure Street Stadium, where more than 25 000 spectators will take their seats.

Paarl Gimnasium, ranked South Africa’s top school side in 2025 so far, will look to extend their unbeaten run to 18 matches. Their rivals, Paarl Boys’ High, beaten only once this season, aim to upset the hosts after last year’s 8-30 loss.

Historically, the derby has been fiercely contested, with eight of the last nine clashes decided by five points or fewer.

“The process in getting the team ready for Saturday’s clash has started at the beginning of the season. We try to keep our routine the same as the one we used throughout the season. Also, to keep the emotion in place during the week, as there will be enough of that on Saturday. The focus of the team will be to play for each other and fulfill their individual roles,” said Pieter Rossouw, head of rugby of Paarl Gimnasium.

Gim captain Markus Muller, compared to a young Danie Gerber, leads a potent backline supported by SA Schools’ eighthman Quintin Potgieter. Boishaai counters with powerhouse prop Jordan Jooste and elusive fullback Mark Grindlay. With talent across the park and intense local pride, the stage is set for another classic battle in one of South Africa’s most iconic schoolboy rugby rivalries.

“It is Interschools in Paarl. The town is even prettier this week than usual. Blue and Green all over the place, of course, a bit bluer,” said Sean Erasmus, head coach of Boishaai.

This year’s interschools clash will be the 106th between these two powerhouses. Gim has been on the winning side 52 times, Boishaai coming out on top 42 times with 11 encounters ending in a draw.

“The highlight for me is naturally the game on Saturday. But it is also the build-up throughout the week between the three schools. The involvement of the parents, old boys and the town which makes this Interschools a very special occasion,” said Rossouw.

This weekend will also host a special 100th clash between Jeppe High School for Boys’ and King Edward VII’s Red Army at Collard Field in Johannesburg.

Jeppe won the earlier clash in the season by 37-28 but the Red Army has been marching on in the latter part of the season as they recorded victories over Rondebosch Boys’ High (20-17), Noordheuwel (23-22), Helpmekaar (23-21) and Pretoria Boys’ High (24-23).

KES has won 63 times since the first interschools back in 1935. Six matches ended in a draw, while Jeppe bagged 30 victories.

Grey College of Bloemfontein will travel down to Gqeberha to face their namesake, Grey High School, in their annual encounter. The team from Bloemfontein will arrive in the Eastern Cape as favourites for this King Price Derby Series encounter, but it is never easy on Kolisi Field.

In Pretoria the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria will look to continue their dominance against Waterkloof in their King Price Derby Series clash. Klofies’ last success against Affies was back in 2017.

Klofies will also travel to Affies with their talisman and eighthman, Marco Kok, ruled out with injury. The clash between him and Stefan McDonald was to be one of the highlights.

Affies’ SA Schools halfback pairing of Zirk Meyer and Ruben Groenewald (captain) will be the dangermen for their side.

Southern teams impress as FNB u18 Craven Week heats up

DHL Western Province and Eastern Province claimed crucial derby wins on the fourth day of the FNB U18 Craven Week at Hoërskool Middelburg.

WP maintained their perfect record at this week’s tournament after downing the Sharks High Schools on Thursday, while EP proved too strong for Border in the Eastern Cape derby.

Earlier on Thursday, the Valke and Suzuki Griquas secured their first wins of the competition when they beat Sanlam Boland and the Leopards, respectively.

The first quarter of the Coastal Derby was fiercely contested, with the Sharks stretching the WP defence and wing Jadrian Afrikaner touching down for a hard-earned try.

WP hit back with tries by centre Markus Muller and prop Matthew van der Merwe, while flyhalf Ethan van Biljon slotted a penalty goal on the stroke of half-time to boost his team’s lead to 11 points.

Province continued to dominate after the break, and went on to finish with six tries in an emphatic 45-13 win, with the impressive Muller bagging a brace.

After losing 41-10 to the Sharks earlier this week, EP made a statement when they put three early tries past Border in the Eastern Cape derby. Flyhalf Tristan Kemp kicked three conversions and three penalty goals to steer his side to a convincing 30-12 victory.

The game between the Valke and Boland was in the balance at half-time, before the boys from the East Rand shifted through the gears in the second stanza to secure a convincing 35-19 win.

Meanwhile, Griquas bounced back from their recent loss to Border to down the Leopards 46-34, with flyhalf Aidan Gadeija scoring two tries and four conversions.

The last round of the FNB u18 Craven Week will be staged at Hoërskool Middelburg on Saturday, with WP taking on South Western Districts in the final match of the tournament.

Free State soars as Mgedezi and Adams star in Craven Week thriller

LAMLA MGEDEZI, fullback of the Free State dives over the tryline for one of his three tries to help his side defeat the Blue Bulls by 52-33 at the FNB u18 Craven Week in Middelburg. PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

The Free State is back to winning ways on the third day of the 60th annual FNB u18 Craven Week hosted by Hoërskool Middelburg in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

The Free Staters were fueled by a hat-trick of tries by their fullback, Lamla Mgedezi, as well as a brace of tries by their SA Schools centre, Ethan Adams, to down the Blue Bulls by 52-33.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Adams’ midfield partner, O’Ryan Kleyn, once again produced a solid performance, quietly becoming an unsung stalwart for the team.

Flyhalf, Darius Erwee, also found his rhythm again as he opened the Bulls’ defence with some wily running. He also slotted four conversions and three penalties for a personal tally of 17 points.

