  • Oos-Moot edge Klofies in thrilling Suzuki Netball Power Series clash

Oos-Moot edge Klofies in thrilling Suzuki Netball Power Series clash

Oos-Moot’s captain and goal assist, Lana Love, led her side to a hard-fought 31-30 victory over Hoërskool Waterkloof in their Suzuki Netball Power Series encounter on Wednesday. This match also doubled up as a Tshwane Jubilee League encounter.

Love was on fire, keeping the scoreboard rolling with her shooting and keeping her team fired up throughout the encounter. She was deservedly named Food Lovers Market Player of the Match for her performance on the day.

Klofies led by 8-5 after the opening quarter, thanks to some enterprising play by centre, Leandri van Staden, and wing attack, Zoë Roos. On top of that, Waterkloof has a formidable goal shooter in Fortune Cletus-Okolo, who has no problem scoring once she receives possession.

Klofies’ lead would have been bigger if it were not for the outstanding defence by Mia Steenkamp (goalkeeper).

By half-time, Oos-Moot had turned the tide, leading 15-13. Only leaking five goals thanks to Steenkamp’s performance on defence. One turnover of possession by Steenkamp in the second quarter swung the pendulum in her side’s favour and was named the Suzuki Game Changer Moment of the match.

In turn, the home side scored ten goals in the second quarter, with Love receiving some good assistance from Jaime Marshall (centre) and Telana Breytenbach (wing attack).

Waterkloof clawed back in the third quarter to draw the scores level at 23-all with everything to play for in the final quarter of the match.

This was Oos-Moot’s second successive victory over Klofies after also defeating them by 16-14 during last year’s Tshwane play-offs to secure themselves a place at the Gauteng Championship.

The team from the Moot also performed well earlier this year at the Affie Prestige-tournament, as they were knocked out in the play-offs of the main draw by the losing finalist, Hoërskool Stellenberg of Bellville.

This clash once again highlighted why the Jubilee League is regarded as the toughest schools’ league in South Africa.

Another three clashes in the Suzuki Netball Power Series will take place later this week. On Friday, Hoërskool Garsfontein will host the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool of Pretoria, with play starting at 17:20.

Two Suzuki Netball Power Series are scheduled for Saturday in Paarl, with Paarl Gimnasium hosting La Rochelle (10:30), while Paarl Girls’ High will be taking on Oranje from Bloemfontein.

  • Saffa Footprint Across Europe: Eight South Africans shine in the Rugby Europe Championship

Saffa Footprint Across Europe: Eight South Africans shine in the Rugby Europe Championship

During this year’s Rugby Europe Championship, no less than eight South Africans were in action for the various international sides in action in the competition.

Cody Thomas, who represented Westville Boys’ High as a tighthead prop back in 2014, was ever-present for Portugal in the competition and helped them to win the final against Georgia by 19-17 in Leganes. Not surprisingly, more than a couple of Saffas have played for Os Lobos (The Wolves) through the years.

Jacques le Roux (HTS Tuine), Nelio de Sa and Mike Andrade (both Grey College) have represented Os Lobos in their careers. Last year, Sergio Moreira (Noordheuwel) also toured South Africa with Portugal, but he still has to make his debut.

Romania had the largest Saffa-representation during the competition. No less than four South Africans represented Stejarii (The Oaks) during their campaign.

Nicolaas Immelman (Grey College), Dylan Schwartz (EG Jansen), Damian Bonaparte (Outeniqua) and Jondré Williams (Boland Landbou) were the four players. All of them also represented their respective unions at the annual Craven Week during their schooling careers.

Probably the most interesting Saffa in the Europe Championship is Switzerland‘s scrumhalf, Blessing Motaung (Jeppe High School for Boys). He is a freelance journalist who made his debut for the Swiss side during the competition and also represented the University of Johannesburg’s Young Guns earlier in his career.

For Spain, there was a certain John-Wessel (JW) Bell in action at fullback. Bell, a former learner from Eldoraigne in Centurion, also represented the Pumas, Valke and Lions during his proffesional career. He made his debut for Spain back in 2019 and has represented them in more than 30 tests since.

For Germany, Bader-Werner Pretorius (Michaelhouse) was the only Saffa in action for the Black Eagles. They have also used quite a few Saffas through the years, with Sebastian Ferreira (Paarl Boys’ High), who made his international debut in 2016, still part of their squad.

Other former Saffas who played for Germany are Paul Bosch (Ellisras), Ayron Schramm (Kearsney College), Adriaan Theisinger (Grey College), Jaco Otto, Kurt Haupt (St Alban’s College), Hendrik van der Merwe (Grey College), Jarrid Els (Hudson Park), Marcel Henn, Wynston Cameron-Dow (Durban High School), Marcel Coetzee (Maritzburg College), Michael Poppmeier (Graeme College), Nikola Klewinghaus (Hillcrest High) and Raynor Parkinson (King Edward VII).

