  • Markötter Fortress: Unbeaten Gim returns to their second home

Markötter Fortress: Unbeaten Gim returns to their second home

Paarl Gimnasium will be excused if they might think of the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch as their second home ground.

The Gimmies boast an excellent record in the stadium as their last defeat against Paul Roos here was in 2009. Paul Roos won this encounter by 47-36 with players like Steven Kitshoff, Ricky Schroeder, Braam Steyn and Craig Barry in their midst. Schroeder, who captained the Maroon Machine in 2009, also scored a hat-trick in this victory.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) and on DStv Channel 216 and SABC Plus. The King Price Derby Series clash kicks off at 14:15 this Saturday.

In fact, Paul Roos has only tasted victory four times in the last 17 outings since 1991 in the Markötter Stadium against Paarl Gimnasium.

To add even extra pressure is the fact that Paarl Gimnasium will arrive in Stellenbosch on Saturday still unbeaten. The only slight blemish to their record so far has been a 16-all draw against Affies.

Gim has defeated Grey College by 43-31 in Bloemfontein. This was team from the City of Roses’ first defeat at home since 2017.

Like most of the Western Cape, heavy rains and strong winds are expected over the weekend. Gim’s clash against Affies was also on a wet field. This Saturday’s match-up against Paul Roos will give Gimmies an indication of how much they have learnt about playing on a wet pitch.

Their captain, Markus Muller, will, as always, be a key player. His direct opposition, Matthew Kleyn, is also a player with skill. The backlines of both these teams will however, not have the deciding impact on the outcome if the Markötter becomes muddy.

The outcome will be decided upfront with the eighthmen, Quintin Potgieter (Paarl Gimnasium) and Gert Kemp (Paul Roos Gimnasium), playing leading roles. Gimmies’ flanker Hendré van der Westhuizen was good against Affies and could also be a thorn in the home side’s flesh.

Kemp will also receive assistance from Luke Kent and Dylan van Wyk in the loose trio to make sure every loose ball is picked up.

    The teams:

Paul Roos Gimnasium: 15 Keenan Stoffels, 14 Tiaan Basson, 13 Matthew Kleyn, 12 Ian Smith, 11 Jordan Steenkamp, 10 Matthew Seymore, 9 Liam de Silva, 8 Gert Kemp (captain), 7 Luke Kent, 6 Dylan van Wyk, 5 Reuben Winter, 4 Marnus van Leeuwen, 3 Gerrit van Vuuren, 2 Altus Rabe, 1 Zak Hickman.

Paarl Gimnasium: 15 Dawid Badenhorst, 14 Jeerahno Jagers, 13 Markus Muller (captain), 12 Ethan Barker, 11 Thomas Saunders, 10 Louis Koen, 9 Mickyle Booise, 8 Quintin Potgieter, 7 Hendré van Zyl, 6 Hendré van der Westhuizen, 5 Jean Dreyer, 4 Bernhardt Schulze, 3 Adriaan van der Lingen, 2 Charles Whitehead, 1 Pieta Cilliers.

  • Battle in the Mud: Boishaai seeks to break Grey College’s hold

Battle in the Mud: Boishaai seeks to break Grey College’s hold

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

A Muddy Brugstreet will undoubtedly be an ally for Paarl Boys’ High in their King Price Derby Series clash against Grey College on Saturday.

More than 25 millimetres of rain is expected in Paarl before the two teams kick off at 14:00.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) and on DStv Channel 216 and SABC Plus.

The home side also boasts one of the most experienced coaching staff in schoolboy rugby. Their head coach, Sean Erasmus, is on a tiny list of coaches who managed to defeat the rugby factory of Grey College three years in a row. Boishaai defeated Grey in 2015 (21-19), 2016 (28-18) and 2017 (46-31). The victory in 2015 was the team from Paarl’s first victory over Grey in Bloemfontein.

Boishaai also appointed Neil de Bruin as their Director of Rugby from this season. Former British and Irish Lions player CJ Stander is also part of the coaching staff, adding his weight specifically at the breakdowns. Their backline coach, David Sadie, has also gained a lot of experience in his role over the years.

The team from Paarl smashed Monument (85-0) and Noordheuwel (42-14) during the recently completed Absa Wildeklawer in Kimberley.