His father, Marius Erwee, was the scrumhalf for the Free State schools’ side when they smashed Northern Transvaal in 1992 in a curtain raiser for the match between the All Blacks and Free State in Bloemfontein. His schoolmate from Sentraal, Stephen Brink, scored 46 of the Free State schools’ side on that day.

The Blue Bulls will be licking their wounds, but also need to recover quickly before Saturday’s final day of the tournament. It was the team from Pretoria’s fourth successive defeat at the Craven Week. The first time ever since the inaugural tournament in 1964.

The Bulls did, however, have a worse run of form as they went for six matches without a victory from the last match in 1984 until 1986. The only reason they did not lose four in a row is the fact that they drew 15-all with Western Transvaal (now Leopards) in their final match of the 1985-edition of the tournament in Witbank.

In the Free State’s pack, both locks, AJ Meyer and Claude Steyn, also produced standout performances.

For the Bulls, their winger Thabiso Simelane showcased his pace and also put forward a solid claim for a place in the SA Schools’ side with a hat-trick of tries. Their captain and flyhalf, Ruben Groenewald, took possession a lot flatter than in their opening match against the Golden Lions, which unlocked the Bulls’ backline much more efficiently.

In the opening match of the third day in Middelburg, the Limpopo Blue Bulls came out on top by 49-44 against the Griffons in an exciting clash that produced 13 tries in total.

The winning side’s hooker, Ziahn Lombaard, recorded the first hat-trick of tries. And in the spirit of the game, not from rolling mauls. Their fullback, Ryno Mienie, also produced a kicking masterclass as he converted all seven of his side’s tries.

The quality of rugby produced by the Limpopo Blue Bulls under Corstiaan Vermaak (coach) is without a doubt a huge improvement by the union from their performances during previous weeks in recent history.

The Griffons suffered their second defeat, but will feel better about this performance than their first outing against Western Province XV. Their eighthman, Emile Mahlelebe, caused Limpopo problems with his bullocking runs. He was also rewarded with a brace of tries for his performance.

Other performances of note were by Joze Draghoender (fullback) and Sedwin Gysman (inside centre).

    Scorers:

Free State 52 (27) – Try: Lamla Mgedezi (3), Ethan Adams (2), O’Ryan Kleyn, AJ Meyer. Conversions: Darius Erwee (4). Penalties: Erwee (3). Blue Bulls 33 (19) – Try: Thabiso Simelane (3), Junaide Stuart, Luan Potgieter. Conversions: Ruben Groenewald (4).

Conversions: Ryno Mienie (7). Griffons 44 (31) – Tries: Emile Mahlelebe (2), Joze Draghoender, Sedwin Gysman, Xander Wiltshire, Qlin Booyse. Conversions: Olereko Sebatana (3), Draghoender. • Vorster on fire as SWD keep exceptional record against Free State

Vorster on fire as SWD keep exceptional record against Free State

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

South Western Districts managed to keep their exceptional record against the Free State at the annual FNB u18 Craven Week intact, with a 35-34 victory on the opening day of the 60th edition in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

The last and only time the Free State was able to beat SWD at the Craven Week was back in 1972. The team from the southern Cape came out on top in the other two encounters before today in 2008 (31-25) and 2022 (29-19).

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

It was a blitzkrieg of three tries in five minutes by Tyrese Plaatjies, Kai Pratt and Jade Peterson between the 62nd and the 67th minute that gave SWD the upper hand.

Just two minutes before Plaatjies crossed the tryline, referee Charlwyn Darries showed Free State flyhalf Darius Erwee a yellow card. A minute later, Darries also sent lock Claude Steyn to the sin bin.

Free State could feel a bit hard done by as Plaatjies seemed to have stepped on the touchline in the in-goal area while starting the blitzkrieg. It was not sent for review to the television match official, as Darries probably didn’t believe there was any reason not to award the try.

SWD’s inside centre, Christiaan Vorster, was on fire throughout the match. He was superb on both attack and defence. Other standout players in the victory was Keenan Myners (hooker), Dian Augustyn (lock), Jacobus de Villiers (eighthman) and Reinhardt Viljoen (fullback).

For Free State, their fullback, Lamla Mgedezi, created a couple of opportunities, while Ethan Adams (outside centre) also produced a solid performance.

In the opening match on the first day, Western Province XV proved too strong for the Griffons. The team from the Western Cape won comfortably by 52-6.

The victors scored eight tries with inside centre Iwan Jordaan converting six of them. Lock Gershom Pieters could also feel more than happy with his performance on the day. In the backs, Kunene Gadu showcased his class in the midfield.

    Scorers:

South Western Districts 35 (11) – Tries: Anrich Scheffer, Christiaan Vorster, Tyrese Plaatjies, Kai Pratt, Jade Peterson. Conversions: Jandrian Goosen (2). Penalties: Virgil Pockpas (2). Free State 34 (17) – Tries: Darius Erwee, Xander Smit, Claude Steyn, Lamla Mgedezi, O’Ryan Kleyn. Conversions: Darius Erwee (2), Kleyn. Penalty: Erwee.

Western Province XV 52 (24) – Tries: Kunene Gadu, Liam de Villiers, Tristan Joubert, Gershom Pieters, Chadley Davids, Steph van der Merwe, Siphesihle Mbungendlu, Bernardt Schulze. Conversions: Iwan Jordaan (6). Griffons 6 (6) – Penalties: Olereko Sebatana (2).