Interestingly, Otto is the top try scorer for the Black Eagles with 25 tries in his career, while Parkinson’s 338 points is the most ever for the German national side.

The first-ever Suzuki Netball Power Series encounter was everything it promised to be.

Two of South Africa’s best teams, Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool of Pretoria (AHMP) and Paarl Gimnasium, faced each other in an exciting encounter in Pretoria in which the result could have gone either way.

Affies kept their unbeaten record for 2026 intact by walking off the court victors at 30-27. Former Protea-players coach both sides in Yolande Ferreira (AHMP) and Juline van der Merwe (Paarl Gimnasium).

The home side came out on top because of their better shooting accuracy during the match, with Anzélle Stofberg (goal shooter) and Milan Oberholzer (goal assist) leading the way.

Stofberg was named Food Lovers Market Player of the Match for her brilliant performance on the day. The only quarter that Affies did not outperform the visitors in the match was during the second quarter.

Paarl Gim scored 10 goals to 7 in the third quarter to take a narrow 16-15 lead at half-time. The hosts took the first quarter by 8-6.

In the third quarter, Affies took control, winning it by 7-4 to take a 22-19 lead. The Gimmies, however, had something to cheer about as Sophia Liebenberg (wing defence) intercepted a pass in this quarter, which was announced as the Suzuki Power Moment.

Liebenberg was also her side’s best player on the day. So, a well-deserved accolade for her after a stellar performance.

Before the match, Gim’s only defeat so far came against Helpmekaar Kollege (15-16) during the annual Menlopark Netball-tournament. They also drew 22-all against Die Hoërskool Menlopark.

Affies is still unbeaten after winning their annual Affie Prestige-tournament last month. They defeated Stellenberg by 28-24 in the final of this tournament.

The second match of the Suzuki Netball Power Series will take place on Wednesday between Oos-Moot and Hoërskool Waterkloof in Pretoria. This match is also part of Tshwane’s Jubilee League.

    The teams:

Affies: Anzélle Stofberg, Lyla Robinson, Milan Oberholzer, Leruske Rademeyer, Luné Strydom, Eleanor van Heerden, Milan Engelbrecht, Amelie van der Merwe, Milla Janse van Rensburg (captain), Giselle Matfield.

Paarl Gimnasium: Anja Smit (captain), Daniëlle de Jonge, Miné Smit, Mari Snyman, Kyla Smit, Mieke van Rooyen, Sophia Liebenberg, Nicola van Heerden, Anja Arangies, Eloné Dippenaar.

Paarl Gimnasium’s first rugby team is gathering steam in 2026.

The Gimmies secured an emphatic 51–24 victory over the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) of Pretoria in their King Price Derby Series clash on Saturday.

Watch the game again on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.co.za).

The visitors’ fullback, Thomas Saunders, scored a hat-trick of tries in the victory. His first try, in the 17th minute, which opened Gimmies’ account, was also named the Suzuki Game Changer Moment of the match.

The team from Paarl led 22–12 at the break. It was a tightly contested match until the 25th minute, when Affies’ inside centre, Juan Ferreira, received a yellow card after attempting to intercept a pass near the tryline.

Referee Ansius Vermeulen also awarded a penalty try, which put Gimmies into a 14–7 lead. The Wit Bulle responded immediately from the kick-off, with a try by wing Dandré Brink.

Paarl Gimnasium’s scrumhalf, Mickyle Booise, was on top of his game once again, and his try from a blindside break off a scrum gave his side a 22–12 lead at the break.

Booise represented the SA Schools A-side last year and will be aiming to upgrade that cap to a full SA Schools selection later this year.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, a blitzkrieg of four tries lifted Gimmies into a commanding 44–12 lead by the 50th minute.

Saunders only needed four minutes in the second half to complete his hat-trick, while Ethan Barker (inside centre) and Dirk Hugo (flank) also crossed the whitewash.

Gim captain Ethan Barker was named King of the Match for his performance. He will, however, agree that the foundation for his side’s victory was laid up front, with an exceptional performance by flank Corné Niemand, who was well supported by Hugo, eighthman Hendré van Zyl, and the locks, Bernhardt Schulze and Jean Dreyer.

Affies fought back late in the game, with outside centre Estian Marx scoring a brace of tries.

Although it was a large victory, it was not Paarl Gimnasium’s biggest win over Affies. Their 35-point margin of victory in a 38-3 win in 1973 was larger, as was a 40-7 win in 2024.

It was only the fifth time in their history that the Wit Bulle had conceded 50 points.