It must also be stated that Grey College’s head coach, Jannie Geldenhuys, has never lost against Boishaai at first team level. Not as a coach or as a player. Geldenhuys has been in control of Grey’s first team since 2021 and recorded victories over the team from Paarl in 2021 (37-3), 2022 (21-12), 2023 (39-30) and 2024 (40-28).

Grey probably has the most experienced coaching staff in schoolboy rugby. Besides Geldenhuys, the management staff is boosted by the presence of Springboks Wian du Preez, Tiaan Liebenberg and Helgard Müller. Their Director of Rugby and backline coach, Bobby Joubert, is also an experienced former provincial player.

The team from the City of Roses also performed well during the Absa Wildeklawer with victories over Helpmekaar (56-14) and Garsfontein (45-29). Their only defeat so far in 2025 came against Paarl Gimnasium (31-43).

Boishaai also has a solitary defeat on the books against Oakdale Landbou (26-28).

Grey College had some problems with their goal kicking earlier in the season, but it seems that they have found an answer for their woes in flyhalf, Darius Erwee. He kicked all his goals during the Absa Wildeklawer slotting 14 conversions and a penalty. He also scored a try in each of the matches for a personal contribution of 21 points against Helpmekaar and 20 points against Garsfontein.

His duel with Francois van der Merwe could be one of the highlights of the clash. Van der Merwe’s halfback partner, Liam de Villiers, will also be one of their side’s key players.

    The teams:

Paarl Boys’ High: 15 Mark Grindlay, 14 Jeneal Davids, 13 Tristan Joubert, 12 Iwan Jordaan, 11 Kaleb Holmes, 10 Francois van der Merwe, 9 Liam de Villiers, 8 Gavie Kok, 7 Steph van der Merwe (captain), 6 Wege van Zyl, 5 Jayden Joubert, 4 Gershom Pieters, 3 Juan van der Merwe, 2 Tommy Muller, 1 Jordan Jooste.

Grey College: 15 Lamla Mgedezi, 14 Benjamin van den Berg, 13 Ethan Adams, 12 O’Ryan Kleyn, 11 Thristan Maree, 10 Darius Erwee, 9 Sherwin Buys, 8 AJ Booysen, 7 Xander Smit (captain), 6 Adem Nieuwoudt, 5 AJ Meyer, 4 Alexi Tyropolis, 3 JG Badenhorst, 2 Tian Fourie, 1 David Hayidakis.

    Kick-Off: 14:00

  • Boishaai bully Monnas, Diamonds on top in seesaw battle against Maritzburg College

Boishaai bully Monnas, Diamonds on top in seesaw battle against Maritzburg College

Paarl Boys’ High steamrolled Monument 85-0 on the final day of the Absa Wildeklawer-tournament in Kimberley.

Boishaai was in a devastating mood as they ran in 13 tries to hand the Wit Bulle, from Krugersdorp, their biggest hiding ever.

Monnas‘ previous biggest defeat was handed to them last year in Bloemfontein when Grey College smashed them 87-19.

The team from Paarl’s Christiaan Grundlingh (hooker) and Jayden Joubert (flanker) both recorded first-half hat-tricks. Grundlingh also scored a fourth try in the second half.

Joubert, who usually plays lock, was outstanding on the side of the scrum before his coach, Sean Erasmus, replaced him at half-time. He was also named Man of the Match for his effort in the first 35 minutes.

His replacement, Kobus Wilken, also produced the goods as he scored a brace of tries in the second half.

Boishaai’s fullback, Mark Grindlay, contributed 20 points to his side’s victory via ten conversions.

Monnas lost both matches in Kimberley and will face EG Jansen in Boksburg in their next clash. This match is part of the SDC Noordvaal Cup. Boishaai’s next clash is against Grey College in the Brugstreet Stadium in Paarl.

Diamantveld‘s captain and inside centre, Jonathan Harding, was back in top form as his side defeated Maritzburg College by 38-31. Harding scored a hat-trick in the match that saw the two teams exchange the lead a couple of times.

He also received the Man of the Match honour for his efforts.

Diamonds’ tighthead prop, Dian Ellis, scored the match-winning try as he crashed over. Before his try, the scores were deadlocked at 31-all.

Maritzburg College’s hooker, Theo Boshoff, was his team’s best player on the day. He is difficult to bring down and scored a brace of tries.