    Scorers:

Paarl Gimnasium 51 (22) – Tries: Thomas Saunders (3), Mickyle Booise, Ethan Barker, Dirk Hugo, Malan Mostert, Penalty Try. Conversions: Louis Koen (3). Penalty: Koen. Affies 24 (12) – Tries: Estian Marx (2), Fourie Roberts, Dandré Brink. Conversions: Reuben Venter (2).

  • Stellenberg paints Pretoria in a shade of Jade with historic victory over Grey

Stellenberg paints Pretoria in a shade of Jade with historic victory over Grey

The Jade Brigade is marching on.

The 1st XV of Hoërskool Stellenberg secured a historic 26-21 victory over Grey College on Tuesday, the final day of the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid tournament, hosted by Affies in Pretoria.

It was the team from Bellville’s first-ever victory over Grey College. The Bloemfontein boys previously beat Stellies 43-27 in 2022, and 31-8 in 2023.

Tuesday’s victory was the second occasion in the 2026 season in which Stellenberg claimed a major scalp. They beat Paarl Gimnasium 20-19 in their opening fixture of the year on 14 March.

The clash between the Jade Brigade and Grey was a tightly contested encounter throughout, with Stellenberg’s captain and eighthman, Yanos Molnar, leading the physical charge. He was named Man of the Match for his momentous effort in the historic victory.

His direct opposition, Niel du Randt, also stood out and ran hard at the winning side’s defenders, regularly bursting through tackles.

Stellenberg’s inspirational lock, Juvan Burden, struggled with a shoulder issue but kept making tackles and cleaning rucks, putting his body on the line to help his side secure the victory.

Grey College drew first blood after fullback Lamla Mgedezi, laid the groundwork for scrumhalf Jonathan Drysdale to round off a movement that started in their own 22.

Mgedezi kept more than three defenders busy every time he was put in possession and showed his class.

    Scorers:

Stellenberg 26 (12) – Tries: Yanos Molnar, Ralton Rhode, Seth Coetze, Penalty Try. Conversions: Ethan van Biljon (2). Grey College 21 (13) – Tries: Jonathan Drysdale, JG Horn. Conversions: Christoff Crous. Penalty: Crous (3).

Affies 24 (12) – Tries: Reubenne Vlok (2), Joshua Gouws, Dandré Brink. Conversions: Reuben Smith (2). Hoërskool Durbanville 13 (3) – Tries: Malherbe Louw. Conversion: De Wet Viljoen. Penalties: Viljoen (2).

    Puntemakers:

Helpmekaar Kollege 50 (24) – Drieë: Zuan Krige (3), Xander van Niekerk (2), Ruann Bester,  Ethan Lourens, John van Druten. Doelskoppe: Ethan Kruger (3), Ethan Lourens, Shaye Lourens. Boland Landbou 22 (3) – Drieë: Steyn Lamprechts, Du Toit Brink, Izak Beukes. Doelskoppe: Divan Meyer (2). Strafdoel: Meyer.

Hoërskool Rustenburg 47 (19) – Drieë: Aydan Willemse (2), Lian Boshoff, Xander Stickling, Ricardo Enos, Zak Swanepoel, Pieta Niemandt. Doelskoppe: Enos (6). Welkom Gimnasium 8 (3) – Drie: Gimo Nafta. Skepdoel: Jadewyn Solomons.

    Puntemakers:

HTS Drostdy 43 (29) – Tries: Anwill Jacobs (2), Darren Makeza (2), Werno Ramsauer, Tristan Syster. Conversions: Jano van Deventer (5). Penalty: Van Deventer.  EG Jansen 24 (5) – Tries: Werner Breytenbach (2), Jaco Engelbrecht, Aljay Olivier. Conversions: Renaldo October, Juan van Aswegen.

Waterkloof 45 (28) – Tries: Jacques Janse van Rensburg (2), Alexander Griesel, Gustav Mienie, Mieder Erasmus, Stiaan Theron, Penalty Try. Conversions: Liam Schutte (4). Diamantveld 7 (7) – Try: Clinton Brits. Conversion: JG van Heerden.

  • Suzuki Netball Power Series set to transform schools’ netball in South Africa

Suzuki Netball Power Series set to transform schools’ netball in South Africa

The newly formed Suzuki Netball Power Series is set to elevate schools’ netball to its rightful place among school sports in South Africa.

The launch was held at the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The first of 30 matches in the Suzuki Netball Power Series will take place on 11 April, featuring Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria (AHMP) against Paarl Gimnasium in the Jacaranda City.

“To be part of this series is very special. It is long overdue, and it is time that we put netball out there and expose the game to various platforms,” said Yolandi Ferreira, Director of Netball at AHMP.

A total of 33 of South Africa’s top netball schools will compete in the Suzuki Netball Power Series, which runs from April to August. Both weekday and weekend matches will be broadcast on SuperSport Schools.

Waterkloof, Garsfontein, Menlopark, Helpmekaar Kollege, La Rochelle, Paarl Girls’ High, Oranje, Noordheuwel, Stellenberg, Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof, Framesby, and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High are just some of the netball powerhouses that will take part in this exciting new series.

“The Suzuki Netball Power Series represents far more than competition, it’s a powerful platform for young women to showcase their talent, confidence, and determination on a national stage. For many of these girls, this is the first real opportunity to be seen, supported, and celebrated for their skill. We are incredibly proud to stand behind a series that invests directly in the future of school sport and empowers the next generation of champions. Being part of this journey is not just important to Suzuki, it’s an honour, and a responsibility we carry with immense pride,” said Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager of Suzuki SA.

The Suzuki Netball Power Series is driven by Provantage Sport, which also manages successful school sport properties like the King Price Derby Series and the Virseker Noordvaal Cup.

“For years, school sport has shown us what is possible when young athletes are given a platform that truly honours their potential. The success of the King Price Derby Series proved how transformative a professionally structured product can be for boys’ rugby, and it became clear that our girls deserved nothing less. The Suzuki Netball Power Series was created to close that gap. It gives young women a stage equal in stature, equal in opportunity, and equal in recognition. This is the moment where we say, as a sector and as a country, that girls’ sport matters just as much, and we will invest in it at the same level,” said JD Henderson, Managing Director of Provantage Sports.

In addition to Suzuki as the title sponsor, Food Lover’s Market and Energade have partnered to bring this exciting new netball series to life.

“A vision this ambitious can only become reality when the right partners stand behind it. Having Suzuki as the title sponsor is not just a commercial alignment, it is a shared commitment to the empowerment of women and girls in sport. Their belief in this series has unlocked opportunities that simply didn’t exist before. Together, we are building a platform that celebrates young athletes, amplifies their stories, and shows every girl that her talent is worth investing in. With Suzuki on board, we are not just hosting a series, we are reshaping the future of women’s sport in South Africa,” said Henderson.

Pheiffer’s 25-point haul sinks Affies in King Price Derby thriller

TRAVIS PHEIFFER (with ball), flyhalf of Paul Roos Gimnasium, produced a prolific performance as he scored 25 points in his side’s 45-28 victory over Affies in Stellenbosch: PHOTO: Charmaine Sander

Paul Roos Gimnasium’s flyhalf, Travis Pheiffer, produced a superb performance to help his side to a 45-28 victory over the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria in their King Price Derby Series clash at the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch.

It would be easy to just state Pheiffer’s prolific point scoring during the match as he scored two tries, converted all six of his side’s tries, as well as slotted a penalty for a personal contribution of 25 points.

Pheiffer’s first try came after a perfectly timed interception, while he also displayed his distribution skills with fullback, Kyle Snyers’ try. Snyers sliced through Affies’ defence like a warm knife through butter after being put into possession by Pheiffer.

The flyhalf was not surprisingly named King of the Match for his performance on the day. The try by Snyers was also named the Suzuki Game Changer moment.

The home side led 24-11 at the break. The visitors from Pretoria fought back in the second half to bring the deficit to only 24-23 after their wingers Joshua Gouws and Dandré Brink dotted down.

Brink’s try could have easily swung the momentum in his side’s favour as he rounded off after receiving the ball just inside his own half. His father Helgard Brink represented the Blitzbokke in his career.

Dandré has also made a name for himself on the athletics track as he boasts a best time of 52.58 seconds in the 400m-hurdles. This is also the quickest time in South Africa this year for Boys u17 so far.

Gous completed a brace of tries as he also scored his side’s only try in the first half.

The last time these two sides met in Stellenbosch was back in 2015 when Damian Willemse was Paul Roos’ flyhalf, while Ruan de Swardt was his direct opposition. Paul Roos came out on top by 29-12 on the day.

Since then, Willemse helped the Springboks to be crowned World Champions twice, while De Swardt has represented the Proteas in test cricket.

Affies’ captain and lock, Martin van Niekerk, could also feel more than happy with his performance on the day.

For Paul Roos, their loose forwards Werner de Bruin and Gerard Bekker, together with hooker Lehan Barnard, laid the foundation for the victory in the front.

    Scorers:

Paul Roos Gimnasium 45 (24) – Tries: Travis Pheiffer (2), Werner de Bruin, Kyle Snyers, Albert Nel, Tristan Armitage. Conversions: Pheiffer (6). Penalty: Pheiffer. Affies 28 (11) – Tries: Joshua Gouws (2), Dandré Brink, Martin van Niekerk. Conversion: Reuben Smith. Penalties: Smith (2).