    Scorers:

Paarl Boys’ High 85 (52) – Tries: Christiaan Grundlingh (4), Jayden Joubert (3), Kobus Wilken (2), Josh le Roux, De Wet Nel, Liam de Villiers, Kaleb Holmes. Conversions: Mark Grindlay (10). Monument 0.

Diamantveld 38 (17) – Tries: Jonathan Harding (3), Jayden de Klerk, Driaan Jacobs, Dian Ellis. Conversions: JG van Heerden (4). Maritzburg College 31 (24) – Tries: Theo Boshoff (2), Rylan Armoed, Indiphile Mlotshwa. Conversions: Liyema Tsoko (4). Penalty: Tsoko.

Toe Noordheuwel se losskakel, Jeandré Uithaler, die afskop waarneem was daar minder as 30 sekondes se speeltyd oor.

Nories se binnesenter, Tristan Helmand, was ook ‘n doring in Outeniqua se vlees.

    Puntemakers:

Noordheuwel 35 (17) – Drieë: Jayden Steyn (2), Andrew Lambert, Clinton Agu. Doelskoppe: Jeandré Uithaler (3). Strafdoele: Uithaler (3). Outeniqua 33 (12) – Drieë: Grant Savage, Ruan van Rensburg, Virgil Pockpas, Schalk van der Merwe, Matthew Prins. Doelskoppe: Pockpas (4).

Stellenberg 17 (7) – Drieë: Armand Potgieter (2), Ethan van Biljon. Doelskop: Van Biljon. Waterkloof 17 (10) – Drieë: Ruan Jacobs, Jhannes de Beer. Doelskoppe: Ronan Bastiaanse (2). Strafdoel: Bastiaanse.

  • Muller and Co. land the knock-out punch in City of Roses

Muller and Co. land the knock-out punch in City of Roses

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

It always takes a special team to beat Grey College at home in Bloemfontein. And this year’s team from Paarl Gimnasium is a special bunch of players.

Gimmies handed Grey College its first defeat at home since 2017 with an emphatic 43-31 victory in the City of Roses.

Watch this King Price Derby Series clash again on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Their captain and outside centre, Markus Muller, is an exceptional rugby player. Muller scored a brace in the victory but also helped create a couple more scoring opportunities for his side.

Muller also won the first round of the battle for the SA Schools No. 13 jumper against Ethan Adams. The national selectors might still decide to combine these two in the midfield later this year.

Probably the most impressive part of Paarl Gimnasium’s victory is the fact that they outplayed and outscored Grey in the final 20 minutes of the clash. The visitors scored twice in the 60th and 62nd minutes via Johan Kleynhans and Muller to land the knock-out punch.

The two teams rested with the score at 24-all after Grey’s flyhalf, Darius Erwee, drew scores level with a penalty just before half-time. Erwee was one of his side’s standout performers.

Kleynhans also completed a brace of tries with this score, with a move that started with a turnover about 100 metres back. This had Grey on the back foot and staggering. Muller’s visit behind Grey’s posts two minutes later from the kick-off after an excellent run by lock Mighael Turner put the result beyond doubt.

This ended Grey College’s unbeaten run of 2,905 days on their home field. Their previous defeat at home was on 13 May 2017 against Paarl Boys’ High (31-46). That team of Boishaai was led by Francke Horn (Lions captain), with flyhalf, Abner van Reenen, playing the leading role.

Grey College’s lock AJ Meyer also deserves a mention for a solid performance. He will, without a doubt, be a SA Schools contender yet again later this year. He already represented the side last year. Alexi Tyropolis (flanker) and Xander Smit (captain and hooker) also tried their best.

Gimmies’ Turner received the Man of the Match, or rather King of the Match award for his mammoth effort.

    Scorers:

Paarl Gimnasium 43 (24) – Tries: Markus Muller (2), Johan Kleynhans (2), Adriaan van der Lingen, Thomas Saunders, Dawid Badenhorst. Conversions: Divan Pieters (2), Louis Koen (2). Grey College 31 (24) – Tries: AJ Meyer (2) Darius Erwee, Alexi Tyropolis. Conversions: Erwee (4). Penalty: Erwee.

Paarl Gimnasium is soos Grey steeds onoorwonne vanjaar.
